The first permanent settler in the regionwas Armstead Runyon, who built ahomestead on the north side of townalong Fiddyment Creek in 1830. Thissettlement grew to be calledRunyonstown. Colonel William B. Archerand an assistant laid out the village plana year after Runyonstown came intobeing. In 1836, enterprisingrepresentatives from the Illinois andMichigan Canal Commissionestablished a headquarters for theconstruction of the new Illinois &Michigan Canal. This building is now theIllinois & Michigan Canal Museum at 803S. State Street. This National HistoricLandmark functioned as canalheadquarters following its construction in1837, and an 1876 Victorian additionserved as a residence for the canalsuperintendent. Residents at theheadquarters witnessed more than 10million tons of commercial goods thatflowed through the canal during its 62 yearsof operation. The building’s reputation wassuch that it was second in importanceonly to the Illinois State Capitol.
Upon the canal’s completion andsubsequent opening on April 16, 1848,business and industry throughout theregion boomed. Settlers and traders tothe Midwest came by way of the ErieCanal, the Great Lakes and the Illinois &Michigan Canal, which was the firstnavigable link to the Mississippi River.Commerce at Lockport made it abustling, vigorous town. Dozens offlourmills, grain warehouses, lake boats, stone barges, boatyards and canaloffices wereconstructed alongthe canal.
On February 12,1853, a special actof state legislatureapproved theincorporation of thevillage of Lockport. The first board oftrustees was soon elected, and the townbegan to grow at a steady pace.Lockport was eventually incorporated as a city in 1904.
