Director's Message

The 2015 driving season is off to a rousing start. Our challenge will be to keep it going. To this end,

we will need volunteers to step forward and lead driving tours in the coming months. I urge you to

pick a destination from the list and plan a tour. If you need help let me know. Let's keep the

momentum going.

Our club was well represented at the 2015 Michigan Round Up in Holland, Michigan. We had 34

club members in attendance and 15 Model A's. All who made the trip had a good time. Many

pleasant life long memories were formed. Holland is an interesting place. There was plenty to see

and do. The tulips were beautiful. The windmill was complete with WWII bullet holes.

It is interesting to note that none of the twenty Michigan clubs volunteered to host the 2016

Michigan Round Up. It is my understanding that the Jackson Club, the Spartan Horns, will host the

2017 event. Next year we may not have a round up but the Script A's have agreed to host the

National Membership Meet in April of 2016 in Grand Blanc, Michigan. Plan on attending that event.

Also the 2016 National Meet will be close by in Perrysburg, Ohio, near Toledo.

Remember, on June 6th we will have our Model A front end and steering seminar beginning at 10:00

am at the home of John and Jan Haskin, 8550 Riverside Dr, Brighton , Mi. Bring a chair, something

to drink, and a dish to pass. The club will provide hamburgers. Ladies are very welcome to attend.

On June 27 and 28, 2015, an overnight driving trip is being planned to Bay City. We will be visiting

the USS Edson, a decommissioned US Navy Destroyer. The next day we will visit the antique shops

along the river in downtown Bay City. It would be fun traveling with you. Hope you can make it.

----MAY MINUTES----

Director Fred Tryles called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. . 42 members were present .

SECRETARYS REPORT:

A motion to accept the minutes from the April meeting and the motion was passed.

TREASURER’S REPORT:

Judy Coebly read her report. Judy reminded us that those not wearing badges or shirts with names would pay

a $.25 fine. Tonight the 50/50 of $32 was won by Karin Guinan. We still have 7 members that need to pay

dues. A motion to accept the report was passed.

OLD BUSINESS:

OB1: Michigan Round-Up was held May 14th-16. 34 members attended the Round-Up. A big THANK YOU

to Fred and Sandy Tryles for organizing and leading the group. Receiptant of the table arrangement were Bea

Thibodeau, Jean Sherman,Dea Knopf and Shirley Hammermeister.

John Haskin won the hard luck award and fudge he also won the tune up kit in the raffle. Bea Thibodeau won

wooden shoe prize from the raffle. Judy Coebly won the puzzle in the raffle. Mike DeLuca won a lamp and an

afghan from the raffle.

OB2: George DeAngelis Memorial Service will be held on May 22 at 11:30a.m. Leaving from Target parking

lot at Owen Road/US 23 at 10:00 a.m. We have 15 cars that will be attending and 2 cars from Script A’s. A

lunch will be held at Holly Hotel and the main street will be closed for the Model A’s to park.

OB3: Hartland’s 80th Memorial Day Parade. Meet by 10 a.m to be in parade. Parade to be held rain or shine.

Picnic following the parade bring a dish to pass. Contact Gary Cornillaud for additional information.

OB4: Fair Lane Henry Ford’s home. Leaving Howell McDonald’s (Grand river & Latson road) at 9:30 a.m.

arriving at Fair Lane approximately 11 a.m. Please pack a picnic lunch and bring chairs as there is no

restaurant on the grounds. Tour will cost $12 and take 1 ½ hours. Wearing vintage or era clothes is

encouraged.

OB5: Front End & Steering Seminar by Mark Campagnoli will be held June 6 at 10am. at John and Jan Haskin’s

home. Please bring a dish to pass drinks and a chair.

OB6: USS Edson in Bay City trip will be held June 27. A show of hands has made this a overnight trip. Sandy

Tryles will look into lodging for the night. More information to follow.

OB7: Gary Cornillaud passed around work-up of the proposed business cards for suggestions.

NEW BUSINESS:

NB1: Dea Knopf is taking orders for Royal Blue polo style shirts with our name and logo on it. The more

shirts we order the better the price will be.

NB2: Perry Points received an award for his newsletter from Ross Milne Director of Regions. Perry puts out a

first class newsletter every month. Thank you Perry for all your hard work!!!

NB3: Le Concours de Livingston will be held August 1 at Whispering Pine in Pinckney 3 p.m.-7 p.m..

NB4: 5th annual Model A Day to be held at Gilmore. Sept 18-19. Seminars will be given by Les Andrew, Mike

Keeting , Tom Wessenburg as well as others.

NB5: Model A parts can be purchased at Auto zone. Some points,condenser and rotors are some of the parts

you could purchase. Fred Tryles has part number if you need further information.

NB6: Dick Knopf will get further information on a 80 acre site of old cars.

NB7: Bea Thibodeau wants to thanks those that have contributed to Arise Church Christmas child shoe box.

NB8: Gary and Jan Cornillaud attended Howell Opera House program on Haven Hill it was well attended.

NB9: Dea Knopf sent out a U-Tube video filmed at Holland Round-Up featuring Dea, Judy Coebly and Jan

Cornillaud.

NB10: Bill Miller has photos of Model A his friend is selling. See Bill for more information.

NB11: SUNSHINE COMMITTEE: Vic and Cheryl Caporosso will be getting 2 more grandchildren this November

& December.

NB12: CAR PROBLEMS: John Haskin has a problem with his clutch. Ed Thibodeau had a radiator that came

unsoldered. Dea Knopf has a problem with her shift tower. Paul Frisinger has 4 - 21 inch tires and a heavy

duty radiator he no longer needs. Please call Paul for information. Marty Kapanowski has a car in pieces and

would like help.

