Truck to Ship bunkering (1/2)
This method is recognised as most suitable where the amount of LNG to be transferred is less
than 200 cubic meters and when the commercial operation of the ship allows a sufficient
duration for bunkering.

GTT Bunker vessel « 2 barg »
► GTT has developed the design for a LNG bunker ship 4k
With tank pressure set up at 700 mbarg
An AIP was obtained from BV in September 2014
It is defined as a reference case
To give more operational flexibility, an alternative design has been studied with the tank pressure set at 2 barg

Why a risk assessment for LNG bunkering?

Effects of LNG spillage/leak
► Embrittlement of carbon steel structures
► Vapour cloud

LNG Bunkering Ship – NR620
New service notation “LNG bunkering ship” in order to meet the
expectations of owners who plan to build ships to respond to the new
market of ship using LNG as a fuel.
BV NR 620 - LNG Bunkering Ship, published in October 2015
Risk Analysis is required
NR620 covers:
LNG bunkering station
LNG transfer systems
Transfer area
17
LNG Transfer Systems- ERC & QC / DC
18
Emergency Shut-down (ESD) system
• Required to effectively stops the transfer of LNG (and vapour) between the
receiving ship and the bunkering ship.
• The ESD can be activated automatically or manually.
• The bunkering line is to be designed to withstand the surge pressure that
may result from the activation of the ESD system.
• ESD system is to be activated automatically in case of:• Low pressure in the supply tank
• Sudden pressure drop at the transfer pump discharge
• High pressure in the receiving tank
• LNG or vapour leak detection
• Activation of the emergency release coupling
• Safe working envelope of the loading arm exceeded
Risk analysis
20
HAZOP analysis for the LNG transfer system
► Hazard and Operability study
► Single Failure Concept
► Systems to be analysed
1. Bunkering piping systems
2. Gas detection systems
3. Control, monitoring and safety systems
► Unexpected events to be analysed
1. LNG leakage (hose, piping enclosure)
2. Overpressure/venting/motions of the receiving ship
3. Black-out during the bunkering operations
Operation Procedures and guidelines

+
23
SGMF LNG Bunkering guidelines (SGMF + IACS + IAPH)
► A safety zone and a security zone should be established around the bunkering operation in accordance with ISO/TS 18683.
► These zones are in addition to the “IGF code” hazardous area that are required around areas with potential for explosive atmospheres such as the bunkering connections.
24
Compatibility between receiving ship and bunker vessel
• Draught and freeboard difference
• Compatibility of the bunkering arm operating amplitude with the ship bunkering station
• Possibility of visual contact between ship operators and truck operator during bunkering
