SONGS, stories, and films have been

written about it. It has transported

millions of people and played a key role

in the development of many countries

around the world. It is, of course, the

railroad. So, all aboard, and let’s take a

ride through the past, present, and future

of the railroad.

Early forms of the railroad consisted1

of basic tracks and a vehicle pulled by

animals or even people. Trains really

picked up speed,† however, with the

arrival of the steam locomotiveu in 1804.

Thanks to steam power, trains could

move people and goods quickly and

reliably2 over great distances. It is no

surprise that over the next century,

railroads began to crisscrossu the

United Kingdom, the United States,

and other nations.

featured in several books and movies. This rail journey

begins in London and ends in Istanbul,h taking passengers

through some of Europe’s most beautiful countryside. One

continent away, the Pride of Africa train journey allows riders

several African nations. In Asia, the Eastern & Oriental

Express takes travelers through the tropical5 jungle between

With trains, you can connect with the past, appreciate

納撒尼爾．霍桑（Nathaniel Hawthorne, 1804-1864）為美國十九世紀影響力

最大的浪漫主義（Romanticism）作家之一。其作品多

以清教徒（Puritan）聚居的新英格蘭為背景，探討人性中的

罪惡與黑暗面，表現道德（moral）反思精神。

霍桑的故事常有超自然（supernatural）色彩，用來

表現對人性的測試，如本篇《青春之泉》描繪四個老人不

知從年輕時的錯誤中學習，一昧追求恢復青春、執迷

不悟的可悲心態。

woman. They were old and looked as if life

were a burden. The only spark1 of beauty in

The four people had been invited by Dr.

Heidegger to take part in an experiment, but

they already knew each other. The woman,

Mrs. Wycherly, had once been beautiful

and vain,2 and the three men had fought

over her. Mr. Medbourne had lost all of his

money through bad business deals, and Mr.

Gascoigne had been a crookedu politician.

The third man was Colonel Killigrew, and he

had lived a life filled with sin.3

what they would change if they could relive

their youth. They all agreed that they would

not make the same mistakes that had

ruined4 their lives this time.

“In that vase is water from the Fountain

of Youth,†” Dr. Heidegger told his four

The trips to the South Pacific islands were

filled with both marvelous1 and terrible sights.

On one island, You and Wang were amazed

at the natural beauty and also shocked by the

cruelty2 of nature. Tsunamisu had left new

graves3 near the shore. In addition, climate

change was taking its toll on the island’s

coconut trees as rising ocean waters washed

away their soil.

While some of the sights were sad, You

and Wang also saw people who were trying

to help. In the Cook Islands,† they met a man

who visited the elementary schools, teaching

students a song about climate change. He

hoped his music would influence the children

to care more about their environment.

What the two women saw on the trip

deeply moved them and helped them realize

that Taiwan is also greatly affected4 by climate

change. To draw attention to these problems,

1. 情緒動詞的用法一些表達情緒的動詞可用過去分詞形式修飾人，表示「感到……的」，以下為常用動詞及句型，要注意搭配的介系詞喔！

satisfied with 對……感到滿意
