Events Listings—we bring you listings for all

the major venues in Manchester for April.

Why we love Manchester this month:

So a month has passed by, and what a

month!

We’ve seen the likes of Nina Nesbitt

rocking the Ritz, Fall Out Boy and The

Pretty Reckless taking the arena by storm

and the launch of Kristyna Myles’

phenomenal debut album Pinch Me Quick!

(more about that later).

Friday Food Fight is in full swing (our

bellies have never been happier, although

our bank balances are concerned about

the gym membership we’re all going to

need).

This month doesn’t look too shabby either.

New acts are coming through all the

time—we’ll be catching the Orielles and

Charlie Cooper launching their EPs,

But it’s not all good news. Sadly, the

Manchester institution (and one of our

favourite haunts) Copacabana will be

closing it’s doors for the last time on

Saturday 5th April after 21 years of

bringing the best Latin parties to

Manchester. They’re having a farewell

party 4th and 5th of April—don’t miss it

and say goodbye to this amazing venue

and wonderful staff in style.

The Ritz

F resh from her turn on the dance floor in

Strictly Come Dancing, Sophie Ellis

Bextor heads to The Ritz on 18th April.

Since bursting on to the scene in 2000 with dance

track Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love), her

collaboration with Italian DJ Spiller, which entered

the UK single charts at number 1, there has been

no looking back.

With five albums, one EP and twenty singles under

her belt, she has certainly experienced her fair

share of success, fusing pop music with disco. That

being said, her latest album, Wanderlust, shows a

departure from her previous style – a collection of

ballads, folk, chamber-pop and raucous tracks

which some have dubbed as a return to her roots

as lead singer of indie-band theaudience.

Wanderlust, which she self-financed, was released

in January 2014 and peaked at number four in the

UK album charts. It has so far spawned the singles

Young Blood, with follow-up single Runaway

Daydreamer to be released 31 March.

Her recent gig to promote the launch of

Wanderlust, which has sparked her current tour,

received rave reviews from critics and fans alike,

admiring her new style, although she hasn’t

forgotten her old fans who will be treated to her

disco-pop. We can certainly expect some Murder

On The Dance Floor.

Dena (Denitza Todorova) is bringing

her brand of music to the Soup

Kitchen.

Inspired by hip hop, R&B and 90’s music (she is a

self-confessed Destiny’s Child fan), but also

drawing on heavy beats (enter J Dilla and

Madlib), she fuses these with an, at times, heavy

electronic sound, but leaving an element of jazz

to be spotted. In doing so she has drawn

comparisons with artists such as M.I.A., Santigold

and Jentina.

After coming to prominence as a guest vocalist

on The Whitest Boy Alive albums, she has

released a number of singles and EPs including

Cash, Diamond Rings, Swimming Pools and her

debut album, Flash, which hit stores in March of

this year.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

A merican singer, song-writer, actor,

producer, businessman (we could

continue!) Justin Timberlake is set for

two nights at the Phones4U Arena as

a part of his 20/20 Experience world tour. This

will mark the first time he has brought his pop/

R&B show to Manchester in over six years.

He originally hit the big time as the youngest

member of ‘N Sync, following his graduation from

the seeming conveyer belt of talent – the Mickey

Mouse Club. ‘N Sync went on to release three

albums (two hitting the number 1 spot in the US

album charts and the other reaching number 2)

and eighteen singles.

But whereas so many disappear after attempting

to go solo, Justin Timberlake’s career has

flourished – four albums (three number ones and

a number two in both the US and UK); thirty-six

singles; three world tours; seven American Music

Awards; nine Grammy wins; three Brit Awards;

five MTV Europe Awards; eleven (!) MTV Video

Music Awards; a burgeoning film career with

starring roles in movies such as Alpha Dog, Bad

Teacher and In Time; oh and he’s in a relationship

with Hollywood A-Lister Jessica Biel.

With a big arena stage show and hits such as Cry

Me A River, SexyBack, Suit and Tie and Mirrors,

this is sure to be a great gig .

In truth we could say so much more about him,

but we’re starting to get a little jealous!

MUSIC

Painted Palms As part of their European Tour, San Francisco’s Painted Palms

are bringing their psych electro pop to Manchester.

Cousins Reese Donahue and Christopher Prudhomme formed

Painted Palms together in Louisiana, but continued to make

music together online when they were separated by a move to

San Francisco—they continue to use this method today, despite

both now living in San Francisco.

Their debut album Forever was released in February 2014 via

Polyvinyl and demonstrates pop structures and memorable

melodies, but is not adverse to the dark—focusing on the

feeling of being caught between the external world and ones

own thoughts.

Halestorm

4 April 2014

Manchester Academy

MUSIC

P ennsylvanian rockers Halestorm have

certainly come a long way since their

formation. Believe it or not, they were

actually formed by lead singer Lzzy Hale and her

brother and drummer Arejay when she was 13

and he was just 10!

Their history tells tales of losing a talent show to

a tap-dancing cowgirl, playing gigs for free ice-

cream (well who wouldn’t?!) and homemade

pyrotechnics (don’t try that at home). But things

have moved on! With guitarist Joe Hottinger

joining in 2003 and bassist Josh Smith coming on-

board in 2004, a deal with Atlantic Records

followed in 2005, leading to their live EP One and

Done, followed in 2009 by their debut album

Halestorm, which sold more than 300,000 copies.

Their follow-up album, The Strange Case Of ...

was released in 2012, hitting number 1 in the US

Hard Rock Charts and number 15 in the overall

charts. It also spawned the single Love Bites (So

Do I) which scored a Grammy in the 2012 Best

Hard Rock/Metal Performance category.

They are perhaps one of the hardest touring rock

groups around, often performing up to 250 shows

a year (unsurprisingly they have released two live

albums) and they have toured alongside the likes

of Papa Roach, Avenged Sevenfold, Evanescence

and Bullet For My Valentine, to name but a few.

