LOGO DESIGN

What is Logo Design

• The dictionary meaning of a logo is a symbol, sign, or emblem. Human beings have used such symbols throughout time to convey a succinct message. In present times, logos tend to be graphical in nature, designed for easy recognition of an organization. It is a tool to build an identity for the organization, as part of its trademark or brand, and to generate favorable thoughts and feelings about the organization.

5 Basic Type of Logo Design

• There are a number of ideas floating around about what a logo really is. If we were to ask most people what a logo is, they would have a variety of different answers, but they would probably all be right in one way or another. The reality is, there are a number of different types of logo “marks” you could choose to utilize for yourself. we’ll briefly explain the 5 main types of logos and show some examples of each you’ll probably recognize.

4

1. SYMBOL OR ICON• This type of logo represents the company in a simple but bold manner. In

most cases, the image is abstract and stylized to give visual interest. Most companies that use this type of logo will have a very simple main logo, but may choose to create additional alternative versions that appear a little more flashy. The human mind can easily remember a simple form much easier than a complex one. It’s best to use a simple symbol or icon if you plan on building a large business. You probably recognize symbol logos like Apple, Shell and Mercedes-Benz.

2. WORD MARK• These are uniquely styled text logos that spell out the company or brand

name. Many times, custom fonts are created specifically for brands to use across all their marketing and branding collateral. Some examples include Facebook, Disney and Sony.

6

3. LETTER MARK• Letter marks are exclusively typographic. They use a symbol representing

the company through the use of its initials or the brands first letter. Many companies choose to use this type of logo because their initials can better graphically illustrate the company better than the full name (name is too long), the name is hard to pronounce, or it’s just not distinct enough to carry its own weight. Some companies and organizations that use letter marks include Hewlett-Packard, Chanel and General Electric.

7

4. COMBINATION MARK• These logos combine a word mark and a symbol or icon to give the

flexibility for the use of either or both elements across a variety of applications. A well-designed combination mark looks just as good with the elements separate as it does with them together. You might recognize some combo marks like Hawaiian Airlines, Adidas and Sprint.

5. EMBLEM• An emblem logo encases the company name within the design. Some

examples include Starbucks, the NFL and Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.

2D or 3D Logo Design: Which Is Best for Your Brand

• A logo design is typically thought of as a two-dimensional (2D) brand icon, but since the Internet became commonplace in the late 1990s, brands began thinking beyond two-dimensions. Suddenly, they weren’t bound by the constraints of print advertising anymore, and new opportunities appeared where businesses could use three-dimensional logo design beyond expensive television advertising.

• Apple moved from a flat 2D logo to its monochrome 3D logo in 1998, and many other companies followed in Apple’s footsteps with their own 3D logo designs. But just because other brands are going 3D in their logo designs doesn’t mean you should do it, too.

2D or 3D Logo Design: Which Is Best for Your Brand

• Branding experts and designers debate for and against 3D logos all the time. Certainly, a 3D logo is more visually dynamic in some media, such as television and online. 3D logos also lend themselves well to animation and can truly bring a brand personality to life. However, 3D logos can be more expensive to produce offline and 3D effects don’t always translate well to the print medium. Think about where you’ll use your logo most frequently, so you choose a design that reproduces well in that medium.

• The most important thing to consider when you weigh the 2D or 3D logo design options is your brand image. You don’t want to make the mistake of creating a 3D logo just because it’s the trendy thing to do. If a 3D logo design doesn’t match your brand image, then steer clear.

2D or 3D Logo Design: Which Is Best for Your Brand

• That said, there is no crystal clear answer to whether you should create a 2D or 3D logo design. The best answer is to create both at the same time. Choose one (typically the 2D version) to be your primary logo design and the other (usually the 3D version) as the secondary design used when the medium warrants it.

• Bottom-line, you can never go wrong with a 2D logo design but you could gain some awareness and recall points from a 3D logo. It’s worth it to consider creating both for your brand. The reason is simple. 2D logo designs are more adaptable. However, if you must make the 3D design your primary logo, make sure the 2D logo isn’t created as an afterthought. Think about the consistency of your entire brand identity, not just the design of a single logo.
