Maverick Sports & Collectables

When it comes to cards, collectables, memorabilia, and clothing, any true sports fan knows that Maverick Sports & Collectables is the one and only place to shop. Since 1999, Maverick Sports & Collectables has been providing Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with a first class shop in which to find deals and gifts for every sports fanatic.

Born in Point Claire, Quebec, owner Andrew Corbett moved to Newfoundland at a very young age. He worked in a sports store for ten years while attending university and then for some years thereafter before starting his own shop.

“I wanted to grow it into a mix of both sports apparel as well as collectables, such as signed memorabilia, sports cards, etc.,” says Corbett. “I’m pretty much involved in all aspects of the business from its inception until now.”

Having spent several years in the business, Corbett says he has thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“All the people that you meet are fantastic and, given my love for sports, it’s a perfect fit,” he says. “Meeting people from all over the world and seeing regular customers grow up over the years is a great experience. As well, being able to talk ‘sports’ with everyone who comes in is also a lot of fun, given all the different teams’ fans.”

However, there is more than meets the eye when it comes to the collectables aspect of the store.

“One thing a lot of people don’t know is that, on the collectables side of things, we also deal with Newfoundland and Canadian coins and paper money, as well as the supplies needed for collecting.”

Corbett says that, of course, hockey is always very popular, but baseball has been growing in popularity since the Jays made the playoffs.

“Right now we are in the midst of Blue Jays fever. I expect we’ll ride it well into the Christmas season,” Corbett tells The Outport. “We also have our new-look Ice Caps team and NHL hockey back underway.”

As the Christmas season gets closer, Corbett says Maverick Sports & Collectables will feature a lot of new and exciting products. Also, if there’s anything you’re searching for that isn’t in stock, Corbett says the staff will help you out!

“We’re strong believers that if we don’t have something in stock that a customer is looking for, we will try our best to order it in.”

Ballistic Skate & Snow Launched twenty years ago, Ballistic is Atlantic Canada’s longest-running skate shop located in downtown St. John’s. Before the store opened, skateboarders had no other option but to order skate clothing and equipment through mail-order companies.

Owner and creator Lorne Loder tells The Outport that the shop has grown in size and inventory but remains true to its roots.

“Ballistic started back in 1995 as a very small shop situated in a much smaller location than it occupies now. Things were very different on Water Street in 1995. There were a lot of vacancies and not a lot of street traffic. Since then, we have moved twice to accommodate a much larger inventory but have stuck to our original block,” says Loder. “The store has always stayed true to its original vision of a board shop that also deals in clothing, footwear, and accessories. I have always owned the store; however, there have been four different managers that have played large roles over the last twenty years.”

Loder says he believes that the conception of the Internet has created a more informed shopper, hence the rise in customer demand for clothing with functionality and quality fabric.

“Our customers are more in tune with purchasing a quality piece that will be worth the money spent and they want the item to serve a purpose in their daily life.”

Loder has been able to watch downtown St. John’s evolve having grown up in St. John’s, and even more so having operated a business on Water Street for twenty years.

“It’s a lot of fun owning a business on Water Street for so long. It’s often a lot of work, of course, but it’s fun, too. I’ve met an enormous number of people through the store and it’s played a huge role in my life,” he says. “I’ve had a front row seat in the metamorphosis that Water Street has gone through and it’s been an interesting one!

“Another interesting point is that we are now seeing the children of our original customers shopping at the store, which really makes me realize how long we’ve been around.”

In terms of being openly inclusive, Loder says it’s a no-brainer. He can’t imagine living life any other way.

“It’s my natural mindset. I can’t imagine not being open and inclusive to all people. I’m proud to say that as far back as grade school I was always open and inclusive to different classmates that were homosexual (what is now referred to as LGBTQ, but it wasn’t back then),” says Loder. “Things were different back then and it was really tough for some. Fortunately, things are much different now and society in general is much more open to the LGBTQ community. It wasn’t like that in the 80’s, I can assure you.”

