As I write this letter, we are preparing to celebrate St. Barth Properties’ 25th Anniversary. Remember 1989? Much has changed on St. Barth! In those days we were navigating the island’s steep hills in Fred Flintstone-like Mini Mokes and happily wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan “Sorry No Telephone.” Without all the designer boutiques, shopping was not the passionate pastime it is these days and we awaited the arrival of fresh fruits and vegetables from Guadeloupe.

Some things have not changed. The codes continue to prohibit anything “taller than a palm tree” from being built, our tiny airport still closes at dusk, the iconic burger shack Le Select has served three generations of fans and counting, and our clients still value the service level at St. Barth Properties. Our motto and mantra proudly remain Live Your Dream® and our team’s commitment to deliver the ultimate St. Barth experience is stronger than ever.

We are honored to have introduced St. Barth to legions of YLVLWRUVRYHUDOOWKHVH\HDUVÀOOHGZLWKZDUPVXQQ\GD\Vand starlit nights. Clients have become friends, and there

is nothing we love better than seeing familiar faces around the island enjoying the gorgeous beaches, shops and restaurants.

We hope you enjoy this year’s Silver Anniversary edition of our Live Your Dream® catalogue. Do “visit” the villa VHFWLRQ \RX DUH VXUH WR ÀQG RQH WR VXLW \RXU YDFDWLRQneeds and lifestyle, whether that’s a romantic hilltop hideaway, a beachfront property or a palatial estate with amenities galore.

If you prefer a hotel stay, we are pleased to partner with the island’s best. Don’t miss our “Hotels of St. Barth” section within and online. It includes what we call the best of both worlds: villas at hotels. Guests enjoy the extra space and privacy of a villa and all the pampering services of a hotel.

Our U.S.-based specialists will be pleased to help you choose the just-perfect-for-you villa or hotel, and our concierge team – U.S. and St. Barth-based – is at the ready to assist with restaurant reservations, spa appointments, boat charters, water sports, personal trainers, private chefs and all sorts of special requests. We plan table-top-dancing birthday parties, romantic popping-the-question dinners and weddings from intimate gatherings to bridal magazine-worthy events. As we go to press, the island government has announced a change in the 30-day residency rule. So come on down to say “I do.” We’ll help!

We invite you to visit our website and keep in touch by subscribing to our newsletter, Le Bulletin, and my blog (aka Peg’s Blog) for specials, hotel packages and all the latest island news. And we want to hear from you! Of course we hope you will Like Us on Facebook, but we would love you to post some of your pictures or Tweet us about what beach you are enjoying, what wine you are sipping or what you think of the newest bistros and boutiques.

I hope to see you on the island and at our weekly in-season cocktail party at this year’s new venue, Tom Beach Hotel’s La Plage Restaurant on St. Jean Beach – join us!

Merci Beaucoup!

Toast the 25th Anniversary of the founding of St. Barth Properties

USA/St. BarthAbout St. Barth Properties

Page 7: Liveyourdream vol18

My villa portfolio grew, and I began representing many of the island’s top hotels, working with car rental companies and spending more and more time on the island. I loved introducing St. Barth to my new clients and travel agents.

In 1992, St. Barth Properties took a quantum leap when my son, Tom Smyth, fresh out of college with a degree in business, jumped on board. He implemented a wealth of then “modern” ideas including a website with the domain stbarth.com, putting our villas online and getting all our growing staff on e-mail. Merci to Tom, who is now company vice president.

I’m passionate about St. Barth and love seeing our clients enjoying all it has to offer. As I look forward to many more years at the helm of St. Barth Properties, I take this opportunity to say merci beaucoup to all our staff and clients.

Normally, we reserve this space to recount St. Barth Properties’ early history, but as we prepare to celebrate 25 years, I am pleased to share it from a more personal perspective.

We often talk about how important vacations are to “recharge and reconnect,” and actually, that was the genesis of my founding the company. Way back then, I was raisingthree kids and a typical day would see me packing lunches, driving to early-morning KRFNH\SUDFWLFHVDQGPD\EHÀWWLQJLQDYLVLWWRWKHYHWEHIRUH,DUULYHGDWZRUN,ZDVWKHRIÀFHPDQDJHUDWP\KXVEDQG6WHYH·VEXV\GHQWDOSUDFWLFH

Steve and I knew we needed a yearly getaway, and I loved planning late winter vacations that would take us from gray and cold Franklin, MA, to a warm and sunny Caribbean island. We visited a different one each year, but when we arrived on St. Barth in March of LWZDVORYHDWÀUVWVLJKW,WVSLFWXUHSRVWFDUGKDUERUULQJHGE\VZHHSLQJKLOOVGRWWHGwith red roofed villas and its crescents of white-sand beaches were all gorgeous, but the European vibe and ambience of casual sophistication really sparked a passion that has never faltered.

