For any athlete, participating in the
Olympic Games is certainly the
most impressive experience in his
career. No other sports event gets
the attention of so many people in
the whole world. Around the globe,
thousands of millions of people feel
with him when he succeeds or fails.
Whoever wins a medal, maybe even
a gold medal, in Olympic Games
goes down in sports history.
Also for the discipline performed by
the athlete, the Olympic Games en-
joy highest priority as the achieved
results can influence the image and
popularity of sport disciplines and
even of whole nations for years.
Of course this is also the case for
Germany and its horse sport. With
around 1.6 million riders and more
than one million horses, equestri-
an sport is one of the most popu-
lar sports in Germany. With a total
turnover of far more than five million
thousand Euro and approximately

300,000 jobs related to them, horses
have an enormous economic weight
in our country. On the balance sheet
of all Olympic Games, Germany is
the most successful horse sport na-
tion of the world and German-bred
horses have won most of the me-
dals. In the light of this, the Olympic
Games are of immeasurable value
for Germany as a horse sport nation.
Without doubt all the ones con-
cerned, be it athletes, trainer,
horse owners or other attendants
are under enormous pressure and
bear considerable responsibility
for themselves, the horse and the
image of the sport. In our society
which is so much focused on suc-
cess, all too often we forget what
an enormous effort it means just to
qualify for the Olympic Games, not
to mention to give a successful per-
formance at the Games. Therefore
my wish is that the whole German
country stands behind our riders
Breido Graf zu RantzauPresident of the German Equestrian Federation
during the Olympic Games, is hap-
py with their hopefully lot of good
results and feels understanding and
sympathy with them if the desired
success is not realised.
My particular thanks go to the many
people in voluntary and official
functions who support our riders
and horses in London. I am equally
grateful to all sponsors and patrons
who foster the German horse sport
at the Olympic Games with their en-
gagement. I expect all competitors
to always act fair towards their hor-
ses and their contenders, as this at-
titude is vital for our sport, and wish
them the success they strive for.

PORTRAIT OF THE MAIN SPONSOR AGCO FENDT
AGCO’s premium brand Fendt has
extended its commitment as main
sponsor of the German Equestrian
Team for the Olympic disciplines
until 2014. “The German riders
form one of the most successful
international teams in international
competition and have always been
a guarantee for medals”, explained
Martin Richenhagen, AGCO Chair-
man, President and Chief Executive
Officer, “We are proud to continue
our commitment with this outstan-

agricultural machinery at the world‘s
biggest international equestrian tour-
nament, the CHIO Aachen. In 2012
the Summer Games in London will
be the most important event for the
German Equestrian Team.
“Fendt is a worldwide leading high-
tech brand for tractors and the
German riders lead in international
competitions – that is an ideal com-
bination,” said Martin Richenhagen.
As the main sponsor, the traditional
brand Fendt, which has three loca-
tions in Germany, will finance part of
the equipment and act as the official
tractor partner of the German Olym-
pic Committee for Equestrian Sports
(DOKR) at the Training Center in Wa-
rendorf. Among other things, all the
clothing of the German riders will car-
ry the Fendt logo. With the continued
sponsorship of the German Equipe,
the agricultural equipment company
signalizes its long-term commitment
to German equestrian sports. The
head of the German team, Reinhard
Wendt, explained: “We are pleased
to continue the very successful coo-
peration with Fendt and are grateful
for the confidence that Fendt, as our
main sponsor, has shown in us. We
will be worthy international repre-
sentatives for Fendt and Germany.”
AGCO/Fendt will remain the main
sponsor of the German Equestrian
Team and will contribute signifi-
cantly towards helping the German
Equestrian Federation (FN) and the
German Olympic Committee for
Equestrian Sports (DOKR) meet the
financial and organizational chal-
lenges of this top-level sport in the
best way possible. AGCO/Fendt was
also the main sponsor of the German
Equestrian Team at the last World
Equestrian Games in Kentucky and
is the official product partner for