With rock and roll anthems filled with monster

riffs and attitude, brimming with confidence and

swagger, they have gone on to become live

favourites, regularly bringing down the house and

stealing the show at festivals.

The tour finishes off their gigging cycle for the hit

second album The Strange Case Of … and

coincides with Halestorm’s new EP ReAniMate

2.0: The CoVeRs eP which hits stores on 31st

March in the UK after a limited run in the US last

year as a follow up to their previous covers EP

released in 2011. The EP features Halestorm

putting their stamp of tracks as diverse as Daft

Punk’s Get Lucky, AC/DC’s Shoot to Thrill and

Marilyn Manson’s 1996. Frontwoman Lzzy Hale

commented “Like our first ReAniMate EP the

songs included here are a collection of both our

favourite songs and songs to challenge ourselves.

We decided to go more ‘bare bones’ with this EP,

meaning minimal production with live, gritty

performances. We recorded this the week of the

Grammys last year, so the excitement and

debauchery you hear through your speakers is

very real. We hope all our fans have as much fun

with ReAniMate: 2.0 as we did!”

ReAniMate 2.0: The CoVeRs eP released 31

March, featuring Dissident Aggressors (Judas

Priest); Gest Luck (Daft Punk); Shoot To Thrill (AC/

DC); Hell Is For Children (Pat Benatar); Gold Dust

Woman (Fleetwood Mac); and 1996 (Marilyn

Manson).

Therapy?

3 April 2014

Manchester Academy 2

M arch marked the 20th anniversary of

Therapy?’s top 5 album

Troublegum. To celebrate, the punk

-metal group are back on tour, taking in the

Manchester Academy in the process. They are

also releasing a 3 CD deluxe edition of their hit

album.

Originally formed in 1989 by guitarist-vocalist

Andy Cairns along with Fyfe Ewing (drums), they

quickly recruited Michael McKeegan on bass to

complete the line-up.

It was the mid nineties which saw Therapy?

achieve their biggest period of success, with their

commercial and critical breakthrough being

realised in 1993 as their Shortsharpshock EP hit

the top 40, peaking at number nine with the lead

track Screamager. Television appearances and

festival shows followed and in 1994 Troublegum

took things to the next level for them with

several top 40 singles, appearances at Reading

festival, Donington and Phoenix and most notably

a Mercury Music Prize nomination and success at

the Kerrang! Awards (Best Album) and a

nomination for Best Rock Act at the MTV Europe

Music Awards.

With a few changes in the line-up, Therapy? has

consisted, since 2004, of Andy Cairns, Michael

McKeegan and Neil Cooper (drums). There has

been no change to their music though and they

still deliver the type of heavy rock which can

scare your eardrums into submission.

With thirteen albums under their belt, Therapy?

have been quite prolific and, coupled with their

relentless gigging, there has barely been any

pause for breath for them throughout their

career.

The tour sees Therapy? playing Troublegum in its

entirety, which is sure to whip fans in to a frenzy.

As well as the full album they will be playing a

number of other songs from that era, including

rarely heard B sides The ShortSharpShock, Face

the Strange and Opal Mantra EPS.

Troublegum features some of their best known

material including the likes of Die Laughing,

Screamager and Trigger Inside, which are certain

to raise the roof.

With support from hotly-tipped British rockers,

Lonely The Brave, this is s a gig for fans of rock

and metal not to miss.

Elbow

F resh from picking up their first number

one in the UK album charts with their

sixth album, The Take Off and Landing of

Everything, our region’s own Elbow are heading

to the Phones 4U Arena on 9th April.

It’s been quite a journey for the band, who hail

from Bury. Founded in 1990, they became Elbow

in 1997 and comprise of Guy Garvey (vocals,

guitar); Richard Jupp (drums, percussion); Craig

Potter (keyboards, piano); Mark Potter (guitar,

backing vocals); and Pete Turner (bass guitar,

backing vocals).

Their debut album Asleep in the Back was

Mercury-nominated and seven years later they

scooped a Mercury prize with The Seldom Seen

Kid. A further nomination followed for Build a

Rocket Boys! Add to this an Ivor Novello Award

and a Brit Award for Best British Group (2009)

and you start to see a band which has

consistently delivered.

But it’s not all been number 1s, live gigs and

awards for Elbow. As seems to be becoming a

growing trend, they have also released their own

beer … a pale ale which they have created,

brewed by Marston’s.

Status Quo

G rab your air-guitars—Quo are back in

town and they’ll be rocking all over

the O2 Apollo.

It will mark the last time the legendary frantic

four line up will be re-uniting as Francis Rossi,

Alan Lancaster, Rick Parfitt and John Coghlan all

take to the stage.

With a longevity to rival any band, Status Quo

have actually released 30 studio albums, 4 live

albums, 9 compilation albums and 100 singles

since they were originally formed back in 1962

under their previous guise of The Scorpions (to

become The Spectres, then Traffic Jam and finally

Status Quo). They’ll need the two days just to

play their back catalogue, and even then they will

only be scratching the surface.

Oh, and yes, you’ve guessed it—they have also

released a beer—Piledriver, named after their

1972 album.

The London 5-piece band are

currently on tour throughout the UK performing

tracks from their debut album Shimmer Gold,

released 17 March 2014, following on from their

awesome singles The Hard Way and Start To Run.

Shimmer Gold is a guitar-laden delight, filled with

anthems which easily translate to the live scene.

Think Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Clash and

you’re along the right lines.

Filled with energy, grit, enthusiasm and, at times,

aggression (just the right amount), Dexters evoke

a tremendous response to their live shows

leading frontman Tom Rowlett to once comment

“People go mental at our gigs” - we’re sure he

means in the right way!

There’s a buzz about Dexters at the moment and

it’s easy to see why.

Support comes from Slydigs, The Sonik Seeds and

Since I Saw You Last, X-Factor judge,

OBE, Take That member and one of the

UK’s most successful song writers, Gary Barlow

will be performing at the Phones 4u Arena on

14th April.

