Would you give money to Al-Qaeda?

By the time you read my letter the story of the Rana Plaza clothing factory building near Dhaka which collapsed on 24 April will be old news. The authorities say about 2,500 people were injured and 2,437 people were rescued with the death toll

in excess of 1000.

Personally, I find it irritating that our media flourishes upon crisis reporting and seldom gives us follow-up. What happened next, what were the effects of the crisis upon those involved? It’s as if we are encouraged to be voyeurs

with little concern for the consequences upon the lives of those involved.

The Bangladeshi factory incident has lasted longer than most reports because it has repercussions for us here in the UK. Allegedly, this building was eight stories high, with additional levels added over the years, without permission, in order to increase the owners profit. Indirectly, we are involved because factories like this one employ some of the poorest paid labour in the world to produce goods for sale in Western countries at low prices through

outlets like Primark, Asda and Tesco.

Immediately following the collapse of this building there were serious local protests involving clashes with the police over the conditions and pay that many such workers were forced to accept. Those familiar with the history of the pay and working conditions of the poor in this country in the 19th century will be aware that we have ‘been there and done that.’ People like Lord Shaftesbury and the introduction of the ‘Factory Acts’, together with the

influence of trade unions, put a stop to child labour and other such abuses.

Today we find ourselves living in an affluent society with economic problems that the Bangladeshi people could only dream of. Whilst there are many relatively ’poor’ people in our society, do we really need shops to sell us goods at prices which are guaranteed to keep those who produce them on or below the poverty level? By doing so could we be contributing to the anger

and resentment which fuels extremist terrorist groups like Al-Qaeda?

Archbishop Tutu, from South Africa, in his book ‘Made For Goodness’ writes: “...sometimes we do not actively opt to do wrong. But because we don’t actively choose to do what is right, we slip into wrongness. The practices of

goodness are practices of vigilance and conscious choice.”

It’s a powerful thought that even when shopping my choices can affect the quality of life for others.

Welcome to the June edition of the ‘Link’.

Looks like summer is just around the corner as our garden bursts into life. Obviously others are having the same thoughts with Hartley Wespall (among others) opening up some of

its beautiful gardens (p51).

It may seem early but now is the time to start thinking about your

entry for Sherfield Show (p27).

We’ve got some diverse articles this month ranging from Sherfield Church Bells (p12) to remembrance carvings from oak felled in the 1987

storm (p31).

The next issue of the link will be the first ever July only edition as we strive to improve the magazine and keep you more up to date with

what’s happening here.

Our meeting for the month of May was our birthday party. Terry Morris entertained everyone with music and songs on his electric organ, He also brought along his song books and everyone enjoyed a

sing song with the members giving requests for their favourite songs.

We also enjoyed an afternoon birthday tea of sandwiches and sausages rolls prepared by Jean Berntsen our chairperson and Pam Monger committee member and lovely home made cakes by Gwen

Moring committee member, Many thanks to them from everyone.

The meeting ended with our monthly raffle. The next meeting on June

St Leonard’s Church Bells – not only for religion. Although most people now associate the sound of church bells with religion, they have been, and continue to be, rung for many other things. Most recently, Sherfield bells were among the numerous bells rung at precisely 8.12 am on the first day of the Olympics to mark the start of the games. The bells have rung to

mark local events, national victories and important anniversaries such as the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. Of course, we

also ring regularly for Sunday Services.

We have six bells at St Leonard’s, with a combined age of more than 2000 years. Our oldest bell was cast in around 1430, during the reign of Henry VI, and our heaviest bell (weighing just over half a ton) was cast in 1582, a few years before the Spanish Armada arrived. We cannot be sure exactly when they were rung several centuries ago but historians tell us that, before the arrival of modern communications, secular uses of bells included giving warning of emergencies such as fire and attack. We can be sure that their use has been tempered by changes in the religious climate – our oldest bell has rung for pre-reformation Roman Catholic masses, post-reformation Church of England services and was probably restricted to secular purposes

when the Puritans banned use of bells for worship in the 17th century.

