EPISODE 101 - "PAUL"

ACT ONE

FADE IN:

1 INT. JANITOR’S CLOSET - 7:45 A.M.

7:45

A large, black BOX is on the floor of the closet. Colored

WIRES sprawl out of the box. A set of HANDS connects

various wires.

7:46

The final wires are connected, and a small TIMER in the

center of the box flips on. It reads: 8:45.

We ZOOM OUT to reveal the hands’ owner, a fifteen-year-old

high school student named PAUL: medium height, with a medium

build and medium-length hair. He is dressed in cargo pants

and a gray jacket.

PAUL

(quietly)

8:45.

He STANDS from where he was kneeling and OPENS the door.

2 INT. WEST HALLWAY - CONT.

7:47

Paul STEPS OUT of the closet and SHUTS the door. We trail

him as he WALKS east through the hallway. Many people are

walking through the hallway or stopped at a locker, but it

is not particularly crowded yet.

7:48

He passes by a group of FOOTBALL PLAYERS (ep. 104). They

SNICKER at him. Paul does not turn and continues to WALK.

He passes a DOOR with PIANO MUSIC coming from it (ep.

103). The music suddenly STOPS. Paul continues to WALK.

7:49

Page 3: Lockdown 101-104

CONTINUED: (2) 2.

He now passes by a group of CHEERLEADERS (ep. 106). One

cheerleader WHISPERS something as Paul passes, and they

GIGGLE meanly at him. Another adds something and they

GIGGLE louder.

Paul approaches a BATHROOM and enters.

3 INT. WEST BOY’S BATHROOM - CONT.

7:50

The bathroom is empty. Paul approaches a URINAL and begins

to USE it.

As people pass the bathroom door off-screen, isolated

SNIPPETS of CONVERSATION can be heard.

A BOY in a football uniform enters the bathroom (ep.

104). This is MATT: very tall, handsome, and of medium

build.

7:51

Matt begins to remove his UNIFORM.

Paul finishes and ZIPS his pants. He turns around to the

SINK and begins to wash his hands. He uses SOAP.

At first, he slowly RUBS his hands together. He begins to

go faster. Soon, he’s using an incredible amount of FORCE.

MATT

Jesus, calm down!

7:52

At this point, Matt has removed his uniform and is PULLING

on a SWEATSHIRT.

Paul SHUTS the water OFF and EXITS the bathroom without

saying a word or drying his hands.

4 INT. WEST HALLWAY - CONT.

7:53

As he STEPS out of the bathroom, a GIRL passes by, heading

east (ep. 103). This is KARA: short, cute, and somewhat

heavy (with large breasts). She STOPS at a DRINKING

FOUNTAIN across the hall. She BENDS over and DRINKS.

(CONTINUED)

Page 4: Lockdown 101-104

CONTINUED: (2) 3.

Paul stays in the bathroom’s entryway, STARING at Kara (and

her butt).

From behind him, Matt EXITS the bathroom and PUSHES past

Paul to get out. Matt walks to the middle of the hall,

where a CHEERLEADER stands WAITING (ep. 106). This is

AMANDA: medium height and skinny, with long blonde

hair. Matt WRAPS his arm around her and they begin to walk

east.

MATT

(now distant)

Waiting long?

7:54

Kara is done drinking, and she STRAIGHTENS herself and

begins to WALK east. A few seconds later, Paul too begins

WALKING east.

Paul passes the GYM (ep. 104, 105, 108). Inside, the

BASKETBALL TEAM is practicing.

5 INT. EAST HALLWAY - CONT.

7:55

Paul continues to WALK. Paul is walking slightly FASTER

than Kara, who is on the other side of the hall still. The

distance between them lessens.

7:56

Paul continues to WALK, passing Kara. Ahead of him, Matt

and Amanda enter a CLASSROOM (ep. 104, 106).

Paul passes the LIBRARY (ep. 102, 103, 107) and another BOY

(Sid, ep. 107).

7:57

Paul passes another set of BATHROOMS (ep. 107). He passes

the open DOORS leading to the CAFETERIA (ep. 103, 108).

6 INT. ENTRANCE FOYER - CONT.

7:58

Paul passes the shut double DOORS leading to the

brightly-lit and crowded SCHOOL OFFICE (ep. 102, 105, 108).

