Material: In this week task the material for building a tower is medium density fibreboard blocks. MDF is made from =mber fibres glued under heat and pressure. They are dense, light, s=ff, and flat. Shape and weight of blocks we used in week one are the same, they all shaped in cuboid blocks with flat surface and light weighted. Brief: Build a tower using provide material(MDF blocks) and only use this material to build a tower, which an entry. The space inside should big enough for one elephant toy could get in and turn around. The tower should built as tall as possible. Force: Defini=on : According to Ching(2008), A FORCE is any influence that produces a change in the shape or movement of a body. Forces are represents by arrows, the length of arrows is propor=onal to the magnitude and the direc=on is showed by the posi=on of arrow. Tension: Tension forces are stretch and elongate the material. Compression: Compression forces result in the shortening of the material. Building TowerWeek 1

Force:  Defini=on:  According  to  Ching(2008),  A  FORCE  is  any  influence  that  produces  a  change  in  the  shape  or  movement  of  a  body.

The  base  was  build  in  circular  shape,  compare  with  the  other  groups  work  which  are  square  shaped  base,  the  round  base  are  stable  and  easier  to  build,  because  for  the  square  shaped  base  when  built  the  edge  and  corner  the  blocks  are  in  different  direc=ons,  the  surface  which  touched  both  blocks  are  smaller  than  a  round  one.

In  this  stage,  the  difference  of  two  side  is  start  to  appear.  We  make  two  to  three  layer  of  blocks  which  are  changed  direc=ons.  By  doing  this  there  are  more  surface  area  and  less  gap  area,  to  make  it  more  stable.

It  is  harder  to  connect  at  the  corner  and  edge  when  it  is  a  square  shaped  base.  And  by  the  load  path  shows  in  different  ways.

Load  Path  and  reac=on  of  tower

one  side  of  our  tower  is  curved  and  one  side  of  tower  is  much  more  straight  than  another  side,  aVer  we  achieve  the  height  of  the  elephant  we  start  to  built  it  in  smaller  area  and  on  the  straight  side  of  the  tower,  and  make  a  hole  on  the  curved  side.  Because  at  that  side  there  are  less  load  force,  make  it  easier  to  make  a  hole.

Because  of  the  gaps  between  two  blocks  and  at  next  layer,  put  the  block  on  the  gap,  the  load  path  is  almost  a  straight  line,  which  means  is  very  stable.

Building  Tower-‐  Week  2 Material:  The  material  we  used  in  this  week  is  Balsa  wood,  Balsa  is  a  fast  growing  tropical  tree,  the  =mber  slice  of  Balsa  wood  is  strong  and  yet  very  light  weighted,  Balsa  wood  is  easy  to  cut  when  cuXng  along  the  grains.        Brief:  Build  a  tower  using  Balsa  wood  and  glue,  build  as  tall  as  possible.

The  stand  of  this  tower  is  based  on  a  triangle  shape,  by  this,  triangle  is  as  stable  as  a  rectangle  one  and  save  the  limited  materials.

Because  of  the  different  size  of  two  strips,  and  there  has  no  supports  at  this  point  it  was  not  stable,  to  resolve  this  problem,  put  a  liZle  =mber  strip  around  this  point  and  keep  it  straight.

The  stand  of  this  tower  is  based  on  a  triangle  shape,  by  this,  triangle  is  as  stable  as  a  rectangle  one  and  save  the  limited  materials.