Since I Saw You Last represents Gary Barlow’s first

solo studio album in 14 years and reached the

number two spot in the UK album charts, being

certified twice platinum.

With a legion of fans larger than the population of

many countries, Gary Barlow has built a

reputation for penning great songs and putting on

excellent shows (whether as a solo artist or in the

always-in-demand Take That tours which

constantly sell out).

they will be holding their single

Comprising of sisters Esme (vocal

The Orielles met at a house party

where they found a common

interest in music and decided to

meet on a regular basis to write

songs, under their original name of

The Oreoh’s.

Drawing on influences as varied as

soul to psychedelic and surf pop to

lo-fi bands, they describe their

music as both nostalgic yet with a

modern flair. It is a refreshing and

brave approach, and has certainly

had critics excited and they are hotly tipped as a

band to watch. In fact they rightly received

phenomenal reviews for their set at Liverpool’s

Sound City in May 2013.

With their first EP Sunny Daze & Sleepless Nights

finding a strong following, and deservedly so,

they should be set for a strong future.

‘how young are they?!’ and ‘where has my life

1995 when founding member Richey Edwards

disappeared.

With eleven studio albums (nine of which have

2013 release Rewind The Film, three compilation

albums 5 EPs and 41 singles to their name, The

Manics certainly have plenty of material to

choose from. This tour is in support of their

forthcoming new album Futurology, which is

scheduled for a May 2014 release.

The Manics are also no strangers to awards,

clocking up numerous NME Awards, Q Awards and

Brit Awards and an Ivor Novello Award, including

best album, best band in the world and, very

deservingly, Best Live Act.

Live, the Manic Street Preachers, have received rave

It was his debut album, Back to Bedlam, however,

which achieved the most success, becoming the

Not only does James Blunt put on an excellent

The Madding Crowd

10 April 2014

The Roadhouse

D escribing themselves as ‘weary

purveyors of songs of love, hate,

happiness, chaos, rebellion, glamour,

intelligence, wit, imagination, bile,

passion, despair, rejection and sheer humanity’,

Manchester’s The Madding Crowd will be playing

at The Roadhouse.

Formed in April 2010, The Madding Crowd are

Ben Corry (singer and guitarist), Dominic Corry

(lead guitar), Claud Corry (bass guitar) and Danny

Kristof (drums).

Since their launch, they have released three EPs

Because We Are Too Much (2010), They’ll Love

You More For Who You’re Not (2011) and A Stitch

In Time (2013), which spawned their debut single

When I Go Walking in the Rain and are becoming

a familiar sight on the Manchester live scene,

having played at venues such as Dry Bar, Sound

Control, The Roadhouse and Manchester

Academy 3.

Written from a place of melancholy, The Madding

Crowd burst, conversely, with enthusiasm,

launching head first into their music which is as

diverse as it is energetic.

Fusing rock riffs and chords, with an element of

psychedelia and a hint of punk, fans and critics

have taken a liking to them. Their songs range

from epic tales of anger (catch The Blood Upon

Their Face) to punk pop (their debut single When

I Go Walking in the Rain). Guitar effects and

distortion are also used to full effect as they seek

to bring a feeling of nostalgia, glamour and

imagination to their music.

In Review - Nina Nesbitt

ROCKING THE RITZ

Nina Nesbitt played at The Ritz

21 March 2014

I n the lottery of life, Nina Nesbitt hasn’t

done too badly at all. At the age of 19, she’s

an experienced gigger, launched her debut

album, Peroxide, scored an army of fans, she’s

certainly got the looks and style and she’s

definitely got the talent to match.

Almost a regular on the Manchester live scene,

she has performed at venues such as Sound

Control, Band on the Wall, The Academy and The

Deaf Institute. We headed down to The Ritz to

see Nina live and, like the rest of the audience,

we weren’t disappointed.

As Nina walked out on stage, wearing a Blondie t-

shirt given to her by a fan from Belgium, the

venue erupted. Fans were overjoyed and the

packed Ritz came to life. She immediately

launched into the title track from her debut

album, Peroxide, following up swiftly with The

Outcome and The Apple Tree. Despite this being

her biggest (non-festival) gig yet, any concerns of

nerves were quickly dispelled as she performed

with ease, strumming away comfortably with her

guitar.

She also showed her versatility, moving to the

keyboard to perform a beautiful solo version of A

Great Big World’s Say Something and then Two

Worlds Away with just her guitar for

accompaniment.

The return of the full band then signalled a return

to the rockier side, with fan favourite Mr C,

showing her skill with writing social

commentaries, and Tough Luck. After a brief

slowing down with Align, the crowd were

bouncing along merrily to Way Of The World, a

song inspired by her foray into the retail world

and a tale to inspire people to follow their

dreams.

Lighting was used to full effect during He’s The

One I’m Bringing Back as she beat a sugar laden

drum in time to the beat, the sugar lighting up

and bouncing into the air to dramatic effect,

whilst the audience joyfully sang along.

Immediately contrasting this, she managed to

bring the audience to deliberate silence for an

emotional performance of The People, before

whipping them back up into a frenzy with Selfies

(featuring fans pictures beamed onto the stage),

a nod to the festival season of which she is such a

big fan with Brit Summer and a fitting finish with

huge crowd favourite Stay Out, during which she

spent time hugging fans who were fortunate

enough to be close to the front.

Whilst some acts can leave you wanting live, Nina

Nesbitt is definitely not one – a show full of

energy and enthusiasm, variety, coupled with a

fantastic voice and obvious talent. We will

certainly be back in line for tickets next time.

In Review - Fall Out Boy and The Pretty Reckless take to the Arena

SAVING ROCK AND ROLL

I f Fall Out Boy’s comeback tour and album,

Save Rock and Roll, was a mission

statement then they, along with The Pretty

Reckless, can considered it mission completed.

It’s not often that a great rock and roll band is

supported on tour by … another great rock and

roll band, but last night that is what happened.

