IntroductionThe New York Medical College (NYMC) Graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences (GSBMS) Biomedical Science and Management (BSM) Program combines the advanced training of a master of science degree with professional skills courses and an internship experience to develop scientists with business acumen for a successful professional career in academia or industry.

The BSM Program is a separate academic track within each of our discipline-based basic medical science master’s programs:

• Biochemistry and Molecular Biology• Cell Biology • Microbiology and Immunology• Pharmacology• Pathology• Physiology

The program achieves its goals by providing students with a firm grounding in the scientific discipline of their choice with additional coursework related to business, management, communication skills, regulatory affairs and other topics important to career success outside of the scientific content of their chosen discipline — a “Science Plus” design.

The business focus is further enhanced through a project-based internship experience providing hands-on exposure to career opportunities in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, biomedical innovation, health care industries or related organizations in the private or nonprofit sectors.

The BSM Program is part of the Professional Science Master’s (PSM) initiative of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in partnership with the Council of Graduate Schools, and is designed to provide workforce-oriented master’s degrees in the fields of science and mathematics. “Professional Science Master’s degrees are designed in partnership with employers and feature learning in real-world environments. They educate science professionals to meet the STEM workforce demands of the 21st century.” — www.professionalsciencemasters.org

Highlights• “Science Plus” curricular content• Project-based internship• Expert full-time faculty• Convenient, safe, suburban campus• Earn your degree while remaining employed;

classes are offered in the evening and online

CurriculumStudents in the BSM Program matriculate into one of the basic medical science disciplines, and must accumulate 36 academic credits to earn their master’s degree. At least 24 credits must be earned from a scientific curriculum of required and elective courses, and eight (8) credits from a professional skills curriculum consisting of one required and several elective course options. Didactic courses are offered during the regular GSBMS evening sessions in the fall, spring and summer academic terms. Some elective professional skills courses are available through NYMC’s School of Health Sciences and Practice, many as online offerings.

BSM students must also apply for and complete an internship at an approved participating partner, company, agency or institution and develop a capstone report. The capstone is either a professional description and critical analysis of the internship project or, if this is precluded by proprietary concerns, a scholarly literature review.

BSM Professional Skills Courses • Career Pathways in Pharmacology • Human Resource Management• Health Economics• Law and Health• Organizational Theory• Responsible Conduct of Research• Strategic Management

The Academic Environment NYMC offers a vibrant academic environment for graduate students. There is close interaction among students and faculty throughout the basic science departments, each offering its own series of graduate courses, research seminars and journal club discussions of current research. The research laboratories are appointed with state-of-the-art equipment and are led by investigators of national and international reputation. Many areas of research are represented with particular strength and breadth in cardiovascular science, infectious diseases, neuroscience, cancer and cell signaling.

Diversity and InclusionOur historically diverse and inclusive campus warmly welcomes students from all backgrounds, creating a comfortable, supportive and friendly atmosphere that promotes the well-being and success of all members of our academic community.
