AntlerspresentationforLondonArtFair2016:ArtProjectsshowcasesnewworksbytwocontemporaryartists:AmbrosineAllenandAnoukMercier.Ourcuratedstandexplorestheintersectionsandpointsofdeparturebetweentheirpractices–morespecificallytheirapproachesto:fragmentation,scale,formandtheirsubversionsoftheRomanticandLandscapegenres.AmbrosineandAnoukhaveengagedinanongoingdialogueoverthelastfewmonthswhilstproducingnewworkforthispresentation;thishasinformedandcomplimentedthedirectionoftheircollaborativeandindividualjourneys.Bothartistsphysicallycutupandreassemblereferencematerialtore-constructnew,imaginedlandscapes.Anouk’sreferencematerialspansfrom17thand18thCenturyRomanticlandscapeetchingstohand-tintedVictorianphotographsandpostcardsofalpinehotels.Ambrosinetakespapercuttingsfromdiscardedbooksandoldencyclopaediasthatshere-worksintointricatecollages.Thesetimeandlabourintensiveprocessesofde/re-assemblageallowtheartiststoplaywithnotionsofdocumentationandauthenticity.Anouk’sportrayalofovertlyidyllicscenesistingedwithabsurdityandcracksoftheuncannyarevisiblebeneaththeintricateexterior.Bothartistsarecurrentlyexploringthewaterfallmotifyetindifferingways.Anouk’sfascinationwiththisformleadsbacktoboththeGrandTourexpeditionsandtheVictorianbeautyspot,andhowtheseinfluencedLandscapedesign.Anoukisparticularlyinterestedin'fake',man-madewaterfalls–conveyinganimpossibilitytorecreatetheauthenticityofthenaturalworld.Ambrosine’sdepictionofwaterfallsseestheirbeautyandpuritydisruptedthroughanoverloadingofwater;shecreateschangestonaturalflowsandpathswithdebrisandcollisionscomplicatingthisfurther.Herwaterfallsarealmostruined–theymaintainthemajestyoftheformbutunderminethepicturesqueaspect,astheynolongersitwheretheyshouldinthelandscape.OtherrecentelementsthatbothAmbrosineandAnoukhavebeenexperimentingwitharescaleandform:namelythatoftheminiatureandthealternateformsthatlandscapeartworkscantake.Bothartistshavestudiedtheshapesthatlandscapesare‘framed’inandhowtheseaffectviewerinterpretationoftheimage:somearedistracting,somecontributetoasenseofspace,andsomehaveovertconnotationstoeras,typesofarchitectureand/orobjects.Ambrosinecomments:‘thinkingabouttheexteriorshapeoflandscapedepictionshascapturedmyimagination.Ikeepbeingdrawntoworkswithunusualframesormountsandthinkingabouthowtheyeithercompleteordisrupttheimageswithin’.Withregardstoscale,Ambrosinehasbeendevelopingherthree-dimensionalpracticewhilstAnoukhasbeencompelledbythewayinwhichminiaturesdemandamorephysicallyintimateviewingexperience,requiringcloseproximity.Anoukcomments:‘workingonaminiaturescaleallowsmetoworkfasterandthereforeexperimentwithcomposition,subjectandcolour.Myminiaturesoftenreflectacertainamountoffreedomandboldnessthatconsequentlyfeedsintomypracticeasawhole.Forthisreasontheyhavebecomeasignificantpartofmyprocessandareessentialinthedevelopmentofmyideas’.Thesenewworksofferexpansivevisualnarratives.Theyarelayeredcompositionsthatinvitetheviewertovisuallyembarkonnew,fragmentedterrainthatissuggestiveofplacebutultimatelyillusive.

STATEMENTAmbrosineAllen'sCompendiumtotheNewWorldisanever-expandingseriesofintricatecollages,meticulouslycreatedusinglayeruponlayeroftinypapercuttings.Thesubjectsarelandscapes,oftenepicinscopebutwithadetailedaestheticthatreferences17thand18thcenturyengravingsofageographicalnature.Eachpieceoftentakesseveralmonthstocomplete.Simultaneouslyfantasticalandreal,beautifulyettroublingthecollagesdepictaworldinturmoil;landscapesofalteredecosystemsthataresubjecttobizarrenaturalphenomena.Ruinssitstrewnamongstunfamiliargeology,theseainvadesthelandasthelandshifts,theskybroodsandterrifyingstormsrollin.Informedbythescience,mythsandhistoryofhumanity’sinteractionwiththeenvironment,theseriespresentsuswitha‘newworld’,analternativeevolutionthatshadowsourownbutisviolentlyshapedbythepowerandmajestyofnatureandtheselfdestructiveforceofmankind.

AnoukMercierSTATEMENTAnoukMercier’spracticebeginsinthecollectingofimages:from17thand18thCenturyRomanticlandscapeetchingstohand-tintedVictorianphotographsandpostcardsofalpinehotels.Althoughvisuallyandhistoricallydisparate,theseimagesservetopresentidealiseddepictionsoftheirsubject(beitnatureorarchitecture)andAnoukusesthiscommonthreadtocombinethevisuallanguagesthattheyrepresentthroughoutherpractice.Theresultsarefictional‘collaged’landscapesandscenescomposedofmanyfragmentsofexistingetchingsandothercollectedimages.InfluencedbyRomanticismandtheSublimethesemelancholicworlds,undefinedbytimeorspace,mergereferencestothepastwithfuturisticpropositions.Indoingsotheypresenttimelessyearningforescapismthroughtheportrayalofafragmented,yetbeautifulideal-whilstalsoexploringthemysterious,theabysmalandtheuncannythatoftenlurksbehindidylls.
