THE STEPHEN J. REDDEN FAMILY OF WORCESTER COUNTY, MARYLAND

Stephen Vobn Redden of Worcester County, Maryland, was born December 21,

1817 and died September 11, 1901. He is buried in the Goodwill Methodist

Cemetery. He was the son of Nehemie^ Redden and his wife, Patsy Tarr Redden.

Mr. Mark C. Lewis of Parksley, Virginia, who has searched the records at Snow

Hill, Maryland, for information on the Redden and Pilchard families says,

L L "Nehemi a" Redden, son of old Nehemi a, married Patsy Tarr, January l8, l8l4, and

died testate in 1830, leaving all of his lands to his son Stephen. He did not

identify the lands, but the records do not indicate that he ever bought or

sold any lands in his lifetime. So, these lands must have been part of ABERDEEN

devised to him by his father. In confirmation of this conclusion, reference is

made to a deed dated 1844, whereby Patty Redden, widow of Nehemiah Redden, re¬

leased to her sons Purnell and William, all of her third (meaning her dower

interest) in the part of ABERDEEN which had belonged to her husband, Of course,

she could convey only her dower, or life interest, since the entire tract had

been devised to your grandfather, Stephen Redden. We know that the Nehemiah

Redden, who died in 1795> and the John Redden who passed away in 1801 were

brothers. The Peter Redden whose name appears did not leave a will, but it

appears likely that he was another brother. In Snow Hill I found nothing on

the Reddens prior to 1759> 'but there is probably something in Princess Ann."

I give unto my beloved wife Patsy Redden my old house and one Bed and furniture

in addition to her Right of dower.

Item. I give unto my son Stephen Redden all of my Land to him and his heirs for¬

ever and my Gun.

Item. I give unto my daughter Sally Blades one Red Chest and two Hogs of the

first choice.

Item. I give all the Remaining property after paying of my just debts to be

equally divided between my following children, Nehemiah Redden, Prunell Redden

Rosey Redden, William Redden, Elizabeth Ann Redden, and the child my wife now

carrys, and their heirs forever.

Lastly I constitute and appoint my friend Jacob Boston Joint Executor with my

wife, of this my last will and testament, confirming this as my last Will and

Testament in witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this second

day of June One Thousand Eight Hundred and Thirty.

STEPHEN JOHN REDDEN HAD TWELVE CHILDREN.

Stephen John Redden was born December 21, 1817. He was married twice.

His first wife was Elizabeth Paradise whom he married March 18, 1843* They

had four children. Thomas married Elizabeth Stout and lived in Asbury Park,

New Jersey. Alexander married and had two daughters, Martha and Lillie.

Louisiana (Anna) married Gordon Pilchard and lived in Salisbury, Maryland.

Gordon Pilchard and Louisiana Redden Pilchard had seven children, (l) Lenora,

(2) Betty, who married W. J. Payne, (3) Ada Belle, who married C. F. Trader.

Their children are Chauncey and Clifford, (4) William, whose sons are Walter

and Gilbert, (5) Bertha, who married Seiman. They have three sons, Edward,

Carl and William Seiman, (6) Consuela (Sula) married (a) John Davis and

(b) George Taylor, (7) Landownia, bom 1885; died July 15, 1957; married

Harvey Colonna. Oliva, the fourth child of Stephen and Elizabeth Redden,

married Benjamin Ward. They had three children, Charles, Carol and Doria

Ward.

The date of death of Elizabeth Paradise Redden has not been ascertained.

Stephen John Redden was married to Ellen Pilchard on January 1, 1855• Ellen

Pilchard was born May 13, 1837 and died December 8, 1928. She was the daughter

of Wrixham Pilchard of Worcester County, Maryland, and Ann Marshall of Acco¬

mack County, Virginia. They were married December 23, 1828. Wrixham Pilchard

is buried on the old Pilchard farm, now owned by Earl James Chaphe. His wife

Ruth Jean Stevens Chaphe, is a great-granddaughter of Stephen and Ellen Redden,

and a great-great-granddaughter of Wrixham and Ann Marshall Pilchard.

Stephen and Ellen Pilchard Redden had eight children, all of whom

lived to maturity, married, and had children of their own. They were, in order

of birth, John, Laura, William, Sallie, Hattie, Clemma, Stephen and Ella. A

record, with dates, follows. The completion of this project has entailed

correspondence with many people, till of whom have been cooperative and helpful.

