HAMMERSMITH AND FULHAM NAMED COUNCIL OF THE YEAR

MORE YOUTHS ARRESTED FOLLOWING FATAL STABBING OF FULHAM SCHOOLBOY

‘Lungs’ specialist and rising su-perstar Florence Welch was joined on stage by consultants from the borough’s hospitals for a one-off charity gig.

The Florence and the Machine singer, whose appropriately named debut album won her the critics’

choice award at this year’s Brits, was drafted in last night (18) to help raise more than £10,000 for local and national chest charities.

Just 300 lucky people were treated to renditions of songs from the album, performed by Florence with help from Imperial College Healthcare’s medical director on saxophone, a radiologist on bass, a gastroenterologist on drums and a chest physician on keyboards.

Staff from Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals were among those invited to the gig at the Hilton Paddington.

Cash raised from the event will be split between TB Alert, the UK’s only dedicated TB char-ity, the Imperial TB patient fund and the Chest and Allergy Spe-cial Trustees Fund.

FOUR more youths were arrested this morning in connection with the fatal stabbing of a Fulham schoolboy at Victoria station.

Police have already charged 12 youths with the murder of 15-year-old Sofyen Belamouad-den, who was stabbed at the book-ing office of the District and Cir-cle Line underground station on during the evening rush hour on Thursday. A post mortem inves-tigation found that Sofyen, who lived in Acton and was a pupil at Henry Compton School in King-wood Road, Fulham, died of stab wounds.

The 12 youths charged with mur-der were due to appear at West London Magistrates’ Court this morning. Four are aged 16 and the rest are aged 17, and all come from south London. A further seven youths have been bailed to return. Three boys and one girl arrested this morning are being interviewed at a south London police station.

Town hall chiefs are celebrating today after Hammersmith and Ful-ham Council was crowned council of the year at an awards event for local authorities.

The council was praised by judg-es from the Local Government Chronicle for ‘doing something very special in challenging times’.Hammersmith and Fulham’s lead-er, Stephen Greenhalgh, was also singled out for praise in the awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel in central London last night.

Local Government Chronicle edi-tor Emma Maier said: “The whole of local government is expected to deliver more for less but Hammer-smith and Fulham is a leader. With a very strong leader and a clear vi-sion, it is reducing council tax while improving services and resident sat-isfaction.” Staff at all levels are en-gaged and supportive, she said, and the relationship between the coun-

cil, the police and the PCT is ‘im-pressive’.Geoff Alltimes, the coun-cil’s chief executive, also took over control of NHS Hammersmith and Fulham last year.Ms Maier said the council had managed to stay ‘at the top of its game’ and was already putting into action its plan to cope with increasing funding challenges, adding that it had been ‘contributing to the na-tional stage’ and had captured the ‘zeitgeist’ of local government. The council is widely thought to be a model for how Tory leader David Cameron sees local authori-

ties, with its policy of cutting the workforce, outsourcing services and selling council buildings to cut costs and lower council tax.

Receiving the award, Mr Alltimes said it was a ‘fantastic achievement’, adding: “This recognises not only the clear vision set by councillors but also the teamwork and passion that exists at Hammersmith and Fulham in delivering quality value-for-mon-ey services to our residents.”

SHEPHERD’S BUSH SCHOOLBOY SIGNED UP FOR DREAM MOVIE ROLEBy Dan Hodges, Mar 25 2010

With only one performance to his name – as Fagin in a school produc-tion of Oliver! - the 12-year-old from Shepherd’s Bush had no idea what to expect when he was en-couraged by a family friend to audi-tion for the main part in The Great Ghost Rescue.

But he dazzled the producers, who picked him to star alongside veteran Brit actor Jason Isaacs in the family adventure.

“I didn’t have that many expecta-tions, so I wasn’t that nervous,” said Toby. “I had to learn three scenes to perform, and it seemed to go al-right – I didn’t really know what was good or bad. “I was home by my-self when the phone rang and the producer asked if I wanted a part in the film. I said ‘yes’ and she said ‘well you’ve got one’. “It was re-ally good, although my first feeling was nerves as well as excitement.”

Toby. “All the ghosts want to go and scare the people in London – I go with them but I don’t really want to scare them, I want to talk to them and reason with them. Then we all go to the Houses of Parliament and I make a big speech to the Prime Minister.”If the filming experience is a posi-tive one, it could herald the begin-ning of an exciting career for Toby.Mum Polly Steele said: “It’s totally unexpected, but of course I’m proud.

!

From fulhamchronicle.co.uk

Toby has been trying to play it cool with his classmates at Chiswick Community School, but his cover will soon be blown once filming gets under way, as he is planning to chart the whole bewildering proc-ess through social networking web-site Twitter.

“I don’t know what to expect – I’ve never really used Twitter and I’ve never done a film,” said Toby. “But I’m just getting into Twitter now and it seems quite cool. “I’m look-ing forward to filming the special effects bits. With the green screen I’m just going to try and act as if something’s there.”

Toby will play a young boy who died after falling off the roof of an orphanage at the turn of the 20th century, and who joins a dysfunc-tional family of ghosts, each with their own paranormal idiosyncra-sies. “I meet them all and for 107 years I just don’t do anything, then there’s a scheme by the Govern-ment to destroy lots of old ruins and make them into housing,” said

I just hope he has a really wonder-ful time doing it. “You never know with films what the future holds, so you just have to value the moment. You never want to deny your child a great fun experience.”
