LL.M. IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AND TRADE LAW

The LL.M. in International Business and Trade Law is designed for lawyers interested in the international law of trade, investment, finance, and other business transactions. Students will acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed for future careers in legal practice, consulting, and policy-making. Taught in Washington D.C. by prominent academics and practitioners, the LL.M. presents unique experiential learning and career opportunities.

The LL.M.’s core courses cover the fundamentals of trade regulation and negotiations under U.S., WTO and other international trade agreements, as well as international sales, transfer of technology, and other cross-border transactions. The key electives complement the core courses and cover certain focus areas, including U.S. trade remedies, sanctions and export controls, trade and investment, bilateral and regional trade agreements, e-commerce, trade in services and intellectual property, and currency and financial transactions. Students may also explore the linkages between trade, business and other areas of law, such as environment, human rights, labor, and gender.

The Program on Trade, Investment and Development Directed by Professor Padideh Ala’i, AUWCL’s Trade, Investment and Development Program (TID) promotes research and experiential learning of international trade law. TID invites world-renowned experts to teach in the LL.M. in International Business and Trade Law, or speak at AUWCL’s high-profile lectures and symposia. TID brings together trade alumni, practitioners, and policy-makers at networking events. TID offers a summer course on WTO law at the WTO headquarters in Geneva. The course is taught by WTO staff, and provides unique insight into the organization’s trade-related activities.

Externships & Careers Together with our LL.M. Career Counselor, TID’s faculty and staff are dedicated to assist students in locating trade-related externship and career opportunities. Students have in the past externed at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the International Trade Commission, the U.S. Court of International Trade, trade law firms in the U.S. and abroad, the WTO in Geneva, the World Bank, and other international organizations.

Optional Practical Training (OPT) Eligible international LL.M. students may apply for an OPT permit. This training will provide students with the possibility of obtaining practical work experience in the U.S. for up to one year after graduation.

New York Bar Track This LL.M. program provides foreign-educated law students with the courses required to qualify to sit for the New York bar exam. Foreign-trained LL.M. students must complete at least 12 credits of New York bar courses of the 24 credits needed for the LL.M. degree.
