RUNNING THE EXERCISE: 1. Start with the JTBD, define customer needs, and current

approach to delivering solution What human need are you trying to fill? Not a product, service, or solution but a higher purpose for why

SUBSTITUEQ: What can I substitute to make improvements? What happens if I swap this for that? How can I substitute the place, time, materials, or people?

COMBINEQ: What materials, features, processes, people, products, or components can I combine? Where can I build synergy?

ADAPTQ: What part of my product or service can I change? –In exchange for what? What if I changed the characteristic of a component? Can I adapt the service or process to remove the problem?

MODIFYQ: What if I wrap, exaggerate, or distort a feature, component, service? What will happen if I modify the process in some way to minify or magnify it?

Ex: Boeing substituted components in their aircrafts that would make them lighter and more fuel efficient.

MODIFYEx: Fancy hands expanded the virtual assistant model by offering a service to accomplish tasks without needing offices.

ELIMINATEEx: Square Cash eliminated the need for an ATM to extract and exchange cash.

REARRANGE/REVERSEEx: Uber and Lyft rearranged the standard process for using a taxi/requesting a ride by making it all mobile.

WHAT: Brainstorming method that allows for ideas to be generated

collaboratively- but non-verbally. Ideas are written after the prompt of a previous idea and can be additions, deletions, or complete changes to existing ideas.

• Allows for equal participation from all members• Creates a place for all participants to express their ideas without

immediate commentary or criticism.

RUNNING THE EXERCISE: 1. Choose participants and organize group(s)

Select a team that has people who are both familiar with the issue at hand and those who are not to promote new perspectives.

2. Rd. 1 Pass worksheet out- keep quite- 5 mins on the clock Participants should write 3 ideas to fulfill the JTBD Pass paper to neighbor or put in the middle for random exchange

3. Rd. 2 Keep quite- 5 mins on the clock Participants write 3 new ideas to fulfill the JTBD based on the previous 3 ideas-
