We asked the Local First Indiana business members and a number of Bloomington residents, from students to professionals, to give us a list of their favorite gifts from local, independent businesses in Bloomington, and we created a guide that was made for Bloomington, by Bloomington.

We also asked our business members to give us a list of the items they are most excited about on their shelves for the holidays this year. Some are best sellers and some are simply favorites of the owners, who we consider to be experts in their fields. I can guarantee that some of these items will be your new favorites, too. There are many possibilities here, from retail, to food and beverage, to entertainment or experiential gifts like dance lessons or theater tickets, to charitable donations. There is literally something for everyone on your list and with a large range of prices because this list was created by so many different kinds of people.

Make a difference with your money this year and keep it in your town. You will improve your community and feel more connected at the same time. Could anything be more important?

A special thanks to all of those who went out of their way to contribute to our list.

Thanks for picking up our guide!

Why Shop Local?1. Protect our local economy. Locally-owned businesses pay taxes

here—not in another state or on another continent. Those taxes help provide us with the services and infrastructure we need. A non-locally owned big-box store creates an annual deficit of $468 per 1,000 square feet.

2. Owners of local, independent businesses are more invested in their businesses and communities. The same study in Austin, TX found that “local merchants spend a much larger portion of total revenue on local labor to run the enterprise and sell the merchandise.” In turn, the owners, vendors, and workers will tend to spend a large amount of their earnings locally.

3. Additionally, local, independent businesses give two and a half times more per employee to local nonprofits than larger firms.

4. Protect our environment. Local owners are often more invested in the environmental conditions of their city. They work with and for their neighbors. Many local businesses also tend to be situated well for models that support walking and biking.

5. Ownership matters. Local business owners know Bloomington and they know your needs. If you have a suggestion or request or want to thank them for a job well done, you can sit down with the owner.

I found shopping local for the holidays to be much more satisfying than previous years when I wasn’t focused on supporting local businesses. I liked knowing that my purchases

were helping to support Bloomington business, and I enjoyed the personal interaction with local business owners. If I couldn’t find

something, or needed a suggestion, it was nice to talk with people who took pride in their business and its products/services.

Shift Your Shopping CampaignLocal First Indiana is proud to participate in the Shift Your Shopping Campaign. This campaign, representing more than 38,000 businesses across North America, encourages residents to take job creation and economic concerns into their own hands by exercising their power to strengthen their own local economies.

This is an effective strategy all year-round, but especially important at the holidays: The National Retail Federation reports that holiday shoppers plan to spend an average of $704.18 on holiday gifts and seasonal merchandise in 2011. That’s down slightly from last year, but NRF is still forecasting overall holiday retail sales to grow 2.8 percent during the months of November and December, to $465.6 billion.

Keeping that money in your community has a proven impact.

Numerous studies have found directing that spending to locally owned, independent businesses will create impressive benefits. For example, a 2008 study of Kent County Michigan by Civic Economics projected shifting 10% of the county’s per capita spending from chains to locally-owned independent businesses would create “almost $140 million in new economic activity and 1,600 new jobs for the region.”

In addition, annual surveys over the last four years show that places that “go local” do better. For example, last year, the Institute for Local Self Reliance gathered data on annual revenue changes from nearly 2,800 independent businesses. That data revealed independent businesses in communities executing long-term “buy local and independent” campaigns averaged a healthy 5.6 percent increase over the previous year. This gain more than doubled the 2.1 percent increase reported by independent businesses in areas lacking such campaigns. All of those campaigns operated with support from the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA) and/or Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE).

Shift Your Shopping combines the efforts of AMIBA and BALLE with more than 150 local business alliances comprised of over 38,000 local businesses. Grassroots groups like Asheville Grown Business Alliance in North Carolina and Oakland Grown in California will execute campaigns with their own flair, picking and choosing from campaigns like Buy Local First week, America Unchained!, and Plaid Friday, the colorful alternative to Black Friday.

Some facts and studies: For four years, a national survey has found that locally owned independent business have had increased holiday sales compared to overall retail sales figures. Locally owned independent businesses in cities and towns with Buy Local campaigns reported a higher increase in sales compared with cities without these campaigns. See our Resources and Studies page to learn more! www.localfirstindiana.org/resources/economic-studies/

I prefer to buy from a retailer whom I trust has the knowledge it takes to stock the best piece of cookware, article of clothing or

bicycle part. I also prefer that the profits from my purchases stay in my community rather than add to the fortunes of a few billionaires in

Arkansas or masses of shareholders throughout the world. –Christina Campoll

Think outside the Gift Box! Celebrate the Sustainable Way

Jacqui Bauer, 2011

The holidays don’t have to be a celebration of overconsumption! Below are a few no- or low-material gift ideas that will make anyone’s Christmas a happy one—and support the economy at the same time.

1. The personalized song. For $5, you assemble a silly or romantic song for a friend, spouse or relative. www.instasong.com

2. Recycled stuff. From local art (like www.moesache.com and www.twistedlimbpaper.com) to snazzy home décor (www.globalgiftsindy.com), there are all sorts of ideas for people who like the idea of closing the loop.

3. Fix something loved that’s broken. www.fixitclub.com

4. Buy them a home energy audit (http://www.gnnbloomington.com/?page_id=677), or a simple weatherization kit (weatherstripping, foam draft-stoppers for switchplates and outlets, etc.), and start them on the path to perpetual savings on their utility bills.

5. Sponsor a membership in a non-profit organization, especially one like www.catalogchoice.org, which will remove your loved one’s name from junk mail lists as a membership perk.

6. Plant a tree in their honor. Try the Bloomington Tree Fund. http://bloomington.in.gov/street-trees-and-landscaping

7. Regift. Everybody’s doing it. There is no shame in finding loving homes for underappreciated gifts.

8. Tickets to something. A play, a movie or a performance at one of our lovely local venues. Make it a package with a gift certificate for dinner.

9. Sponsor or subsidize their membership in a community-supported agriculture (CSA) program (www.localgrowers.org/CSA.html), and provide support for local farms at the same time.

10. A gift certificate for a massage, a dance lesson or a pottery class. Try Downtown Bloomington gift certificates, good at dozens of participating downtown merchants. www.downtownbloomington.com/giftcertificates.html

Your challenge? Think outside the gift box—you can both support the local economy and minimize holiday consumption. What better way to celebrate the season of peace and giving?