The Puritan ban meant that the bells were rung almost entirely for pleasure and this encouraged ringers to develop a way of ringing which is now much more controlled and (I think) much more enjoyable than the technique used in almost all other countries. Our own band of ringers is aged from teenagers to those who now draw a pension. We are always keen to welcome visits from anyone who would like to watch us ring and anyone (whether or not they attend Church Services) thinking about learning to ring. Masterclass by Festival Mastersingers Everyone with an interest in singing is invited to St James's Church, Bramley, in the afternoon of Thursday 13 June, when the a cappella supergroup Voces8 will conduct a choral workshop/masterclass.

First-night attraction of this year's Bramley & Little London Music Festival, Voces8 has a firm commitment to music education as well as concert performance, working with schoolchildren and enthusiastic amateurs of all ages. Its Bramley workshop is expected to run 2.00-4.00pm, is free entry ... and can be rounded off, deliciously, with cream tea in the Cross House. THE STRATFIELD SAYE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

(Grants for Children and Young People)

The Foundation was established by George Pitt in 1739 and provides grants for children and young people under 18 in the Parishes of Stratfield Saye and Beech Hill. The Trustees would like to encourage parents of Stratfield Saye and Beech Hill to make use of this historic charity. All claims, with accompanying receipts, for extra curricular activities, where not provided by the Local Education Authority will be considered sympathetically. David Ibbotson ordained David prepared for ordination and served in our Benefice for three years. Last year he left us to take up a new post as Curate at Tewkesbury Abbey. In the Church of England in the first year you are ordained as a Deacon (apprentice!). At the end of the first year you are

ordained as a Priest which is the equivalent to a fully fledged Vicar! David will be ordained on Sunday 29th June, St Peters Tide, in Gloucester Cathedral. Please pray for him as he begins his second year of Curacy at Tewkesbury Abbey.

This is Helen Burningham, our CMS Missionary. Yes, Missionaries do seem to

get younger don’t they!

She is situated in Boma, South Sudan and is there to work in the community which lives in an atmosphere of fear and unrest. She writes,” It has made me more aware of the importance of peace

especially for this new nation, South Sudan.” To help her convey impartiality she is learning two languages ‘Murle’ & ‘Jie’. She is

finding it hard to do but is determined not to show favouritism.

On Sunday 30th June, Helen’s parents, Sabine & Richard Burningham are speaking at St. Leonard’s Morning Service and we will donate the cash collection to CMS, specifically to support Helen in

her work of reconciliation.

Sad News & Good News!

Due to the huge popularity of the Benefice BBQ it became so large

that we were unable to cope with the numbers. So we have decided

not to continue with the BBQ.

Instead we plan to introduce a Harvest Lunch to be held in Sherfield

Village Hall on Sunday 22nd September for all who wish to come.

Beat Officer’s Reports Speed Enforcement:

During April colleagues from Rural Policing Unit have carried out speed enforcement in the beat area. No offenders for Sherfield. Vehicle Crime There were 6 incidents of vehicle crime in April: 3

cars were broken into in pub / beauty spot car parks; 2 were damaged – one has been detected; 1 theft from (wheels). For the second quarter of 2013 the priority will be theft of heating oil –

carrying out patrols, having been advised of a delivery. Residents have been informing the beat team when their oil is being delivered; to date there have been no reported thefts. Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) the statistics for April are: there were 7

calls, 2 related to nuisance vehicles, 1 to travellers, with 1 for dogs, litter & speeding; plus 1 for general nuisance . As always I request that any incidents are reported to 101. The number of incidents in April, for the beat area was 56 (compared to 94 in 2012; along with the 7 incidents of ASB (compared to 18 in 2012); there were 17 crimes, compared to 30 in 2012 ; the incidents included 5 x burglaries & 5 x thefts. The number of incidents across the other beat areas ranged from 34 to 63, with Tadley having 159. The number of ASB incidents ranged from 3 to 9, with Tadley having 30. The number of crimes ranged from 7 to 17, with Tadley having 43.