JOHN FRANKLIN REDDEN

John Franklin Redden, the eldest son of Stephen John Redden and Ellen

Pilchard Redden, was born November 9, 1856. He died May 2, 193^ and. is buried

in the Outten graveyard on the Pilchard farm. He was married three times.

His first wife was Emma Frances Outten whom he married December 30, 1879* She c

was born in November 1857 and died June 11, 1887. John Franklin Redden and

Emma Frances Outten Redden had two daughters, Zellah May Redden and Sally ;

Outten Redden.

The second wife of John Franklin Redden was Mary Ellen Outten. They

were married January l6, 1889. Mary Ellen was born March 15, 1869 and died

September 30, 1913. There were four issue: Emma Francis Redden who was born

February 21, 1890 and died June 20, 1911; -An Infant, born September 17, 1892

and died October 31, 1892; Leslie Cleveland Redden, born August 2, 1894, died

February 7, 1945, and Ray Franklin Redden, born January 31, 1906.

John Franklin Redden married (3) Emma Tatman Tarr (w), April 28, 1915.

She was born March 28, 1876 and died March 27, 1953*

Zellah May Redden, eldest daughter of John Franklin Redden and Emma

Frances Outten, was born October 23, 1880. She was married twice. Her first

husband was George Upshur Howard who was born March 9, 1871. He died June 5,

1907« Tiiey were married November 8, 1898. Zellah May Redden Howard and

George Upshur Howard had four children: Gertrude Frances Howard; Emma Howard;

born December 1, 1900; died April 8, 1902; John Carson Howard, and Annie Gladys

Howard.

The second husband of Zellah May Redden Howard was Charles Edward

Coulbourne. They were married December 31, 19G8. He was born September 25,

1864 and died December 19, 1951. Zellah May Redden Howard Coulbourne and

Charles Edward Coulbourne had four children: Marvin Francis Coulbourne, born

December 7, 19^9 died October l6, 1912; Isabella Marie Coulbourne; Charles

Emerson Coulbourne, and Lawton Thurman Coulbourne.

Gertrude Frances Howard was "born September 9, 1899• She was married

to Walter Teagle Brown, January 5, 1919* He was born April 16, 1899• Walter

and Gertrude Brown have three sons; Walter Carl Brown, Howard David Brown, and

Richard Mervin Brown.

Walter Carl Brown was born August 26, 1920. Howard David Brown was

born January 7, 1922. He married Betty May Honey, April 27, 19^6. She was

born February 4,'1926. Howard and Betty Brown have two sons. Glenn Vaughn

Brown was born February 24, 1947. Gary Lee Brown was born November 21, 1948.

Richard Mervin Brown was born February 24, 1925* He married Jean

Eleanor Baylis, August 8, 1946. She was born July 7, 1927* Richard and Jean

Brown have one son, Richard Carl Brown, born March 23, 1955*

John Carson Howard was born January 25, 1903* He married (l) Pauline

Ella Skeeter, October 29, 1921. She was bom January 12, 1905 and died Feb¬

ruary 19, 1933. John Carson Howard and Pauline Ella Skeeter had two children,

Zellah Ray Howard and John Carson Howard, Jr.

John Carson Howard married (2) Mildred Taylor, February 15, 1934.

She was born January 11, 1912. John and Mildred Howard had one daughter,

Joyce Fay Howard, born November 10, 193^ •

Zellah Ray Howard, daughter of John Carson Howard and Pauline Ella

Skelters, was born February 19, 1923. She was married to Harry Edward Matthews,

August 24, 1940. He was born June 30, 1918. Harry and Zellah Matthews have

one child, Diane Matthews, born May 29, 19^2.

John Carson Howard Jr. was born May 13, 1925* He married Paula Ruth

Ward, June 9, 1946. She was born November 5, 1927* JQhn Carson Howard Jr.

and Paula Ruth Ward Howard have three daughters; Paula Ruth Howard, born June

17, 1947; Pamela Jean Howard, bom August l6, 1953, and Joyce Ellen Howard

born August 13, 1955*

Annie Gladys Howard, daughter of George Upshur Howard and Zellah May

daughter, Dorothy Ann Davis, born September 13, 1924. On September 24, 1949

Dorothy Ann Davis was married to Kenneth Milton Holland. He was born April 12,

1923* Kenneth and Dorothy Holland have one son, David Kenneth Holland, born

October 25, 1955*

Isabelle Marie Coulbourne, daughter of Charles Edward Coulbourne and

Zellah May Redden Howard Coulbourne, was born March 1, 1913* One April 13,

1942 she was married to Robert Parker Allen. He was born March 26, 1913*

Robert and Isabelle Allen have two sons, Thomas Charles Allen, born October

15, 1947 and Frederick John Allen, born November l8, 1950.