The Pretty Reckless are a quality act, yet they

have spent a number of years supporting the

likes of Guns’n’Roses, Evanescence and Fall Out

Boy rather than headlining in their own right,

save for smaller venues such as The Academy

where they headlined three years ago. But last

night, on the day of the launch of their second

album, Going To Hell, they proved that headlining

arenas is within their grasp.

Whilst some of their material was new to fans,

having only been released that day (I myself had

barely managed to listen to the album in full

before the gig), that didn’t matter. The songs and

their performance were strong enough to cover a

lack of familiarity. And when their better known

tracks such as Miss Nothing and Make Me Wanna

Die were played, the crowd loved it.

In Taylor Momsen, they have the perfect front

woman – young and sexy, a fantastic strong voice

suited to rock music, a skilled performer with

great stage presence (her background in acting

clearly an advantage), but more than that a front

woman who loves her music and relishes

performing live. It’s no surprise that Taylor

Momsen is repeatedly referred to as a rock

goddess.

Whilst their set was relatively short, to ensure

that sufficient time was given over to the

headliners, it was enough to show that The Pretty

Reckless put on a strong show and have

sufficiently good material that given headline

status, they would no doubt deliver.

Page 17: Live Manchester Magazine April 2014 Edition

Fall Out Boy and The Pretty Reckless

played the Phones 4u Arena

17 March 2014

In Review - Fall Out Boy and The Pretty Reckless take to the Arena

SAVING ROCK AND ROLL Fall Out Boy’s audience was mixed, attracting a

crowd who became fans due to their earlier work

(pre-hiatus) but also a younger crowd who were

perhaps more familiar with their comeback

material. It did not matter – all fans were

completely satisfied.

From the moment Fall Out Boy stormed the stage

in balaclavas, waving a Fall Out Boy flag, they had

declared the arena their own and they did not

disappoint. Even a power failure could not halt

them – the void was filled with Patrick Stump

gamely performing the most acoustic of sets,

attempting to quieten down the crowd to such a

level that he could be heard (it worked for a

moment), taking the now obligatory selfies and

generally keeping the crowd amused. When the

power kicked back in the fans erupted into a

frenzy.

Their performance was full of energy and an

impressive stage presence (Pete Wentz certainly

did not stop moving for the whole show), and

whilst their better known (and older) tracks such

as Dance, Dance, This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms

Race and I Don’t Care may have stolen the show

as a far as their material was concerned, their

newer songs could not be overlooked. The whole

armoury of rock star live weaponry was also

unleashed – lights and lasers; a smaller acoustic

stage setting halfway back into the arena was

used part way through the show; big screen

graphics and video; the raised piano sinking into

the stage; … even inflatable balloons! And the

crowd loved it.

There was enough of a variety of material

performed, that both new and older fans went

home happy. Fall Out Boy have earned a

reputation for converting non-believers into fans

at their gigs, and it is easy to see why.

Fittingly they ended the show with

Thnksfrthmmrs, but it should have been the fans

singing that to Fall Out Boy.

In Review - Foxes

THRILLING A SELL OUT CROWD AT THE RUBY LOUNGE

A ppearing before a sell-out crowd at

The Ruby Lounge, Foxes walked on

stage to give an honest and genuine

performance from an up and coming

star, clearly filled with amazement and joy at the

crowd cheering before her. The fact that she was

at a relatively small venue belied that she already

has a Grammy win under her belt, but at the

same time reminded you that her debut album is

yet to come.

Against a backdrop

which spelt out her

name in lights – surely

a portent of the future

– Foxes showed she is a

natural performer,

clearly enjoying every

moment and

immersing herself in

the live performance

experience. She filled

the stage with energy and vibrancy, embracing

the music and pouring her soul into it.

Playing a mixture of her own tracks as well as

covers, including a daring version of Eminem and

Rihanna’s The Monster, Foxes showed that she

has an incredible voice, which suits high tempo

tracks such as opening piece Talking to Ghosts as

well as the more mellow and dramatic tracks

such as White Coats. It is easy to see why Foxes

has drawn comparisons with the likes of Kate

Bush, Florence Welsh and even Bjork.

And yet, at the same time, despite the plaudits

and awards, Foxes retains an endearing nervous

charm and energy. Her interactions with the

crowd displayed a loveable vulnerability but

genuine enthusiasm. Her lack of technical savvy,

however, lead to a few moments of self-

deprecating fun whilst she attempted (and

sometimes struggled)

to take selfies with

various phones from

fans (but then again

she’s a singer, not a

gadget show

presenter!), a

refreshing change

contrived efforts of

Standout tracks Let Go for Tonight (which hit the

Flute Trio, will be performing at the

Bridgewater Hall on 9 April with a

lunchtime concert (1.10pm) to bring the Mid-Day

Concert Society’s season to a close.

The trio (Helen Wilson, Holly Melia and Sarah

link to Manchester, having studied at Chetham’s

School of Music and then at the Royal Northern

College of Music, where each of them individually

won the RNCM Gold Medal in the second years at

the college (2009, 2010 and 2012) - the highest

award given for performance at the RNCM open

to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

It was at the RNCM where the trio was founded.

All established soloists, ensemble and orchestral

musicians in their own right, they have gone on

collectively to win a number of awards—the

Royal Overseas League Chamber Music

Competition 2013, the RNCM Contemporary

Music Award 2012, RNCM Ensemble of the Year

Competition 2011, and RNCM Woodwind

Chamber Music Competition and Trevor Wye

Prize 2011.

The trio has regularly performed live throughout

the UK and internationally, including events such

as the National Flute Association Annual

Convention in Las Vegas, the British Flute Society

Convention in Manchester and opening the

Lucerne Chamber Music Series in Switzerland.

It was on the back of auditions that they were

selected to be artists for the Park Lane Group

Concert Series 2013/14 and the Manchester

Midday Concert Society 2013/2014 where the

panel was taken with their performance.