Page 5: Lockdown 101-104

4.

He makes his way to another set of DOORS, leading

outside. He OPENS one and walks out.

7 EXT. PATH - CONT.

7:59

Paul WALKS down the PATH leading away from the school. In

the distance, a BOY is walking quickly from the PARKING LOT

toward Paul and the school (ep. 102). This is AUSTIN: tall

and lanky, with hair in his eyes and a brightly colored

t-shirt and jeans. He gets nearer.

8:00

The school BELL RINGS. Austin SPEEDS UP, now late. Paul

continues walking to the parking lot and street. They PASS.

From behind him, we hear Austin TALK.

AUSTIN (O.S.)

Hey, Emily.

EMILY (O.S.)

(friendly)

Hi. Better hurry, or you’ll be

late.

8:01

AUSTIN (O.S.)

Yeah, I know. See you soon.

EMILY (O.S.)

You will, I promise.

Throughout this CONVERSATION, Paul has continued walking

away from the speakers and the school. We have still been

TRAILING him.

Emily (ep. 108) RUNS to catch up with Paul. We see her for

the first time. She’s fairly tall, skinny, and stunningly

beautiful.

EMILY

Hey, Paul.

PAUL

Hello.

Page 6: Lockdown 101-104

CONTINUED: (2) 5.

EMILY

You ready for this?

8:02

We STOP moving, but Emily and Paul continue to WALK to the

street. Either Paul doesn’t answer, or we can no longer

hear him.

END OF ACT ONE.

ACT TWO

FADE IN:

8 INT. PAUL’S HOUSE - 8:11 A.M.

8:11

The front door OPENS and Paul and Emily ENTER the house.

EMILY

I need to use the bathroom for a

second.

Emily CLIMBS a nearby STAIRCASE. Paul heads into the

KITCHEN.

9 INT. KITCHEN - CONT.

8:12

Paul opens the FRIDGE and removes a CHEESE STICK. He

UNWRAPS it, drops the WRAPPER on the floor, and begins to

EAT.

8:13

Paul STANDS in the kitchen as he eats his cheese

stick. Once he has eaten it all, he FILLS a CUP with water

from the SINK. He DRINKS it and sets it on the COUNTER.

Paul EXITS the kitchen.

10 INT. STAIRCASE - CONT.

8:14

Paul CLIMBS the staircase slowly. He STARES briefly at a

framed PHOTO of his family. He reaches the top step.

Page 7: Lockdown 101-104

6.

11 INT. UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - CONT.

Paul steps off the STAIRCASE and enters a door.

12 INT. PAUL’S BEDROOM - CONT.

8:15

Paul enters. His bedroom is sparse, with empty walls and

little FURNITURE. Paul SITS on his BED and WAITS quietly.

8:16

Emily enters and SITS beside Paul, STARING at him. Paul

TURNS his head and STARES into Emily. They STARE.

8:17

Paul BREAKS his gaze, reaching under his bed. His arms come

out with three GUNS: a RIFLE, a SHOTGUN, and a HANDGUN.

PAUL

I’ve got the guns.

Emily TOUCHES them carefully. Paul HANDS her the RIFLE.

EMILY

They’re loaded?

PAUL

Yeah. I checked this morning.

Emily NODS, considering.

EMILY

Do you want to take the rifle? I’m

no good with them.

8:18

Paul and Emily SWITCH guns. Paul has the RIFLE; Emily has

the SHOTGUN and HANDGUN. Emily STANDS.

EMILY (cont’d)

All right. Let’s do this.

this time walking AWAY from the school.

8:28

Austin gets nearer.

AUSTIN

What are you two doing?

They all continue to WALK towards each other. Paul LIFTS his

rifle.

AUSTIN (cont’d)

Emily, what’s going on? Emily?

A SHOT rings out. Austin DROPS, instantly dead.

Paul LOWERS his rifle. He and Emily walk AROUND the dead

body and continue toward the school.

8:29

They APPROACH the doors. A WOMAN walks quickly out of the

school, holding PAPERS. SHe’s looking down, like she’s in a

hurry to get somewhere.

Paul and Emily both SHOOT. Papers fall to the ground. The

woman DIES instantly.