Before we left, I bought a small condo in the island’s St. Jean Village. I’ve always been a bit impulsive, and more often than not it has served me well. That decision changed my life and set me on a path that led to my founding the company.

I contracted with a villa rental agency to rent our apartment, but when disappointed with the results, I tried my hand at renting it myself. My early success encouraged me to reach out to other property owners, and I quickly garnered a portfolio of 30 private villas. It was 1989, and I invested $1,000 in a phone line, a fax machine, business cards and a few small DGVLQWUDYHOPDJD]LQHV6W%DUWK3URSHUWLHVZDVERUQ$WÀUVW,RSHUDWHGLWIURPRQHVLGHRI P\GHVNDWWKHGHQWDORIÀFHDQGODWHUDWDKRPHRIÀFHUHÀWWHGIURPP\QHZO\PDUULHGdaughter’s vacated bedroom. One day I realized I was living my dream. Live Your Dream® became my trademarked motto and mantra. It’s what I hope for all my clients.

Julie plans her post-season inspection trip around her May birthday, and she celebrates with a late-night dinner at one of the island’s fabulous restaurants. Unspoiled and spectacular – it’s one of the island’s marquee beaches.

You should go there: If you like to swim “au naturel.”(Don’t tell anyone we told you!)

Why we love it: The hilly path leads to a sand dune; when we reach the top, we marvel at the view.

A very calm cove with a view of the islands of Statia and Saba.

You should go there: When other beaches are a bit too windy, count onShell Beach to be tranquil enough for swimming and sunning.

Why we love it: The tiny shells are so pretty. In winter, we come to watchthe sunset.

The island’s sexiest and scene-ist. Great to swim, play and people watch, and it boasts several toes-in-the-sand bars and bistros.

You should go there: To see the up-close-and-personal view of the little planesÁ\LQJLQ²LW·VVR6W%DUWK

Why we love it: It’s where all the action is, especially on Sundays at La Plage.

ActivitiesSt. Barth boasts a strong maritime history celebrated in several nautical races that provide

festivities for residents and visitors alike. The island is known for its gorgeous pristine beaches where visitors

can sun, swim and enjoy a full range of water sports. Shopping here is world-class, the restaurants are

second to none and the nightlife can be taken at your own pace and style.

St. Barth Properties is pleased to offer its clients an extensive selection of concierge services:

call us to arrange butler service or an in-villa massage, help with a tennis or yoga lesson, make a spa

appointment or book a dinner reservation. See all that St. Barth has to offer.

ShoppingSt. Barth is a duty-free port, and it caters to its

sophisticated visitors who revel in its some 200 shops

and boutiques. Those lucky enough to be on the island

during les soldes will reap bargains galore! Forbes has named

it one of the “World’s 10 Best Shopping Destinations.”

We know! Serious shoppers on a mission, and window

shoppers alike, might choose to begin in Gustavia. The

bustling little capital has three major shopping streets

including the harborside Quai de la République,

nicknamed rue du Couturier. It rivals New York’s

Madison Avenue and Paris’s Avenue Montaigne for

elegant displays in exciting designer shops including

Louis Vuitton, Tod’s, Bvlgari, Cartier, Chopard and

Hermés. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a Pain De Sucre

bikini, a Rolex watch or a Chanel bag. St. Jean’s Pelican

Shops and La Villa Créole, known for their chic

boutiques, should not be missed. Chic European couture

can be found in boutiques like Gustavia’s Mascara, and

a stop at one of the Pati de St. Barth shops (in Gustavia

or St. Jean) for a T-shirt, tank top or hoodie with the

signature St. Barth French West Indies “almost-square”

logo is a must. Any of the logo items there would make

a great gift to take home as well.

