What the law sayswe have to do

There were different laws about treatingpeople fairly but a new law called theEquality Act 2010 brings all of thesetogether.

We now have just one plan to say what wewill do to:

l x stop people being treated unfairlybecause of who they are or what theybelieve

l make sure people have the sameopportunities

l help different people to get on together.

Our plan for treating everyoneequally

Making sure everyone can use ourservices

Everyone who lives in Newham is different– and we need to make sure our servicesare right for everyone.

We think this is better than having separateservices for different groups of people.

We will check this is working and step in ifpeople are treated unfairly or harmedbecause of who they are.

For example, because they are disabled orbecause of their race or religion.

Or if they care for someone who is an olderperson or disabled.

We will think about these things and abouttreating everyone equally in all our otherplans and work.

There is lots of new building going on inNewham. The Olympic Games andParalympic Games in 2012 are just part ofthe story.

Many other areas of Newham are alsobeing rebuilt and all of this will mean morejobs and money for this part ofLondon.

We will work with charities, community andfaith groups and other organisations to givepeople who live here more chances to dowell.

Being fair to people whowork for us

The council and other local organisationshave plans to help these groups of peoplefind jobs with us:

l young people

people who have been to university

l disabled people.

Page 14: London Borough of Newham

10

We will try to help staff work at times thatsuit their families or other people they carefor.

We check whether:

l staff are happy with working for us andwe are not treating any groups unfairly

l everyone who works for us has thesame chance to move on to better jobswith the council

l we pay people fairly for the same typesof jobs.

l working with other local organisations and voluntary, community and faith groups to getthings done

l making sure it is easy for everyone, disabled people to find out about anduse our services

ReportWe will check how well we are doing andreport to you each year on what we havedone.