Dressage is one of the
most successful sports
in German equestrian-
ism. The aim of every
form of equestrian training is the de-
velopment of harmony between rid-
er and horse; dressage is more than
just the execution and presentation
of movements and figures. The tests
are aimed at training the horse gym-
nastically and to develop it correctly.
Through training, the rider obtains
a horse who reacts submissively to
the aids – the rider’s weight, legs
and reins. A correctly-trained horse
is the best possible basis for safe-
ty in equestrianism. Dressage also
increases the performance capabili-
ties of the horse. It serves, ultimate-
ly, to maintain the horse’s health
since, through correct training, the
strength of the horse will be built
up and its joints will be made more
flexible. No matter which equestrian
discipline one specialises in, without
dressage it is impossible. It is the ba-
sis for all other equestrian activities:
for the happy hacker, who rides up
and down hills with a balanced seat;
for the endurance rider, who needs
to ensure the health of their horse
so that it can cover 100-mile rides in
natural balance whilst conserving en-
ergy; and for the showjumper, who
can only get through all the turns
in a course and cover the distances
between jumps with a well-ridden,
gymnasticised horse with a sound
dressage training.
Competitive sport in Germany is di-
vided into the following classes: E
(Preliminary/Training Level), A (Nov-
ice/First Level), L (Elementary-Medi-
um/Second Level), M (Advanced Me-
dium/Third Level) and S (Advanced/
Fourth Level). The most difficult
classes are the top dressage tests
(Grand Prix & Grand Prix Special)
which are ridden at European and
World Championships as well as at
the Olympic Games. These tests,
which are drawn up by the Interna-
tional Equestrian Federation (FEI),
are ridden in a 20x60 arena and con-
sist of approximately 35 movements,
which must be memorised.
DRESSAGE
Dressage tests consist of a certain
number of movements which follow
a specific order or, in a Freestyle, can
be carried out in a freely-chosen or-
der to a musical composition. The
horse moves in the basic paces of
walk, trot and canter on straight or
curved lines, forwards, sideways or
even backwards. At the higher levels
of dressage, more difficult move-
ments are introduced (collected and
extended paces, half-passes, pas-
sage, piaffe, pirouettes, flying chang-
es, and so forth).
The Olympic tests are evaluated by
a group of seven judges and one
supervisor, all placed in different
positions, which form a jury, judging
on a scale which ranges from zero
points (‘not executed’) to ten points
(‘excellent’) for each movement. The
impulsion and the quality of the pac-
es, the horse’s looseness (relaxation
and suppleness), throughness and
submission, as well as the rider’s
seat and effectiveness in the use of
the aids are all evaluated. Marks are
deducted in the event of tests not
being ridden correctly (if movements
are forgotten). The guidebook to the
tests explains what is required of the
rider and the horse in each dressage
test.

this time results in time faults. Pen-
alty points are also given for refusals
or ‘dangerous riding’. Horse or rider
falls result in elimination.
The jumping phase, which is usually
preceded by a veterinary check test-
ing the condition of the horses, fol-
lows the common rules of jumping.
Here too, penalty points are accu-
mulated for knockdowns, falls and
refusals as well as for exceeding the
allocated time. The overall winner
is the combination with the fewest
penalties.
Two facts make the Olympic Games
extraordinary: the number of team
members and the second jumping
competition to determine the indi-
vidual medals. In no other Eventing
championship the team is com-
posed of five rider/horse combi-
nations, the three best of them to
count.
EVENTING
Eventing, an Olympic
discipline since 1912,
is the ‘multiple com-
petition’ of the eques-
trian disciplines. An eventing com-
petition consists of dressage, cross
country and jumping phases. The
official international term for event-
ing is Concours Complet (CC).
Dressage is ridden individually and
is always the opening event of an
eventing competition. It is judged in
the same way as a standard dres-
sage test; however, the final result
is converted into penalties. This
forms the basis for the subsequent
scoring.
Traditionally, the second phase
of an eventing competition is the
cross country over natural obstacles
of varying forms on a cross country
course. The course is to be complet-
ed within a certain time; exceeding