In terms of the store in particular, Loder says it has always been an inclusive business.

“Ballistic has always been somewhat of an alternative, downtown store in which we’ve always tried to make everyone feel welcome. Quite frankly, I don’t really give a d*mn who’s sleeping with who.”

With only two months left until Christmas, Loder says the shop is starting to get chaotic.

“This time of year is extremely busy getting ready for both Christmas and snowboarding season. Also, with the temperature dropping, we see a lot of people looking for winter jackets this time of year. Fall to winter is always very busy for us,” explains Loder. “Christmas is always fun because of both the hectic and social nature of it and, of course, snowboarding season is the best season of all, because it’s snowboarding, and snowboarding is the most fun thing on earth, obviously!”

Loder says he would like to thank every last one of Ballistic’s customers, longtime shoppers as well as newcomers.

“We celebrated our 20th anniversary this summer which is monumental in a small business and we owe it all to our customers.”

The New For those of us who spend a lot of our travel time shopping for brands that we can’t get back home, Holly King has offered us a convenient alternative. Pop Up Boutique was opened in 2013 in an effort to provide Newfoundlanders with the opportunity to buy high-end brand name clothing without having to pay a fortune for shipping or hop on a plane.

Since Pop Up Boutique was created as pop-up shop (a short-term sales space) as the name suggests, King recently decided to turn the boutique into a permanent storefront on Bates Hill called Maisy Lavender.

“It was clear there was a new appetite in St. John’s for designer items from brands like Michael Kors, Coach, and Kate Spade,” King tells The Outport. “People seem to buy everything online now and they travel, which means they are shopping at outlets. I knew people wouldn’t mind buying end-of-season goods as long as they were getting them at an awesome price.”

In the fall of this year, Pop Up Boutique evolved into Maisy Lavender, offering shoppers a permanent sales space from which to purchase designer labels. Apart from a change in name and a shift to being open seven days a week, the boutique has kept its features.

“Everything people loved about Pop Up Boutique, like 30 to 80 percent off designer fashions from brands like Betsey Johnson, Aidan Mattox, Michael Kors, and Kate Spade (to name a few), stayed the same,” says King.

Since the conception of the shop, the concentration has shifted toward dresses, handbags, jewelry, and outwear.

“The beautiful thing about our store is that we typically only get one of each item, which means you won’t be showing up to your Christmas party

in the same dress as someone else.”

King says the Pop Up Boutique (and subsequently, Maisy Lavender) was opened in an effort to offer stunning clothing and accessories at a fraction of the price.

“We bring in a wide range of brands at different price points. We have designer dresses starting at $59, and the highest-priced dress currently in our store is a fully-beaded Aidan Mattox gown which would set you back $669 dollars (not including shipping and duty) if you would have ordered it from Saks Fifth Avenue last fall, but it can be purchased at our store for $169,” says King. “I love being able to offer people beautiful items at a reduced price. I, myself, love getting a deal and it’s great to share that joy with others.”

King says that cocktail and eveningwear are becoming more and more elaborate with designers opting for embellishments and intricate embroidery, and she’s excited to be able to offer these styles in the future.

Check out their website at www.maisylavender.com, visit their Facebook at www.facebook.com/maisylavender, or pop into the shop at 4 Bates Hill – they’re open from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday and Noon to 5:00 pm on Sundays!

Fog Off ClothingWith the first store having been opened in Halifax, NS, and a second location in Cavendish, PEI, Fog Off Clothing has been making quite a name for itself across Atlantic Canada.

Halifax native Tim Henneberry-Fudge opened his first store in June of 2014 in his hometown and has gathered quite a

following. However, it’s not just the brand with which shoppers are enamored; it’s the message behind it.

“[Fog Off] is a tangible symbol of mental health awareness. It’s fun to say, but also carries a heavy message, which was our goal. We want people to talk about why they want to wear that shirt or hoodie or

hat,” Hennebury-Fudge tells The Outport. “For the people who have mental health issues, it’s also a security item; a reminder that there are people everywhere thinking about this and giving support. It gives people a voice and an expression of support.”

