WELCOME For me, the child always comes before the system. Trained in the state sector and Head of a private school, yet feeling that education was stifling children’s natural love of learning, I felt there must be a better way to experience school.

Having found this wonderful location and meeting with other talented teachers who also felt similarly constrained, I embarked on a journey to explore other teaching methods and ideologies.

After much research I took the best of what I had seen to create the unique, happy and successful learning environment that is Llangattock School Monmouth.

We attract children from every walk of life; from the academically gifted to the more practically minded. Small groups with an inclusive ethos provide each child with individual attention personalised to the particular child’s needs.

Our goal is to enable every child to have a positive experience of childhood and education, growing into the unique adult he or she can be, with a secure and positive self-image

Education should lead every child to feel that there are no constraints on what they can achieve.

At Llangattock School Monmouth we provide a ‘home from home’ where your child will feel safe, happy and stimulated; free to explore the world around them and grasp their own potential.

We are privileged to work in a beautiful, rural environment with experienced and enthusiastic staff who love what they do.

Taking the partnership approach, we look to build your child’s future on firm foundations. Joanna ChickHEAdMISTRESS

The staff are very supportive and give the children what they need to be relaxed in their environment. My son has said how nice it is to go to school and enjoy learning. I would recommend it to anyone. A fantastic school. PARENT

We are small by design with up to 100 pupils broadly divided into three groups; Nursery/Foundation, Lower and Upper School. Lessons are taught vertically, meaning that should your child be particularly gifted or interested in particular subjects they are encouraged to develop their talents without limit. Here you may see a child of 7 with a high reading age enjoying a lesson alongside 10-year olds or a more mature student catching up alongside younger learners. In addition to the full range of subjects, we enhance the children’s experiences with weekly Philosophy discussions and a wide range of trips and workshops. We like native speakers to teach modern foreign languages and

every child is encouraged to perform and speak on the stage. Learners with any additional academic or social needs are supported by experienced mentors and included as fully welcomed members of the school community. The school stands on 6 acres of playing fields, wild flower meadows and trees, providing a stunning backdrop to learning.

NURsERy Our Nursery education covers the age range from 2-7 years and incorporates the Foundation Stage from 4-7 years. Its essence is inspired by the Montessori philosophy, that children learn best through practical experiment and experience. Even from a young age, children choose their own preferred medium in their quest for knowledge and your child’s voice is central to informing our planning. Music and stories sit happily alongside games, physical and creative play, encouraging early literacy and numeracy concepts as well as building skills for learning such as memory and perseverance. As an all-through school, our younger learners benefit from access to specialist teachers from Upper School and are encouraged to ‘have a go’ at all sorts of activities. Early signs of talent are identified and nurtured by authentic experts in their field. All this in the cosy family atmosphere created by our warm, dedicated staff.

“Not only has my child thrived and grown here, the whole Montessori team have become part of our family. I feel we have all been learning together. PARENT

LOWER sChOOL Lower School covers the age range from 7 to 11. As a Montessori-inspired setting, the timetable is kept flexible; learning need not be interrupted if the children are fully absorbed in an activity, leading to deeper understanding and engagement. Building on the firm early years foundation, children enjoy a broad skills-based curriculum with an emphasis on creativity, music and outdoor learning alongside traditional academic subjects. Pupils have a class teacher responsible for the overall curriculum who is the first point of contact for parents, but in

addition they are taught by specialist teachers who enjoy bringing their subjects, such as French, Art and Classics, to life. At Llangattock we take the learning outside, connecting basic skills with practical application. Gardening and Forest School are key parts of the timetable.

A particular strength of the school is the comprehensive knowledge staff have of the needs of every pupil, and how they use this information to provide high levels of care, support and guidance...” ESTYN INSPECTORS’ REPORT

UppER sChOOLUpper school takes pupils from age 11 up to GCSE and beyond. We believe that education should fit the child, not the other way round. As children mature, we have found that by taking increased control of their own learning, they gain a stake in their future, and reach their full potential with their wellbeing intact. They are encouraged to discuss their skills and aspirations, creating a picture of their future. Choosing particular pathways to match their goals, some accrue a large number of GCSEs over several years, while others concentrate on a more bespoke set of

qualifications fitted to their strengths. Parents, students and staff collaborate to ensure an individualised programme that also provides a range of ongoing study options post-16. Most of our students go on to local sixth form colleges, although there is the option to stay on for A levels and University entrance with us if required.

The change we have seen in just a few months has been incredible. Our son has become more outgoing, ready to learn, and has a far greater sense of worth...” PARENT OF A NEW PUPIL

a LEVELs While most pupils move on after GCSEs, some may prefer not to attend local sixth form provision. For these pupils, we can offer a bespoke package usually combining a mix of tutoring, self-study and practical experience as well as assistance to gain entry to higher education establishments.

fLExI- sChOOLINgFlexi-schooling is the term used for children who attend school part-time. Whether you are wanting to partly home-educate your child, or are looking for a phased introduction to schooling, we have a range of flexible options to suit your needs. We offer part-time places across the whole age range so you can choose whole days, or specific subjects to fit around your requirements.