Paul and Emily enter the school.

14 INT. ENTRANCE FOYER - CONT.

8:30

Only a few STUDENTS are MILLING about. No one has heard the

gunshots yet. Paul and Emily SHOOT them.

One student begins to SCREAM for a second before the scream

EMILY

Good luck.

Emily HEADS off into the office. Paul WATCHES her go.

15 INT. EAST HALLWAY - CONT.

8:31

Paul then begins to WALK WEST down the same path he took

early in the episode. Only two STUDENTS are in the hallway;

three SHOTS kill them.

8:32

Paul continues WALKING west while an announcement comes on.

PRINCIPAL (O.S.)

Teachers, lock your doors. There

is a shooter in the building. This

is not a drill.

No impact is visible in Paul. He continues to WALK,

entering the GYM.

16 INT. GYM - CONT.

8:33

There is only a JANITOR in the gym. He sees Paul.

JANITOR

Wait, kid -

A SHOT; the janitor DROPS DEAD.

Paul HEADS to the weight room door.

17 INT. WEIGHT ROOM - CONT.

The weight room is completely EMPTY of people. Paul walks

across the room and EXITS through a DOOR on the other side.

Page 10: Lockdown 101-104

9.

18 INT. WEST HALLWAY - CONT.

8:34

The LIGHTS in a classroom nearby go OFF. Paul tries the

DOOR. It’s locked. He SHOOTS the door. It still won’t

open.

He begins to JOG west.

8:35

In the distance, there is a GIRL running away from

Paul. Paul begins to SHOOT. Loud, piercing SCREAMS come

from the girl. After six shots, the girl finally

DROPS. Her corpse is still in the distance.

8:36

Nearby, a girl RUNS out of the west boy’s bathroom. It’s

Amanda, the cheerleader. She immediately sees Paul and

begins to RUN AWAY, terrified.

Paul LIFTS his rifle and SHOOTS. Amanda DROPS.

8:37

Paul WALKS up to her body. Her leg is GUSHING BLOOD, but

she’s still BLINKING and BREATHING hard.

AMANDA

(gasping)

Stop...don’t...

PAUL

What?

AMANDA

Don’t...shoot...please.

PAUL

What’s my name?

AMANDA

...What?

8:38

We ZOOM out to reveal Matt approaching Paul from

BEHIND. Paul suddenly spins around and SHOOTS. Matt DROPS

DEAD.

Amanda’s SOBS grow LOUDER. Paul checks his WRISTWATCH. He

TURNS and begins to RUN back east.

8:39

The halls are absolutely EMPTY, except for the couple DEAD

BODIES scattered in the halls. All of the classrooms are

DARK inside. In the distance, GUNSHOTS are heard.

Paul SPEEDS up. He RUNS through the CAFETERIA doors.

19 INT. CAFETERIA - CONT.

8:40

Paul RUNS into the cafeteria, where Emily is finishing up

SHOOTING members of the band. INSTRUMENTS are strewn about

the room. The very few remaining STUDENTS in the cafeteria

are HIDING under the TABLES.

All is SILENT.

PAUL

Emily?

Emily SPINS around, frightened by the sudden voice. Without

thinking, she SHOOTS Paul. Paul DROPS to the ground, HURT.

Emily is horrified. She DASHES to Paul.

EMILY

Oh my god! Oh my god!

8:41

Paul begins to BLEED from the gunshot WOUND in his SIDE.

PAUL

Damn.

Paul looks up, into Emily’s EYES, which STARE

sympathetically at him from above.

EMILY

I am so sorry, Paul.

Emily RAISES her shotgun. She SHOOTS.

CUT TO BLACK

Over the DARKNESS, we hear one FINAL BREATH.

Einaudi. SHEET MUSIC is in front of her.

Her hands FLY across the KEYS; she LEANS in and out as the

notes CRESCENDO and DECRESCENDO dramatically.

7:46

Kara is short, cute, and only somewhat heavy. At the

moment, she is CONCENTRATING on her playing.

The MELODY is beautiful; the BASELINE is powerful; the

DYNAMICS shape the music perfectly.

7:47

Through a little WINDOW on the DOOR to the room, Emily

appears. She gives a THUMBS UP and SMILES. Kara notices,

and without stopping the music, she SMILES back.