They will be performing Debussy’s Syrinx; Tizols/

incredible Threepenny Opera. A work

which was symbolically performed in a

war-torn Berlin theatre in 1945 by a

cast featuring many newly released

concentration camp prisoners, the Threepenny

Opera has since gone on to be performed over

10,000 times in eighteen languages.

The musical was penned by German dramatist

Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, adapted

from the 18th century work of John Gay—The

Beggar’s Opera and provides a Socialist critique

of the capitalist world.

Set in Victorian London, it tells of the conflict

between Macheath (an amoral criminal) and

Jonathan Jeremiah Peachum who controls the

begging racket when Macheath marries

Peachum’s daughter to his horror.

Most famously it spawned the popular song Mack

The Knife.

I f you are not familiar with Kristyna

Myles’ music – you need to be!

We were fortunate enough to attend

Kristyna’s album launch at the Deaf Institute

and were left in absolutely no doubt as to her

amazing talent.

Before the gig started, we caught up with

Kristyna backstage to get a few words on her

album.

Tell us a little bit about your album.

My album is called Pinch Me Quick and it’s out

today – March 10th. I’m very excited about it

finally being released because it’s been a long

time coming. I recorded it about three years

ago with Decca Records funding it initially. It

was recorded by Ken Nelson who is a Grammy

award winning producer (he did Coldplay’s

first three albums as well as Paolo Nutini,

Gomez and Badly Drawn Boy). It was

incredible to record an album with someone of

his stature and also the fact that I got to

record the album with my band, who I’ve been

performing with since university, it was just an

MUSIC

incredible experience, so we have a really good

bond and I really hope that comes through on

the recording. My favourite song on the album

is a track called I’m Not Going Back because it’s

all about not going back to a place in your life

that was stopping you from fulfilling your full

potential, so for me that’s kind of believing that I

cannot fulfil a career in music, so this is kind of

saying I’m not going back to those negative

thoughts and that way of thinking. It’s really

special as well because a lot of people have

emailed me or facebooked me and said how

much the track has meant to them and how it’s

made them move on from a harmful or really

struggling testing time in their life and that

means so much when a song I have co-written

has touched somebody.

How would you describe your music?

I would say my music is a blend of pop and soul

with a tiny bit of jazz thrown in for good

measure. Somewhere in between Joss Stone,

Sara Bareilles and Natasha Bedingfield, I think.

Who are your inspirations?

I really love people like India.Arie as she sings

and writes about things which really inspire you

and I think her tagline is to spread love and light

through music and that’s what I hope to achieve

as well. She really inspires me. I also love Lauryn

Hill. She was one of the first singers I saw – in

Sister Act 2! - she was singing Joyful Joyful and

at that moment I just thought I really want to be

able to do that, to be able to make people feel

what I’m feeling now, so I love her. And of

course the soul greats like Stevie Wonder and I

also love Carole King, who is an amazing song-

writer and Sara Bareilles, she’s fantastic too. I

love lots of different kinds of music but

something which has substance and is influenced

by soul music especially inspires me.

Who would you like to collaborate with?

Oooh. There’a s lot of people who are supporting

me here tonight at the Deaf Institute who I’d love to

work with – Miss 600, who are a fantastic duo from

Derby. I also love Sam Gray – I sang backing vocals

for him on his album and we did BBC Breakfast

together and Loose Women, so I’d love to work

with him. And equally Bird to Beast are fantastic as

well. There’s such a great wealth of talent in

Manchester and I’d love to work with as many as

possible who inspire me.

The way you were discovered is almost the stuff of

legends. Tell us a little about that.

It wasn’t an instant ‘boom’ you’ve made it. I’m

doing my best every day to be the best possible

performer I can and to reach as many people with

my music as I can but it was a really cool way of

getting ‘spotted’. I was busking on the streets of

Manchester with my guitarist, Ben Williams, and we

just did it after we graduated from Popular Music

and Recording at Salford and thought we really

want to do music - let’s see if we can earn a living,

see what doors open and one massive door opened

for a competition called BBC Radio Five Live Busk

Idol and we won it, which was incredible because

people who were listening to Five Live called in and

voted for us. So that really opened loads of doors,

and I went on to do a duet with Chris de Burgh, and

went around Europe with him, performing to 8000

people a night in arenas – that was an absolutely

incredible experience. And I kept on doing as much

as I could, signed a record deal back in 2010 and

then last January we decided mutually that it was

the right time to leave after they had released one

single but things had gone a bit quiet and I thought I

really wanted to progress with my music and

release music, so I took the copyrights back and it’s

“It was a really cool way of getting

‘spotted’.”

being released today, which is an incredible,

incredible experience.

Your enthusiasm for tonight is very clear.

Yeah, I’m made up that people who I really

admire have wanted to come and support me. A

lot of them have absolutely massive fanbases

and in their own right have performed to

thousands of people so to be able to have them

come to support me and this gig means a lot.

What’s your favourite thing about performing

live?

I love the instant feedback you get from the

audience. I know it’s sometimes better to try not

to look at people when you’re performing

because if you make eye-contact it can

sometimes be really off-putting (laughs). I think

you can experience the vibe, it’s almost spiritual,

you can’t really put your finger on it. Just

clapping and getting that instant feedback is

amazing. I love recording in studios, but it’s a lot

harder because

you don’t know

how people are

going to react,

but this way

you can find

out which

songs are their

favourite and if

a song really

means

something to

someone and

they have the

courage to come up and say something that’s

amazing.

Tell us a bit about your charity work for

Centrepoint.

Centrepoint is a fantastic charity who give hope

and future to young homeless people. I initially

got introduced to the charity because I was

invited to perform at their sleepout. I was so

bowled over by the work they do that I wanted

to raise awareness and funds for them. I went on

a busking tour around the UK with my guitarist

Ben Williams setting up in different city centres

with our caravan battery, inverter and amp and

plugging in and performing in front of new

people. We also landed the support tour at Kew

Gardens opening for the likes of Will Young and

Nile Rogers bigging up Centrepoint and inviting

people to text their donation to the charity to

help with the work they do. I'm proud to be an

ambassador for Centrepoint. I'm blessed to have

been brought up in a supportive family and

always having that support and knowledge I'm

T hree fantastic bands and artists

supported the Kristyna Myles gig – Miss

First up incredible

and David Amar).

