Dear Club Members:We continue to make tremendous strides with many property improvements occurring around the Club. At last month’s Member and Manager’s reception I relayed many of these improvements. Below is an update on the progress of some of these improvements:

• Repairs to the concrete walkways around the indoor pool area will be completed the first week of February.

• The indoor pool roofing replacement project has begun and we are presently removing the old tiles and preparing the area for dry in. During this dry in process, the indoor pool will be closed for safety reasons. We anticipate re-opening the indoor pool toward the end of the first week of February as we await the arrival of the tiles and installation to begin in March.

• Resurfacing of the lower family pool at the Fantasy Pool Complex has begun with an anticipated completion the first week of February.

• The Kids Crew activity room is being refurbished with new flooring, new LED lighting and paint, which will be a nice enhancement of this area.

• A painting contractor has been secured and repair and painting of the lower walls at the South Tower pool courtyard area has begun with an anticipated completion in 4 to 5 weeks.

• The roof replacement of the Phase 1 tower is progressing nicely and is on schedule to be completed in June.

• Additional capital improvement projects are planned throughout 2019 to further improve the Club at Hammock Beach for our members.

• Guidelines regarding the Food & Beverage minimum has been posted on the member website under Club -> Membership Documents and Forms -> Membership Forms or Click here to view.

I have received many encouraging comments from many of our members concerning our improvement projects and progress we have made, it is making a positive impact on our facility and the experience that we provide for our members and guests.

We encourage you to enjoy all of the festivities planned in February beginning with Super Bowl Sunday in Loggerheads, Valentine Dinner Dance and the Great American Race – Daytona 500 in Loggerheads. Please check the member website for details.

Sincerely,

BRAD HAUER, PGA General Manager

Thank You from the Flagler County Free ClinicThe Flagler County Free Clinic was established

in 2005 to provide free medical care to the

uninsured and low-income members of our

community. Our services are sustained through

the generosity of private sector donors, fund-

raising events, grants and the commitment of

one-hundred community volunteers.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Club at Hammock Beach for the incredible support that they have provided the Flagler Free Clinic through the annual “Wine and Art” event. In 2018 the proceeds from the event was used to provide testing materials for our diabetic patients who otherwise would not be able to afford the high cost of meters and test strips. The proceeds from the 2016 and 2017 events covered the cost of office supplies for a full year.

Your generosity and support are so appreciated, it is organizations like the Club at Hammock that ensure that the Free Clinic can continue providing much needed service to our fellow community members.

Terri Belletto Executive Director Flagler County Free Clinic

February Golf Tip by Jeff Hager, Head Golf Professional

If you want to be a great putter, the key to success is to have great speed control. Simply, it makes no sense to practice only aim, when the speed your ball rolls is the main factor determining line. Here is a great drill to help develop your speed control on the greens. Also, with proper speed

Right Hand Middle Drill:

The right hand middle drill is a wonderful way to achieve distance control on long lag putts. Because your right hand and fingers play such an important role in how you feel distance, this drill is a great way to develop touch.

Here is how the drill works: Take ten balls and place them in the middle of the green. Mark the spot from where you are putting from with a tee. Take a comfortable stance and grip the putter with your right hand only. After that, putt the first ball with just your right hand at a spot on the fringe of the practice green. Your goal is to get the ball to stop as close to the fringe, without actually touching it, as you can. Take the second ball and, using the same technique, putt to a spot about five yards right

of your first ball. Again, you want it as close as possible to the fringe without touching it. Continue this all the way around the green until your last ball has been putted. When you’re done putting the balls to the fringe, walk to your golf balls and putt them back to the tee. Make sure you’re still using just your right hand. One lap around the green with ten balls is considered a set. Do a couple sets a week when practicing.

** Tips — Use your eyes. Focus on the fringe and let your eyes determine how hard to hit the ball. Also, feel your entire arm swinging — not just your hand and wrist. This drill will help players of all skill levels achieve better pace on their putts which will lead to less 3 putts. Practice this and start to watch your scores get lower and putts per round to decline as well. Happy Practicing!!

When on Defense, move Diagonally by Katsiaryna Lukomskaya, Head Tennis ProfessionalMany times, we find ourselves chasing a ball down and hitting defensive shots in both singles and doubles. Proper preparation which involves correct positioning can lead you to performing great defensive shots allowing you to stay in the point longer or even turn the point around.

A typical mistake when chasing down a deep shot or a lob, involves the player moving parallel with the baseline. When moving sideways for a deep shot, we rob ourselves of time which prevents us to position properly resulting in loss of balance, not contacting the ball out in front, and a shortened follow through. (WRONG 1-4)

One of the best ways of preparing for a deep shot would be to move on a diagonal away from the baseline. That way we gain more time and are able to set up properly for the shot. By moving diagonally, you position yourself behind the ball which allows you to hit the ball in front of you resulting in a controlled and sometimes offensive shot. (RIGHT 1-4)

Working Out While Sick: Good or Bad?By Donna M Gialone, Personal Trainer/Spin Instructor/Nutrition Counselor

Engaging in regular exercise is an excellent way to keep your body healthy. It’s a known fact that working out has been shown to decrease the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, help keep weight in check and

boost the immune system. While there is no doubt that exercise plays an important role in health, many people wonder if working out while sick will help or hinder their recovery.

A speedy recovery is always the goal when you are sick, but it can be hard to know when it’s ok to power through with your normal gym routine and when it’s best to take a few days off.

Working out with the following symptoms is most likely safe, but always check with your doctor if you are unsure.

When is it Safe to Exercise - It’s most likely alright to work out when you are experiencing a mild cold, earache, stuffy nose or sore throat, as long as you’re not experiencing more serious symptoms.

When Exercise Is Not Recommended – If you are experiencing symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea or a productive cough, taking time off from the gym may be the best option for both your own recovery and the safety of others.

When Is It Ok to Return to Your Routine? Waiting until symptoms completely subside before gradually getting back into your workout routine is a safe way to return to exercise after an illness.

The Bottom Line - When experiencing symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, fever or a productive cough, it’s best to rest your body and take some time off from the gym to recover. However, if you caught a mild cold or are experiencing some nasal congestion, there’s no need to throw in the towel on your workout. If you are feeling well enough to work out but lack your usual energy, reducing the intensity or length of your workout is a great way to stay active. To stay healthy and safe when you’re sick, it’s always best to listen to your body and follow your doctor’s advice.
