The headblocks The headblocks are made in extra heavy, shock-resistant welded steel construction and are moved on precision ma-chined block supports. All lumber supports are hard-chrome plated and exchangeable. All headblocks have independent positioning by means of servo-hydraulic setworks with very high setting speeds and can therefore be adapted to every log shape. The clamping is done hydraulically. The applied pressu-re can be adjusted stepless by remote control from the opera-tor panel to suit the sawing requirements. To keep a low build height, each headblock is equipped with two upper dogs, which are applied according to log size. The dogs can be adjusted independently from the headblocks. This function allows to ad-just the dog standout position stepless and to pull the lumber against the vertical supports to ensure dimensional accuracy of even the last board being sawn.

The log turners Log turners are on board mounted and are available as single chain arm turners or V-type double arms to provide for fast turning in both directions. The spacing of the log-turners can be customized to individual requirements.

The slab turners The slab turners allow the fast turning and putting upright of half-sawn logs or slabs.

The carriage frame and running drive The high precision of the carriage running drive and track con-tributes significantly to the accuracy of the sawn lumber. The wheels are made of tempered, wear resisting special steel and are generously sized with a diameter of 300 mm and wide wheel faces.

The headblock forms a unit with an own axle and a pair of wheels, to avoid any flexing of the carriage frame. This design allows the spacing of the headblocks to be customized to suit the individual requirements.

The carriage drive The carriage drive is generally done separate from the log bandmill with an own drive system to have always constant drive situations, i.e. with frequency converter drives. The choice available is between a compact hydrostatic drive system with a gearless low revolution drive motor or a highly dynamic electric drive system with a frequency-converter controlled gear motor. Both drive concepts are equipped with a strongly dimensioned steel rope and winch drum. With the electric drive system, a regenerative drive concept is available as an option.

The hydraulic system All movements for log/lumber manipulation on the carriage are hydraulic and the required supply of hydraulic power is provi-ded from a stationary power unit. This reduces the carriage masses required to be moved and increases the dynamics.

The power supply system Hydraulic, electric power and bus control cables are connected to the carriage via a top-mounted low wear Flex Power Chain.

The central oil lubrication The automatic central oil lubrication supplies all slide move-ments of carriage and rails and thus reduces the maintenance work drastically.

Log bandmills Modul EBB100, 1600, 1800 (optional with double cut, slabber)

The bandmill wheels Due to the high stresses, both wheels are made from high quality spheroid graphite iron. The surface hardness of thismaterial allows years of operation without needs to regrind the wheels. The design of the wheels has been optimized by FiniteElements computer calculations. The solid bottom wheel with it‘s higher momentum always pulls the band through the cut.

The saw blade guides The saw guides are cartridge type pressure guides, pressing the saw blade out of the vertical line during the cut. To avo-id any collision between clamped log and the saw blade during the return move of the carriage for the next cut, the bandmill with the saw is set back hydraulically, controlled by an initiator sensor. The top guide is height adjustable with a hydraulic cylinder. The bandmill is set on guides and can be fitted optionally with a servo-hydraulic setwork. Thus the maximum opening between headblock and band-saw can be increased to 1400 mm for oversize logs. The bandmill is optionally available with wheels for double cut action.

The wheel inclination For precise alignment of the sawblade running the top wheel is tilted with an electric motor with remote control.

Controls and comfort of operation • Industrial type PC, operator terminal and color monitor• Windows operator interface with menu-driven controls• Permanent display of all important values and parameters• Extensive operation messages displayed in plain language, with test and service functions• Ergonomically designed, comfortable operator’s control chair• Quick and easy operation, full operator control and overridefunctions• Automatic knee setting for next cut, selection of fixed board dimensions and next cut dimension with hot keys.• Automatic positioning of the carriage for reloading and automatic selection of the required carriage knees and log turners• Reduced wiring work, short start-up times and easy maintenance and trouble-shooting because of decentralized control design.

Tandem–Log bandmills Modul EBB V/Tandem-Log bandmills (optional with double-cut action, slabber)

The systems The Tandem Log bandmills can, together with the slabber unit open the log and saw off 2 boards in one pass. The EBB V/2 + PF 19 (Tandem Log bandmill and slabber unit) cuts only on the forward pass of the carriage. The first bandmill has a servo-hydraulic setwork for positioning. The second bandmill is pulled back hydraulically for the return pass of the carriage by an initiator.

The patented version EBB VR/2 + PF 19 (Tandem-Log Bandmill with double cut action and slabber unit) cuts on the forward pass of the carriage and if desired or necessary on the return pass as well. Both bandmills have servo-hydraulic setworks. The first saw entering the log makes the outer cut. The respective second saw makes the inner cut. The use of the EWD Tandem Bandmill system with forward and backward sawing action can increase the sawn volu-me performance, compared to a conventional single band headrig by up to 250 % (please see the production compa-rison on the next page).

The application The Tandem Log Bandmills are normally used as primary breakdown machines. They can however –in the double cut mode –also do the resawing. Based on the sawmill size and production program, a Tandem Log bandmill system can be combined with an automatic edger system with sawing heights up to 120 mm or a combination edger/gang sys-tem with sawing heights up to 225 mm or a resawing center with highly flexible single arbor circular saws with sawing heights up to 225 mm or double arbor circular resaws with sawing height of up to 360 mm.

The operation The operator can always decide if he wants to use just one saw or both saws for a pass, depending on the individual circumstances. Logs can be processed in a semi-automatic mode, based on a selected sawing pattern, if the log quality does not require a grade sawing breakdown.

The hydraulic strain system The sawing accuracy of a bandsaw depends heavily on the bandsaw strain system. The EWD strain system offers a very fast reaction time and instantaneous shockabsorption. One short stroke, quick reaction hydraulic cylinder provides strain, which can be adjusted infinitely to create the saw strain from 0 - 200 N/mm². The saw strain is then automatically kept constant, even when encountering different sawing loads, such as changing log density or knots.

The wheel bearings The saw strain is directly transferred to the machine frame by utilizing the dead arbor concept. The drive shaft is thereby not loaded with bending stresses. Advantage: minimum bearing wear, highest precision and smooth running.
