"No sense

being pessi-

mistic about something, it proba-

bly wouldn't have worked any-

way!" -Author Unknown-

“Once again, there has been a lot

of activity at Post 6, and most of it

being done since the tremendous

rain storm earlier this sum-

mer. The roof of the canteen took

on most of the damage, and now

the entire canteen ceiling is being

redone, as well as some improve-

ments to the pool/shuffleboard

area. By the time you get to read

this, work should be complete, so

stop by and see the "new look"!

Last month, I asked if someone

would step up and take the duties

of getting our newsletter together

from Bob and Lee McClain, and

Richard Jefferson has stepped up

to the challenge. Thank you Rich-

ard for taking this on, you'll find

not everyone has their articles

ready two weeks in advance the

way I do, just give them time to

improve!

This fall the kitchen will be

opening Friday nights, and vari-

ous groups will be serving din-

ner. This will be done by all of the

American Legion, regular mem-

bers, SAL, and the Ladies Auxil-

iary. If you can't find the time to

help (a couple hours once a

month), then come on out and

support the cause by buying a

dinner plate, and spreading the

word to others you know.

In closing, I hope you're having

a great summer, and I hope eve-

ryone has a chance to stop by the

"new and improved" can-

teen. Invite a friend (don't forget

to sign them in!), come on out for

a Friday night dinner, or even join

the shuffleboard league starting

this fall. Be optimistic for a

change, and come on out and

help make things work, for the

good of the Post and the Ameri-

can Legion.

Charles Michel

September is a big

month for the kids—

Seaford night out is on

Sept. 29th. Starting at

5 PM. A lot of work is

being undertaking at

the Post, so please be

patient. Labor day is

around the corner so

be safe out there. Re-

member, school is

starting up so watch

out for the kids walking

to school and school

busses on the road-

ways. The American

Legion can only be as

strong as it’s members

allow, so please attend

our meetings and try to

get involved in our pro-

grams.

Hi folks, I want to thank my

fundraising committee for the

fine job they did on the pig roast,

we didn't do as well as we

wanted to but we know

why. We have more chicken

bbqs coming up and a dinner

on Sept, 16th with delicious soft

shell crab sandwiches and

boardwalk fries, Keep an eye

on the marquee. We could use

some help from our SAL mem-

bers, so come to the meetings

on the first Wednesday of the

month and give us your input

and volunteer. It's hot out there

so make sure you hydrate and

remember to smile. A special

thanks to my Squadron 6 offi-

cers, they are the best

Labor Day: What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Labor Day Legislation

Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first govern-

mental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886.

From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was in-

troduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon

on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts,

New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By

the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By

1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of

that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a

legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

Summer is going fast but we did get a few things done at the Post. Due to water damage, the roof at the

Post was replaced and the ceiling in the canteen was replaced as well. We are looking at removing the

carpet in the canteen and replacing it with tile, etc. We need to make clear a couple of canteen rules. 1.

— Nobody is allowed behind the bar except employees and members of the bar committee. 2.—At last

call, all machine play stops and tickets or slips have to be cashed in immediately. 3.— If the juke box is

playing, it will shut down 5 minutes before closing. If you can’t follow rules 1 & 2, expect a suspension of

your club privileges for an extended period of time.
