The nuance of the names created for the swatches of colours red and orange are poetic and evocative, thus making them invigorating, warm and above all cheerful.

As one of the three primary colours, red inspires strong and conicting feelings. It notably symbolizes passion, re, power, battle, prohibition and determination. A blazing colour, it is also synonymous with luxury and elegance.Obtained by mixing red and yellow, orange evokes positive concepts such as loyalty, trust and radiation. Bright and warm, this secondary colour is more daring and extravagant than the red.

Used for decoration, these vibrant colours introduce vitality and boldness within an interior. They energize a space too pale or lacking in character. They warm and illuminate a dark room. But beware, in high doses, red and orange can also iname and infuse anger or irritation, this negative eect being less for orange where the yellow hand tempers the red.

Use the red-orange sparingly rather than as a total look. A rug, a sofa, or a small piece of lacquered furniture is enough to create the desired eect and can also be highlighted with accessories, on a lamp, table, object or cushion.

Keep these tones for "moving" areas where there is activity such as an entrance hall, stairs, living room or kitchen. In these environ-ments, the red and orange will channel energies and structure the space.

The French-Lebanese interior architect anddesigner Amine Fallat created the Philae, a subtleand elegant model, for Canapés Duvivier. Inspired by architecture, as seen in a number ofhis creations, he mixes the classical, the conventionalFrench and creative building style structuresto become "seaside art deco" of Tripoli, the city where he grew up.

Materials to touch, materials to admire and appreciate, leather and wood are part of everyday life for “Mr Average”. Since the start of time, furniture, objects and tools have been manufactured and appreciated for the sensations they produce and recognized for their strength and durability.

These two natural materials, widely used in trade and industry, are seen as noble and beautiful when they are handled by talented craftsmen who respect their characteristics and know how to enhance their features. The works of marquetry and luxury leather goods are examples of the wonders that can be produced with wood and leather.

Their sensual and irregular forms are inviting to touch. Close your eyes and let go to feel the movements of the surface, velvety or rough. The veins and knots in

the wood, the grain and neck creases of the leather create innumerable dierent patterns.

The Maillol is the symbolic model of the Canapés Duvivier collection.

Designed in 1985, it took its bestseller status in 1991 when it became Duvivier’s model of the year with the photo of the famous "Maillol on the beach," remaining etched in memories as the perfect image of the brand. For the record, this shot was made on the beach at Trégastel in Brittany at low tide with a very uncertain weather forecast: extremely poor conditions and a very tight schedule for a magnicent photo that symbolizes the spirit "beyond time and trends ".

Since then it has undergone many changes, for the most part imperceptible like the removal of the piping, front panel section on the cushions or a reduction in the height of the front structural base. Two major changes occurred in the mid-2000s:it became available in two dierent depths 102 cm and 110 cm to t all body types;

it could be equipped with integrated headrests with the framework sliding behind the back cushions. Long awaited, the latest evolution of the Maillol is the chaiselongue

sofa that brings new possibilities of comfort and use with a chaiselongue of generous proportions.

In consequence to the bohemian style, the "mismatch" is a relaxed and uninhibited design approach. With "mix and match" daring and imagination are allowed.

Regardless of shapes, materials and colours, pleasure is taken in combining objects or furniture that one admires. Gathered during the course of life, memories of a trip or family heirloom, long coveted or eye catching pieces. One is left unchecked to follow their desires and imagination.

By necessity, the principle of mismatching has long existed in the living area. Certain sofa models, whose arms are bulky, are not feasible as an armchair. In this case, it is suggested to combine one or several small armchairs in choosing coordinated or dierent upholstery. The mixture of styles and colours are generally quite conventional.

However, mismatching chairs around the dining table is newer and bolder, as it is for tableware, experimenting with the "mix and match" of shapes, colours and / or materials. You can even go as far as arranging dining chairs, stools, chairs and a bench around the table.

