FWP UPDATES EXTENT OF PARASITE DISTRIBUTION IN MONTANA RIVERS PARASITE ASSOCIATED WITH YELLOWSTONE FISH KILL DETECTED IN BIG HOLE

(BOZEMAN, Mont.)—Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks released a map indicating the streams in southwest Montana that have tested positive to date for the presence of Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (PKX). PKX is the parasite associated with the large fish kill in 2016 on the Yellowstone River.

The Big Hole River is the latest Montana waterbody to test positive for the presence of PKX. Other rivers already found to test positive include the Jefferson, Madison, East Gallatin, Gallatin, Yellowstone, Shields (at the Yellowstone), Boulder, Stillwater, and Big Horn. Of these rivers, only on the Yellowstone River has there been a documented disease event associated with PKX. Several Yellowstone tributaries (as noted on the map with white circles) were also tested and the parasite was not detected.

“The presence of the parasite alone doesn’t mean disease,” says FWP Fisheries Chief Eileen Ryce. “However, this map gives us a better handle on the extent of its distribution and reinforces the need to ramp up our fight against aquatic invasive species statewide.”

Recent aquatic invasive species findings in Montana include PKX and invasive mussel larvae in late fall of 2016. Ryce emphasized the need for Montana boaters and other recreationists to always employ the Clean. Drain. Dry. protocol to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.

BISON SHIPMENT BEGINS 15 female bison were shipped to slaughter from the Stephens Creek facility on February 8, 2017. These

bison had been held and tested since March of 2016 for potential transfer under a proposed quarantine pro-gram. Native American tribal partners transported the animals to slaughter and will distribute the meat and hides to their members.

24 males that were part of that same proposed quarantine group will be held in isolation until they are transferred to a facility in Corwin Springs (located in the Gardiner Basin and inside the Designated Sur-veillance Area for brucellosis) for continued quarantine and eventual transfer to Fort Peck. Yellowstone National Park, the state of Montana, and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) have agreed to this plan.

On December 1, 2016, the Interagency Bison Management Plan (IBMP) partners agreed to a 2017 winter operations plan that calls for a reduction of Yellowstone’s current population of 5,500 bison.

400 (+) bison currently captured at Stephens Creek will be shipped to slaughter in the coming days and weeks. These actions will be taken in support of the IBMP goal to reduce the population this winter. Part-ners are aiming to cull 1,000-1,300 animals through a combination of shipping and the public tribal hunt.

Given the severity of the winter, bison will continue to migrate out of the park. Bison capture and shipping operations may continue through March. Information about the number of animals that are captured, processed, shipped, and hunted will be provid-

ed every other week in the Document Library of the IBMP website (use the "Risk Management Action Re-ports" drop down menu).

To date, state and tribal hunters have harvested over 300 bison outside the park in the Gardiner and Hebgen basins. They continue to actively hunt.

Additional information about bison opera-tions will be provided as needed via "Heads Up".

What is Yellowstone’s goal for bison? We work to maintain a viable, wild, migratory population of bison. We also want to send Yellowstone bison to other conservation areas.

For more information about bison manage-ment in the park, visit the newly updated park webpages at: https://www.nps.gov/yell/learn/nature/bisonmgnt.htm. Bison above Gardiner on the morning of February 8th, 2017

BIGHORN PASS TRAIL BRIDGE AVAILABLE FOR USE MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – The Bighorn Pass Trail bridge over the Gallatin River is available for use. The bridge is roughly a half mile from the Bighorn Pass Trailhead, near US-191, in the North-western section of the park. Trail crew removed the damaged bridge in 2014 because of unsafe conditions for hikers and skiers. Thereafter, they built a new bridge in the same location to provide for safe, year-round access to the popular trail. The bridge was reopened for public use in October 2016. Based on public feedback and analysis of the area’s natural resources, managers determined the replace-ment of the bridge was the best alternative to protect resources and provide for visitor use and safety.
