Feeling disconnected from nature? Worried your family members are

turning into couch potatoes? New Westminster Parks, Culture & Recreation is encouraging families to enjoy the Naturally Fun programs and play spaces in our community. We are working towards a practice that supports creating natural play structures and opportunities that reflect the research on the linkages between human development and creative play and we’re encouraging everyone to get outside and enjoy the fun!

Choosing to play in natural environments increases the diversity of what we encounter. Having more variety encourages children to use imaginative and creative play that nurtures language and collaborative skills.

Farm Hands (see page 51) is a free opportunity for youth to work with animals and learn about farm life.

Younger children can learn about bees and beekeepers and explore Irving House’s heritage garden in What’s the Buzz About Bees? (see page 46). Studies have shown that spending time in nature can reduce stress and benefit treatment of numerous health conditions (Kahn, 1999).

Naturally FunIN NEW WESTMINSTER

Naturally FunIN NEW WESTMINSTER

The fun isn’t only limited to children. Parents can play outdoors alongside their children in Little Gardeners (see page 33) which stimulates all aspects of child development more readily than indoor environments (Moore & Wong, 1997).

Get out of the gym and exercise outdoors with our walking club for ages 50+ at Century House, Walking With Janice (see page 67) or one of our family-friendly Jane’s Walks exploring downtown New Westminster and the Brow of the Hill (see pages 78 & 79). Studies show that people who exercise outdoors in natural settings feel more restored and less anxious or angry than those who jog indoors (Voiland, 2008).

The world is a different place than when we were kids and we realize there are some dangers outdoors but we need to get outside and let our kids take risks. We see increased self-confidence, better body image and cognitive benefits. Kids who spend more time outdoors tend to do better on testing; they do better on science; they tend to play more cooperatively (Voiland, 2008).

We can do much of this together and it doesn’t need to be a structured program. Throw some snacks into a backpack and go on a short hike in one of our local parks, take the dog out and meet some new friends in our beautiful dog parks or go on a nature scavenger hunt. Bad weather? Set up a bird feeder and try urban birding, garden on your windowsill or plant flowers that attract butterflies and bees. Keep checking for more naturally fun opportunities in your community.

LET THERE BE LIGHT! ELECTRIC LIGHT, THAT IS

Assigning a date to an old photo can be a challenging task. However, photographs of street views offer a number of clues. Are horses, streetcars, buses or cars visible? We know that streetcars first appeared on Columbia Street in 1891. City buses appeared in 1937. Also do the names of businesses appear on signs and storefronts? These businesses can be looked up in directories to see what years they operated, helping to narrow the date range.

As 2016 will be the 125th anniversary of the New Westminster Electrical Utility, it is a fitting time to show how we can use changes in street lighting to date photographs.

On January 2, 1891, Columbia Street was illuminated for the first time by electric light. Judging by the photos of the time, the lights were suspended above the street from wooden poles. These lights are easy to overlook in photographs. However, if one appears, then the photograph cannot be dated any earlier than 1891.

In 1909 City Council authorized a series of improvements to Columbia Street. This included replacing the lights and wooden poles with ornamental cluster lamps at street level manufactured by Schaake Machine Works, a New Westminster business. These lamps were in place by 1910.

By the early 1930s, a new “candle” style lamp standard appears on Columbia Street. These lights were removed around 1950 and the first modern light standards appear for the first time.

Street lighting for Christmas appears as early as 1965. Stuart Gifford appears in a photo, hand on the switch, having just turned on the lights which appear behind him. The lighting design includes a crown, symbol of the Royal City. A new style of decorative light standards was also introduced at this time.

Despite all the changes, what’s old is new again, as the present street level light standards are similar to the Schaake 1910 lamps.
