Design Considerations
• Capacity
– 2,000 gpm Irrigation Water @ over 200 psi
– 1,000 gpm Domestic Water (Future)
• Well Pump
– Line Shaft Vertical Turbine
– 600 HP, 1800 RPM, Flowserve 15EMM 8-stage Pump

Well Pump Maintenance Access: skylight/hatch allows access to well
pump and provides natural light
Room Height: well pump motor dictates your room height, motor
inside the hatch = Heat
Local. Trusted. Advisors. J-U-B ENGINEERS, INC.
Irrigation Booster Pump
Horizontal Shaft: requires laser alignment
Maintenance Access: provide space on side for maintenance equipment
to pick motor/pump
Expansion Joint: helps reduce vibration in piping
Local. Trusted. Advisors. J-U-B ENGINEERS, INC.
Electric Room
Smart HVAC: VFD heat vents to pump room when needed
Local. Trusted. Advisors. J-U-B ENGINEERS, INC.
BuildingSkylight Hatch: for well pump removal
Double Door: allows large tool access to
well pump
Local. Trusted. Advisors. J-U-B ENGINEERS, INC.
Building
Large Doors: allow maintenance equipment access to booster
pumps from both sides of building.

Building
Pump to Waste: with appropriate mesh screens

Design Considerations
• Irrigation/Domestic
– One well pump multiple booster pumps
• Irrigation Booster (Monitored Flow)
• Single or Dual Domestic Booster(s)
– Meets domestic water standards
– Future reduced pressure backflow preventer
– Temporary pipe paint
• Well Field
– Additional Drawdown
Local. Trusted. Advisors. J-U-B ENGINEERS, INC.
Design Considerations
• Future Tank
– Adjacent tank in between well pump and
booster pump(s)
– Provide additional storage for domestic
system
• High Pressure
– Lower point in system
– Ductile iron well piping and yard piping
– VFDs allow ramp up and ramp down

Construction Startup
Line Shaft Vertical Turbine Well Pump• Anti-Reverse Ratchet
– Protects motor and
electrical equipment
– Mechanical ratchet that
stops shaft from spinning
in reverse when water is
draining back down the
column
Local. Trusted. Advisors. J-U-B ENGINEERS, INC.
Construction Startup
Line Shaft Vertical Turbine Well Pump• Anti-Reverse Ratchet
– Ratchet engages, slams,
engages, slams, etc.
– Extremely Loud
– Comes to rest
– Manufacturer theory:
• 800 ft x 12” Diameter Column
is about 20 tons of water
• Shaft flexes and reverses
spin

Construction Startup
Line Shaft Vertical Turbine Well Pump• Anti-Reverse Ratchet
– VFD Program was
modified to slow speed
down to near stop before
cutting loose
– May still slam during an
immediate shutdown like
a power outage
Local. Trusted. Advisors. J-U-B ENGINEERS, INC.
Construction Startup
• Dual VFDs
– Pros• Allows a wide variety of operations
• Allows a complex startup/shutdown that is protective of the system
• Well can target a strictly monitored flow at various operating conditions
– Cons• Complicated startup and programming challenges
• Short span of pipe between well and booster limits flexibility, and holds a high pressure

Construction Startup
• Shutdown Sequence
– Almost the same as startup but reversed
• Booster slows until flow is near zero
• Booster shuts off
• Well pump slows to about 43 Hz, which is the
minimum speed before the well almost dead heads
• Well shuts off
• Reverse ratchet engages

Construction Startup
• Safety Features
– Pressure Switches
– Zero Flow Timer
– Pump Motor Switches
• Vibration
• Overtemp
– Normal Shutdown for most alarms
• Protects well system and avoids potential shocks
to the water system
• Test them all during startup