Miss 600 have

enjoyed increasing

exposure and seen

their reputation

grow over the last

few years, their

singles Twist and

Typically Me both

being championed

by BBC Radio 2. They have also hit the spotlight

in more unconventional ways, performing live on

Poland’s version of “Dancing With The Stars” and

even unexpectedly catching their music being

used on Crufts! With their mix of jazz/pop/blues/

electro-swing, Miss600 put on a wonderful live

performance. A second studio album ‘Swing Ting’

is expected in 2014

– make a beeline

for it and any

chance you get to

see them live!

Next up was Sam

Gray. With two

albums to his

name, Hull-born

Manchester based

Sam Gray, showed

his talents for singing and songwriting, armed

with just a guitar and a microphone in a great

acoustic set. Counting his inspirations as

including the likes of Simon and Garfunkel and

Stevie Wonder, his music is clearly ‘retro-

inspired’, catchy and intoxicating. It was also no

surprise that his performance left the females in

the crowd swooning.

The final act before Kristyna, was married folk

duo Bird to Beast, from Colne, whose vocals and

harmonies were second to none. Listing their

inspirations as including French pop, Andrew

Bird, Kate Bush, Nic Jones, Rufus Wainwright and

more, and with an album described as the ‘best

album of 2013’ by the Manchester Evening News,

Bird to Beast were fresh from an appearance on

BBC Radio 6. Playing a great set and with good

humour, Bird to Beast are definitely an act to

catch live.

MUSIC

Then came the marquee moment as Kristyna took

to the stage to perform her debut album in full.

What followed was a stirring display of musical

ability and agility before an enthralled crowd.

Drawing on influences such as India.Arie, Lauryn

Hill and Stevie Wonder, her music is soulful, with

clear jazz and pop influences. With no weak links,

the album is a stunning collection of tracks from a

singer-songwriter clearly passionate about her

music and performance, showing genuine

enthusiasm and a complete lack of pretention.

Kristyna performs on stage with a professionalism

which belies the fact that this is her debut album.

Kristyna took fans through a range of styles from

ballads such as Three Little Words, and soulful

delight Sorrow through to anthemic I’m Not Going

Back via a hauntingly beautiful version of The

Style Council’s The Paris Match, approved of by

Paul Weller himself. Her music is very personal,

drawing frequently on her own experiences to

form a very intimate album.

Interacting with the fans with ease, mingling

throughout the evening, Kristyna was clearly in her

element and relishing every moment, as were all in

attendance.

With a phenomenal album and incredible live

performance incorporating immense vocal ability,

stage presence and charisma which would be the

envy of many artists several albums along, Kristyna

is clearly an artist to follow. If you get the

opportunity to see her live, grab yourself a ticket!

WHITWORTH ART GALLERY

REDEVELOPMENT SPECIAL

MUSEUMS AND ART

T he Whitworth Art Gallery is currently

undergoing a £15 million renovation

and will re-open its doors to the

public on 25th October 2014.

The Gallery has been a feature of the Whitworth

Park landscape since it was founded in 1889, in

memory of Sir Joseph Whitworth, one of the

North West’s great industrialists. It was

originally a voluntary cultural, educational and

technical institution and over the decades that

followed, developed and grew into one of the

city’s principal cultural entities, housing

collections of international importance.

Today, the gallery is undergoing an extensive

revamp and expansion that will bring it firmly

into the twenty first century. At the heart of the

whole project, is the fact that the gallery building

is housed within the beautiful greenery of

Whitworth Park, and so the vision of MUMA

(McInnes Usher McKnight Architects who have

undertaken the project), has been to create a

permeability and transparency between the

gallery building and the surrounding trees and

greenery of the park.

In previous years, the galleries of the Whitworth

had false ceilings installed in order to

accommodate the need for air-conditioning in

the building. Now, the galleries are being

restored to their 1908 forms, exposing barrel

ceilings and views of the Park as air-conditioning

is replaced by the use of ground source heat

pumps, earth tubes and buffering that will create

a more stable environment.

MUSEUMS AND ART

The Grand Hall too, will retain its early 1900s

features and will be a public space, able to be

used for performances, recitals and films.

Two new wings will extend into the park from

the back of the existing building and these will be

connected by a glass promenade. In front of the

new wings, will be an art garden which will flow

into the park space. The intent is to create a

sense of openness, for example the café area

with its floor to ceiling windows which look out

onto the park. In the summer, these will reflect

the trees and the light to give the illusion that

the café is floating in the tree canopy. Visitors

will be able to sit and relax, whilst still being able

to see all that is going on around them both in

the park on one side and in the gallery on the

other – people taking classes, working with

collections etc.

Visitors to the park will be able to see into the

building – an open welcome to the community

and all to come in and view the collections that

are there for everyone to enjoy and the creation

of a sense that the gallery is opened up to the

people in the park and that the park is part of

the gallery.

The art garden has been designed by Sarah Price,

a landscape architect who was also one of the

designers of the Olympic Park. Her vision will see

low cloud planting and wild flowers streaming

from the art garden, out into the park. On the

other side of the brick wing, there will also be an

orchard garden. This will be a semi-public space,

though people will need to come into the gallery

in order to get to it. It will be a quiet space for

people to reflect and contemplate and in

conjunction with Friends of Whitworth Park, the

garden will also be able to contribute to

biodiversity work promoting bird and insect life.

In particular, this will be through the keeping of

bee hives (some of the Whitworth staff are

trained bee keepers) and so we will soon see the

production and sale of Whitworth honey!

The Arts Council of England is also supporting the

redevelopment of the gallery entrance which will

see a new, fully pedestrianised approach, a

sculpture terrace and fresh landscaping, also by

Price.

