On Saturday, November 7, Lutheran High School will be holding the annual Harvest Fair bazaar and luncheon. We need many donated items to restock more than 20 booths for this fall. You can help now by setting aside some of the things we need or by dropping them off at school. Here is what we need: any handmade or homemade items, home-canned goods like pickles and jam, vegetables/fruit, bakery, antiques and collectibles, needlecrafts, linens, fine handbags/purses, sports gear and sports memorabilia, toys, dolls, jewelry, scarves, home decorative items, gifts, books, cookbooks, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorative items. Items need to be new or in excellent condition. Thank you for thinking ahead to help us make this year’s Harvest Fair another big success for our school and students!

School News *RLHS Harvest Fair Needs Your Help! On Saturday, November 7, Lutheran High School will be holding the annual Harvest Fair bazaar and luncheon. We need many donated items to restock more than 20 booths for this fall. You can help now by setting aside some of the things we need or by dropping them off at school. Here is what we need: any handmade or homemade items, home-canned goods like pickles and jam, vegetables/fruit, bakery, antiques and collectibles, needlecrafts, linens, fine handbags/purses, sports gear and sports memorabilia, toys, dolls, jewelry, scarves, home decorative items, gifts, books, cookbooks, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorative items. *The RLHS Grand Gala, our annual dinner, dance and auction fund-raising event, will be held Saturday, February 13. We are seeking committee members and volunteers. Upcoming meeting dates are Monday, November 9, December 7 and January 4 at 6 p.m. in the Learning Center. All are welcome! The Grand Gala is also in need of donations, especially for our voice auction. Do you have connections that could help us secure items such as: vacation home/condo rentals, unique art, time shares, airline tickets, adventure packages, recreational vehicles and equipment (boat, motorcycle, grill, etc.), jewelry, pampering experiences, and weekend/day excursions? Do you use your RacineLutheran.org email? Do you receive the Weekly News via email from Susie Drummond every Monday? (Note – this is different than the PowerSchool updates or Daily Bulletin.) All families received access information for both PowerSchool and the RacineLutheran.org email system at Back-to-School Night. You are expected to stay informed, and we have these tools in place to benefit your family. News from the Athletic Office – Jason Block

*Fall sports regional playoff information: Girls volleyball--Tuesday, at Prairie, at 7 p.m. Second round at Christian Life on Thursday. Boys soccer--Thursday, at Pershing Park at 4 p.m. vs. Martin Luther. Next game would be at Score on Saturday. Admission for all regional games is $4. No passes are accepted. *This is the time to prepare for winter sports! Do not wait until the last minute to get cleared to play. You will need a clearance card from the Athletic Office to participate. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CLEARANCE CARD TO GIVE TO THE COACH AT THE FIRST PRACTICE, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE. TO RECEIVE A CLEARANCE CARD, athletes must turn in the following to the athletic office prior to the first practice: 1) Physical clearance form for grades 9 and 11, or alternate year permission card for grades 10 and 12; 2) RLHS Athletics Agreement;

News from the Admissions Office – Susie Drummond *Student Ambassadors should plan to work at the Open House on Sunday, October 25, from 11:45 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. (The actual Open House runs from 12 noon until 2 p.m.) *Current families – please contact Mrs. Drummond if you have a child in 8th grade. We want to make sure we provide you with enrollment information and reserve a seat for your son or daughter.