Charles Emerson Coulbourne was born May 23, 1914. On August 5, 1933,

he married Grace Hancock Cherrix. She was born February 22, 1915* Their

daughter, Shirley Ann Coulbourne, was born May 26, 1935* On March 27, 1954

she was married to George Rex Bromley. He was born February 5, 1933* Charles

Edwin Coulbourne, son of Charles and Grace Coulbourne, was born March 25, 1939*

Lawton Thurman Coulbourne, son of Charles Edward Coulbourne and his

wife, Zellah May Redden Howard Coulbourne, was born “July 20, 1916. On March

9, 1938 he married Dorothy Elizabeth Hunter. She was born November 28, 1919-

Their son, Morgan Hunter Coulbourne, was born February l4, 1939*

Sally Outten Redden second daughter of John Franklin Redden and Emma

Frances Outten Redden, was born September 9, 1882, and died March 3, 1919*

She married (l) Edgar A Payne. He was born September 2, 1873 and died January

22, 1902. Edgar and Sally Payne had one son, Fletcher Garland Payne, who was

born January 22, 1901 and died August 2, 1901. Sally Outten Redden Payne

married (2) Joseph Sidney Tarr on February 4, 1903* He was born July 4, 1874

and died October 24, 1938*

Joseph Sidney Tarr and Sally Outten Redden Payne Tarr had one daughter,

Elsie Myrtle Tarr, who was born February l6, 1905. On November 7, 1928 she

was married to Clinton Mills Brown who was born September 11, 1903.

Clinton and Elsie Brown have one daughter, Betty Jean Brown, who was

horn April 19, 1938* On June 23; 1956 she was married to Claude Wesley Drewer,

Jr.

Leslie Cleveland Redden, son of John Franklin Redden and Mary Ellen

Outten Redden, was born August 2, 1894. He died February 7; 1945* He married

(l) Marie Rose Sharpley on December 29; 1914. She was born June 14, 1895 and

died January 27; 1915*

Leslie Cleveland Redden married (2) Elizabeth Jane Hancock on October

26, 1917* She was born February 12, 1900. Leslie and Elizabeth Redden had

four daughters: Audrey Nadine Redden; Lois Virginia Redden; Norma Louise

Redden; and Jane Charline Redden.

Audrey Nadine Redden was born June l4, 1921. One June 2, 1940 she was

married to Earl Hall Wilson who was born January 31; 1920. Earl and Audrey

Wilson have three sons: Leslie Earl Wilson, bom May 8, 1941; Michael Allen

Wilson (twin) born November 13; 1955 and David Garry Wilson, (twin) born

November 13, 1955* (These are the only twins reported in this genealogy.)

Lois Virginia Redden was born February 20, 1924. On November 13, 1948

she was married to Seebern D. Bishop. He was born January 19, 1916. Seeborn

and Lois Bishop have two children, Leslie Frank Bishop, born June l4, 1953 and

Cathy Jane Bishop, born June 28, 1958.

Norma Louise Redden, daughter of Leslie and Elizabeth Redden, was born

February 9, 1931. On December 25, 1951 she was married to Joseph Gerald Gober.

He was born September 24, 1920. Joseph and Norma Gober have one daughter,

Elizabeth Karen Gober, born January 19, 1953*

Jane Charlene Redden was born December 4, 1935* On March 9, 1957 she

was married to George Albert Covington. He was born March 7, 1936.

Ray Franklin Redden, son of John Franklin Redden and Mary Ellen Outten,

was born January 31, 1906. He married Doris May Truitt on May 12, 1934. She

was born February 26, 1909. Ray and Doris Redden have two daughters; Mary Ellen

Redden, born December 27, 1937 and Ina Ray Redden, born May 25, 1946.

LAURA VIRGINIA REDDEN

Laura Virginia Redden, daughter of Stephen John Redden and Ellen Pilchard

Redden, was born October 13, 1858. She died November 5> 1920. On December 31 *

1873 Bhe was married to Robert H. Hancock. He was born January 22, 1852 and

died December 19, 1924. Robert and Laura Hancock had eight children: Cordelia

E.; Sallie Virginia; Lloyd G.; Raymond Fuller; Jesse Clifford; Laura May; Willie

Clarence; and Milton Stephen Hancock.