Death by (Musical) Misadventure By Mike Abrams, series continued from April:

Anton Webern

3 December 1883 – 15 September 1945

Apart from the quality of his music, the Austrian composer Webern is notable for two curious reasons: firstly his tiny output, all of which can be accommodated on six CDs; and secondly the unfortunate nature of his death. After studying musicology at the University of Vienna, he obtained employment as conductor in a succession of theatres in Austria, Germany and Prague. His career flourished when he moved to Vienna, where one of his roles was conductor of the Vienna Workers Symphony Orchestra. During the thirties, he gave private talks on the evils of

Nazism and, following Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, his music was described by the authorities as a manifestation of "cultural Bolshevism" and "degenerate art". The annexation of Austria in 1938 made his position precarious, and performance of his music was banned. Webern’s son was killed when a train was bombed in February 1945, after which he and his wife fled Vienna for Mittersill, near Salzburg, to stay with his married daughter and grandchildren. On the evening of September 15, three-quarters of an hour before a curfew was due to have effect, he stepped outside the house to smoke a cigar given by his son-in-law, who was in trouble for black market activities. US Army cook Raymond Norwood Bell of North Carolina, who was on duty nearby, may well have mistaken the time, for he shot and killed the composer as he was lighting the cigar. The soldier died of alcoholism in 1955, overcome

by remorse.

The impressive and historical National Trust property The Vyne, near Basingstoke, will be hosting a spectacular exhibition of floral art during the month of June. 200 paintings from members of The Society of Floral Painters, will be on

display portraying floral art in a variety of

styles and a broad range of mediums.

This exhibition runs from 1st to 23rd June, Monday to Friday 12 noon to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am to 4 pm. It is free, upon normal admission charge to the house.

April is a quieter month than many at the Council, due to the local elections – and this continues into the beginning of May. I am delighted that my friend and colleague, Cllr Keith Chapman, was re-elected to represent Bramley and Sherfield as part of the ‘Calleva and Kingsclere Division’. And, if you are reading this from outside of my patch, in Taylors Farm, I was also delighted that my friend and colleague, Cllr Elaine Still, was re-elected to represent you as part of the ‘Loddon Division’. Though formal Council meetings are reduced, there has been plenty to do locally. One important issue is Razors Farm, where a planning application has been submitted and your Councillors will all (at the time of writing) be meeting with the developers very shortly to raise concerns about what is being proposed. Turning to a positive, I’ve consistently called for broadband to remain at the top of the agenda at the Council. We have worked to place the Borough at the forefront of the BT Openreach national rollout plan. Having upgraded Basingstoke, BT are starting to upgrade the Turgis Green exchange, which covers residents in and around Sherfield and Bramley to superfast broadband – bringing fibre optic technology to more areas with a minimum 24Mb speed by the end of the year. The Council is also pushing for action to address ‘not spots’ with low speeds or no broadband connection. As Deputy Leader of the Council, I took a decision to spend an additional £225,000 to jointly fund the Hampshire Broadband Programme, which has had significant funding from both the County Council and HM Government. On that note, I am pleased to report that I have been re-appointed as Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Strategy, which means I continue to be responsible for the Council Plan, IT Projects such as better broadband, major initiatives such as our Basingstoke Town Centre vision and strategic regeneration, including Basing View and the Leisure Park. Things are really happening now!

Fund raising efforts have meant the we

have now passed the £200,000 mark.

A small flint wall has been built at the side of the Church, where the extension will be built, as a sample of flint work for

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council

to approve.

Test drilling to 10 metres prior to piling was done on 15th May. The mud samples

were then taken for analysis.

5 companies are being asked to tender for

the building work.

Many will remember the night in 1987 when a storm felled many

trees. One was an oak which fell on Alec Gosden’s farm.