JUMPING
Classes are ridden over a course of
jumps. In individual and team com-
petitions, they can be carried out
over several rounds and, if neces-
sary – if two or more combinations
have successfully completed the
course without any faults, i.e. they
had a ‘clear round’ – a jump-off
against the clock may be required
to determine the winner. The rider
with the lowest number of penal-
ties is the winner. The course con-
sists, at international competitions,
of approximately 15 jumps of up to
1.6 metres in height and 2 metres
in length. An open water jump of
up to 4.75 metres in length is also
one of the obstacles which must be
successfully negotiated. The length
of a course ranges from 600 to 700
metres. Faults are accumulated for
knockdowns, refusals, falls and for
exceeding the allocated time.
Jumping is an Olympic
discipline since 1912.
The first ‘competitive
jumping’ over one or
several artificial jumps started in
1900. The object of the discipline is
to complete a course of jumps with-
out knocking any down as quickly
as possible. Jumping is charac-
terised by rapidity, technique and
courage. It is an extremely popular
sport in Germany, being a discipline
in which the country has enjoyed
extraordinary success. The specific
test in jumping is to ride a horse to
the jump in such a way that the an-
imal can produce an optimal flight
over the obstacle. The rider needs
plenty of skill, balance, feel for
rhythm and accuracy in the use of
the aids to ride the horse over the
jumps successfully. Jumping clas-
ses are offered, both nationally and
internationally, on a scale of E (for
beginners) to S (advanced) with up
to five stars, with the stars deter-
mining the difficulty of each class
(S* is easier than S**).

World Championships were held in
Kentucky. Therefore, equestrianism
is a role model and ground-breaker
for the integration of para-sports.
Grade I is reserved to the most
severely disabled riders. The ath-
letes are mostly wheelchair-bound,
either with a low balance or with
restricted arm or leg functionality.
Athletes with no balance, but with
good arm functionality are also per-
mitted to start in this category. Tests
are ridden in walk and trot; Grade I
is subdivided into Ia (only walk may
be ridden) and Ib (walk and trot are
permitted).
In Grade II, wheelchair-bound rid-
ers with severe impairment in leg
functionality and/or balance, but
with a good to lightly-impaired
arm functionality may participate.
Athletes without the movement
functionality of one limb are also
permitted to start in this category.
The test consists of walk and trot
sequences and, if desired, of certain
canter movements in the freestyle.
PARA-DRESSAGE
Para-Equestr ian ism
should not be confused
with horse therapy or
therapeutic riding. The
German Curatorship for Therapeu-
tic Riding (DKThR) e.V., which is an
auxiliary association of the German
Riding Federation (FN) e.V., cares
for and organises para-equestrian
sports. Special aids (such as, for
example, adapted saddles) make
riding accessible for people with
serious physical as well as mental
disabilities.
Disabled riders are classified in
five different grades from Ia to IV;
the allocation of the grade depends
on the severity of the disability and
therefore ensures a fair competi-
tion. The Ia Grade is reserved for
the most severely impaired, while
Grade IV is for the least impaired.
Each grade has its own tests.
In 2006 Para-Equestrian joined the
ranks of the other seven disciplines
and became the eighth discipline of
the FEI. For the first time combined
Grade III is the most highly repre-
sented competitive class in Germa-
ny. Athletes can generally walk with-
out support. They have disabilities
either in one limb, moderate disa-
bilities in both arms and both legs,
or severe impairments in the arms.
Athletes who are classified as blind
(B1) can also participate in this class,
as can those who have had one leg
amputated. The tests consist of
walk, trot and canter sequences.
The demands are similar to those in
Novice to Elementary classes (First/
Second Level) in able-bodied sport.
In Grade IV, riders participate in tests
similar to those up to Medium (Third
Level) dressage in able-bodied com-
petitions. Athletes have a disability
in only one or two limbs, or have
limitations in their vision. The tests
consist of walk, trot and canter se-
quences whereas the Freestyle can
include most dressage movements
such as, for example, tempi chang-
es.
Much emphasis is placed on correct
riding, accuracy, the riders’ aids,
the suppleness of the horse etc. in
judging the performance of all of the
Grades.
In Freestyle, it is possible to show
dressage movements from high-
er levels. However, there are cer-
tain restrictions due to safety
reasons (for example, a Grade II
rider cannot ride a pirouette, while
half-passes are permitted).
In view of how the horse moves,
anybody can recognise and judge
the influence of the rider. One will
be surprised at how quickly and
willingly the horses become used
to their riders’ ‘alternative’ aids. The
horses are ridden with skill, never
force. After all, each rider, whether
able-bodied or disabled, knows his/
her own limitations, but has learned
to tell the horse what he/she wants.