Cordelia E. Hancock was born March 25* 1875 and died June 11, 1909* On

December 8, 1898 she was married to Henry Washington Lambertson. He was born

March 15, 1877. Henry and Cordelia Lambertson had two children who died in

infancy. Jesse Granville Lambertson was born August 31> 1900 and died November

4, 1901. Laura E. Lambertson was born August 22, 1905 and died July 16, 1906.

Sallie Virginia Hancock, daughter of Robert and Laura Hancock, was born

January 9* 1877* She died in May 1944. On December 22, 1897 she was married

to Estee Ward. He was born July 19, 1874 and died September l6, 1930.

Estee and Sallie Ward had two daughters, Winnie Virginia Ward was born

March l6, 1902 and died January 2, 1903* Ethel Lee Ward was born November 28,

1903» She was married to Harrison Charles Denston on December 28, 1921. He

was born April 4, 1887.

Harrison and Ethel Denston had eight children: Harrison Frederick;

Ralph Ward; Dorothy Virginia; Infant Son; Kenneth Lee; Robert; Edward Wayne;

and William Francis Denston.

Harrison Frederick Denston was born April 29> 1923* Ralph Ward Denston

was born December 17, 1924. He married Dorothy Hill Northam on May 21, 1948.

She was born February 23> 1926. Ralph and Dorothy Denston have one son, Gregory

Wayne Denston who was born September 2, 1956.

Dorothy Virginia Denston, daughter of Harrison and Ethel Denston, was

born September 8, 1927. On May 14, 1948 she was married to Alfred Cecil Bowman.

He was born January 10, 1921. Alfred and Dorothy Bowman have two children,

1933. On April 26, 1905 he married Carrie Janette Martin. She was born April

9, 1883 and died October 20, 1938. Jesse Clifford Hancock and Carrie Janette

Martin Hancock had four children: Jesse. James Hancock; Mary Virginia Hancock;

Ella Louise Hancock; and Pearl Cornelia Hancock.

Jesse James Hancock was born March 14, 1906. On October 3, 1925 He

married Bessie Elizabeth Jones, who was born May l6, 1907. Jesse and Bessie

Hancock have one son, Charles Richard Hancock, who was born January 1, 1926.

Charles Richard Hancock married Irma Lee Mason, November 14, 1944. She

was born July 21, 1928. Charles and Irma Hancock have one daughter, Linda Lee

Hancock, born January 11, 1946.

Mary Virginia Hancock, daughter of Jesse Clifford Hancock and Canie

Janette Martin Hancock, was born July 30, 1908. She married (l) Clarence Edwin

Gravenor, August 11, 1927* He was born July 15, 1^99. Clarence and Mary

Virginia Gravenor had one daughter, Virginia Lee Gravenor, who was born May 6,

1928. Virginia Lee Gravenor was married to Walter George Caceres, July 26,

Mariana Burton was born December 23, 1929* On June 23, 1949 she was

married to John Charles McBride. He was born July l6, 1927* John Charles

Louise (Lulu) Ellen Burton was born August 1, 1910. On July 14, 1928

she was married to John Joseph Jones. He was born November 23, 1907* John and

Louise Jones have two children: John Joseph Jones, Jr. and Anita Louise Jones.

John Joseph Jones, Jr. was born August 22, 1933* On February 28, 1953

he married Helen Doris Malick. She was born April 25, 1935* John and Helen

Willie Clarence Hancock, son of Robert H. and Laura Redden Hancock, was

born November 22, 1892. On October 15, 1914 he married Nannie Paige Sharpley.

She was born August 17, 1893* Willie and Nannie Hancock had one son, Garland

John Hancock, born August 11, 1916; died September 5, 1916*

Milton Stephen Hancock, son of Robert H. and Laura Redden Hancock, was

born December 7, 1898. He married (l) Eva Virginia Mason. She was born July

13, 1901 and died April 3, 1954.

Milton and Eva Hancock had two daughters, Thelma Grace Hancock and

Barbara Ellen Hancock.

Thelma Grace Hancock was born September 29, 1919* She was married to

Frank A. Morris, October 4, 1945. He was born May l6, 1919•

Barbara Ellen Hancock was born November 17, 1925* On December 24, 1950

she was married to Frank Compton Ailstock. He was born December 26, 1924.

Frank and Barbara Ailstock have one son, Milton Stephen Ailstock, born August

14, 1953. Milton Stephen Hancock married (2) Dorothea Emily Maddon, June l8,

1955* She was bora July 9, 191®*

WILLIAM EDWARD REDDEN

William Edward Redden was born October 28, 1862 and died January 14, 1935*

He married Ida May Aydelotte on December 12, 1883. She was born June 28, 1862

and died May 11, 1922.