What to Buy?Designer duds and haute couture, but of course. French

and Italian fashion lines not available in the U.S. and the

trendiest beachwear are all readily available. Watches,

jewelry (the St. Barth map bracelets and pendants are

charming), French perfumes, vintage wines and Cuban

cigars for smoking in situ are all available. Looking

17

for local products? The women of Corossol and

Colombier intricately weave the native latanier palm

straw into delightful baskets, handbags and broad-

brimmed hats. Locally produced beauty lotions and oils

made from island plants make unique and interesting

gifts. A few shops offer a selection of made-in-St. Barth

clothing and accessories. St. Barth is home to many

talented artists – their works can be discovered in the

numerous galleries. A bottle of rhum vanille is great to

bring home. As in France, many shops close for a long

(2-3 hours) midday déjeuner but stay open as late as

8 pm. Many are closed on Sundays and Wednesday

afternoons as well.

Eat, Drink and Be MerryDining – St. Barth is truly a paradise for gourmets and foodies alike. Its over 80 restaurants range from gastronomique dining rooms, many housed in high-end hotels, to sidewalk cafés and feet-in-the-sand beachside grilles. Some venues can be quite expensive, but there are lots of affordable options with great ambience and amazing views. Reservations, always recommended, are a must in High Season; we are pleased to provide that paired with local seafood, dining here is considered to be the best in the Caribbean, rivaling that of any city in the world. The same local delicacies and wines served at the top eateries can be picked up at a number of excellent delis and markets. Many offer takeout as well. Make it a point to sample the wonderful breads and pastries offered at the French bakeries, and pick up fresh-grownitems for a beach picnic or an easy and delicious supper for dining in. For a real treat, consider hiring one of the island’s private chefs to prepare a meal at your villa.

Nightlife – St. Barth is relatively quiet, which is perfectIRU WKRVH ZKR OLNH WR UHOD[ DQG OHLVXUHO\ HQMR\ D ÀQHdinner. However, a number of the restaurants do morph into a bar scene later with live music and dancing. And there are some nightclubs that “are just getting started” about midnight and folks boogie until the wee hours. Be advised there are no casinos, but there is plenty of nightlife for those who seek it.

Experiential Activities – Cooking lessons, culinary experiences, wine tastings and tutorials are all available. Have fun while mastering the art of mixology, then enjoy \RXUGHOLFLRXVFRFNWDLOFUHDWLRQV,QGXOJHLQDOLWWOHÁRZHUSRZHUZLWKDFRXUVHRQÁRUDODUUDQJHPHQWVFRQGXFWHGE\DQDZDUGZLQQLQJÁRULVW0LQLPXPRI IRXU

Water SportsScuba Diving – St. Barth has healthy and well-balanced reefs, which make for ideal scuba diving and snorkeling. Many sites have structures that divers can explore, including some large caves and two wrecks. The best

diving is considered to be around Pain de Sucre, an islet just off Gustavia Harbor, and around Coco Islet and a small cape, l’Ane Rouge, off Colombier Bay. There are a number of diving schools that offer full-day expeditions to neighboring islands and night dives.

Boating, Sailing and Yachting – The options here are numerous and include everything from crewed catamarans for snorkeling excursions and sunset cruises to renting dinghies, kayaking and Jet Skis. Sailing on St. Barth is much like the island itself, slowly paced and spectacularly beautiful with no high gales but rather warm, steady moderate trade winds at 10-20 knots. Think in terms of paddleboard lessons right on the beaches. Gentle Grand Cul de Sac offers kiteboarding. No wet suits needed! Lively St. Jean Beach is another great spot – windsurfers love it when the breeze is just right. Lessons are available. Try it!

HikingHiking can be a great way to explore the island. The most popular itinerary is the goat path from Petite Anse (about 20 minutes) to stunning Colombier Beach that otherwise can only be accessed by the sea. You may also want to visit the “washing machine” on the island’s southeast side (take the path off the road in Grand Fond). We can arrange half-day and full-day escorted hiking trips with a St. Barth citizen who is also an environmentalist. The tours are fun and informative and include fascinating fauna.

Fitness7KHUH LV IXOOVHUYLFH ÀWQHVV FHQWHU RQ WKH LVODQG ,Qaddition, yoga classes and individual instruction are available at beautiful outdoor sites, and we can arrange for a personal trainer or yoga instructor to come to a guest’s villa. Aqua-biking (in a pool) has become very popular.

MuseumsThe Wall House Museum – Located on Gustavia Harbor, the museum is in a restored historic building dating back to the Swedish period (1785-1878) displaying artifacts and pictorial documents from St. Barth’s past.