In contrast to the bright colours like red, blue or orange with an articial connotation, natural tones ranging from beige to brown or dark grey, refer to mineral or vegetal matter: pebbles at the edge of the sea, tree bark or mountain rock. These associate a life more in harmony with nature, creating an atmosphere of serenity conducive to relaxation within an interior space.

Material colours

Mineral references bring to mind limestone clis and white sandy beaches. For the upholstery of sofas and armchairs, one favours the semi-aniline leather like the Boxcalf or Nappaline that allow for a wider range of colour and a more uniform appearance.

Light shades

FASHION

Back to nature … Choosing a range of natural shades to furnish and decorate interiors is not recent. Yet the new consumer fashion veers towards more environ-mentally friendly products, a natural style which xes itself rmly in the heart of today’s real trends within decoration.

Colours of certain rocks, like grey, can be added to an interior to give it a more contem-porary feel. But it should not be used alone in account of creating an atmosphere too "hard". It combines itself perfectly with other natural colours, like granite boulders.

The contemporary grey

Colours usually associated with leather come in many shades, sometimes slightly orangey-red, sometimes with a hint of blue. With these colours the drum-dyed and aniline leathers have a vibrant depth and nal nish.

Unevenness in playTo escape the checkerboard or "yin-yang" eect , choose one of thetwo colours to make it the more dominant, white preferably, whichwill bring more light and be more neutral, or black for a more masculinecontemporary connotation. Walls and ceilings really must be whiteto create the background and reserve black for some architecturalelements or pieces of furniture such as a sofa, sideboard or chairs.

Warm up with lightsIn a black and white decor, lighting is essential. In addition to the mainlighting, increase the areas of light, adapting, of course, to the naturallight in the room. An interior ooded with sunlight through large windowsor bay windows, does not require as many xtures as when the openingsare narrow and poorly angled.

Developinga multifunctional space

The choice of furniture is essential to the development of a large living room or one faces the disastrous "Alice in Wonderland" eect: furniture that appears tiny in relation to the proportions of the room.

• Sofas, armchairs, etc. The sectional models are ideally adapted for spacious environments. They occupy an area which is clearly dened. They have, however, the drawback of low modularity. If this is important, it is best to choose a two or three-seater sofa that can be positioned at an angle or face-to-face and with which armchairs can be added. The ottomans are also elements

to incorporate creating additional seating that can be moved easily and occupy the

space without creating visual barriers.• Coee tables, side tables, etc. One can opt for a large coee table that will occupy all the space in the centre of the room. But the best solution is to choose several small tables that can be assembled and rearranged as one wishes. Indeed, the latter option has a double advantage: great modularity of the components and refreshing decoration by the play on colours and sizes.• Dining room table. In a vast living space, choose a

large dining table without exten-sions. By choosing a xed table there are

greater possibilities in terms of leg styles and materials that can be used.• Bookcases, sideboards, etc. They can have a dual function: storage and denition. In the latter case, they are positioned in the middle of the room to separate the dierent spaces and must be visible from the front and back. Care must be taken not to compartmentalise too tightly and thus when it comes to a bookcase, choose a double face that can be seen through.

Choosing furniture

In order that spaces are clearly identi-able or separated discretely, it is necessary to plan rationally the sepa-rate areas to be created: the living area which is organised around the sofa, the

dining area with the dining-room table, and possibly secondary spaces like a TV corner, relaxation or oce. There are several options to create the boundaries:

- Choose dierent colours of paint, but coordinate the walls- Use furniture, sofas or double sided book-cases to "close" an area- Distinguish the areas with rugs

FULL FRAMEBeautiful leather - it is natural and authentic, supple and resistant. To obtain these qualities, there are three essential points that must be combined: the quality of the hide, the expertise of the tanner and a “full-grain” nish with a colour that reveals the true nature of leather.

What is beautiful leather ?

Drum dyed or aniline: the colour of the leather is obtained by immersion in a

dye bath (drum dyed) or by immersion and thenwith a projection of dye on the surface (aniline).

