The day after I started helping this man digthe well he told me to take my two horses two anda half miles up White Oaks Spring Canyon ·to thespring. It was the only watering hole; in that vicinityand the horses would have to come there for water.

We worked up to Saturday evening on thewell. The man told me that on Sunday I could rifemy race horse up to the spring and find my workhorses. I found the tracks and followed them in anortheast direction. It was slow tracking, and aboutnoon I stopped for lunch and tied my horse to grazein stirrup-high gramma grass.

I sat down on a rock which looked as if ithad "grown" out of the ground. After lunch I pickedup a stone and broke several pieces 'off the rock Jhad sat on. The broken pieces were yellow. I hadnever seen gold in a rock and I di.dn't know what itwas. I put a piece of the rock in ,my hip pocket andspend the rest of the afternoon hunting for my hors­es. I came back to camp down Coyote Canyon.

Thursday afternoon, my boss, who wasworking at the bottom of the well, asked if I hadheard about the new gold strike at the Old Abe inBaxter Mountain. I told him I found a mighty pret­ty piece of rock Sunday while I was looking for myhorses. "Send it down in the next bucket,H he said.

"You got this rock at the Old Abe?" the bosscalled up to me. I told him I'd never been to' the OldAbc. "C 'an you find the place where you got thisrock'!" the boss shouted. .

"What is itT' I shouted."'Gold!" he yelled. "Pull me up." .")' 11 go to the livery stable and get a horse,

and y<.)u take your race horse, and we'll ride outthere." the man said. '"First, we'll go to White OaksSpring, keeping track of your work team and followthe tracks of your race horse which has smallshoes."

We took that route and rode until it got dark.At daylight the next day we went back to that vicin­ity, put in the whole day, scarcely stopping to take adrink of water from the canteen. When night camewe still hadn't found the place, but I had found thepaper bag I had my lunch in Sunday, tbough it prob­ably had blown quite a ways from the rock.

We hunted every day for a week withoutresults. By that time news of the find had leaked out,and men were as thick out there as flies around apan of molasses. So many miners took off fromtheir jobs to hunt for the rock that the mines had toshut down.

A fier about two months the searchers gaveup. Then a peace officer in White Oaks said to me:

"I' II tell you what I'U do, I got a bunch ofgoats, I'll build a shanty and a corral. You run thosegoats on shares, hal f and half. Going over theground every day, following the goats, you'rehound to find the rock."

I accepted th~ proposition. I ran those goatsa year on shares and by that time I feld myself get­ting "batty" so I gave up the goats.

Andwhether it would have been as rich a gold strike asthe Old Ahe or the North and South HomestakeMines probably never will be known.