As his hobby was carving wood, he planked and stored the oak tree in readiness for carving, but sadly died before

he could use it.

In 2003, after his death, his son, Ivan, and the Gosden family, cleared and flattened the area of the Churchyard that is now the Garden of Remembrance and Graham Kirby supervised the

laying and watering of the turf, weeks before he too died.

A conversation in the pub between Ivan, Sandy Johnston and Alan Taplin (renowned wood carver of Sherfield on Loddon) led Alan to agree to use a piece of the oak to mark the Garden of Remembrance at St. Leonard’s, particularly in memory of Alec

Gosden, Sandy and Janet’s son, Adam and Graham Kirby.

It then took ten years for the wood to be ready and the carving to

be done.

On Sunday 5th May 2013 the work was presented to the

Church.

It is a beautiful piece, depicting the oak leaves and acorns of the original local tree,

prolonging its life for years to come.

Sherfield Players Performance of Steel Magnolias

I must start this with an apology. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this play. The thought of spending a few hours in the company of women in a beauty salon didn’t set my heart

racing. The last time I’d done it was probably 40 years ago.

However I shouldn’t have worried. From the opening sentences I, like the rest of the audience, was transported to the deep south (that’s Louisiana not the Isle of Wight) and thoroughly engrossed in the story as it unfolded. The play is set in Truvy's beauty salon and concerns

the friendships of the women who regularly gather there.

It all started on the morning of Shelby’s wedding where we discovered, as Shelby passed out, her diabetes. This would lead to later trauma and her eventual death, after she became pregnant. (The story is based on the writer, Robert Harling’s, loss of his sister to diabetes). Throughout the play the dialogue brought out the underlying steel of the ladies as they used humour to counter the

adversities in their lives and leant on the friendships between them.

It would be unfair to single out any one performance as the ensemble cast played to all their strengths and brought us a wholly captivating evening. This has to be one of Sherfield Players best.

Now we’ll just have to wait till November for the next play.

Neighbourhood planning, which was introduced by the Localism Act (Nov 2011), is a new way for communities to decide the future of the places where they live and work. It enables local communities to have more say in where new houses, businesses, shops and community facilities should go in their local area and can allocate sites for development. They may also include more detailed planning policies, for example to define how new development should look. County Award for Stratfield Saye Church

Stratfield Saye Church had a major facelift last year. In recognition of this work, Hampshire and the Islands Historic Churches Trust presented us with

an award on May 5th, in Winchester Cathedral. The photo shows our Architect, Chris Romain thanking the Trustees for the award, flanked by Revd. Bob Politt and by Geoffrey Preston the project manager for the work. The award - named after Corinne Bennett, the Trust's founder - is for the Hampshire church which had the most interesting or imaginative

scheme of improvement during 2012. We're very proud to have won it. Since it was formed 25 years ago, Hampshire Historic Churches Trust, which helped us with the cost of the restoration, has financed work on churches throughout the County. Our Business Meeting in May followed the usual format after our President advised those present of the cards of congratulation and thanks for the very enjoyable afternoon of our 90th birthday. After a short break, Dee read out the Resolution to go forward to the National AGM. It concerns the decline of our high streets and town centres. After much discussion on the problems caused by on-line shopping, extortionate rents, out-of-town supermarkets with everything under one

roof, etc. those present voted unanimously for the resolution.

The last business part of the afternoon was our Annual Meeting. Annual Reports were given by the Secretary and Treasurer and Dee, our President, gave her address. The entire Committee were willing to stand again and were voted back “en bloc” and Dee was unanimously returned as President for a further year but she advised everyone that she would be

standing down next year.

Tea followed and the raffle was drawn.