19

TennisCourt times can be arranged (around €15-20 per hour) at the Flamboyant courts in Grand Cul de Sac and by the stadium in St. Jean. Tennis lessons with a pro are also available and can be arranged through our concierge. Several tournaments are organized every year, including a major event in August which welcomes the participation of visitors for friendly competition.

Spa ServicesSeveral of the hotels have full-service spas that are open to the public, offering massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and other treatments. The services menu at the chic health and beauty spa Venus Institut in Gustavia is extensive and includes Pilates lessons and Reiki sessions. Arrangements can also be made with independent therapists and estheticians for in-villa massages and treatments.

NG Création St. Barth

23

It’s little wonder that retail therapy is one of the favorite pastimes of St. Barth visitors. A duty-free port, the island’s plethora of shops include marquee designers of international reknown offering their wares. However, when your shopping takes you to Gustavia, we encourage you not to miss a precious little boutique called NG création St. Barth.

The “créations” are exquisite jewelry pieces, many designed by the boutique’s proprietor, St. Barth native Nathalie Gumbs. As lovely as her jewelry, this young woman’s passion for what she does is infectious and her accomplishments impressive.

Growing up in St. Barth, Nathalie eagerly looked forward to the arrival of her mother’s Maty catalogue from )UDQFH LWV JORVV\ SDJHV ZHUH ÀOOHGwith jewelry. She would pour over the images then, pencil-in-hand, start copying and then redesigning them. Soon, fascinated with shapes, she was on to her own creations. It certainly was the seed of NG création, and from that point Nathalie was on a mission.

Her educational credentials include the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, colored stones and pearls. Attending its New York City campus was an added plus, with its proximity to the prestigious Cartier and Van Cleefs & Arpels providing inspiration. She charted her course tolearn her craft, from studying diamond cutting in Florence to wax techniques in San Diego.

When Nathalie settled back in St. Barth – her familyhas lived here for generations – she established theinfrastructure for her business to allow her to bring her

designs to fruition including learning the retail aspect of the business and how to best service luxury clientele.

In 2010, NG création St. Barth opened its doors featuring Nathalie’s signature piece, the “Heart of Saint Barth,” a delicate gold tracing of the island encircled with a diamond-encrusted heart. Residents and visitors alike adored it! They happily bought and wore it as a pendant, bracelet or ring in its variations of white, yellow or rose gold. Each year she has added a unique touch with a

gemstone to create a special-issue piece that is sure to become a collectible.

In 2012, the young jeweler moved her boutique to a new Gustavia location at rue du Roi Oscar II where the “Heart of St. Barth” and her other creations are beautifully displayed together with a stunningly curated collection of designer pieces. Included are the rock ’n’ roll chic and almost tattoo-like creations of Nessa, the pure and simple designs of Ginette New York and a unique selection from Eternamé Joailliere versatile enough to be worn with jeans or cocktail dresses. And customers just swoon over the delicious gems of

Morganne Bello’s famous candy collection. Nathalie is pleased to announce that she will now be carrying a line from a new designer with Swedish roots, HANNA WALLMARK+RZÀWWLQJIRUKHU*XVWDYLDVKRS

Prices range from a very affordable €65 to an “Oh, wow!” €30,000. Amidst all the jewelry, Nathalie’s own tropically hued scarves incorporating the “Heart of St. Barth” are a pleasant surprise for shoppers. Exquisite, they can be worn any number of ways, and of course would beautifully complement Nathalie’s signature piece.

Santa Fé

25

Island newbies often speculate – and assume – that Lurin’s Santa Fé Restaurant dishes up the spicy food indigenous to the southwestern U.S. and neighboring Mexico. Au contraire. An expansive bill of fare tempts diners with traditional French cuisine including regional specialties like beef bourguignon, breast of pigeon with foie gras sauce DQGDGLYLQH'RYHUVROH2IIHULQJVRI IUHVKORFDOÀVKDUHgreat additions. A tank of happily swimming langouste await their conversion to lobster thermidor, and the wahoo prepared with ginger and coriander is among the most popular dishes.