NB13: BIRTHDAYS: May Birthdays are Ken Maninen, Rick Guinan. May anniversays are John and Jan Haskin

and Rick and Karin Guinan.

NB14: Treats: Our treats tonight are thanks to Frank Remenar , Judy Coebly and Cheryl Caporosso. Next

months treats will be Caroline Smith , Beverly Points and Ken & Marianne Manninen.

Editor's Corner

May was another busy and fun month for us at Livingston A's. The trip to Holland went well except for Jan

and John Haskin. Part way there, John and Jan had to reverse course due to a malfunction on their 1929

Closed Cab Pick-up. The fingers that push on the throw out bearing refused to do their part. They returned

home and with the Pick-up put away, proceeded to Holland in a modern vehicle.

They arrived late, and were given a room that had been fumigated recently. John quickly found out that his

body did not react pleasantly to the chemical residue in the room. John then resorted to sleeping in the cold

can , parked in the hotel parking lot.

The return trip also went well with NO road side seminars.

With all of that said. the rest of the weekend went well and we all had a great time at the State Round-up in

Holland, MI

BUYING THE FARM This is synonymous with dying. During WWI soldiers were given life insurance policies worth

$5000. This was about the price of an average farm, so, if you died, you "bought the farm". for your

survivors. In WWII, and the Korean War, the insurance amount was raised to $10,000. The expression,

"bought the Farm" was still being used.

June 6th The Pere Marquette 1225 Steam Train will leave Mt Pleasant at 9 a.m. for Cadillac where you will have

4 hours to tour the Back-to-the-Bricks Car Show. Returning to Mt Pleasant at 7 p.m. Price for economy class

is $49 plus $5 processing fee. Coach is $99 plus $5 processing fee. Caboose is $129 plus $5 processing fee.

June 13-14th Marion Township 8th Annual Heritage Days. Saturday, 9a.m.-10 p.m. w/steam engines, antiques

tractors, fire station/fire trucks on display and a “Spark Show” at dark. Sunday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.. w/pancake

breakfast 8-11 a.m.,antique & classic car show 9 a.m.. Trophies will be awarded at 4 p.m. $10 to enter your car

first 50 entrees will receive a dash plaque.

June 21-27 MARC National Meet in Niagara Falls, Ontario

June 27 USS Edson in Bay city overnight trip. Sandy and Fred Tryles will get further information.

JULY

July 4th Gregory Parade with BBQ following at Dick and Dea Knopf home please bring chairs. Meet at

Pinckney McDonald 10 a.m..

July 11th Standish Car Show. Standish Historical Deport & Welcome Center invite Model A’s and Model T’s to

its 4th Annual Car Show for all 1931 and older cars. Register before July 5th and the cost is $5 after the 5th

the cost will be $10 and lunch and ice cream social will be free to pre-registered vehicles. Show is 10 a.m. to 4

p.m. awards to the best of show and top 50 vehicles.

AUGUST

August 1ST Ribfest at Jan and John Haskin’s home details to follow.

August 1st Le Concours de Livingston to be held at Whispering Pine in Pinckney 3-7p.m..

History of Father's Day in US

Modern version of Father's Day celebration originated in United States of America and

thereafter the tradition spread in countries around the world. The world owes thanks to Ms

Sonora Louise Smart Dodd a loving daughter from Spokane, Washington as it is because

of her struggle that Father's Day saw the light of the day.

The idea of Father's Day celebration originated in Sonora's mind when she per chance

listened to Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Fairly mature at the age 27, Sonora pondered if

there is a day to honor mother then why not for father? Sonora felt strongly for fathers

because of the affection she received from her own father Mr William Jackson Smart, a Civil

War veteran. Sonora's mother died while childbirth when she was just 16. Mr Smart raised

the newborn and five other children with love and care.

Inspired by Ms Anna Jarvis's struggle to promote Mother's Day, Ms Dodd began a rigorous

campaign to celebrate Father's Day in US. The Spokane Ministerial Association and the local

Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) supported Sonora's cause. As a result Spokane

celebrated its first Father's Day on June 19, 1910. Though there was initial hesitation the idea

gained gradual popularity all over US and Fathers Day came to be celebrated in cities across

the country.

Another Source for Model A Ford Ignition Parts

Well, sometimes as much as I complain about using a computer, it does have its advantages. The Model A hobby has

some very good parts suppliers, but every so often I search the internet for other sources that may be closer to home. Of

course, if you live in Ohio (Snyders) or New York (MACS) or Maryland (Brattons) or Georgia (Mikes A-Ford-able) or

California (Sacramento Vintage), then you have your vendors close to home. The rest of us have to use on-line ordering

or the phone to purchase our parts for our Model A’s and wait for them to arrive.

I found a new source for a few Model A Ford ignition parts. The name is Auto Zone. I have one in my neighborhood.

The other day I was surfing their website looking at their latest products and what they offer (I usually buy my engine oil

and chemicals from my local Auto Zone), and I came across some Model A Ford ignition parts to my surprise.

So, I paid my local Auto Zone a visit, and after looking up these few parts with the help of the counter salesman on the

store’s computer, I discovered that they are indeed available, and in most cases if they don’t have it in stock, they can get

for you in 1 to 2 days without paying shipping charges (delivered to the store for your pick-up).

The Model A Ford Ignition Parts that are available through Auto Zone are listed below.

We have many large photo albums depicting events since the beginning of our club in 1980. If you are interested in borrowing any of these to browse and if you take any pictures you would like to be included, please let Dick Weaire know. He is now the keeper of these books. The albums as well as an event history were created and maintained by Lucille Duke from 1980 until 2004.

The Livingston A’s have four tables and two large ice chests available for club members to borrow.
