Another way a king can move is by doing what is called castling.

This is when there is nothing between the king and either rook. The king moves over two spaces and rook goes on the other side of the king.

Exception: on a pawn’s first move it may CHOOSE to move two spaces instead.

If a pawn chooses to move two spaces on its first move and thereby skips over the attacking square of the opponent.

This is called en passant: this means to pass one by in French.

The rule of en passant says that if this happens the opponent may choose to capture that pawn as if it only moved one square and landed on the attacking square.

If you get a pawn to the other side of the board it turns into a queen or whatever piece you want.
