2005 Lanthanoids I 2800 LnCl(CN 2 ) with Ln: La, Ce, and Pr: Synthesis and Structure of a New Lanthanide Chloride Cyanamide Related to the PbFCl-Type Structure. — LaCl(CN2) is prepared by solid state metathesis reactions between LaCl3 and Li 2(CN2) (silica tube, 600 °C, 2 d). Single crystals are obtained as colorless transparent plates using a LiCl/KCl flux. LaCl(CN2) crystallizes in space group P21/m with Z = 2. The structure is closely related to that of tetragonal LaOCl (PbFCl type) and contains a [La 2 Cl 2 ] 4+ block layer and two layers of ions in an alternating sequence.
