CHAMBER

Chamber’s history includes community serviceResearch into the history

of the Logan County Cham-ber of Commerce makesthat old saying, “The morethings change, the morethey stay the same,” ringtrue.

The Chamber is celebrat-ing its 75th anniversary thisyear. That’s, as ChamberBoard President Tom Bed-ford put it at this year’s an-nual meeting, 75 years ofmaking local businessesgrow.

Records about the start ofthe Chamber are a little mur-ky. What is clear is that onDec. 7, 1937, the articles ofincorporation for the Ster-ling Chamber of Commercewere filed with the state.

According to an article hang-ing on the wall of the Cham-ber offices, the Chamberhad “loosely” existed prior tothat date, working togetherto “further and promote thegeneral business interests”of the community.

The filing apparently cameafter some months of weeklymeeting to determine thefeasability and direction ofthe organization. It seems, according to an Oct. 2, 1937editorial in the Sterling Ad-vocate, that the chamberhad been suffering from alack of sustained interestand enthusiasm. However, areorganized board, led byS.I. Fredregill, began meet-ing to take and discuss sug-gestions for its future.

By December, a new sec-retary — R.M. Thompson ofCanon City — had beenhired. Information availableat the Chamber office, according to a newspaper re-port, included road condi-tions and maps of the state.

Even in those early days, the Chamber was involved incommunity activities such asthe celebration of LoganCounty’s 50th birthday.Promotions such as holiday“Shop local” campaigns havecarried through the years.

Milestones for the Cham-ber include the changing ofits name from Sterling toLogan County Chamber inthe 1970s, and the move intothe historic train depot inthe 1980s.

We all want the best care for our loved ones when theyare ill. But when someone we love is living with a terminalillness, it’s hard to go it alone. That’s when hospice canhelp.Hospice enables people to live with dignity, not

pain at home, in a nursing home, or in an assisted living.Patients and families are given individualized emotional,

physical, and spiritual support at this critical time.