Pigmented semi-aniline: small coating of pigmentation is projectedonto the surface for a uniform colour whilemaintaining a comfortable feel.

Different qualities of leather

Beyond the aesthetic and tactile virtues, beautiful leather possesses a number of other benets. A natural material being in the same league as silk or pure wool, it is an excellent thermal regulator and absorbs moisture: feeling warmth in winter and coolness in summer. By its tissue structure (intertwined bres in three dimensions), a leather of quality is particularly resistant. Well maintained, it acquires a patina over time. Small scratches will fade by the friction of bres. The marks disappear in the thickness of the leather.

Comfort and durability

The keys to beautiful leather

CENTQUATRE

Coating: this is truly a layer of pigmentation which isapplied to the hide, as it could be on anysynthetic material. The result holds noresemblance to natural leather in termsof quality, durability and comfort.

Hide quality: hides come from young European bulls origina-ting from non high-yielding stockbreeders. They possess the physical and mechanical characteris-tics of youth and good health: supple and resistant.

Leather colouring:it determines its feel and appearance. To have a beautiful leather with an exceptional touch anda long lasting aspect, one must choose a slightlyor non pigmented leather. The layer of pigmentis what provides a uniform colour and hides the defects. There is also a lm on the surface of the leather, a light coating if slightly pigmented,a thick layer if heavily pigmented.

Tanning qualities:a tanner must master the tanning process from preparation through to the nal treatment. It is the combination of an ancient craftsmanship together with the ever more ecient processing of the hides which produce authentic and hardwearing leather.

Leather nish: to have supple, resistant leather with a natural

aspect, one must choose “full-grain”. Otherwise sanding the surface for the defects to disappear

will greatly reduce the elasticity of the leather and its lifetime, and printing an articial grain will alter and distort the appearance, with the leather

changing and hardening to touch.

The size, or more precisely the volume, is a key point to choosing a sofa bed, even more than for a standard sofa. Indeed, integrating the bed mecha-nism imposes minimum width dimensions as well as for the depth. It requires relatively thick armrests for the mechanism to be securely attached. This set of constraints can give some models imposing dimen-sions and sometimes a bulky appearance. Moreover, you need to take into account the dimen-sions of the sofa when it is closed but also when it is open in the sleeping position. There must be enough space in the room where it is placed to be able to open fully.

On a sofa bed, the bed base and mattress fold into three thus being hidden within the body of the sofa under the seat cushions. The mechanism to open and close the bed must be exible and easy to use, especially if it is for regular use.

Whether furnishing a small Parisian apartment in which the bed will be used daily, or to equip a guest room or a holiday home for a more occasional use, the sofa bed should be comfor-table and practical to ensure a good nights sleep. For choosing the right one, three criteria must be taken into account: the size, the opening and closing mechanism and the quality of the mattress and bed base.

Last but not least, to have a good nights sleep, you need good bedding. For the base, dierent comforts are possible depending on whether you choose a slatted mechanism, stretched cloth or a mixture of metal grid with stretched cloth. In contrast for the mattress, it is imperative to have high resilient foam, and ideally a minimum thickness of 11 cm, to maintain an equal comfort over time.

- Antique style leather hides: Antika- A solid beechwood frame and beech plywood for the central part and armrests- Foam covering the structure, without forgetting the bi-density foam seat cushions- Springs and red rubber struts for suspension- Square wooden feet- Sewing thread (it’s a little like the icing on the cake…)

Cutting and sewing leather

Insert the cushion foam into its leather cover taking care to adjust the corners.

Attach the rubber struts and suspension springs onto the structure. Cover the wooden structure with foam obtaining a soft result.

Cushion lling and the corestructure

Throw the leather cover onto the back of the structure and pull it tight adjusting to its shape. Ensure there is no slack leather before stapling. Then upholster the two armrests with their covers. Take particular care when stapling on the rounded parts.

Assemble all parts of the armchair: main structure, armrests and armrest pads. Attach the feet and add the seat cushions.

