Before the implementation of the Third edition of the Roman Missal, November 27, 2011

Deepen — Nurture — Celebrate

These are the three words that the Bishops of the United States are using to describe what will take place in our Catholic parishes, in our liturgies, in our lives and in our hearts as we begin the implementing the Third Edition of the Roman Missal, beginning with the first Sunday of Advent November 27, 2011.

I know that both Father Brian Fawcett and Father Brian Christi-ansen have been laying the foundation for our parish commu-nity to begin “PRAYING - SINGING - CHANTING” these new words in our liturgy, again, beginning with the first Sunday of Advent.

It will take us time as a parish community to become comforta-ble with these changes, but we simply need to be patient with one another as we work together to pray and sing the liturgy.

On Wednesdays evenings beginning October 5 and ending November 16, during our faith formation, I am inviting all the adults of the parish to participate in learning about the chang-es that will take place in our liturgy. We will gather at 5:45 PM for a meal and end at 8:00 PM.

There are sign-up sheets at the entrances of our church. Please consider participating in these sessions because in the end it will affect the way we pray and celebrate the Eucharist together as a community of faith.

In the coming weeks we will finish the series in the bulletin that was started this past spring introducing these changes that will occur in the way we pray the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

If you have any questions or need more information please

give Father Mark a call.

Sparks from Father Mark

Liturgical Ministry: The end of summer and beginning of the new school year is always a time of a great energy and excitement, for students, family and communities. It is also time for our parish community to gear up and get excited as well with the many activities that the parish coordinates and facilitates that nurtures our Catholic identity throughout the year.

I would like to jump on this energy by focusing some of my time and energy on the training and recruiting of new liturgical ministers at our weekday/weekend Masses - the Liturgy the source and summit of our Catholic faith.

I have asked the following people in our parish to help me with this effort. As you can see I am still looking for two people to help coordinate the greeters and ushers for our parish. If you are interested or would even like to volunteer as a parishioner to partake in one of these essential ministers within our liturgy, please contact me or the coordinators of the various liturgical ministries in our parish.

Schedule of Liturgical Ministers - Lou Ann Dunn Sacristans - Christine Olson and Pat Storms Readers - Patty Lihs and Diane Smith Eucharistic Ministers - Mary Giddings and Irma Lefaive Altar Servers - Gaylon Gerber and Kelly Madsen Greeters/Ushers need 2 volunteers needed.

Scripture

Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? (Ezekiel 18:25)

Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths, guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. (Psalm 25:4,5)

…humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of oth-ers.. (Philippians 2:3,4)

…tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. (Matthew 21:31)

Reflection

How are God’s ways different from human ways?

Describe a situation from the last week that you would handle differently if approached in a more God-like way.

How have you reacted to a situation with unexpected kindness or compassion?

Holy Spirit, giving life to all life, moving all creatures, root of all things, washing them clean, wiping out their mistakes, healing their wounds, you are our true life, luminous, wonderful, awakening the heart from its ancient sleep. ST. JOHN’S PARISH FAMILY WE NEED YOUR HELP: Last year we had 10 women who took turns in preparing the

Wednesday meals. We received many compliments of the food that was served last year - this is an important part of St. John’s Faith Formation Program and we can not do it without you. We start in September and would like to have 18 people sign up to take one month (2 per month). Please consider helping us or gathering a team to once again prepare great meals for all involved. Please sign up at the church entrance or call Josie 223-2176. We need volunteers: 2 in Nov., 1 in Dec., 2 in Feb. and April. Perhaps your Sainthood Group, JustFaith Group, or Bible Study group or your fellow parishioner would like to volunteer for the month. (December only has two weeks to cook for due to Christmas!)

Religious Education News

We had a great beginning to our Faith Formation Programs. Because of the numbers in the registration we need to make the 3 -5th grade a smaller class. We will need two to step up and teach seven 5th graders once a month on the 1st Wednesday. Starting October 5th, Fr. Mark will begin an 8 week adult study on the New Roman Missal. Mark your calendar. Signup sheets are at the front entrance of the church. Please come and join us. Faith Formation Calendar: Oct. 5th: TGIF, Life Teen and Edge, 8 week Adult Study Wednesdays - 6:30 PM. Supper served

BISHOP GRUSS TO HOST LOAVES AND FISHES CHARITY FISHING TOURNAMENT

Bishop Robert Gruss will host a fund raiser Fishing Tournament on Friday, September 30th in Fort Pierre for the flood victims relief efforts.

The tournament will begin at 7:00 am and all teams will meet at the Expo Center parking lot in Fort Pierre for instructions and review the schedule. The day ends at 5:30 pm to celebrate Mass with Bishop Gruss at St. John’s followed by a Fish Fry Supper at 6:00 pm in Padre Hall.

A silent auction will be held. Prizes will be awarded to the top fishing teams and fishermen. The Registration fee is $150 per team of 2, 3 or 4 fishing from a boat or the shore, and is a donation to Rapid City Diocesan Disaster Relief Committee/St. John’s Parish Flood Relief Fund.

The registration deadline is the day of the tournament; however, advance registration will be appreciated. To register, please send your checks made payable to: Bishop’s Fishing Tournament, Catholic Social Services, 918 Fifth Street, Rapid City, SD 57701 or stop in the office to register. Don’t miss this great opportunity to help the flood victims, while enjoying a day on the Missouri River fishing with the Bishop, Fr. Mark McCormick and your other friends, while supporting a great cause. Ladies get your team together too! Shore fishing or in a boat! We have 2 women's teams already - including the church ladies!