Those driving down Denmark Road, will also be

able to admire the design in the new brickwork,

with detail taken from a sixteenth century textile

piece, bringing a little art to the outside of the

building also.

Once work is completed on the gallery, it will

reopen to the public in October 2014 with a

brand new lead solo exhibition from acclaimed

MUSEUMS AND ART

British contemporary artist, Cornelia Parker. The

exhibit at the Whitworth will be her largest show

to date and Parker will also be creating

something quite special for the opening night. As

an artist, Parker is fond of collaborating with non

-artists in pursuit of creating her distinctive

pieces and being a gallery that is closely tied to

the University of Manchester, Parker has been

able to take advantage of the opportunity to

work with Nobel Prize winner Kostya Novoselov

who, along with Andre Geim, earned the

prestigious award for their work on graphene –

the thinnest and strongest known material.

With the help of Novoselov, Parker has been

extracting graphite from some of the great

drawing works held by the Gallery (most notably

Blake, Turner, Constable & Picasso, as well as a

pencil-written letter by Sir Ernest Rutherford,

who split the atom in Manchester) and turning it

into graphene. The graphene will then be used in

a work of art – a Blake-graphene sensor which

will be activated by breath like a switch. The

switch will set off a firework meteorite shower

over Whitworth Park, which will be part of the

celebration of the opening night of the

exhibition!

Alongside Cornelia Parker, will be several other

exhibitions, which we will look at in a future

feature as the grand re-opening date

approaches. Watch this space for more

information!

From the War of Nature

Manchester Museum

I n commemoration of the start of World War

I, Manchester Museum is hosting a new

exhibition exploring the struggle for existence in

the Natural World.

From the War of Nature opens on 11th April 2014

and takes its inspiration from the 1914 centenary

(the concept of war and conflict) and draws upon

recent scientific discovery, to create an exhibition

based on the relationships between living things,

the conflicts and challenges faced in the natural

world and their resolutions.

The title for the exhibition was derived from

Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species, which

eminently detailed how the evolution of plants

and animals developed by means of natural

selection. i.e. survival of the fittest. The ‘war’ of

nature.

The exhibition is designed to illustrate that war, is

in fact not an inevitable outcome of conflict and

that despite all species of living things on earth

having to fight to keep their place in the

evolutionary chain, they also find ways of co-

existing, co-operating and collaborating,

sometimes by means of co-dependency and

hence avoidance of conflict is possible. In a

similar way, this is much like the day-to-day

battles faced by us, as humans, in both our own

personal lives and social spaces as well as on a

global scale.

'Struggle for Existence', George Bouverie Goddard, 1879 © National Museums Liverpool.

Page 36: Live Manchester Magazine April 2014 Edition

MUSEUMS AND ART

We are also faced with questions about how we,

as humans, co-exist with the nature that

surrounds us. There are many species on earth

that face extinction, often due to environmental

changes and destruction that we are causing in

our own continued march of supremacy over the

planet – is there any hope of reversing the

damage that we are doing?

The answer, thankfully, is yes. However, it means

that we all need to make some space for nature

in our lives. We need to conserve precious

resources and help to protect the plant and

animal life around us so that the diverse nature of

life on our planet can be sustained - in spite of

the struggles and conflicts faced by us all.

Henry McGhie, Head of Collections and curator of

Zoology said:

‘The old view of nature red in tooth and claw is no

more ‘real’ than a view of a peaceful nature, or of

many other kinds of relationships. Individual

plants and animals live in conflict with one

another, where they want different things. But

more often than not they divide resources up, or

avoid actual aggression. The common usage of

the word ‘conflict’ loses those subtleties, but it is

surely reassuring to think that people, with great

capacity for empathy and collaboration, are not

consigned to behave in any particular way, or to

justify that by saying it is somehow ‘natural’.

MUSEUMS AND ART

Dr Nick Merriman, Director of Manchester

Museum said:

'The exhibition reminds us that humans, through

their exploitation of land and animals, are the

cause of some of the conflict that we see in the

natural world. It is our responsibility, therefore to

support conservation efforts, and to consider the

impact we have when we use natural resources.'

The exhibition shows new taxidermy specimens

displaying animal behaviours including: a wolf,

boxing hares, starlings being chased by a sparrow

hawk and a mole and blackbird fighting over a

worm.

From the War of Nature (#WarofNature) will run

from 11 April 2014 to 7 September 2014 in the

Museum's temporary exhibitions gallery.

MUSEUMS AND ART

A five year, city-wide project is currently

underway in Manchester called Wonder Women:

Radical Manchester. The project is inspired by the

suffragette movement which began here in the

city, alongside the Trades Union movement,

socialism and workers’ rights and is designed to

focus on both the historical and contemporary

role and representation of women in Britain

today.

The People’s History Museum is leading the

venture, which will bring together the efforts of

the museums, galleries and cultural organisations

of Manchester, alongside many others. As part of

this project, PHM is holding an exhibition,

Vanishing for the Vote, exploring the events

leading up to the night of Sunday 2nd April 1911 –

census night.

VANISHING FOR THE VOTE

PEOPLE’S HISTORY MUSEUM

Page 39: Live Manchester Magazine April 2014 Edition

MUSEUMS AND ART

The Liberal government at the time was insistent

that every household had to comply with the

requirements of the census. As women at that

time were not even permitted to vote in

elections, they were encouraged by suffragette

organisations to boycott it and so on that night,

thousands of women either stayed away from

the family home, were not listed on the census

by the head of the household or even went into

hiding to avoid being counted. Such was the case

of Emily Wilding Davison, a militant suffragette

activist, who hid in a cupboard in the Houses of

Parliament! Other women chose to write ‘Votes

for Women’ boldly across their census forms.

