11 June 1963SOUTHVIETNAM

President Diem enforced a ban on flying the Buddhist Flag on Wesak, the birthday of Buddha. Just days before, Roman Catholics had been allowed to fly their flag at a celebration.A large crowd of Buddhists protested against the ban. Government forces fired into the crowd of protesters, killing nine people. Before closing my eyes and moving towards the vision of the Buddha, I respectfully plead to President Diem to take a mind of compassion towards the people of the nation and implement religious equality to maintain the strength of the homeland eternally. I call the venerables, reverends, members of the sangha and the lay Buddhists to organise in solidarity to make sacrifices to protect BuddhismWas he a good Buddhist? Why?

But. He sacrificed himself to help other Buddhists?

~14th Dalai Lama (Ocean of Wisdom)

Tibetan leader.

In March 1950, Chinas government marched into Tibet and treated everyone unfairly. In 1959, the Tibetan Buddhist leader (Dalai Lama) ordered a peaceful protest in the streets demanding an end to Chinese rule.In response to this protest, Chinese troops killed thousands of Tibet protesters. The Chinese government banned the Dalai Lama from Tibet (he is now in exile). He can only return if he promises not toprotest against China. The Dalai Lama has been in exile for 50 years and has still not returned back to Tibet. Since 1959, Chinese troops have violently killed many BuddhistTibetans who have peacefully protested against them. The Dalai Lama has ordered that no guns or weapons is to be used by theTibetans as it goes against the Buddhist teachings. What happened and why? What Buddhist teachings are kept and broken here? How?Why is it hard to keep all the Buddhist teachings sometimes?

Now I am loving my country, sacrificing my life and respecting the people of the south."