THE GERMAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE FOR EQUESTRIAN SPORT
The German Olympic Committee
for Equestrian Sport (DOKR) is a
member association of the German
Equestrian Federation (FN) and is
responsible for promotion top per-
formance sport in Germany. In addi-
tion to the four Olympic equestrian
disciplines of dressage, jumping
eventing and para-dressage, the
DOKR also supports the other four
FEI-equestrian sport disciplines of
endurance riding, carriage driving,
reining and vaulting.
The DOKR not only looks after the
top adult riders, but also the young
high-level riders in the three age cat-
egories of young riders (aged 18 to
21), juniors (aged 16 to 18) and pony
riders (up to age 16).
In addition, the DOKR is in charge of
managing and coordinating the na-
tional coaches. The national centre
for equestrian sporting excellence
in Warendorf (Bundesleistungsze-
ntrum Reiten, BLZ) plays an impor-
tant role in the DOKR’s promotion
of high-level sport. Each year, it of-
fers nearly 140 courses and training
events in which around 3.800 rid-
ers from all disciplines, with nearly
3.200 horses and ponies, participat-
ed. The national centre is also re-
sponsible for supporting and train-
ing the sports school of the federal
army in Warendorf.

EQUESTRIAN SPORT IN GERMANY
g Round about 1,240,000 men and

14 upwards) ride regularly. If boys
and girls under the age of 14 are
added, there is a total number of
1,600,000 to 1,700,000 riders, driv-
ers and vaulters in Germany. This
was revealed in a market research
in charge of the German FN in 2001.
g According to the same study, at
least about 870,000 persons in Ger-
many (from the age of 14 upwards)
would like to ride. Including boys
and girls under 14, this is a total
number of about 1,100,000 poten-
tial riders. 8,740,000 men and wom-
en in Germany (from the age of 14
upwards) have a general interest in
horses and equestrian sport.
Including the young people under
the age of 14, this is a total number
of nearly 11,000,000.
g There are more than 1,000,000
horses and ponies in Germany (60
million horses world wide). Thus the
horse population in Germany has
nearly quadrupled within the last 40
years.