News from the Academic/Guidance Office – Dan Jensen and Mark Jones *The official college acceptances have begun! Congratulations! Mikhala Milow accepted to Concordia University Wisconsin. (Note – Students should inform Mr. Jensen when they are accepted to colleges and/or offered scholarships.) *Gateway Technical College (GTC) is providing a New Student Specialist to RLHS. Mr. A.J. Laird will have office hours two days each month. His services will augment those of our guidance and academic counselors. Our students are encouraged to meet with him to discuss their future college and career opportunities, even if they are not planning to attend GTC. Mr. Laird will be here on October 23, November 6 and 20, December 2 and 16, January 6 and 20, February 3 and 17, March 2 and 16, April 13 and 27, May 11 and 25, and June 8, if needed. *Students interested in improving their ACT scores may want to consider taking a Wisconsin Test Prep Class. The fee is $155 for a 7-week, 16-hour course. Courses will be offered at Case, Shoreland, Union Grove, Burlington, and Wilmot high schools. Interested students can also pick up a pamphlet from Mr. Jensen for more information. *A Navy Recruiter will visit RLHS during the lunch hours on November 10, December 8, January 12, February 9, March 8, April 12 and May 10. *Manufacturing Expo Tour is scheduled for Thursday, October 22, from 8 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the SC Johnson iMET Center, 2320 Renaissance Boulevard. *Careers for Christ Weekend – High school sophomores, juniors and seniors who are interested in becoming church professionals are invited to register for Concordia University Chicago’s Careers for Christ Weekend from November 6 through 8. To learn more, visit CUChicago.edu/C4C.

*The Wisconsin Elks Association has announced the Most Valuable Student Scholarship contest for 2015-16. There will be 12 awards of $4,000 each ($1,000 per year for four years), and the Wisconsin Benevolent Fund provides 10 awards of $1000 (one-time scholarship). Applications must be downloaded at www.elks.org/enf/scholarships/mvs.cfm. Applications are judged on scholarship (ACT or SAT), transcript, leadership, and financial need. Deadline is December 4. Mr. Jensen will announce this to the seniors, and parents can contact him if they have any additional questions. *The Racine Optimist Club is offering two $2,000 scholarships based on a student’s personal essay, participation in school and/or community activities, financial need and academic record. The student must have a non-weighted GPA between 3.0 and 3.5 and be accepted into a four-year college at the time of the award. Students must fill out an application, type a personal essay, submit one letter of recommendation, and submit a transcript with 7 semesters of classwork. They are also awarding two $1,000 scholarships to a students enrolled in an associate degree program at a technical college. Criteria are the same for this scholarship. *Horatio Alger Scholarship – The applicant must be a full-time senior with plans to pursue a bachelor's degree; demonstrate critical financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income); involvement in co-curricular and community services or activities; display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity; minimum GPA of 2.0; and be a U.S. citizen. Student may apply at scholars.horatioalger.org, and a copy of the first page of the applicant’s parents’ federal tax return is needed. See Mr. Jensen if you have additional questions. *FAFSA Information: Parents who will be filling out FAFSA should attend one of several professional workshops sponsored by College Goal Wisconsin 2016. Seniors will be given times and dates for these workshops so parents make sure you ask your senior for the handout. The workshop offers free and professional on-site assistance for the completion of the FAFSA. The closest sites for these workshops are Kenosha Gateway (2/17/16) Racine Gateway (2/24/16); Oak Creek MATC (2/13/16), and UW-Parkside (2/20/16).

*University of Wisconsin informational videos are available at uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/videos. These videos range from information on each campus to information on financial aid. You can also go to You Tube and look up University of Wisconsin Journey to Financial Aid for additional information. *Parents of seniors: Seniors can contact Mr. Jensen to request transcripts for college applications. Required forms are located in the outer area of the Guidance Office, and need to be completed and returned to him. Transcripts are usually mailed out within two days of receiving the proper form. Please be patient. UW schools may take up to six to eight weeks to make a decision. Private colleges and universities, and technical schools often take three to four weeks. Contact Mr. Jensen if you have additional questions.

*Parents of seniors: Some colleges and universities have early acceptance, usually by December 1 of the school year, and offer special monies for those students. Please contact the admissions office of the colleges or universities your senior wants to attend and find out what advantages, if any, early acceptance offers.

Special Opportunities *Pentecost Lutheran Church, 2213 Coolidge Avenue, will have its Craft Fair on Saturday, October 24, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. A tasty lunch plus crafts, bake and plant sales will be available. *On Tuesday, October 27, from 4 until 8 p.m., Concordia Lutheran PTL and Rocky Rococo’s (in Racine) have teamed up for a Dine & Donate night. Bring the voucher and present it upon placing your order, and 15% of your purchase will be donated to Concordia. You can dine-in, carry-out, or drive-thru…it doesn’t get much easier to support your school! Email [email protected] to have a voucher sent to you.