And where does the name come from? Rumor has it that Santa Fe, New Mexico, was a favorite destination of the previous owner. The restaurant was originally a fun, casual spot where Americans would stop for a burger and a beer in the hopes of catching a football game on the bar’s TV. When chef and sommelier Emmanuel, known to all as Manu, arrived with his whisk, his corkscrew and his SDVVLRQDWH H[SHUWLVH IRUÀQH)UHQFK FXLVLQHKH MXVW NHSWthe name and focused on the food – and the service. The comfortable décor remains reminiscent of old St. Barth, and the views are stunning!

The genesis of the restaurant’s big bill of fare comes from a young Manu’s breakfast at a New Jersey diner where he was duly impressed with the size of their menu. He decided then and there “When I have my own

restaurant, there will be a big menu.” Legions of regularslove the recognition they receive from the staff and Santa Fé’s one-seating policy that makes lingering over dessert or a digestif a delightful experience. And those desserts! Hot fudge sundaes, old-fashioned banana splits and the classic peach melba invented in 1892 by the French chef Auguste (VFRIÀHU0DQXORYHVWKDWWKHVHHODERUDWHGHVVHUWVVHHPWRtake his guests back to their childhood, evidenced by those big smiles all ’round as they are waltzed through the dining room and served.

A native of Provence, Manu’s background includes classical culinary training in France and an eclectic roster of experience from a chef apprenticeship with Disney to New York restos to St. Barth’s sophisticated eateries. He has assembled a comprehensive wine list with good value bottles starting at €28 and topping out at €160 (all French, naturellement), while his attention to sourcing the best ingredients is superb. His coq au vin recipe starts with bringing in specially raised chickens from New Jersey, and KLVPXVVHOV DUHÁRZQ LQ IURP%ULWWDQ\HYHU\:HGQHVGD\The Thursday lunch special is a fabulous rendition of moules frites. We also recommend the mahi-mahi burger, the gazpacho or one of the yummy salads with warm goat cheese – with a nice rosé to while away an afternoon. Manu is quick to remind everyone burgers are still served at lunch and they are among the island’s best! Try one and top it off with a dame blanche (a sundae). Bon appétit!

Franck Mathevet & His Le Carré LoungeWith its charming sit-and-stay-a-while French courtyard feel, surrounded by

luxury boutiques in Gustavia’s Carré d’Or, Le Carré Lounge is as they say, “a great space.” ,W·VEHHQWKLVDQGWKDWUHVWDXUDQWRYHUWKH\HDUVDQGDOOKDYHEHHQZHOOÀQH

But the space needed something – and someone. Then along came Franck Mathevet, chef, sommelier, restaurateur and entrepreneur.

This man is so versatile he even spent a few early years as a personal assistant to Sting!

If the name sounds familiar, you may know him from the Wall House. In 2000, after selling a successful restaurant in the French Alps, Franck and his business partner Denis Chevalier were ready for a new challenge. On a trip to St. Barth, he discovered the then struggling Wall House Restaurant, saw its potential and thought, “this is it.” He came to the reclamation project with a culinary legacy and a wealth of experience. Born in a village in France’s Burgundy, his grandfather was a pastry chef and Franck’s training included an apprenticeship in Lyon, France’s capital of gastronomy, a stint as a sommelier in Paris and the role of sous chef at London’s Le Gavroche which KROGVWKHGLVWLQFWLRQRI EHLQJWKH8.·VÀUVW0LFKHOLQVWDUrestaurant.

The Wall House became his passion and what success he had. The service combined with an artfully created menu that included Grenouillettes and chocolate fondue drew hoards of customers that became friends. St. Barth regulars craved his signature Gnocchi Maison Al Pesto.

However, the time came for a life-balancing change, and Franck and his wife traveled to Montreal to spend time as a family with their son, who was a student there. He sold The Wall House to colleague Bernard Tatin.

After taking a break, Franck felt that St. Barth was still home and plans for a new project were percolating. The fruition of those plans resulted in the opening of Le Carré Lounge in October 2012.

Le Carré opens up around 8ish for coffee and begins serving breakfast at 8:30 am. Shoppers love to start their “spree” with lunch at the Lounge, choosing from the Raw Bar or an assortment of salads including a riff on the classic Niçoise (Franck switches it up with red snapper.) and other favorites like delicious Mahi Mahi sliders. All are at prices so reasonable there’s euros left in those designer purses for one more bikini. Mid-afternoon the space works as an alfresco ice cream parlor and transforms into a sophisticated candlelit cocktail lounge at sunset. The carefully curated wine list features organic wines from small vineyards and pairs yummily with everything LQFOXGLQJWKHWUXIÁHRLOSRSFRUQ

Diners can choose from small plates and items to share like the charcuterie and cheese board. The kitchen works its magic with prime U.S. beef, poultry from France and lots RI IUHVKORFDOÀVKZLWKDQDUUD\RI IDEXORXVVDXFHV7KHmost popular dessert? The Chocolate Lava Cake.

