MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Ramon RodriguezVice President of Fifth Third Bank
freestorefoodbank.org
Dear Friends,
I am humbled and honored to serve as the Board Chair of the Freestore Foodbank Board of Directors. In heart, mind and deed, I am a volunteer. My hope is that each of you
that come in contact with our organization will become an active member of the Freestore Foodbank family. Please consider volunteering with your company or friends to pack Power Packs or Senior Boxes, help us with Holiday Food Distribution, participate in one of our many special events, become a donor, make a connection to resources, hire a Cincinnati Cooks or Lift the TriState workforce development graduate or help us advocate on behalf of over 80,000 tristate children that may not know where they will find their next meal.
It is with great pride and amazement to understand what 135 Freestore Foodbank team members manage to pull o in a year. Over 33 million meals were provided to those in our community that struggle with hunger. Nearly 93,000 individuals were assisted at our Customer Connection Center on Liberty Street. We ensured 6,507 children had food to eat over the weekend. Over 125,000 folks were helped monthly via our network of community partners. With our partners we distributed 8.4 million pounds of healthy, nutritious produce. None of this is possible without 13,287 volunteers that provided 96,886 hours of their time and their energy.
The numbers are impressive. Let me simplify it a little. At Freestore Foodbank we can turn one dollar into three meals. Imagine for a moment that one of those meals helps a child somewhere in our hometown ace a test in school. Now that child is dreaming of all they can be. Perhaps that child goes onto becoming a teacher, a doctor, a chef or a distribution center manager and putting a dinner on the table is no longer a worry.
With gratitude,
Ramon Rodriguez(Board Chair)

Hunger negatively aects a child’s ability to learn, grow and thrive, damaging their long-term health and educational outcomes. Unfortunately, over 80,000 children in our region may not know where to find their next meal. From birth
Freestore Foodbank can only provide nutritious food, connection to supportive services and pathways from crisis to stability with the support of our tristate community. We rely on grants and donations to support our programs and services, which feed the line of neighbors needing food while shortening that line by oering holistic wrap-around services and workforce development. On behalf of the families we serve, Freestore Foodbank humbly thanks the following foundations and organizations which provided essential support between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.
Unrestricted contributions and donations not designated to a particular program, are applied where there is the greatest need to fulfill our mission. Critical unrestricted grants came from the Allstate Insurance Company, Linneman Family Foundation, Meshewa Farm Foundation and United Way of Greater Cincinnati.
through graduation, Freestore Foodbank and our network of partner schools, pediatric clinics and childcare sites work to provide the critical nutrition children need to develop and succeed.
Freestore Foodbank’s largest anti-childhood-hunger initiative is our Power Pack program. Every Friday of the school year, 5,200 children receive food to prevent hunger over the weekend when school meals are unavailable. over

Over 260,000 people in our tristate region face hunger. Unfortunately, as food-insecurity increases, consumption of fresh produce decreases significantly. Fresh fruit and vegetables are expensive, and in geographically inaccessible for some communities, leading to negative health outcomes for adults, senior citizens and children. Freestore Foodbank is committed to providing more fresh produce to the community. Our community farm, the Giving Fields, delivered healthy vegetables to food pantries in Northern Kentucky with help from the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation, L&L Nippert Charitable Foundation, and Corteva Agriscience™ Agriculture Division of DowDuPont™, as well as thousands of volunteers. For families who are financially able to purchase produce but unable to do so because they reside in a food desert, Healthy Harvest Mobile Market, presented by Tri-Health, brings at-cost fresh produce and meal-completing packaged items to nine Cincinnati neighborhoods.
Generous grants from the H.B., E.W. and F.R. Luther Charitable Foundation, Fifth Third Bank and Narley L. Haley, Co-Trustees, R.C. Durr Foundation, Darden Foundation (Feeding America), Nutrien and Ameriprise brought fresh fruit and vegetables to food pantries, schools, clinics and other community sites.
Support from the Ohio Association of Foodbanks, Manuel D. & Rhoda Mayerson Foundation and the Hunger Walk allowed Freestore Foodbank to help some of our 500 partner food pantries, soup kitchens, schools and social service organizations improve their capacity to distribute produce and other healthy foods. Contributions from Schwan’s Corporate Giving Foundation (Feeding America), Louise Taft Semple Foundation, and SC Ministry Founda-tion improved access to healthy foods at our Liberty Street Market and through a refrigeration expansion project at Freestore Foodbank’s Bond Hill distribution center.

CONNECTION TO SUPPORTIVE SERVICES
Hunger is only one symptom of the larger problem of poverty. Through 48 years serving the tristate, Freestore Foodbank understands that providing emergency food oers only temporary relief. To address the underlying issue of poverty, we oer holistic, wrap-around support to help families
gain self-reliance at our Over-the-Rhine Customer Connection Center. This critical community resource is supported in part by grants from the City of Cincinnati Human Services Fund, Rosenthal Family Foundation, Walmart Foundation (Feeding America), Sutphin Family Foundation, Apartment Association Outreach, Inc., Harold C. Schott Foundation, Thomas J. Emery Memorial of Greater Cincinnati Foundation, and Wohlgemuth Herschede Foundation.
Food benefits like SNAP cannot be used to purchase necessities such as toilet paper, soap, diapers and feminine products, so families with limited resources may be forced to choose between paying bills and purchasing these critical items. Support from the P&G Fund of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation helps Freestore Foodbank oer essential health and hygiene items for local families.
These items not only ensure our neighbors in need have the opportunity to feel comfortable, but hygiene items are critical to building well-being and a foundation to thrive.
To connect our neighbors in need with stability-building services, give now at freestorefoodbank.org/donate/
Most of the individuals we see at our Customer Connection Center struggle to find full-time employment. Barriers to employment include a lack of education or training, previous incarceration, or challenges with transportation and
PATHWAYS FROM CRISIS TO STABILITY
housing. Freestore Foodbank oers two workforce development programs, Cincinnati COOKS! and LIFT the TriState, that provide essential job training in the high-demand fields of food service and logistics.
What sets our courses apart from other organizations’ oerings is our free training and crucial wrap-around services. In addition, we accept returning citizens and do not require a specific level of stability before acceptance to the program. Instead we work with applicants to improve their stability. Our programs remain the only ones in our region open to individuals of all backgrounds with a focus on formal training and links to accredited institutions rather than only on-the-job training.
LIFT the TriState started in 2018 to explore a new opportunity: leveraging our warehousing and logistics experience to help individuals train for careers in that growing field. With 81 graduates since then, we have already made more classes and slots available to meet the need. LIFT participants have been supported by the Farmer Family Foundation and Bank of America Foundation with program start-up funding provided by The McCaw Family Fund/BelFlex Stang Network.
The success of Cincinnati COOKS!, with over 1,700 graduates to date, is made possible in part by grants from the City of Cincinnati’s Hand Up Initiative, Rosenthal Family Foundation, Hearst Foundations, Landen Family Foundation, HDR Foundation, Harold C. Schott Foundation, Mary Hromish Foundation, General Mills Foundation Hometown Grantmaking Program, American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation, U.S. Bank Foundation, and Ladislas and Vilma Segoe Family Foundation.