William and Ida Redden had five children, Nellie Bly Redden, Clyde Vernon

Redden, Milton Henry Redden, Wallis Aydelotte Redden and Maud Estelle Redden.

Nellie Bly Redden was born December 30, 1884. She was married (l) to

Orah Odell Tarr, February 15, 1905* he was born May 15, 1871 and died Februai'y

8, 1931. Nellie Bly Redden Tarr was married (2) to Raymond Arnold Shockley, on

November 7, 1931* He was born January 1, 1884.

1941; and Ada Virginia Tarr, who was born May 20, 1938.

Ada Virginia Tarr was married to Gordon Thomas Ward on January 29, 1955*

He was born November 1, 1925- The Ward!s have one son, Gordon Thomas Ward, Jr.

who was born January 28, 1956.

Ida Virginia Tarr was born November 24, 1918. She was married (l) to

Esley Lee Fleming on August l4, 1938. He was born December l6, 1918. She was

married (2) to Edward Smith Polyette, January 15, 1947. He was born March 20,

1915. Clyde Vernon Redden, son of William and Ida Redden, was born September

15, 1886. On January 10, 1910 he married Clara Jane Payne. She was born

September 19, 1885.

Clyde and Jane Redden had four children, Dorothy May Redden, born May 1,

1911, died July 6, 1913; Eloise Ida Redden, Clyde Vernon Redden, Jr., and

Pauline Ellen Redden.

Eloise Ida Redden was born September 16, 1917* She was married to Norman

Christy Mason on March 20, 1937* He was born January 9, 1916. Norman and

Eloise Mason have two children, Norman Christy Mason, Jr., born November 22,

1941 and Catherine Jane Mason, born June 25, 1946.

Clyde Vernon Redden Jr. was born December 30, 1920. On March 20, 1943

he married Doris Marie Powell. She was born October l8, 1917* Clyde and Doris

Redden have three children, Diane Jane Redden, born September 30, 1945J Barbara

Lynn Redden, born January 26, 1951, and Clyde Vernon Redden, III, born March 29,

to Harry Wilbur Tull. He was born May 14, 1897.

SARAH ELIZABETH SHREVES REDDEN

Sarah Elizabeth Shreves Redden was born on a farm near Pocomoke City,

Maryland, January 21, 1864. She died at Towson, Maryland, June 9, 1952. She

was married on October 11, 1891 to George Ernest Christian Uhrbrock, of Balti¬

more, Md. He was born September 12, 1864 and died at Towson, Maryland, July 9, 1944. Both George and Sarah Uhrbrock are buried in the Goodwill Methodist

Cemetery. They are survived (i960) by two sons, two granddaughters, and two

great-grandchildren.

Richard Stephen Uhrbrock, the first son of George and Sarah Uhrbrock,

was born in Baltimore, Maryland, August 4, 1894. He now resides at Athens, Ohio

where he is Professor of Psychology at Ohio University. On September 1, 1927; He

married Esther Lucilla Gatewood of MeConnellsvilie, Ohio. She was born in Nash¬

ville, Tennessee, November 7, 1893, and died at Sarasota, Florida, February 11,1956.

Elizabeth, Margaret was born at Ithaca, New York, July 10, 1928. She married

Earl Kidwell Schultz, Jr. of McMinnville, Tennessee, October 21, 1950. Earl

and Margaret Schultz have two children, Carol Ann, born July 26, 1951 anl

Stephen Neil, born July 27, 1955* The Schultz family lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

Ellen Elizabeth Uhrbrock was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, September 25,

1930. She resides at Menlo Park, California.

The second son of George and Sarah Uhrbrock, Walter Lee Uhrbrock, was

born in Philadelphia, Pa., September 16, 1903. He married Jennie Mae Bradford,

February 27, 1931. She was born December 13, 1910.

Melleon Vanderbilt Outten, the first daughter of Lloyd and Hattie Outten

was born February 7, 1887. She died February 8, 1958. She married Lloyd Frank¬

lin Trader, October 28, 1909. He was born August 13, 1865 and died March 5,

1936.

Harriet Grace Redden Outten and her daughter Melleon Vanderbilt Outten

Trader are buried in the Outten graveyard, located on the Pilchard farm.