Children’s Holiday Art Workshops at Sherfield on

Loddon Local artist Louise Hight will be holding weekly children’s Art workshops at The Liddell Hall on Wednesdays throughout the school holidays. Having worked for the commercial and fine art industries for over 30 years, Louise trained as a teacher and worked as Head of Art at Daneshill Preparatory School, before setting up after school art

classes for children in the local area

Louise is offering a large variety of workshops for children aged 5 to 11. They include T-shirt painting, mask making, print workshop, multi-media design, mosaic, wall hangings and Tudor portrait painting. All materials and aprons are supplied and the classes run from 10am to 3pm. The children can attend a morning or afternoon session or bring

a packed lunch and stay all day.

The classes offer a fun, friendly and creative environment for all abilities, where children have the opportunity to explore their creativity under supportive guidance. Demonstrations and one to one tuition form the basis for learning techniques and the children will then be

encouraged to experiment and develop their personal artwork.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

We will be entertained at our next meeting on Monday 17th June by Kevin Hughes who will be telling us all about Smaller Trees and Shrubs for Any Sized Garden. Kevin has worked

in the horticultural industry for many years and has a passion for not only plants but also birds, mammals and insects. He established his nursery in Heale Garden, near Salisbury in 2005 and specialises in ethical growing, although he does not aim for organic status he has almost zero use of pesticides. He has an impressive collection of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants, many of which are not readily available in the trade. On Monday 8th July we will be venturing outdoors for a garden visit and

barbecue at Hartley Mill in Hartley Wespall. Jane Malarkey, one of our own gardening club members, has kindly opened her wonderful garden for our summer barbecue. Hartley Mill has a traditional English garden set in beautiful Hampshire countryside. Being a mill house, it is surrounded by a number of streams which effectively form a moat. It has stunning borders which hold a number of unusual plants and also boasts an excellent vegetable garden despite the hares and deer. We recently took part in our Area Quiz hosted by Yateley NWR at Yateley School. There were various rounds including identifying famous bridges, islands and leaves as well as answering questions on sport, geography, history, the theatre and music. We started off very well, but gradually slid into 6th place out of 11. However, we all enjoyed the evening which included a ploughman’s supper and a selection of cakes. Our May meeting was held at the home of Sheena Archer who gave an interesting talk on the history of Sherfield and in particular the occupants of Park Corner Cottage from 1901 to 1911. Her beautiful scale (1:12) model of the cottage was on display complete with an amazing assortment of furniture, fittings, tools etc. all to scale. The attention to detail is truly astonishing. Sheena found the cottage at an auction in Reading quite by chance, so she bought it and set about making everything to go inside. As at 1901 the cottage was occupied by the Ham family, Edmund and Ann together with their adult sons and daughter, who all followed a skilled trade (carpenter, barber, plumber, dressmaker). There was also a young girl who might have been the daughter of Kate, the Ham’s daughter. At the time the cottage was rented from the Wellington estate before it was bought by the Wills family. Sheena has researched the history of the cottage as far back as the 1700s and is a fascinating insight into village life. Park Corner Cottage was, as the name suggests, at the corner of the parkland of what is now Sherfield School. There was no A33 in those days, just a road through the centre of the village, Reading Road. Various houses around the village today were there then and numerous businesses to suit all needs. People hardly needed to travel to buy anything. For example, there were carpenters, builders, wheelwrights, dressmakers, shoemakers, a baker who lived in what is now House Twenty8, laundresses, saddlers, farriers and of course, Jackson’s stores, where there was the post office. There were four pubs and four chapels (as well as the church) and each summer they took the children of the village on an outing by horse and cart where entertainment and races took place. Donations were made to the church fund after the talk. Later in the summer, Sheena will take us on a walk around the village to see which houses and cottages survive today from that period. We all enjoyed the talk immensely. Our next event is the evening ramble at Mattingley, followed by a meeting debating marriage.

The Hackwood Art Festival, which takes place in Tunworth in

June this year.

It's a wonderful community family event with over 40 art based workshops and demonstrations which cater for all sections of the community. The festival has been going since 2005 and

exhibits the work of up to 80 artists from all over the country including artists from this

region.

The festival will be raising money this year

for St Michael's Hospice.
