Bill in SD Remember all the concern about the black spot on one of the owls in the doorway last night? I st ill think that was the incubation patch which female barn owlshave where there are fewer feathers and more blood vessels in that area. The infrared camera picks up heat. Several owl web sites have this statement : To help with incubation, female owls have a sparsely feathered brood patch on their bellies that has a higher percentage of blood vessels than other part s ofthe skin. Blood flow through these vessels creates a good source of heat for the eggs.

Marla Woody Dillsaver So.. .my 14 year old seems to have some resentment about me spending so much time with the owls..last night he was in the room when they were all havingthere fly about moment. One here...one there... who's one first kindof thing. I was laughing at them and at all the comments being written. He read them withme and was laughing out loud right along with me!!! Think that problem is solved!!!

As for Sportsman's Paradise sites, thre iscurrently the Peregrine Falcons (I think another few weeks to go before they f ledge), the Red Tailed Hawk site and the Eagle site (another couple of weeks togo for Nest 1 and more than that for blurry nest 2). The problem with a songbird site (hummingbirds, etc.) is that they are usually gone in such a very shorttime. I do like the Sportsman's chat room set-up and their efforts to keep the chat rooms a clean, f un place to be.

Owlbominable Snowman (a.k.a. JH) Good morning everyone. Just signing on. Listened to Carlos as I was waking up.

He sounded pretty excited, and a little like he wished he had a dozen more cameras available. I'll be in the basement capturing a PDF. The one from 11pm PDT last night is posted to the files section already, but it's not on the main Chat PDF page. It'salmost 50mb and needs to be reduced. Some may have diff iculty opening it as is. Below are the images I posted last night. I missed Wesley's launch by a fraction of a second. I'll try to update that one f rom the recording later. Elliott I saw it. In fact, when I saw the Suffolk text, I did a double-take and went back and read Barb's beautiful verse. I somehow don't think we are the firstcrowd to have become enamored of owls!

Nancy in Stow, OH I haven't been on regularly, so this may be repeated, but on the Wiki site is a story about how the barn owl got their heart shaped face, by a student of JoanShultz. Goodness, how well done! If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

JT NOT MY work: Take 1 large field, 4 adorable baby owls, several trees, a cool brook, a large quantity of f ield mice and a pinch of pebbles. Mix the owlets and t rees togetherand stir f requent ly. Pour the brook over the pebbles. Sprinkle the field with flowers, various grasses and the field mice. Fill the trees with a gentle summerbreeze. Spread over a deep blue sky and bake in the summer sun. When done, set away safely in a cozy owl box or tree stump. Wrap securely in awe and store in the hearts of everyone.

Natalie Okay, I’ll try to keep this short. I know many of you are wishing, as I am, that there were some way to stay together after the owls leave (a week or so?). Forme, the fellowship of this group has been at least as big a reason to be here as watching the owls...I know lots of you feel the same. So I’m wondering if anyonehas ideas about how we could do that—if I had the computer expertise to set up a chat room or something, I would. But alas, it was about all I could do just to get an avatar! Any thoughts on how this might be done? (I’m going to post this several times throughout the day. )

Ingrid I have had the same thoughts as what to do when this is over. Maybe Hunting and Fishing might have a good idea for a site that we might all enjoy.

Tim Fulcher The fact that a man of Carlos' years can climb a ladder this tall indicates that he is a man of great courage or self -confidence. I hurt my hip a few yearsback and then noticed that climbing ladders and walking rooftops had become somewhat problematic for me. I rarely climb higher than I am willing to fall,unless I really need to. I salute Carlos for his daring bravado.

Kate Good morning everyone! Glad all made it home. I hope Wesley got enough to eat. I checked on them about 3 am PDT and he was sit ting on the ledge, doing his hungry call. My bird loves listening to the sounds of the birds during the day but she gets concerned when she hears the owlets. She must want to take care of them.

Merritt Hi Kate! The call you heard goes on all night long whether they've been fed or not. Lots of feedings are taking place off camera now, so Wes probably didget his fair share.

Kate Thanks, Merritt! I guess I was just feeling bad for our baby. While I was watching he and I think Patt i were sitt ing on the ledge. Mom brought food andPatti took off with it. LOL Left poor Wes sitting there by himself, looking sad.

Owlladie can anyone give me a quick summary of the nights activities..sorry to ask but cant seem to f ind out

Merritt Wesley spent a good part of last night outside with his siblings. While they flew mostly out of camera range, Wes often sat in plain view on the f ledgeledge and called into the night. Max, Pattison, and Austin had emerged from the box for their usual forays out into the night just as the cobalt blues ofdusk faded into black. After a few minutes, Wesley decided to join them. He approached the door, tested the air outside with a talon, then gathered uphis courage and bounded from the doorway to the plat form where he flapped his wings in triumph. He and the others were in and out of the box afterthat, and all returned safely home before the break of dawn.

Mollie Yes, Wesley and Austin were in and out. Max and Pat ti were out pretty much owl night long. I only stayed on for about an hour after all were out. Wecould hear Molly calling to them from the field that Carlos says is across the street f rom him. She sounded just like a squeaky wheel.

Merritt Hi Deb. No, it never was determined for sure, but look for how he holds his foot up today during the light . That dark spot could be the talons of hisupraised foot when he stands on one leg.

Deb Thanks. It looked kind of high for talons, and my concern was an injury from that first flight. Maybe we can see for sure today.

