We welcome topical ideas to enhance your educational endeavors. Contact jfl[email protected]. Explore, engage, experience… Maybe you’ve been lucky enough to enjoy that kind of summer with your family! Just because the new school year has begun doesn’t mean that you can’t continue the adventure. In fact, PPLD encourages you to adventure into the Educational Resource Center (ERC) at East Library, where you can expect the unexpected the moment you come through the door. Here you will find hands- on kits, projects, activities, games, and educational classes to engage the curiosity of your children ages 18 months – high school, nourishing interests and expanding knowledge, while supplementing and enhancing your child’s education. The ERC houses a large collection of items covering all curriculum areas: Science (STEM) and mathematics, phonics/language arts, fine arts, creative arts and play, history, social studies, and foreign language. The collection is available for independent exploration and also provides great teaching tools. You’ll find a variety of playful manipulatives for younger children; games, activities and models (including a life-size skeleton model), math concept and STEM engineering kits for upper elementary students; and for the middle grades –high school, STEM kits exploring circuitry, physics and engineering, as well as student lab-grade microscopes to be used with our commercial or your handmade slides. We also offer computers with educational games, virtual dissection, and an introduction-to-driving program for our older patrons. And all of our resources are being continually updated! In addition to our resource collection, we offer exceptional programming for students 7 - 14, with Make-a- Masterpiece and STEAM sessions two Wednesdays and two Fridays a month. The Masterpiece program explores the work of old and new favorite artists, with budding artists producing an inspired masterpiece of their own. Our changing STEAM programs focus primarily on science, technology and engineering topics, encouraging children to think, discover, and come together as a team in a small group setting. These popular programs require pre-registration! Drop-in Idea Labs are offered two Mondays a month, 3 - 6 p.m. To receive monthly updated information on all programs just visit https://ppld.org/homeschool-hub/newsletters and check the “Educational Resource Center” box. Plan to stop by and spend some time throughout the school year taking advantage of all the ERC has to offer. Consider checking out items for up to two hours, using them with just your family in one of the library’s study rooms. Or reserve a Wednesday morning to become familiar with a science topic through hands-on discovery using our higher-level kits. Kids Activity: Making Slime In addition to being fun to mix and manipulate, this cool concoction makes a great jumping off point for introducing chemistry concepts such as states of matter, viscosity, polymers, and non-Newtonian fluids. Are there any budding authors in your family? PPLD offers two online writing programs for kids, which allow them to create an electronic book, complete with Title, Text and Graphics! Visit the updated PPLD Kids page by going to PPLD. org and selecting PPLD Kids. You should see colorful button choices in a variety of topics Select Create, and then Write to see the Storybird and Storyjumper programs. Use your library card to set up an account, then the writing and editing begins! Add text, graphics, edit pages, use premade fillable templates (MY ABC Book) and even upload your own photos into the type of book you choose; picture, chapter, etc. Something young storytellers will enjoy is the ability to record a voice for sound effects, or story narration. The possibilities are endless and seeing their own words in print can be a great motivator to write even more! Biography in ContextAre you researching a notable public figure? Check out our Biography in Context database. Accessed through our research tab either from our homepage or through the PPLD Kids page (Homework Help, Biographies); Biography in Context offers biographies of public figures, both historical and present day. You will need your library card number and pin to sign in. Once you have reached Biography in Context, start typing in the name of the person in the search box. You do not have to type the entire name before searching. Suggested people and their photos will scroll across the top. As you scroll down, you will encounter an alphabetical list of possible names along with occupation, birth year, and death year to help you narrow down your person. After you click on your person, an Everything page pops up. You can access Academic Journals, Biographies, Images, and much more. Clicking on Biographies, you are able to click on titles that are of interest to you. Once you find a good article, you will see a Tools area to the right. Click on the Citation tab to view a citation for the

work. You will need to check the citation against your needed format for accuracy, but you will have a great starting point. The email tab allows you to send yourself (or anyone else) the biography. The download tab lets you save the article to your computer. You can also save the article to your OneDrive or google drive. Biography in Context is just one of the amazing resources that Pikes Peak Library District has available for you to use. Check it (and all of our other amazing resources) out today. They are all free with your library card.

great new books for homeschoolers

I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark by Debbie Levy (2016)This is one of the most positive picture book biographies I have read in months! Her story makes you want to stand up and cheer. Ruth had many obstacles to overcome, and she worked hard, and went on to become a great lawyer, and is now on the Supreme Court, where she frequently dissents.Ages 4 - 10; picture book biography

Becoming Bach by Tom Leonard (2017)The illustrations are beautiful; the text is Bach’s story, told as if he was a child about how important music was to his family, and how he discovered music and how it works. The author/illustrator adds more biographical information at the end of the book, and his own personal notes about Bach.Ages 4 - 10; picture book biography

Nadia: the Girl Who Couldn’t Sit Still by Karlin Gray (2015)I love reading about people who were markedly different/wild/marching to their own drummer when they were children. Nadia Comaneci was just such a girl. She was trained as a gymnast, and threw herself into becoming a remarkable gymnast. In 1976 she earned perfect ‘ten’ scores at the Montreal Olympics. The scoreboards were not set up to give anyone a ten, so her scores came up as 1.0 – a terrible score. This had to be explained, several more times that day. Nadia later defected and now lives in Oklahoma.

Ages 4 - 10; picture book biography

Baby Monkey, Private Eye by Brian Selznick (2018)This is a book to hunt down and read. Just published, it is almost 200 pages long. The text is simple, the font is large, and sentences are repeated several times through the story. There are clues to the cases in the illustrations, and the book is mostly illustrations. This unique book goes on to demonstrate parts of a book to new readers, with an invented bibliography, and an index! Independent readers will have no trouble with this long, long book.Ages 5 - 10; visual literacy, Juvenile Fiction