Traynia Mayloy Outten, the second daughter of Lloyd and Hattie Outten,

was born May 21, 1888. She married Charles Fletcher Justice on December 21,

1909. He was born March 14, 1889 and died February 12, 1957*

Fletcher and Traynia Justice had three children. Cathel Louise was born

September 8, 1910. She married George Washington Tilghman on November 28, 1934.

He was born February 5, 1910. They have one son, George Fletcher Tilghman, who

was born July 3, 1939*

Clementine Mayloy Redden, daughter of Stephen John Redden and Ellen

married to Marion Harris Jones on April 10, 1889. He was born February 18,

1864 and died August 19, 1941.

Marion and Clementine Jones had six children: Horace Milton; Ernest

Conrad; Clayton Oliver; John Stephen; Louella Margaret, and Dorothy Elizabeth

Jones.

Horace Milton Jones married Vannie Grace Taylor December 23, 1924. They

have one son, Richard Elias Jones who was horn February l6, 1928. He married

Rose Marie Bishop on July l6, 1955*

Redden, was born October 20, 1872. He died April 6, 1950 and is buried at the

Goodwill Methodist Cemetery. He Married (l) Sadie A. Jones, November 9, 1898.

She was born August 28, 1872 and died May 16, 1899. He married (2) Emma Rebecca

Caulk, November 24, 1903. She was born October 20, 1879.

Stephen and Emma Redden had five children: Ruth Elizabeth; Percy Stephen;

Mollie Gertrude; Esther May Redden who was born June 2, 1912 and died October 27,

1912; Miriam Shreves Redden, born August 7, 1915, died January 9, 1924.

Ruth Elizabeth Redden was born November 22, 1904. She was married to

Otto Paul Schallon on June 5, 1923. He was born March 1, 1895. The Schallons

have one son, Richard Paul Schallon, who was born October 11, 1926.

Richard Paul Schallon married Anna Lorene Kitts on August 21, 1948. She

was born November 26, 1928. Richard and Anna Schallon have three children,

Percy Stephen Redden was born April 22, 1906. He married Ethlyn Mary

12, 1907 she was married to Charles Henry Coleburn of Greenbackville, Virginia.

He was born February 19, 1882 and died July 13, 1949-

Charles and Ella Coleburn had one daughter, Ellen Redden Coleburn. She

was born March 29, 1910* She was married to Paige DeCato Fisher on August 17,

1927. He was born December 9, 1903. The Fisher*s live at Oak Hall, Virginia.

They have four children, Virginia Caroline, Anna Gertrude, Shirley Paige and

Paige DeCato.

Virginia Caroline Fisher was born November 11, 1928. She was married

to William Long Trader on June 17, 1946. He was born April 17, 1928. William

and Virginia Trader have three children. Gwynne Ellen Trader was born February

3, 1947; Daniel Charles Trader was born August 14, 1949, and Edward Paige Trader

was born November 21, 1950*

Anna Gertrude Fisher was born June 20, 1934. She was married to Robert

Vernon Justice on August 10, 1952. He was born October 23, 1933* Robert and

Paige DeCato Fisher, Jr., son of Paige and Ellen Fisher, waB born July

It has taken six years to assemble this information. Without doubt it

is incomplete. There are a few dates missing. Probably births have occurred

that have not been recorded. It is interesting to consider that all the persons

in this record are related by blood or marriage, and that the record extends for

two hundred years, over seven generations, from 1759 to 1959 — from Nehemiah

Redden to his latest great-great-great-great-grandchild. Each blood relative

can figure out his own descent from Nehemiah and Patsy Redden, and his first,

second, and third cousins, as well as aunts, uncles, great-aunts, great-uncles,

etc.

Where did the Reddens live before 1759 when they came into Worcester

County, Maryland? Perhaps in Somerset County where Peter Redden lived. Perhaps

from Delaware. There is a town of Redden, and also Redden Forest in Delaware

My own theory is that the first Redden was a Dutchman in the Dutch Colony near

Newcastle, Delaware. However, that has not been verified.

The descendants of Nehemiah Redden are now scattered from Maryland to

California. Some families form an Association and appoint a Secretary who keeps

a list of names and addresses of related persons. That has never been done for

the Redden family. I shall be glad to start such a list if you care to send the

information to me.

Two suggestions have come out of this project of writing the genealogy

of the Nehemiah Redden family. It will help your children, and all of

descendants, if you will record Births, Marriages and Deaths in the, f^m e.

Zellah Coulbourne has the best kept Bible of any that I have seen.

point is to make a Will, naming all of your children in it, just as

Redden did.