7:48

The song suddenly DIVES lower and the baseline dominates

with powerful REPETITION. The music is TENSE. We are

building up to something...

As the song CLIMAXES, a CELLPHONE begins to RING. The music

HALTS immediately and Kara reaches for her cellphone.

FOUNTAIN. She BENDS over and DRINKS.

Across the hall, Paul stands in the bathroom’s entryway,

STARING at Kara.

Matt EXITS the bathroom and PUSHES past Paul to get

out. Matt walks to the middle of the hall, WRAPS his arm

around Amanda, and begins to walk east.

MATT

(now distant)

Waiting long?

7:54

Kara is done drinking, and she STRAIGHTENS herself and

begins to WALK east, following Matt and Amanda.

She passes the GYM. Inside, the BASKETBALL TEAM is

practicing.

Kara continues to WALK. In front of Matt and Amanda walks

Sid, with a gigantic BACKPACK.

Paul PASSES Kara from behind her. Ahead of him, Matt and

Amanda enter a CLASSROOM (ep. 104, 106).

Kara passes the LIBRARY (ep. 102, 103, 107).

7:57

In front of here, Paul PASSES Sid. Sid is now directly in

front of Kara. Sid’s backpack suddenly BURSTS open. PAPERS

and BOOKS fall to the floor.

7:58

Kara continues to WALK east, approaching Sid. He is

KNEELING on the ground, COLLECTING the fallen papers and

STUFFING them into his backpack.

Before Kara reaches Sid, she TURNS into a CLASSROOM.

A TEACHER is standing at the front of the room. He writes

on the blackboard: "Today period 1 is 8:00 to 8:45."

Kara HEADS to her DESK, near the FRONT of the

classroom. She REMOVES her backpack and SITS.

8:00

The school BELL RINGS. Students immediately begin to find

their seats. The talking begins to QUIET.

Sid RUNS into the classroom, flustered. His backpack is

OPEN and he is CLUTCHING a pile of loose papers.

TEACHER

Please sit down, Sid.

SID

Sorry...

Sid finds his seat.

TEACHER

We’ll be in the library today. If

we could all stand up and quietly

make our way together...

The students begin to TALK, quickly overshadowing the

teacher’s voice. Kara and other students STAND and begin to

WALK toward the door.

KARA

Yeah, sure.

Kara STANDS and WALKS quickly out of the

Kara LEANS over and lightly KISSES Austin’s CHEEK.

Kara passes another set of BATHROOMS. She then TURNS into

the open DOORS leading to the CAFETERIA

45 INT. CAFETERIA - CONT.

8:14

Kara ENTERS the cafeteria. The BAND is practicing, and the

there is a CONDUCTOR in front of them.

The MUSIC is painfully disharmonious. The conductor WAVES

his hands in a "stop" GESTURE. The band slowly comes to a

HALT. A TUBA continues to play briefly, but the sound DIES

OUT as its PLAYER realizes everyone else has stopped.

The conductor sees Kara, who has been WATCHING near the

entrance.

8:15

CONDUCTOR

Kara! Thank god -- would you mind

leading the woodwinds? We’re dying

here without Emily.

KARA

Uh, I have class...

CONDUCTOR

I’ll tell your teacher where you

were. He won’t be too happy, but I

can deal with it.

Okay, cool.

FADE IN:

46 INT. CAFETERIA - 8:32 A.M.

The band is PLAYING a marching tune when the announcement

comes over the intercom. They STOP their playing to listen.

PRINCIPAL (O.S.)

Teachers, lock your doors. There

is a shooter in the building. This

is not a drill.

CHAOS ensues.

The sounds of panic are DEAFENING. Instruments are THROWN

to the ground in the instant STRUGGLE to escape.

8:33

The conductor runs to the DOORS, trying to SHUT them. They

won’t budge. He RETURNS to the STAND amid the chaos.

CONDUCTOR

Everyone, calm down, please!

No one hears. The chaos continues. Only Kara is still, her

face covered in SHOCK.

CONDUCTOR (cont’d)

Stop!!

The band begins to QUIET. Gradually, all talking CEASES.

CONDUCTOR (cont’d)

Silence.