You should go! Contact our concierge for a reservation. Félicitations to Franck on another deliciously successful venture.

See You at La Plage

At St. Barth Properties we greatly appreciate our repeat clients,

many of whom return year after year and have become friends. And that was

the genesis of our weekly cocktail party. Now in its tenth year, it has turned into a special island

tradition and provides us with the opportunity to meet new clients and to catch up with

everyone, and to thank them all for their business.

49

The tradition continues and we are pleased to announce an

exciting new venue for this season. We’ll be clinking glasses

at the Tom Beach Hotel’s restaurant La Plage – with our

feet in the sand. La Plage is located right on sexy St. Jean

Beach, just a short sashay from the water’s edge. It’s both

hip and romantic and captures the essence of St. Barth.

At these gatherings, our clients and staff alike love to share

their passion for the island with those who are discovering

are music to our ears. Many of our clients make an instant

connection, dine together later and form friendships that

last for years.

La Plage offers an eclectic menu with dishes that include

local fresh Wahoo with Tandoori Mojito Sauce and a Tea

Smoked Duck with sweet and sour tomatoes. The wahoo

is perfect for the seafood lover who likes a bit of heat.

The tandoori spices infused into the crust and in the

sauce take it up a notch. The duck is a unique option with

experience.

“We offer a certain lifestyle at La Plage – this is not just

a meal or a party, but rather a culture,” explains owner

Thierry de Badereau. “The perception that many people

have of St. Barth does not apply here. We try to operate

without an air of pretention and create an atmosphere

where tourists feel like locals, and locals feel at home.”

The Beachside Bash

We unveiled the Silver Anniversary issue of our Live Your Dream® publication. It’s our 18th edition and we think it’s our best ever. It was quite a night! We loved that so many of the guests got into the spirit with their own silver touches. If you missed it, we hope you can join us next year. Actually, November is a great time to come to St. Barth. Everything is fresh and new and Value Season pricing is in effect. The Beachside Bash is now one more reason to come.

Watch for the 2015 date and join the fun. Just call us to book your villa or hotel and then RSVP to our invitation. Our Beachside Bash is complimentary for our valued friends and clients.

We call it the Beachside Bash, and the idea came to us in 2009. That year, the iconic bar and burger shack Le Select was celebrating its 60th anniversary in early November, and its biggest fan, Jimmy Buffett, announced that he would give a free concert. Requests poured in from friends and clients who wanted to come down and join in. It was so much fun that we decided to have a pre-season party every year. And we have.

This year’s Bash again included great food, wine and cocktails and the company of old and new friends, owners and clients. The popular guitar-strumming vocalist Soley captivated us as usual, and the DJ had everyone up and dancing.

We launched the 2013-14 season with our 4th annual bash at the Hôtel Taïwana’s restaurant on Flamands Beach.

What a fabulous venue to celebrate our 25th Anniversary!

Annually in November

Hello Kathy and Julia, I just wanted to let you know that

we had a fabulous time at Villa Sud Ouest last week! We

are so sad that our vacation is over...we wanted to stay

on the island longer. It had been 12 years since we had

last visited, and it was so nice to see that much has

remained the same even though there have been

changes…we enjoyed every dinner all week! We loved

the villa and will absolutely book it again!! Thank you so

much for all your help! Maria and Tony, Fort Washington, PA

Peg…My family and I stayed at Villa Mahi. We just

wanted to say “Thank You” for such a wonderful stay on

St. Bart...we so enjoyed all aspects of the island! The girls

especially enjoyed Le Ti...and thanks to you we went on

a good night. It was so nice to meet you at the cocktail

reception…and it was good to see you again at Le Ti!

Chuck and I were thinking about returning to St. Bart for

New Year’s....Thank you again, and looking forward to

seeing you again! Melissa, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL

Hi Julie, Villa Mer Soleil was great – really enjoyed it.