Comfort is a matter of personal judgment. Some prefer to have a rm back and seat support. Others like to slouch and sink into a plush sofa. Some sit well back while others sit on the edge of the seat cushion. From a technical point of view, the comfort of a sofa can be changed by adjusting certain elements:

- High back: with a high backed sofa or armchair the entire back is rmly supported and the shoulders can relax for a sustained upright comfort. Aestheti-cally, they are the models with a more classic appearance.

- Sloping seat: this technical term refers to the slight slope that is given to the seat which allows one to sit back properly into the sofa. It avoids the sensa-tion of sliding forward.

- Bi-density foam: the seat and back cushions can be composed of dierent densities of foam that better adopts itself to the body shape or reinforces the possibility of settling yourself well back into the seat.

- Seat depth: depending on whether someone is small or tall the depth of a model may not always be appropriate. If small, in a deep sofa the feet do not touch the ground and the legs are “cut” at the calves. If tall, in a small depth sofa the knees are not supported and will have the feeling of being folded in half. The Maillol sofa was developed in two dierent depths to allow everyone to choose the model most suitable for them.

Canapés DUVIVIER 35

For sofa structures, Canapés Duvivier always uses solid beechwood for the cross pieces and

beech plywood for the side panels. These materials, unlike softwood and chipboard

guarantee the sturdiness of the furniture and, because

they are imper-vious to dampness,

do not distort.

TechnicalMANUFACTURING

The SBD suspension, a patented system developed by Canapés Duvivier, has a double bearing capacity which means a suppler and more progressive comfort on the whole seating area. Technical polyurethane foam provides a soft comfort and then underneath, the suspension is composed of stainless steel springs mounted in composite rubber struts which work as shock-absorbers. In addition to a unique comfort, the materials used and the conception are guarantees against deterioration or distortion and ensure the mechanism works silently.

The interior seat cushions are composed of:

• either HR PU (High Resilience Polyurethane) foam and a blend of polyester bres and feathers in a segmented cotton slipcover• or HR PU foam in a protective cotton slipcover

The blend of polyester bres and feathers is a mix of hypoal-lergenic treated duck feathers and intertwined polyester bres in 3 dimensions, thus providing a natural puness obtained from the feather and resilience obtained from the bres. The High Resilience polyurethane foam and the association of perfectly studied densities guarantee comfort and longevity.

36 Canapés DUVIVIER

The leather industry is one of the oldest in the history of humanity. Our Paleolithic ancestors used hides to protect themselves but the hides were not tanned, just eshed. Their duration of use was limited because of the hides decomposing.

Tanning is a process that allows the conservation of the hide. It was born in ancient Egypt, on the Nile, 3000 years before Christ, and in China at the same time. It is known as "vegetal tanning": the eshed and depilated hide is soaked in a pit (then later, a tank) containing water and a powder obtained by grinding vegetation: oak, chestnut, mimosa or birch bark.

The proteins of the hide (collagen bres) are stabi-lized by a chemical reaction. It becomes rot-resis-tant leather subject to being maintained in condi-tions well hydrated. Other tanning techniques like oil, smoke and alum have been tried but gave poor results so were little used.

In the middle of the 20th century the process of using chromium salts for tanning was discovered and developed. The procedure was much faster than with vegetal tanning and resulted in more supple leather. However, chromium tanning is particularly toxic for rivers and streams which the tanneries used for wastewater disposal. In the 1980’s regulations were put in place to protect the environment, which resulted in a number of tanneries disappearing.

Leather,a natural material

The Carriat tannery is one of the last active tanneries in France and the only one that works within the furniture industry. Based in the Basque country in the South West of France, it produces, since 1927, leathers of exceptional quality that incorporate the natural marks of the animal’s life: wrinkles, blemishes, veins, all authentic marks of a living matter. Its leathers have a strong character with deep, transparent colours. They are supple, soft and resistant. An honoured partner, the Carriat tannery supplies all the drum-dyed referenced leathers for Canapés Duvivier.