According to the website, Fog Off’s

Article by Sarah Furlong

The Outport // November 2015 9

objective is to offer hope and support to everybody:

From day to day we all struggle with some form of mental fog, the things in life that take the wheel and steer us in a direction in which we have no control. It can be stress, depression, mental illness, bullying, a terminal disease, relationship issues, addiction, pressure, social acceptance; we all have or know someone who has had to deal with this mental fog or are in the midst of it.

Fog Off Clothing brand gives a voice, a vessel to spread and share the message loud and clear when you want to be heard. Supporting and helping one another is what this brand believes in 100%. No one should ever have to travel down a foggy path alone.

Fog Off donates 10 percent of their profits to grassroots, hands-on mental

health initiatives in Atlantic Canada.

Hennebury-Fudge says that mental health issues are close to his heart, which is why Fog Off was created.

“My mother suffers from depression, and my grandmother did as well. I know I have ADHD and OCD, but I manage well without medication.

“We all know someone affected. My former partner worked in emergency rooms as a psychiatrist and I would hear these stories of teenagers committing suicide. It makes no sense; they don’t even know who they are yet. So, I had to do something to help. Now, it’s about support, physical in terms of the comfort of the clothing and financial in terms of the donations. “

“We started in Nova Scotia last year and we covered our costs in three months. We donated thousands to the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia and since opening in PEI in June, we have donated $2,500 to the Mental Health Association there.”

In addition, with every Fog Off purchase of over $50, the company will donate $5 to the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia HUGS campaign.

“Everyone has mental fog and we’re offering a branded message everyone can spot, relate to and get talking about,” explains Hennebury-Fudge.

“More than 40 per cent of people say they wouldn’t associate with someone with a mental health issue, but 100 per cent of Canadians are affected by mental health, whether their own illness or a friend or family member’s.

Hennebury-Fudge was 18 years old when he started his first business endeavour.

“I built a seafood restaurant in Halifax which I still own today. I’ve always been my own boss and am always looking to expand my thoughts and business ideas,” he says. “I also own a dog bakery and pet supply store where we make all of our own products – treats, leashes, grooming products, bandanas, etc. I am also a recording artist and songwriter, and have even worked with some of Dolly Parton’s people in Nashville, Tennessee.”

Currently, Hennebury-Fudge’s mind is

focused on expanding the Fog Off brand and increasing its availability. In just over a year, he will be opening a third location of Fog Off in St. John’s, NL.

“Fog Off is such an East Coast message. We have faith in the future here and we think we can make an impact,” Hennebury-Fudge tells The Outport. “The [St. John’s] store will also have a barber shop in the back of the store called Barber on H20,” he says. “I’ve seen this trending in bigger

cities and I thought it would be a good concept to bring to the rock. A trendy clothing brand shop where you can grab a great piece of clothing and a quick cut at the same time.”

Hennebury-Fudge says while mental health isn’t a trend, so to speak, we can use trends (like clothing lines and barber shops) to spark a much-needed conversation.

“We need to talk; we need to be open in order to help people who are really suffering,” says Hennebury-Fudge. “For me, it’s not a trend. I have personal connections and I am a humanitarian who has worked hard to help with this cause, and I’m not going anywhere until we can discuss it openly and offer support to those who need it. Mental health isn’t trendy; it’s important a kid can wear that shirt and feel his fog is coming off because it’s a supportive thing. “

Check out the brand at www.fogoffclothing.com and look out for the new store!

The Weight loss Industry 2015Jump Off The Diet Roller Coaster

And Take Back Your HealthThe weight loss industry, which emphasizes calorie restriction over good nutrition, generates billions in revenue annually. Even though studies show that most individuals re-gain virtually all of the weight that was lost regardless of whether or not they maintained their diet or exercise program. Shifting focus away from calories and emphasizing food quality rather than quantity will help to reduce obesity, related diseases and cardiovascular risk.

