As I look up at our mountains, I’m amazed by the beautiful colors I see. The trees changing and the cooler weather are constant reminders

to me that the seasons are moving on and more time is passing. This great time of year makes me think a lot about what I’m grateful for and what I need to do to protect it. This month, I’d like to give you a few safety-minded tips that will hopefully keep us all in line.

Safe DrivingPretty soon kids will be filling up our streets, out and about trick-or-treating (or at the Legacy Center for the Halloween Party on October 24) and then out for a romp in the leaves or to play some ball before the snow flies. Make sure you slow down and focus on the road. There’s nothing more important than the safety of our little ones. Remember, honk if you love heaven, text while driving if you want to get there.

All of us will be better able to be safer drivers, if we follow the city rules regarding garbage cans. These can be a hazard and limit what we can see while we’re driving down the road. Please don’t put your trash can out until the night before pickup, and remember to bring

them in the same day it’s picked up. Citations can be given for not following this simple rule.

Frozen PipesSooner than ever, winter and cold temperatures will be upon us. Last winter, many people had problems with frozen or bursting pipes. I don’t need to tell you what a hassle and issue this could cause in your home. Remember that because Lehi City’s fire hydrants run off of the pressurized irrigation system, it is never shut-off during the winter. So, it’s especially important for all of us to winterize our sprinkling systems to protect our homes.

Family WeekI don’t think there’s anything we are more grateful for than families. So, don’t forget to join us this month as we celebrate and strengthen families. The City together with the Family Action Council will be putting on Family Week the week of Thanksgiving (November 23-29). It’s sure to be a great week as always. With that, have a great month, remember what you’re grateful for and make sure to protect it, and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

United Way of Utah CountyEveryDay Learners

In 2011, United Way of Utah County participated in a county assessment. While this assessment discovered that many aspects of life in Utah County are extremely positive, there were some findings that were troubling. Thiry percent of Utah County third graders were not reading at grade level. When children are not reading at grade level by third grade, they are four times as likely to drop out of high school—increasing their odds of unemployment, low income jobs, and even criminal activity. That’s why United Way of Utah County launched the EveryDay Learners movement. The EveryDay Learners movement is dedicated to increasing our community involvement in education, starting with helping every child get the support they need to read. Now, just three years later, only 20% of Utah County third graders are reading below grade level. This is a huge improvement, but there is still a long way to go. You can join the EveryDay Learners movement and help improve the odds for our kids. It’s easy to be an EveryDay Learner; all you need to do is take advantage of everyday opportunities to read and learn together. These opportunities include reading with your children every day, including neighborhood friends in your trips to the library, or starting a reading group in your neighborhood. You can even spread the word about education and EveryDay Learners on social media! As EveryDay Learners, we can work together to keep our community vibrant through advocating for education. To join the movement or to learn more, please visit www.everydaylearners.org or call 801-691-5371.