Getting to SBH…as we all know – is certainly worth the

Kathy, This was a vacation of a lifetime. It was fantastic, beyond exceptional and perfect. We have been to many places in the Caribbean (Anguilla, Peter Island, St. Lucia...), but nothing came close to this. Both Alex and I and my best friend and her husband loved it because of the beauty of the island, the fabulous food – yes, it did feel like being in France – and the perfect villa we had. I can’t imagine a better one than Les Embruns. My friend wanted to make reservations for next year already, went to your website and found out that all is busy in May and June…We absolutely want to go back there in two years. The mix of comfort, rustic, sea and hills is without equal. (We are in love with Les Embruns, Flamands, Jacques and Maggie.) Yes, we will surely be your clients, always. I know that there is a lot of time till next year, but we would sure want to return to St Bart’s. The Drive, Dine & Relax Package with car arrangement was superb and the chef we had for Wednesday evening impressive. I can’t thank you enough for everything. What luck that we found you and one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Thank you so much. Please do stay in touch. Best, D., Ridgewood, NJ

Tom – Dennis and I had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay at Villa Manonjul. The villa is very spacious, with great outdoor space. It looks like a resort in the evening when candles, pool and landscape are lighted….Thanks again, Ray, Roxbury, CT

Julie, Donna and I, and our friends had a fabulous time at Villa Au Soleil. The villa was more beautiful than we imagined, and the views were spectacular. Thank you for yet another great vacation! Michael & Donna, Kennett Sq., PA

The Private Villas & the Villa LifestyleThroughout the world, names of certain destinations invoke images of villas and a lifestyle

of the sort one sees in romantic movies, glossy travel magazines and, of course, the snippets and sound bites of vacations enjoyed by the rich-and-famous. St. Barth tops the list.

A villa in St. Barth sounds exciting. It is. It is also relaxing, sensuous and, well, fun – and more affordable than you might think. Why not consider it for your next vacation

whether that be a romantic idyll, a girlfriends getaway or gathering of family and friends.

:HDUHKDSS\WRJLYH\RXD´KRZWRµ%\GHÀQLWLRQDYLOODLQ6W%DUWKcan be a petite perfect-for-honeymooners-bungalow or a luxurious eight-bedroom estate with every amenity

you could wish for. And there are loads of options in between.

Our VillasTake a look at the villa section that follows. The villas are presented in order of the number of bedrooms, and each listing includes just enough information (we hope) to pique your interest. Full details and more photos are on our website: www.stbarth.com. Our team of specialists would love to chat with you and guide you through the rental process. Note: most villas can actually be rented by the number of bedrooms needed. You would have exclusiveuse of the villa and the price would be adjusted accordingly. The majority of villas include pools with lovely terraces and decks, and some have Jacuzzis as well. Kitchens are well equipped for cooking and dining in and daily maid service is included with the exception of Sundays and French holidays. Check with us for villas with your must-have amenities. Location, location, location. Most of the island villas are tucked away in

its hills, where they leverage the panoramic

views and tropical trade winds – and provide

the privacy many vacationers seek. However,

we have several beach options, from being

steps from the ocean, just a little path or a

short walk away. For “city-slickers” we even

have villas and apartments in Gustavia close

to all the bistros and boutiques.

Dream About – The St. Barth Villa LifestyleWaking up to a beautiful day and perhaps an early morning swim in your pool followed by a café au lait and croissants

from that divine boulangerie near your villa. If you picked up your baguette (de rigueur), you can pack a picnic lunch and

then decide which of the island’s gorgeous beaches to explore. Afternoons can be spent lazing by the pool and enjoying

your view. Why not book a late-day in-villa massage? Observe the island tradition of sunset cocktails and then comes

the toughest decision. Which fabulous restaurant for dinner? Have an early night or dance on the tabletops into the

wee hours? Some days, switch it up a bit: spend the morning shopping in Gustavia, lunch in town and then enjoy a late

afternoon beach visit. Cook in and dine under the stars. Don’t feel like cooking? We can arrange for a private chef. Sleep

well – tomorrow will be another day in paradise. That’s the St. Barth villa lifestyle.

Carnival 2014

The Mardi Gras parade starts at 3 pm on Tuesday, March 04, 2014, at the entrance to Gustavia, near the commercial port and pharmacy and typically continues SDVW WKH 6W %DUWK 3URSHUWLHV RIÀFH WRthe Municipal Museum on the La Pointe side of Gustavia, and returns back to where it began. The parade is over by about 7:00 pm but the celebration often carries on to the early hours of Ash Wednesday.