Rapid weight loss and re-gain that can occur from fad dieting is also detrimental to health. Such weight cycling contributes to hypertension, insulin resistance and dyslipidemia (an abnormal amount of lipids (e.g. cholesterol and/or fat) in the blood), resulting in increased mortality risk and worsening cardiovascular outcomes.

Special diet foods, diet pills, diet drinks, diet plans may seem like a great idea: something that makes you full, takes away your hunger, and still enables you to have your favorite foods (processed diet food is a multi-billion dollar industry), but dieting doesn’t work in the long run and sometimes it doesn’t work in the short term either.

Weight loss happens when our body becomes “NORMAL” from eating Real Whole Food. Diets are anything but normal. Diets are ABNORMAL. Jump off the Diet Roller Coaster today! It’s all a big hoax and a scheme for companies to make money off us, and it’s worked. The more we diet, the unhealthier and more addicted to food we get.

Take back your life and your health. Move, eat Real Whole Food, stop being afraid of healthy, real fats and stop counting calories. Examine the nutrients in foods and relate them to your body and how those nutrients affect you. The evidence supports the mantra that “food can be the most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison”. Consider taking some pointers from the Mediterranean-type diet which is low in saturated fat, rich in healthy oils, and packed with fresh fruits and vegetables (plus exercise).

Replace butter and margarine with healthy oils.Switch up your proteins. Limit red meat and get your protein from skinless chicken and turkey, fish, beans, nuts and other plants.Eat veggies.

Choose whole-grain bread, pasta, rice and other grains. Focus on “real” whole grains that are still in their “whole” form and haven’t been refined.Snack on nuts, seeds or low-fat cheese or dairy instead of processed snack foods. If you drink alcohol, limit your consumption and most of all, set aside enough time to savor every bite.

Fitness & Health

1. Meditate It is taught across many cultures in many regions of the world as an essential part of daily life. Many of us in the west have forgotten that mental health is just as important as physical health. Take 5 minutes out of your day to look up some guided meditation and finally rest that racing mind.

2. ExerciseI’m not talking about joining the gym and diving right into a full on workout regime. Studies show that regular exercise reduces stress. So when you are stressed out about a test or work, take 15 minutes and go for a walk, take the stairs and park a bit further down the parking lot. You will notice a difference in how you feel and how you can handle stressful situations.

3. Eat ProperlyThis one has been said time and time again, your food is your fuel! If you are stuffing your face with junk then you’re going to feel like junk and not be able to cope with stress as well.

4. Count Your BlessingsKeep a gratitude journal. Every morning when you get up, write down 10 things that you are thankful for and why. These can be anything in the world that makes you happy and you are grateful for. Read them to yourself when the list is done and then if you are having a blue day, take a flip through that journal and remind yourself of all the great things in your life.

5. Simply Don’t WorryI can hear all of you now “easier said than done!” It takes some work but it is easier than it seems. When you encounter a stressful situation, step back, take a breath, and analyze if there is anything you can do to deal with the issue. If there is something you can do about it right then in that moment, then use that energy to make it happen. If there is nothing you can do about it, then there’s no sense in worrying about it because all you’re doing is sucking the good energy out of yourself. Pick your battles and spend your energy wisely.

5 Ways To Reduce Stress

Life As a Femme On Wheels Fashion is a touchy topic in my life. I am not one of those people with a stack of cosmetics on my bathroom counter, and it’s a good day if I get out the door with hair brushed, shoes on and meds in my system. But I definitely have my own style. Pink will always draw my eye, as well as anything retro 1950s chic. But as a queer woman with a disability, this journey hasn’t been easy.

My first real “fashion trauma” memory occurred in the early 1990s. White socks with frills on the tops were all the rage for girls, but the frills absolutely had to be worn bunched artistically around the ankle. (Some of you are making a face as you read this, while others are nodding, awash with nostalgia.) I asked my mother for a pair of “frilly socks” with much excitement.