Our approachWe are totally committed to enabling each child to grow and achieve to the best of their personal ability, delighting in their unique personality and talents.Mutual respect is at the heart of everything we do. In that spirit we have one, simple, rule:

‘Be yourself, but not to the detriment of anyone else’.

Our missionWe encourage the development of the whole child by providing a truly personalised holistic

education, cultivating awareness of the outside world, empathy for others, social ease and self-confidence leading to academic success.

Our ethosWe provide education in a comfortable environment where everyone can achieve at their appropriate pace. With expert support, students accrue qualifications and skills that best reflect their innate ability and interests. We support families in their choice of education to enable healthy transition to adulthood in a trusting partnership between child, parents and our organisation.

Wellbeing is our first goalWe aim to provide a safe, stress-free and non-judgemental environment that absolutely celebrates each unique child. Engagement is our second goalWe aim to give each child access to teachers with enthusiasm and expertise in each subject who can inspire our pupils. We try to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge through the preferred learning style of each individual. Vertical grouping allows children to access the curriculum at an

appropriate level, so that they can review previous learning or stretch forward according to their level of confidence and ability.

academic achievement is our third goalWe encourage children to recognise their true potential and aim high to achieve academic success. We respond to the resulting engagement in learning by enabling them to accrue a set of qualifications specific to their abilities and talents, aiming for an appropriate level of challenge and high expectations for their future.

school historyLlangattock School was built in 1870 by John Rolls, father of the pioneer aviator Charles Rolls of Rolls Royce fame. during the war the building was home to over a hundred children, and it remained open as the Village School until 1991. The fi rm gifted us a unique model of Charles Rolls and the family retain strong links with the school. They also allow us the use of their crest and motto‘Celeritas et Veritas’ (Nimble & True). We interpret it as a willingness to try and a determination to identify and express the truth in every situation.

I came to Llangattock School when I was 16 and had no academic qualifications whatsoever. 3 years later I left with 7 GCSEs, 4 A levels, and a place at Swansea University. Learning

at Llangattock helped me to build my confidence and allowed me to study at my own pace under the guidance of friendly and supportive tutors, which was exactly what I’d needed. I have now completed my BA in English Literature and am looking forward to graduation! JK

I have just graduated university with a first class honours in Business Management with Law and am due to start a career in conveyancing. Llangattock was a dream of a school that

enabled me to work at my own pace. It was a happy, friendly environment where you knew that the staff cared. Bd

Llangattock was an incredible experience for me, the small group and friendly environment really developed my confidence and built relationships I have kept for the eleven years since leaving. My

time in the school was the best possible preparation for moving into secondary school, and enabled me to win an academic scholarship to Haberdashers Monmouth School for Girls. Since then I have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Bath, during which I worked in a neuroscience lab in Rome for a year. I am now in the process of applying for Phd positions, both in the UK and abroad. EW

My time at Llangattock has, and continues to, impact me in positive ways far beyond what I could have ever anticipated. During those formative years, the school and its staff firmly instilled in me a lifelong love of learning that withstood the proceeding years of exam oriented study; as I have progressed, I have realised how much of a gift this has been. The quality of individual attention, encouragement to seek and excel in my own areas of interest, and a sincere commitment to the joy of education are the core foundations of Llangattock’s ethos, and ones that I have kept with me my entire academic career. Currently studying Social Anthropology at Cambridge University, I have often found myself drawing parallels between the two experiences; the keen interest and support from my tutors in my personal academic journey here directly mirrors the treatment I received as an eight year old girl at Llangattock. I feel incredibly lucky to have had such a fantastic beginning to my education. TA

My time at Llangattock school is still such a pleasant and prominent memory. What made it so special for me was how much self expression was encouraged. I think that this concept is

lost in most school environments which is a real shame. Seeing so many people being themselves without necessarily being restricted or feeling insecure was really nice to see. FW

I began at Llangattock School when I left primary school at the age of 11 to be home schooled. I took part in lessons a couple of days a week, as well as having the opportunity to volunteer in the

nursery, as that is where my passion lies. I always felt part of a loving family whenever I was at school, from the students already there, the school staff, to the nursery. Everyone valued me for who I was and I felt completely relaxed and comfortable to be myself. Attending the school enabled me to complete my GCSE’s, nursery experience and gain interview skills which all contributed to being lucky enough to attend The Chiltern College to train to be a professional Nanny. It is still an absolute pleasure to visit the school, and has been lovely to see children in my care as a nanny follow me in attending the school. SF

I am a qualified tennis coach and a sports and activity leader, both of which my passions were discovered and first started at Llangattock. This helped me gain different experiences and pursue

the industry I am now in. GE
