Happy New year everyoNe! Thank good-ness the Mayans were wrong and we all get a shot at another remarkable year. The holidays are behind us and our wallets are a little lighter. It’s the New Year, however, so our ambitions are bigger than ever. You know the drill. What am I going to do dif-ferent this year to improve my life in some form or fashion? It’s the ol’ resolution wheel we each spin every January. Saving more money, eating better, exercise more, and

quality time with loved ones are all perennial favorites. It’s different for each of us and usually different each year. I could certainly stand to improve in each of the above.

This month’s edition is focusing on health and exercise. That’s right ladies! Only 4½ months until swim suit season. Honestly, while I’m sure many of us would prefer to look a little slimmer poolside, it’s the actual lifestyle improvements we realize that are the driving benefits of living a healthier life. Besides just adding years to our life, regular exercise also provides more energy and ability to get more done every day. Essentially, it’s our productivity that increases right alongside our health. The swim suit physique is just a perk! Local Life takes an inside look at the latest exercise craze sweeping the nation known as Crossfit. If you haven’t heard of it yet, do yourself a favor and read this month’s article inside. We also give a few tips for sticking to those exercise commitments. I think I’m lucky because our entire family is pretty active. It’s great because it’s a passion that we all share and can participate in together. Any excuse to spend more time together is OK in my book.

Whatever your resolution is this year, my hope is that you approach it with tenacity and vigor. If there’s an area, whether physical, mental or spiritual, in which you wish to improve then nothing should stand in your way. We are capable of amazing feats if we believe we can achieve it. 2013 is staring you in the face. What do you plan on mak-ing happen over the next 12 months? Don’t be afraid to dream big. 2012 was great but I plan on making this year even better. Who’s with me?

Local Life

It’s resolution time again and you’ve probably found yourself at that familiar cross-roads of deciding what to do about that extra two inches around your waist. It’s a new year and this is the year that you’re going to discover that “new you”! Raise your hand if you’ve had this self-reflective convo with yourself in any of the past ten years. Of course, you have! We all do. Some of us even go so far as to sign up for a gym mem-bership or, at the very least, renew our commitment to actually go to the gym we so regularly pay for. ¦ Instead of discovering what you could possibly transform into, why not take a deep, internal dive into WHY you’ve fallen off the proverbial wagon in the first place. For many of us, I think it just comes down to fun vs. work. After all, they do call it “working” out. Often it feels like a major inconvenience to carve time out of your schedule to go painfully push around heavy objects or remorsefully sweat on a treadmill for what can seem like minimal visible results. It’s just a hassle. è

THIS YEAR I’M GETTING FIT( I Think! )

Without getting too philosophical, for which I am completely under-qualified to do, I want to take a crack at how we can take a fresh perspective at our physical fitness regimen. Health and wellness really comes down to 2 major factors: Diet & Exercise. Obviously, what we put into our body will have a ma-jor impact on how we feel and look. Then, of course, is what we do physically that helps build and tone our muscular physique. Some take the road of investing in equipment for the house to handle their exercise routines on their own schedule. Whether it’s just a set of dumbbells and a jump rope, or a full blown home gym, there’s certainly plenty of quality equipment that can get the job done. Hon-estly, one can get all the exercise they need with little to no equipment at all. A fad of late has been the exercise routines on DVD such as P90-X and Insanity. These are great too, as I’ve done both. At the end of the day, how-ever, it comes down to commitment. Like any goal of development you simply have to stick to the plan to see the desired results. Finally, there’s the avenue of paying your hard-earned money to a facility that has any equipment you could ever need and focuses solely on physical fitness. This is the more traditional role that

most see as the best option if they can fit it in the budget. So, how do we decide and how can we ensure that it’s not money thrown down the drain? Good question. While I can’t decide for you, I can certainly provide some tips to make the journey a little less painful.

Partner UP For starters, any commitment is best kept when you have someone to keep you account-able. I believe the single best way to stick to a fitness plan is to have a partner with simi-lar goals. While you may not answer the bell for you, you certainly don’t want to let your partner down on most days. Excuses become harder to find when you have to say them out loud to another human. Partners keep us hon-est, motivate us, and provide an immediate outlet to share the struggle with. Applying this to the above options is easy. If it’s an at-home solution, sometimes a spouse is best. This also makes the diet portion simpler. When you and your spouse choose to live healthier, things like grocery shopping and cooking become easier to swallow (pun intended). My wife and I did both P90-X and the Insanity programs together as much as possible and it was actu-ally a wonderful opportunity for us to hang out. At the gym, accountability is extremely important. For starters, it’s safer. When lift-ing weights, having a spotter around is always a good idea. It’s also good to have someone in your ear supporting you and encouraging you to get one more set, one more rep. Find a buddy and start setting your schedule – it’s just that easy. Physical trainers can serve this role and also provide a world of education. I know several in the area that are professional and genuinely concerned about your goals.