Silence. By now, everyone is under a table.

8:35

The band members, the conductor, and Kara continue to hide

under their tables. Occasionally, a loud SHUSHING NOISE or

a brief SQUEAL of terror can be heard. Mostly, though,

there is a tense SILENCE.

Kara is terrified.

8:36

Kara’s EYES -- along with those of the rest of the band --

follow the conductor as he cautiously STANDS from underneath

the table he was under. He moves QUIETLY to the door.

TENSE SILENCE. He tries again to SHUT the door. It doesn’t

give. He PUSHES harder. It still won’t close.

8:37

He SLAMS his body into the door. With a frighteningly loud

CREAK, it BUDGES only an inch. The doors are still wide

open, and the quiet has been broken. For a moment, no one

moves. No one breathes.

After a moment, the conductor begins to CREEP back to his

table.

8:38

The conductor is once again under his table. Silence

continues.

Under her table, Kara begins to TIE HER SHOES.

8:39

Kara is almost done tying her shoes when she sees FEET enter

through the door. They are EMILY’S, but Kara is unaware of

their owner. There is absolute and dead SILENCE, except for

the pounding FOOTSTEPS. The feet draw nearer and nearer.

8:40

BANG. BANG. Suddenly, GUNSHOTS begin to ring out. A few

people SCREAM. A group of three band members tries to RUN

for the door. BANG. BANG. BANG.

The gunshots continue. It’s not yet chaos, but it’s on the

edge of becoming it. The tenseness has been replaced by

total FEAR and senseless VIOLENCE.

PAUL RUNS into the cafeteria.

PAUL

She SHOOTS.

Absolute SILENCE.

8:42

Kara is hiding under her table amid countless fallen

corpses. She is TREMBLING. Her FISTS are CLENCHED. A TEAR

begins to fall down her CHEEK.

Suddenly, Emily’s FACE is directly in front of Kara. Emily

is PEEKING under the table. Her SHOTGUN is pointed.

BANG. Emily SHOOTS; a girl beside her falls DEAD to the

ground. Emily SMILES as Kara (with evil? malice? perhaps

even with the look of a shared inside joke?). Her head

DISAPPEARS over the edge of the table.

8:43

Emily SITS at the table above Kara. Her FEET dangle near

Kara’s FACE. It sounds like she is EATING something, but

Kara cannot see.

away from Emily’s gaze. After she manages to get a few feet

out into the open floor, she PEERS back at Emily.

8:44

Emily is still looking away. Cautiously, Kara STANDS. She

begins to TIPTOE to the doors. She PEERS back.

Still safe. She SPEEDS up, walking at full speed now. She

makes it to the door.

Kara BREAKS through the school DOORS.

The sound of a WHISTLE pierces the air. Several high school

BOYS wearing FOOTBALL UNIFORMS are crouched down, flanking

the line of SCRIMMAGE and STARING at the players opposite

them. In the center is the quarterback -- MATT -- very

tall, handsome, and of medium build.

MATT

Red 21... Hike!

The CENTER snaps the FOOTBALL, Matt CATCHES it, and the play

begins.

7:46

After a moment of WAITING for the WIDE RECEIVER, Matt THROWS

the ball to him. The receiver is TACKLED before he can

catch it. The COACH blows the WHISTLE again.

COACH

Okay, class starts in less than

fifteen minutes! We’ll practice

more after school!

The players begin to CONGREGATE and TALK.

7:47

They all begin to head for the back entrance of the

Thanks. Yours’s not bad either.

PAUL steps out of a nearby CLOSET door.

Paul passes the group of football players. They SNICKER at

The conversation returns, but Matt is not paying attention.

Matt interrupts the conversation.

Paul finishes and ZIPS his pants. He turns around to the

SINK and begins to wash his hands. He uses SOAP.

At first, he slowly RUBS his hands together. He begins to

go faster. Soon, he’s using an incredible amount of FORCE.

MATT

Jesus, calm down!

At this point, Matt has removed his uniform and is PULLING

Paul SHUTS the water OFF and EXITS the bathroom without

saying a word or drying his hands.

Matt finishes getting dressed and LEAVES the room.

AMANDA

Probably.

MATT

Cool, yeah, we should go. Should I
