有「搖滾民謠詩人」之稱的巴布‧狄倫首度來台開唱

In the years that followed, new railroad

tracks were laid across countries and

continents,3 and the trains themselves

continued to improve. Private luxury4

cars, for one, made train travel more

comfortable and stylish.u Now, we have

high-speed railways that can go over

400 kilometers per hour. With air travel

getting more expensive and trains getting

faster, the future may see railways rise

to the top as the preferred modeu of

transportation.5*中文翻譯請參閱第 67 頁

SONGS, stories, and films have been

written about it. It has transported

millions of people and played a key role

in the development of many countries

around the world. It is, of course, the

railroad. So, all aboard, and let’s take a

ride through the past, present, and future

of the railroad.

Early forms of the railroad consisted1

of basic tracks and a vehicle pulled by

animals or even people. Trains really

picked up speed,† however, with the

arrival of the steam locomotiveu in 1804.

Thanks to steam power, trains could

move people and goods quickly and

reliably2 over great distances. It is no

surprise that over the next century,

railroads began to crisscrossu the

United Kingdom, the United States,

While some today are looking to the skies and

in the saying that the journey1 is more important than

the destination. Without a doubt, certain train trips offer

passengers a feast2 of sights and sensations.u

Have you ever heard of the Orient Express?† It has been

featured in several books and movies. This rail journey

begins in London and ends in Istanbul,h taking passengers

through some of Europe’s most beautiful countryside. One

continent away, the Pride of Africa train journey allows riders

Express takes travelers through the tropical5 jungle between

the modern cities of Bangkokh and Singapore.h Asia is also

home to some of the world’s fastest trains, including the

With trains, you can connect with the past, appreciate

Dr. Heidegger’s Experiment

Joseph Chang

AROUND a black table in a study filled

with dust sat three men and one

woman. They were old and looked as if life

were a burden. The only spark1 of beauty in

the room was a glass vase on the table.

The four people had been invited by Dr.

Heidegger to take part in an experiment, but

they already knew each other. The woman,

Mrs. Wycherly, had once been beautiful

and vain,2 and the three men had fought

over her. Mr. Medbourne had lost all of his

money through bad business deals, and Mr.

Gascoigne had been a crookedu politician.

The third man was Colonel Killigrew, and he

had lived a life filled with sin.3

05

10

15

20

25

Dr. Heidegger asked them to think about

what they would change if they could relive

their youth. They all agreed that they would

not make the same mistakes that had

ruined4 their lives this time.

“In that vase is water from the Fountain

of Youth,†” Dr. Heidegger told his four

guests. Although they were skeptical,u they

agreed to drink the water. With regret5 over

their lives fresh in mind, they raised their

glasses and downed† the water. After all,

they thought, what could it hurt?