Natalie Go for it--they're relatively inexpensive and wonderful for travel purposes. I use mine almost exclusively now because it's such a breeze to move fromroom to room or to the outside deck. They're not great if you have a bunch of programs running, but I don't tend to do that anyway. (I have an ASUS--no problems with it. )

Tim Fulcher I have read conf licting definitions about clutch being number of eggs laid, or number of eggs successfully hatched. So if you have a nest of eggs whereone egg is f ert ilized, but the chick dies inside before hatching, is it part of the clutch? Or does it depend upon whether you have three in the tree or fouron the floor?

Wesley spent a good part of last night outside with his siblings. While they flew mostly out of camera range, Wes often sat in plain view on the f ledgeledge and called into the night. Max, Pattison, and Austin had emerged from the box for their usual forays out into the night just as the cobalt blues ofdusk faded into black. After a few minutes, Wesley decided to join them. He approached the door, tested the air outside with a talon, then gathered uphis courage and bounded from the doorway to the plat form where he flapped his wings in triumph. He and the others were in and out of the box afterthat, and all returned safely home before the break of dawn.

Tim Fulcher Merrit t, thanks for being a major player in this renegade of fshoot of the Owl box and keeping us updated on everything and post ing old links over andover, since they roll up and I have not bookmarked everything. I don't get teary-eyed over something like this. It is like the Buddhist s who "paint" withcolored sands some of the most beaut iful artwork to be found anywhere, then they just mix it all up when they are finished, like a prayer that everythingwill be okay. My late aunt's late boyfriend really would have enjoyed this experience, though. Thanks again...

Melissa Colleen~ Carlos ment ioned the books and the picnic. The camera being tilted bacause someone kept landing on it. He took some night vision video lastnight of the owls walking up and down the fence. And he shared with delight how the owls flew last night , circling around the house and the neighborshouse, landing on structures more than trees. How Molly would call to them, and hunt with them. And they mostly took the food back to the box to eat.

Jan (Bayonne, NJ) Their prey only comes out at night , so that's when they hunt . And roosting during the day keeps them relatively safe from day predators.

Cheryl Owen Same here - books, magazine articles, pictures - everything is about Owls!! Last night one of my facebook friends posted a load of photos of Owls froman outing he and his family went on over the weekend - and a very close relative who I haven't seen or spoken to for ages has been on f acebook f orabout a year without a profile picture - I randomly looked on her page the other day to find she now has one of her holding a huge Owl!!

Lorri When this website started, or rather, when I was first introduced to it, I realized that my friend Jill and I had bought these wonderful "fake stuffed"owlets (Barn owls, although I didn't realize at the time) at a gift store the previous year and both had placed the fuzzy adorable owlet replicas on top ofour Christmas trees,in different states (me in California, Jill in New Mexico); then I noticed that the switch plate cover in my bathroom, which had been agift f rom said f riend Jill, was also.. .a barn owl. THEN. ..I realized that an incredible pen-and-ink drawing my talented son gave me for my birthday last

year had as its main subject a heartbreaking ingly beautiful male barn owl with tears coming out of his eye. ....it's been quite a t rip, this.

Annemarie Looks and sounds like Wesley, 'cause he usually spends all night crying for food. Last year we had a red-tail hawk baby spend an ent ire day sit ting on a tree branch way up high up the hill across the street . He spent the entire day screechingjust like this, only more ear-piercing and high pitched. He was sitting next to his mommy who refused to go and hunt for him/her, 'cause she wanted it to learn tohunt. But it was incredibly noisy! ! Really, how do you tell hawks to be quiet!

Mike Sounds like a lot of adult children, who refuse to move out of parents homes and become independent. They stay perpetual children way into theiradulthood. Amazing how many refuse to leave the family nest, because life is often easier and not just because they can't f ind jobs and means to makea living.

Annemarie Ha ha, yes, owlets fledge at 90 days, human kids after. ..35 years? Check out The New Yorker this week, online. It has articles about college gradsmoving back home, too funny!

(Well unless you want to pay £6 a box for it from some shop thatcan still get them - I think I can probably find an alternative!)

vicki knutsen No problem Mari. Mom was chased away from under a house. The people did not know she had babies. When they found out, they unsealed the hole andhoped she would come back, but she didn't. They were bundled up and brought to the Wildlife center and then to me! Lucky Me!! !

Mary Carroll In captivity, they can live up to 20 or more years. There is a REALLY HIGH death rate the first year. I f igured that if they only lived 10 years, 8 out of 9owlets die the first year to hit the 2 year life expectancy (you see the same thing in human life expectancy in the "olden days" when 1/2 the babies died).

Lani PS Interestingly our near by Barn owl box has had nesters 4 years in a row while other boxes in the area are empty. Since Barn owls only live 2 years I amwondering if it is some of the kid's showing up. Now I am off to bed

vicki knutsen Melanie....sorry, didn't see the post. Anyway, I volunteer at a Wildlife center in California. My babies, all 5 of them, were orphaned. Mom had themunder a house. The owners were not aware that she had babies. They were able to get her out and then they sealed up the hole. A day later they

heard the babies and unsealed the hole hoping Mom would come back, but she didn't... . , so I was asked to home care f or them unt il they areweaned. They are now about 8 weeks old and eating solid food but still on bottles. I would love to post pictures if you will tell me how. They are so darncute!!!

It is a Chinook Salmon, 39 inches long, around 35 pounds (our scale didn't go that high), and was caught in the Siletz River about 8miles upst ream from the Pacif ic Ocean in Oregon. Yes, we ate, and ate and ate it. We smoked about half of it, then froze large chunks of the other half

to bake/grill. Only one chunk left to cook, real soon. We caught it late October last year. (How many times have I told THAT story?)