The exhibition takes its inspiration from the book

of the same name by researcher, historian and

author Dr Jill Liddington, who is also holding a

talk and book-signing as part of the Manchester

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

M aking her Royal Exchange

directing debut is Maria Aberg,

bringing us what is widely

considered to be one of Shakespeare’s best

comedies, Much Ado About Nothing.

Written in 1598, the play concentrates on the

stories of two pairs of young lovers, Benedick

and Beatrice (the primary characters) and

Claudio and Hero.

The start of the play sees Benedick and Beatrice

engaged in a ‘merry war’ of wit, as each of them

declares their disdain for love and one another.

This is set in contrast to our first meeting with

Claudio and Hero, a couple who are clearly head-

over-heels in love with one another, and whose

blind love is tested at the alter as they are about

to wed.

The title of the play, Much Ado About Nothing,

is actually read as ‘Much Ado About Noting’ ,

where noting actually means gossip,

eavesdropping and rumour and just as is true in

real life, these are the things that damage a good

relationship which Benedick and Beatrice then

join forces to repair. It is the wise and witty

banter of these two protagonists that really

delight in this performance and of course, the

results that their reparations have on the futures

of both couples.

The cast includes Gerard Kearns as Claudio (best

known for his role as Ian Gallagher in

Shameless), Paul Ready as Bendick (making his

Royal Exchange debut) and Ellie Piercey as

Beatrice.

LORD OF THE FLIES

THEATRE & STAGE

B ringing William Golding’s

classic novel to the stage, is

Matthew Bourne’s fantastic

dance company, NEW ADVENTURES.

Now an established fixture on many a School’s

English literature reading lists, Golding’s novel

tells the story of a group of well-educated boys

who are the sole survivors when their plane crash

lands during a war-time evacuation, marooning

them on a paradisiacal island, alone, with only

their wits to survive on. The story tells of their

attempts at self-governance and their

subsequent descent into savagery in a novel that

has earned its place on a many a ‘top 100’

reading list.

Bourne, who has made a name for himself as a

master of choreography and theatrical dance,

brings New Adventures dancers to the Lowry

stage, in a captivating production that brings Lord

of The flies to life through dance, the paradise

island reinvented as a deserted theatre where

the boys find themselves abandoned.

‘Golding’s legendary characters are imbued with

raw energy, emotional intensity and breathtaking

performances. Civilisation crumbles, the rulebook

is forgotten and the story builds to an electrifying

climax.’ (lowry.com).

Groups of 10 +: £2 discount on the adult ticket

price for Friday & Saturday evening, £2.50

discount on all other performances. You also

receive 1 in 10 tickets free, and there are no

booking fees! Click here for more information on

group bookings.

Tickets for schools available from only £13. Call

0843 208 6003 for more information.

THE PERFECT MURDER

THEATRE & STAGE

F resh from starring in the West-End

production of Spamalot, much loved

actor and entertainer Les Dennis joins

the cast of The Perfect Murder, which is now

touring the UK.

This is the first time that international bestselling

crime thriller novelist, Peter James, has had his

work adapted for the stage.

Directed by Olivier Award winner Ian Talbot, The

Perfect Murder tells the story of married couple,

Victor and Joan Smiley, ironically named as there

is little joy left in this marriage union when we

meet these characters. Victor secretly loathes his

wife Joan and is getting attention elsewhere.

Joan is getting driven mad by Victor’s irritating

ways and is bored of their relationship. Victor

decides that there is only one way to get Joan

out of his life forever, but then finds himself in

for an unpleasant surprise.

Peter James commented on the first stage adaptation of his work:

"My parents took me to the Theatre Royal in

Brighton almost every week of my childhood, and

I dreamed of one day having a play of my own

work produced. This is now truly a dream come

true, and I could not wish to be with a more

stellar group of people, including my wonderful

co-producer Josh Andrews, writer Shaun

McKenna who has done such a terrific adaptation

and Ian Talbot who is a fantastic director. And I

do not think we could have a more perfect,

murderously wonderful cast!"

Starring alongside Les Dennis will be Claire Goose

(who starred in the BBC hit series Waking the

Dead and Casualty as well as ITV’s The Bill and

most recently SKY TV’s comedy-drama Mount

Pleasant); Gray O’Brien, (who recently enjoyed

an award-winning three years in Coronation

Street and has also starred in the TV series

Titanic, Peak Practice and Casualty as well as in

the West End in Sleuth); Steven Miller (who

starred as Lenny Lyons for three years in

Casualty and whose theatre credits include The

Lord of The Rings at London’s Drury Lane and

Blackwatch); and finally Simona Armstrong (who

the public took to their hearts in BBC’s How Do

You Solve a Problem Like Maria).

THE OPERA HOUSE Showing from 15th until 19th April Tickets: £11.90—£32.90

THEATRE & STAGE

The Last 5 Years

Showing at the Kings Arms Salford from 7—13 April The Last 5 Years is a song-cycle musical chronicling a

five year marriage—from meeting and falling in love to breaking-up. The musical was written by Jason

Robert Brown and explores the relationship between a writer and his actress wife, from the point of view

of each of them.

Move It!

Taking place at the Dancehouse on Oxford Road on 12 April, Move It! is a danceshow featuring acts as

varied as tap, jazz, bellydancing and Chinese dancing. The show features performers (groups and soloists)

from the regular evening classes which take place at the Dancehouse, including the ever excellent KNT

Danceworks.

Sweeney Todd

The demon barber of Fleet Street is back in this performance at Z-Arts laid on by a cast made up entirely

of students from Musical Youth UK. Showing from 30 April until 3rd May, the story tells of Benjamin

Barker, a wronged barber sent to a penal colony in Australia and returns to London to seek vengeance on

those who tore his family apart.

20th Century Boy

The story of rock legend Marc Bolan is the inspiration for this new musical, featuring some of the greatest

songs ever written and telling the story of Marc Bolan and T Rex. Starring Sue Jenkins, Luke Bailey and

Warren Sollars, this takes stage at the Opera House from 22-26 April and is a stunning show which will

have the audience on its feet and dancing.