EQUESTRIAN SPORT IN GERMANY
Organized Equestrian Sport*
g 7,707 riding and driving clubs
have 727,980 members. With these
figures the German Equestrian Fed-
eration (Fédération Equestre Nation-
ale, FN, founded 1905) the overall
national association of equestrian
sports, is the largest equestrian as-
sociation in the world.
g About 75 % of the FN members
(547,002) are female while the male
group is much smaller with only
180,978.
g The “Deutsche Reiterliche Vereini-
gung e. V. (FN)” is the umbrella
organisation for horse sport and
breeding in Germany with 17 re-
gional, 7 affiliated and 26 breeding
organisation who are member asso-
ciations of the FN.
g Directly affiliated to the FN are
also 3,901 commercial horse cen-
tres and 55,597 personal members.
Competition Sport*
g 3,594 equestrian events with
67,750 competitions and 1,459,828
starts were run. 30,984,265 Euro
were paid in prize-money.
g The FN issued 81,471 annual rid-
ing permits and 1,308 licences for
foreign riders competing in German
national events.
g The FN issued documents for
138,326 competition horses and
2,216 FEI passports for horses com-
peting internationally.
85
Successes*
g At Olympic Games (1912 to 2008)
German dressage-, jumping- and
eventing riders won 81 medals: 37
gold, 19 silver and 23 bronze med-
als.
g At World Championships (since
1953) in the eight official equestri-
an disciplines (Dressage, Jumping,
Eventing, Driving, Vaulting, Endur-
ance Reining and Para-Equestrian),
German riders, drivers and vaulters
won 205 medals: 85 gold, 60 silver
and 60 bronze medals.
g At European Championships
(since 1952) in the eight official
equestrian disciplines, including
Youth Championships, the number
of medals won by German riders,
drivers and vaulters amounts to
942: 401 gold, 299 silver, 242 bronze
medals.
This record of results renders Ger-
many the most successful horse
sport nation of the world, and most
likely equestrian sport is the most
successful sports discipline in Ger-
many.
Horses - The Economic Factor
g According to a scientific survey
nearly every 3rd horse creates one
job. According to this approximately
300,000 jobs are provided by sport
and hobby as well as the breeding
and keeping of horses in Germany.
Between 7,000 and 10,000 people
earn their living by giving riding les-
sons and education of riders and
horses. The horse is direct or indi-
rect main objective of more than
10,000 companies, craftsman’s es-
tablishments and service providers
in Germany.
g Riders and horse owners spend
approx. 2,6 billion Euro per year for
recurring costs around the horse. It
is extremely difficult to estimate the
entire turn-over of equestrian sport,
however, careful projections and es-
timations put the sum at well over 5
billion Euro.
g Further facts and figures can be
found in the Annual Report of the
German National Equestrian Feder-
ation (FN) and on the website www.
pferd-aktuell.de.

GERMAN HORSE BREEDING –THE GUARANTOR FOR SUCCESS
For decades, German horse breed-
ing has made its mark on interna-
tional equestrian sport. The names
of German horses are frequently
connected with Olympic, World and
European Championship titles, suc-
cesses at prestigious Grand Prix and
at World Cup finals.
The sophisticated breeding pro-
gramme (a requirement of the an-
imal breeding legislation) of the
German Equestrian Federation and
its associated warmblood breed
associations forms the basis for
the long-term sporting success of
German horses. Even though each
breed association has its own focus
and traditions, they all have agreed
on a common breeding aim. The
breeding programme ranges from
the judgement of foals to perfor-
mance tests for stallions and mares
and includes a breeding value esti-
mation on the basis of all sport and
breeding dates.
The horses are the results of a
programme of selective breeding,
whether they be Olympic Cham-
pions or vaulting horses at the riding
club. Almost a century ago, some
German breed associations de-
manded that only performance-test-
ed stallions be used for breeding. It
took until 1980, however, until the
stallion performance test became
mandatory for all future sires. Today
there are several levels of selection
from which detailed information can
be gained about stallions, mares
and their progeny.
Facts and Figuresg In 2011, 3,642 riding horse sires
and 64,824 riding horse brood mares
were registered. A total of 29,532
riding horse foals were registered
in 2011. In addition, we recorded in
the field of riding ponies and small
horses: 4,128 sires, 24,303 brood
mares and 9,647 foals.
g At the Olympic Games in Hong
Kong in 2008, 52 out of 194 com-
peting horses were proven Ger-
man bred horses. These German
bred horses won 18 of 45 possible
medals: eight gold, four silver and
five bronze. 19 of the 47 dressage
horses in Hong Kong were of Ger-
man origin. In the Olympic Jumping
competitions that were open to 77
horses, 29 German-bred horses
competed. At the World Champion-
ships of the eight official equestrian
disciplines in Lexington/Kentucky in
2010, 143 out of a total of 696 com-
peting horses had a proven German
pedigree and won a total of 53 med-
als. Thus German studbooks are by
far the most successful ones in the
world.