edUcate YoUrselfThe internet will provide more information than you could ever want to know and it’s free. Disinterest sets in because we don’t have a clue what we’re doing in a lot of cases. The more you read up on certain techniques, supple-

ments, and programs, the more engaged we become. If I don’t understand the rules of baseball, then the sport might seem rather boring to me. Once I learn a little about it, hear some feel-good stories, and become vested in the game, I discover that it’s possible the greatest sport ever. Fitness works the same way. Learning how the body develops and re-acts to certain movements and programs will drive a surge of interest that you’ll want to con-tinually grow. Subscribe to a fitness magazine. Watch YouTube spots on different techniques. Podcasts are available daily that are solely committed to fitness.

track ItThey say (whoever “they” is) that a written goal is 83% more likely to be achieved than a stated goal. Actually, “they” was a Harvard study done in 2011. Taking the time and effort to write down your fitness goals and the plan to achieve them make it more concrete. Go a step further and put it in your purse or wallet, or post it somewhere you can see it every day. For-mal programs in the marketplace today have you take progress photos. Take some snapshots before you start any program and periodically throughout your progress. Many times it’s diffi-cult to see the results unless we have something to refer to. Always go to the gym (or your ga-rage) with a plan – don’t just show up. Know what exercises you are going to do before you start each day. Have a system of working the whole body and providing adequate rest for ar-eas recently worked. If you’re doing your part in educating yourself, constantly evolve the work-outs that you’re creating.

talk aboUt ItI’m sure nothing beats you down more than reading another Facebook post that so and so has just “checked in” at Big Muscles Gym and they’re about to get their pump on. This is not what I mean by talking about it. How-ever, most of you have a friend or two that does have a general interest in fitness that you

could share stories, swap ideas, and bounce stuff back and forth with. This is important because it keeps it fresh and top of mind. No question, if you’ve found a partner, you should be communicating daily. If you’re at a gym, get to know other members and the trainers. There’s a certain communal vibe you get by having relationships with those people that have similar goals to yours. Plus, we learn from each other. One day you may be getting great advice on abdominal exercises and the next you’re giving equally great advice for ton-ing your arms. The more you talk about it, the more important it becomes in your life.

All in all, exercise and fitness should be about self-improvement. Self-improvement should always be viewed as a good thing. It should be fun. The minute working out becomes actual work you’ve started to miss the whole point. Perspective is the key. Take the perspective that this journey will be enjoyable and life-altering. The decision to start is only the be-ginning and really the easiest part of the pro-cess. Take the time to make real change and commit to whatever plan you set for yourself. It doesn’t have to cost money or you can spend thousands. Either way, action is required. Find a good partner, set some solid goals, get educated, and be sure to communicate often about progress, improvement, and results. Making these 4 small investments into your fitness routine will certainly make the com-mitment a lot more pleasurable and easy to stick to. My hope is that you all see value in improving yours, and your family’s active life-style. Caring for the health of your body is not an appearance thing. It’s a living thing! Re-duced illness, added years, increased energy, and over all sense of esteem are the benefits of leading an active lifestyle. I know you’ll make the commitment. I know most of you see the value in it. The question is will you have the courage to plan and stick to your goals to achieve those results you annually desire when January rolls around every year. I know you can. Good luck!

“Welcome to our box! We don’t workout in a gym. There are no mirrors here to flex in. Our hands are callused. You won’t find the latest technological advances in our equipment. We support each other every day. We are a fam-ily. We are a community. We are Crossfitters. And we’re waiting for you to come work with us. Crossfit is the latest craze to storm the fit-ness world. Created by Coach Greg Glass-man, Crossfit is a fitness regimen that consists of constantly varied functional movements performed at relatively high intensity. Basi-cally, the idea is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness for all people at all levels. We say our specialty is in not specializing – rather improving physical skills holistically in order to be prepared for any demand everyday life throws our way.

It’s hard work. However, it’s hard work that everyone can do. Every workout is different and they’re called WODs. These “Workouts Of the Day” can be scaled for any fitness level and age. We only ask that you push yourself to

your own limits. The movements and weights are prescribed for every WOD and are known as RX. If you cannot “RX” a WOD, modifi-cations are provided for you to complete the exercise at your level. We all work together but you compete only with yourself. “PR” is a daily goal. It stands for Personal Record and is our method to track performance improve-ment. Crossfit is also our community. In fact, it’s one of the main components that has made our sport so popular and, more importantly, effective. There are days I just don’t feel like going. There are workouts that seem too hard. There are simply times when my heart isn’t in it. All of these things fade with the thought of my friends and family at the box. I certainly don’t want to let them down. I know that every one of them will be there encouraging me. I know we will share the same floor when we are done because we gave it 100%. I know we will all share that same knowing nod of ac-complishing something we really didn’t think possible. I’d like to explain that feeling but it’s something that can only be experienced. There are over 4,500 affiliated boxes world-

It’s a good feeling. There are even competitions should I ever desire to put my fit-ness to the test. The Crossfit Games champion is deemed “The Fittest Man and Woman on Earth”. I am a man in my mid-30’s and was lapped by a 53 year old woman a couple of weeks ago. She was amazing. They all are.