“You need knee socks for your braces,” she reminded me gently. I realized it perhaps for the first time—I

wore hard, clear plastic leg braces that came to just below my knee all day. Knee socks turned down over the top were the only way to protect my skin from friction.

“Can I have them anyway?” I asked.

“We have to put them over your braces.”

Mom bought a pair and brought them home, put them on my feet and I was livid. The ruffle was not around the ankle where it belonged—it just drifted near the top of my leg. That was the end of my journey with frilly socks. For the first time I realized that mainstream trends could leave me behind—that clothing could be inaccessible. The arrival of Spice Girl platforms soon after was another blow. This time, Mom couldn’t even bring them home for me to try—with my wobbly gait and fragile ankles they simply weren’t safe and she just had to say no.

I survived Jr. High and High School with a collection of at least 5 identical elastic waist jeans and long baggy sweaters. (I couldn’t do buttons—The Jegging wouldn’t change my life until years later.) I also had at least 3 pairs of identical, black orthopedic shoes, and I told anyone and everyone that I didn’t care what I wore... even myself. But the truth was, I was desperate to find something… anything… that I could be comfortable in and look how I wanted to look.

Discovering my sexuality in early University didn’t make finding my style any easier. Now all of a sudden I was expected to “look” like a member of the LBGT community. I was flat out told many times that I didn’t look like a lesbian—my clothes were wrong, my makeup (or lack thereof) and my hair. But I kept trying to figure it out. In some ways I think it’s a good thing public nudity is a faux pas and that Newfoundland and Labrador is a very cold place—You can’t just give up on

Life As a Femme On Wheels clothes altogether. But I was tempted.

Changing trends were thankfully on my side—Jeggings in all washes became commonplace, and I was no longer trapped by buttons. I didn’t wear the braces anymore, but even if I had, splint-compatible shoes were all of a sudden available with extra wide openings and cool designs. And slowly, my look emerged. Now, I am proud of my baby face and add lipstick only on very special occasions. I occasionally stick a hair bow in the short side of my asymmetrical bobbed hair. Overall, I prefer jewel tones or dark colours with classic, feminine lines, and I don’t like my clothes too fitted. Perhaps most importantly, I express my style using my mobility equipment rather than fighting against it. My powered wheelchair is Bubblegum Pink and I get compliments at least once a week on both its bright hue and the Platform 9 ¾ luggage tag swinging from the backrest. It took me a long time to accept myself as a Femme On Wheels, but it’s nice to feel comfortable in my own skin… even if I still wistfully remember the frilly socks.

Winterholme Heritage Inn & Spa is excited to announce upcoming changes to its business structure and service options, moving from a Heritage Inn, to a Wellness Center. This has been necessitated by their growing customer base and the desire to offer more to their clients. All of these changes will take effect in January 2016. They will no longer offer bed & breakfast suites, but will continue to offer spa services, as well as spaces for meetings, weddings and private events. Winterholme has partnered with Thrive Therapeutic Massage to bring their clients the Wellness side of Winterholme. In place of the suites, they will offer services such as Registered Massage Therapy, Physiotherapy, Yoga and more – the exact list

of services will be announced in the coming months.

“We have loved every minute in the Bed & Breakfast industry, but are looking to make a well needed change for the building, the owners, its staff and its clients,” said one of the proprietors. “Although it will be sad to see the suites go, we are extremely excited about this change into the wellness industry. Our clients will receive top of the line services while enjoying the beauty and comfort of this Queen Anne heritage structure.”

In terms of the suites, the business will run as usual until the end of the year, December 31, 2015. So those with current suite reservations or Winterholme gift cards will have up until the end of the year to use them for suites. However, come January 2016 those gift cards can be used towards spa and wellness services as well as events. They will contact those with current 2016 suite bookings very soon. Those with events or spa services booked for 2016 onward will not be affected by this change.