The Mercredi des Cendres, this year held on Wednesday March 05, 2014, begins at 5 pm. Everyone wears black and white and the spirit changes with the traditional beating of the drums as the crowd heads down to Shell Beach. Once WKHUH ¶9DYDO·DQHIÀJ\UHSUHVHQWLQJ WKHspirit of Carnival is burned. This signalsthe ending of the revelry and the beginning of Lent.

If you are on St. Barth over this time,we encourage you to join in. Wear something festive and plan to arrive early. Park either in the industrial area of Public or near the lighthouse, as the streets of Gustavia will be closed for the parade until 7 or 8 pm. You can choose a place along the route or join the parade as it goes by. The celebration will surely be a highlight of your visit to St. Barth!

Carnival in St. Barth is smaller – not unlike the island – but is celebrated in the typical French Caribbean manner with lots of music, dancing and revelry.

And with a bit of St. Barth’s legendary style.

Gustavia is the primary venue for the festivities, and the parades begin with the Carnival’s School Children’s parade on Friday February 28, 2014, followed by Shrove Tuesday’s

Mardi Gras and continue on to Ash Wednesday – Mercredi des Cendres.

History of St. Barth

Tourism took hold when Rémy de Haenen, an eccentric Dutch aviator, landed his plane at what is now the airport. +HODWHUEHFDPHWKHÀUVWKRWHOLHUDQGWKHLVODQG·VPD\RURémy hosted the era’s luminaries – he was a friend of Howard Hughes – and Hollywood starlets. The ’60s brought the Rockefellers and Rothschilds and saw WKHDUULYDORI WKHÀUVWMHWVHWWHUV7KXVWKHP\VWLTXHZDVcreated. The ’70s brought spectacular yachts like Onassis’s Christina into the Lilliputian Harbor in Gustavia. The yachts continue to come, and in the evening the twinkling lights are magical. During Christmas and New Year’s – St. Barth’s signature season – the island gets an extra measure of glitz and glamour. Contingents of the ZRUOG·V FHOHEULWLHV FRPH WRSDUW\ GLQH LQ LWVZRUOGFODVVUHVWDXUDQWVVKRSWKHGHVLJQHUERXWLTXHVDQGRI FRXUVHto see and be seen. Others come seeking privacy and relaxation. They swim and sun at the more secluded EHDFKHVVWUROO*XVWDYLDDQGGLQHTXLHWO\SRROVLGHXQGHUthe stars in their hillside villas.

Everyone melds nicely: honeymooners, families with FKLOGUHQORFDOVDQGWKHIURQWSDJHQHZVPRYLHVWDUVDQGmoguls. It’s St. Barth!

St. Barth’s history is long, tumultuous – and fascinating. St. Barth was originally inhabited by Arawak Indians; they were followed by the Caribs, who greeted Christopher Columbus when he arrived in 1493. He named the island for his brother Bartoloméo. The French made initial unsuccessful attempts to settle it until some determined Huguenots from Normandy persevered and prospered. Later, French buccaneers made it a way station as they plundered Spanish galleons, which adds to St. Barth’s lore.

In 1784, France traded the island to Sweden, and the capital was named Gustavia – in honor of its king, Gustavia III – and declared a free port. (To the delight of shoppers, it remains free.) In 1878, it was sold back to France, but charming reminders preserve the past in street signs and the Swedish Cemetery. Those touches delightfully enhance St. Barth’s European ambience.

Location and Climate

Situated in the French West Indies, St. Barthélemy islocated 17°55 North and 62°50 West in the northeastern corner of the Caribbean Sea, some 15 miles southeast of St. Martin, and it is because it is just hard enough to get to that makes it that much more special.

This tiny island, just eight square miles, with its many hills intersected by serpentine roads is a testament to its origins – a volcanic disturbance some 50 million years ago. Theclimate here is arid, tropical maritime, and that means it seldom rains. Its rare showers are usually of short duration. Many people think that the Caribbean is like Florida, which is much hotter in summer than the rest of the year. The reality is that evening and daytime temperatures range from 72° to 86° Fahrenheit throughout the year, and the delightful trade winds (Les Alizés) add to the comfort level. There is rarely a day without sunshine. In short, the weather here is almost perfect, and combined with water temperatures averaging 78.8°F in the winter and 84.2°F in the summer, it’s an island paradise and an ideal vacation destination year-round.
