Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we enter into the beginning of February,

we once again we prepare to enter into the Lenten season as we journey through the Church Year. The season of Lent, however, is its own kind of journey. Lent is the journey we make as we travel with Christ from the Mount of Transfiguration to Jerusalem where He will face the cross and the grave for our sakes. This is a very sobering trip, a journey that often struggles to find joy. But we also know that at the end of this Lenten journey there is Easter!

This year our theme for our Midweek Lenten worship will focus upon the journey, but perhaps not in the way we usually walk it. Our overall theme will be “Return from Exile: A Lenten Journey.” All journeys must have a starting point; and in the preaching and teaching of our Wednes-day evening services this Lenten season, we will consider our starting point a land of exile.

The land of exile from which we begin our journey is the wilderness of sin and death. Sin came into the world when our first parents were unfaithful and disobedient, eating fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve sinned, and we have inherited from them not only the sin itself, but also the result of that sin—separation from our Lord and God. From the first sin in the first garden, we have been exiled into the wilderness where we have wandered without any ability to find our own way out.

This is the beginning of our journey: exile. But every journey also has a destination, an ending point. Our return from exile brings us into the promised land. Our relationship with our God is restored by Christ’s sacrifice. Our destination, then, is the perfect place, the new garden, the courts of heaven—the ultimate destination which was established for us by His death and resurrec-tion. There is great joy in this journey as we see where our returning brings us; but there is also a somber attitude when we consider what Christ faced on account of our sin.

All journeys consist of many events that take

place between the journey’s beginning and its end. Our Lenten journey is no different. Each leg of our Lenten journey begins in the Old Testament and then continues into the New Testament, point-ing us to the joy that is ours in Christ Jesus. Do not be surprised to discover that from the very be-ginning, even outside the gates of the Garden of Eden, it is Christ who travels with us. He has al-ways been our guide, from the very beginning, and He will journey with us to the very end. Indeed, He has even gone before us to prepare a heavenly dwelling place.

Life is full of journeys. Life itself is a jour-ney. We enter this Lenten season on Ash Wednes-day, February 14th this year, contemplating the real-ity of our earthly journey but with eyes fixed on its destination—the empty tomb and the open gates of everlasting life. What joy there is in knowing that we do not walk this way alone!

In Christ’s Service,

T Pastor Erickson

Lent 2018

Join us for services this Lenten season (dates and times on front cover) as we go through “Return from Exile,” a series from Concordia Publishing

House. Lenten devotional booklets will be available at the Welcome Center.

Life is full of journeys—even life itself is a journey. Much takes place between the beginning and the end, and our Lenten journey is no different. As Christians, we embark upon a daily movement from exile—from life under the burden of sin to the joy of the Gospel that is ours in Christ Jesus.

As we begin each leg of the journey, do not be surprised to dis-cover that Christ travels with us. He has always been our guide from the beginning, and He will journey with us to the end. We embark on this Lenten journey contemplating the reality of our earthly journey but with eyes fixed on the destination—the empty tomb and the open gates of everlasting life, with the confidence of knowing that we do not walk alone!

Stephen Ministers are the After People. They are there… after the funeral, when eve-ryone has left and your emotions crashing in on you… after you find a pink slip with your final paycheck… after family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out. Stephen Ministers are ready to come alongside you—or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives—and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed. If you would like to be connected with a Stephen Minister, contact Nurse Ronda at [email protected], or you may call the church office at 319-364-6026.

Women’s Small Group

On Mondays at 10:15 a.m. women gather at Mr. Beans in Marion for a small group study. On February 5, the group will start a new study on the book Loaded Words by Heather Choate Davis and Leann Luchinger. This book “unloads” 12 words from the Bible, and reminds readers of the mercy, com-fort, and joy behind these words that have often been weighed down with so-cial, cultural, and doctrinal baggage. February 5 would be a great time for new women to join this study!

Men’s Bible Study

Men gather to study God’s word on Wednesdays at 6:00 a.m. The group is currently going through the study How We Got the Bible by Dr. Paul L. Maier. All men are welcome to join this study.

Christmas Baskets

The Women's Guild thanks everyone for the donations totaling $1000 for the Christmas baskets. Gift cards were distributed to Bethany families.
