SAFETY TIPS FOR HIKING IN BEAR COUNTRY

Be Alert See the bear before you surprise it. Watch for fresh tracks, scat, and feeding sites (signs of digging, rolled rocks, torn up logs, ripped open ant hills).

Don't Hike Alone Hike in groups of three or more people. 91% of the people injured by bears in Yellowstone since 1970 were hiking alone or with only one hiking partner. Only 9% of the people injured by bears were in groups of three or more people.

Don't Hike at Dawn, Dusk, or at Night Avoid hiking at dawn, dusk, or at night: during summer, that's when grizzly bears are most active.

Make Noise When hiking, periodically yell "Hey bear!" to alert bears to your presence, especially when walking through dense vegetation/blind spots, traveling upwind, near loud streams, or on windy days. Avoid thick brush when-ever possible.

Don't Expect Bears to Notice You First In Yellowstone, bears hibernate for approximately five months each year and have only seven months of ac-tive time to obtain all of their nutritional needs. A bear that's feeding may not see you as quickly as you would think. Pay attention, and see the bear before it sees you...and before you surprise it.

Stay on Maintained Trails Research in Yellowstone has shown that people are more likely to be attacked by a bear when hiking off-trail.

Avoid Carcasses Bears will guard and defend carcasses against other scavengers or humans. Dead ungulates will attract and hold many bears near the carcass site. It is risky to approach a carcass; many bears may be bedded nearby just out of sight. If you find a fresh carcass, leave the area immediately by the same route you approached. Report all carcasses to the nearest ranger station or visitor center.

Stay With Your Stuff Do not leave packs or bags containing food unattended, even for a few minutes. Bears learn new food sources quickly. Allowing bears to obtain human food even once often leads to them becoming aggressive toward people when they come back looking for more. Aggressive bears threaten human safety and eventually must be removed from the park or killed.

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE ON AUGUST 21ST, 2017

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe inspiring sights - a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun's tenuous atmosphere - the corona, will stretch from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun's disk.

Wherever you are, you will be able to see it. Even though the “totality” — the area where the sun is complete-ly blocked out by the moon — is only 72 miles wide, the whole country (even Alaska and Hawaii) will experi-ence a partial eclipse. Gardiner is approximately 70 miles from path of totality.

In zip code 59030, you will see a partial solar eclipse. The eclipse will peak at 11:36:37 am MDT, when the moon obscures 96.9% of the sun. The moon will start to cover the sun at 10:18 am and the eclipse will be complete at 1:00 pm.

The eclipse is on Monday so excessive crowds, heavy traffic and the pressures of meeting the needs of so many visitors in such a short time could stretch us all. Large numbers of visitors will be flocking to the “path of totality,” that 72-mile high stretch where there the total eclipse can be seen if the skies are clear. (Idaho is projecting up to 1 million visitors across the state!) This is happening just below us in Idaho and Wyoming. However, as those locations hit full occupancy, we expect the surge to move north. Additionally, the days be-fore and after the eclipse could bring many to Montana!
