GASTOWNDISTRICTFACTS:Gastown was named after saloon owner ‘Gassy’ Jack Deighton – he was nicknamed ‘gassy’ because he liked to talk!

Gastown’s steam clock may look old, but it was only built in 1977. It also has its own twitter @gastwnsteamclck.

The original Gastown was ruined in 1886 by the Great Vancouver Fire.

Gastown is a major transportation hub with two skytrain stations and  seabus and cruise ship terminals.

Vancouver has set itself a deadline to become the greenest city in the world by 2020.

41% of Vancouver residents walk or cycle around the city.

“I had the privilege of working with the Welocalize LocLeaders Advisory Committee to

create the agenda for LocLeaders Forum Vancouver. Collectively, the LocLeaders Advisory Committee members had over 50 years of localization experience and manage over $20 million of localization spend. Each of their program team size ranges from less than five to more than 15 team members. Surprisingly, we quickly came to consensus about the common denominators required for scaling up: organization, technology and risk management.

It became apparent that despite company size, each member of the LocLeaders Advisory Committee expressed similar priorities to enabling the right people with the right tools to manage increasing complexity. From there, we began building key questions around the three common denominators, which naturally led to the three panel discussions.”

“At LocLeaders Vancouver, it was great to hear more about how our clients are further aligning their localization strategy to corporate and end-user objectives. The localization teams within our client organizations are really driving improvements in end-user experience through localization.

By raising awareness and evangelizing about localization and globalization, as an enabler rather than a cost, all key stakeholders within the organization will buy-in to the benefits, financial and otherwise, of a multilingual global content strategy.”

“ T h e L o c L e a d e r s e v e n t i n Vancouver is a great forum for localization professionals to share best practices and experiences. At LocLeaders in Vancouver, I enjoyed learning more from my fellow industry colleagues about their current organizations, key roles within those teams and future areas of focus for growth. I’m looking forward to next year’s event!”

Nancy Anderson Senior Director of Globalization

“Business process should be designed with potential failure and risks under control. We need to ensure our processes follow the data protection regulation and also have a fall back plan if one point in the workflow breaks. The LocLeaders Forum is a good place to contribute to future improvements of the localization industry.” READ MORE

MITIGATING RISK IN YOUR LOCALIZATION STRATEGY

We looked at situations that called for redundant systems and we looked at a few examples of risk mitigation carried too far. After all, we’re talking about risk mitigation, not risk elimination, which may fix one problem but can cause a whole new bunch of risks that then need mitigating! READ MORE

“The question of whether and to what extent technology can help enterprises scale up their global operations is of utmost importance for small and large companies alike. Selecting and i m p l e m e n t i n g t h e r i g h t technology solutions to match strategic goals is crucial.

The solutions necessary for the companies’ global success are div ided into two dist inct categories:

1. The language and translation technology that automates the ways natura l language is handled.

2. The business process and infrastructure optimization tools that he lp reduce pro ject management effort and costs.”

TALENTMANAGEMENT

SERGIO PELINO LOCALIZATION OPERATIONS MANAGER GOOGLE

“In today's landscape of Language Service Providers (LSPs), it

is not easy to rank one above the others for their technology capabilities. Although it is great

to interface with an LSP who quickly understands your technical needs, sophisticated technology is becoming

available across most LSP offerings, or the larger buyers have already built platforms in-house or purchased SaaS from a

technology provider. So what are the most valuable differentiators for LSPs today? Is it their technology capability or their people? At the end of our sophisticated localization machinery, there is always a human translator.

How can LSPs maximize the marketing value of their people asset? Are buyers still looking for nameless faceless crowds? [At LocLeaders] I was delighted to see Welocalize put emphasis on Talent Management as an important pillar of their offerings. I

believe that access to a persistent large and specialized pool of translators who are motivated and engaged with the

buyer's brand and the guarantee to always be able to assign the right job to the right individuals at large

scale, match.com style, can be one of the most competitive assets.”

Localization Maturity Model in Practice

From the Deep

“From Deep in the Trenches: LMM in Practice” detailed a number of localization challenges and successes that Avigilon had experienced, from managing multiple vendor changes to introducing a terminology process. In this blog, Paula summarizes some of the key points from her presentation and also draws on some of the discussions that took place at the Welocalize LocLeaders Forum 2014 in Vancouver. Paula also participated in the LocLeaders event as a key panelist for the discussion, “Does Technology Impact Scale?” READ MORE

“I moderated the first panel session of the day, Building and Scaling Your Localization Team. The panelists included Prakash Menon from John Deere, Johan Eriksson from National Instruments and Nancy Anderson from EMC. One the liveliest discussions centered on EMC and Nancy Anderson's experience in creating ‘Geo-Champions.’ Even organizations with a mature localization program, like EMC, face scalability issues. The role of these Geo-Champions extends beyond linguistic expertise. These individuals proactively educate and collaborate with other cross functions in-country to deflect resistance to simply get work done.

Another key takeaway from this discussion was the evolving skill set of successful localization team members. Because of the complexity in today's localization requirements, the ability to articulate business objectives to a broad [internal] audience of marketers, engineers, customer service and procurement, as well as create consensus and drive action, are critical to the success an organization's global performance.”
