My name is Emily Sheehan. I am a 2019 graduate of Parkview High School currently serving as your 2019-2020 State Sentinel. I grew up on my family’s registered Holstein dairy farm and have been showing cows since I was 3 years old. This led me to my first SAE, dairy placement, which enabled me to further my love for all things dairy. I then was able to add an additional SAE of Agricultural Education to the list. I started a semi-annual Ag in the Classroom at my school where we teach our 3rd through 6th graders about many different aspects of agriculture. Some other FFA activities that I participated in throughout high school included quiz bowl, prepared speaking, extemporaneous speaking, discussion, dairy judging CDE, meetings, conferences and numerous others. I may not have been state level in all of these events especially right away but each event was a chance to grow myself and to me that is what FFA is all about, growing yourself and helping those around you to do the same. Serving as your sentinel will put my college plans on hold for a year. When they resume I plan to go to Winona State University where I will major in nursing, minor in spanish and then after college I plan to join the peace corps. I am really looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you throughout my year of service!

Keeping up with the State Officers...It feels like the year has just begun, but we are already over 2 months into State Office and loving every second of it! The State FFA Officers have been keeping busy this summer with all sorts of events such as...

Base Camp- Our first event as a team was held in Marshfield, Wisconsin where we were able to bond over food, laughs, and broken toys. We spent the week with an amazing National Facilitator and past National Officer, Gracie Furnish. We talked about our strengths and weaknesses but more importantly how they can be best used to serve our teammates and serve Wisconsin FFA!

WAAE PDC- The simple truth is that I as well as all of my peers would not be here if it wasn’t for the influence and support of our ag teachers and FFA advisors. They are the ones preparing the next generation of agriculturalists and what an honor it was to be able to spend a week with them in LaCrosse for the Wisconsin Association of Agricultural Educators Professional Development Conference. During this week we were able to introduce ourselves to not only the ag teachers and FFA advisors in our Section but from all across the state.

Checkpoint #1- Back to Marshfield for another week spent together as a team and with our inspiring National FFA Facilitator Gracie Furnish. During this week we focused on workshop development as well as some other skills that will help this year run smoothly. We also tested our communication skills out during an escape room where we escaped with just 45 seconds left!

Washington D.C. Summit- Flying to the Nation's Capital together was an incredible adventure that our team had. Traveling together is always fun and such a good time for friendships to strengthen especially when embarking to new destinations, such as Washington D.C. was for me! Summit is held for all State Officers across the Nation, meeting with these individuals allowed us to make connections all across the United States and even Puerto Rico! It was such an eye opening experience to learn about how each state runs their organizations. We had the opportunity to meet with Representative Mark Pocan as well as Senator Ron Johnson’s staff to inform them about FFA and CTE (Career and Technical Education).

Golf Outing- There was lots of laughter, lots of golfing, lots of sun, and lots of fun when Grace, Michelle, Jared, and I spent the day at the (BLANK) golf course in (BLANK). We were able to meet ag teachers and sponsors from all around the area while running fundraiser competitions at different holes throughout the course. I ran a putting competition with Michelle and we had so much fun seeing everyone come out to support FFA!

Can you keep up with the State Officers? We’re not done yet!

Page 6: LIVE FROM FIVE - Wisconsin Ag Ed...I grew up on my family’s registered Holstein dairy farm and have been showing cows since I was 3 years old. This led me to my first SAE, dairy

Summer is almost over!Wisconsin State Fair- The State Officer team was tasked with informing the public, both young and old about the differences between vegetables in the Veggie 500 races! We raced vegetable carts down a track to see what veggie was fastest! We also were able to talk to people about the exciting world of Aquaponics where fish waste is recycled into fertilizer to grow vegetables in water. We also informed people of the importance of ear tagging our livestock which helps us identify them and keep accurate records. Last, but certainly not least, was l

Jag Lake Retreat- 11 fun filled days of State Fair was enough for the State Officer team, as much as we all loved it, we were ready for a change of pace. Luckily that is exactly what Jag Lake offered us. We spent 4 days camping up north where we worked to finish up our workshops, SLW speeches, and even this newsletter! But in the midst of all this work, we definitely didn’t forget to have some fun along the way! We played some intense sand volleyball,

letting kids ride the pony cycles around, which is always a big hit with kids of all ages! Heck the State Officer team even loved riding them!

challenged our team mates to some basketball, caught some fish, relaxed in a hammock and Collin, Joe, and I even made the swim out to an island in the lake. We also enjoyed making and eating a 12 foot long banana split.

While my team and I were attending the Wisconsin Association of Agricultural Educators Professional Development Conference we released our theme video. If you haven’t had a chance to see

that yet I encourage you to go to the Wisconsin FFA Section 5 facebook page and check it out! The FFA jacket, to each of us it means something different. It could represent friendship, hard work, team building, competition, networking, or it may not mean anything to you yet, which is okay, but for me, the FFA jacket represents unity. Unity within all 50 states, unity between chapters, but most importantly unity between members. When we put on that simple blue jacket we represent one organization, we

FFA builds leaders and leaders rise to the challenge at hand. FFA is your place to Rise Up to tackle any challenge and Stand Out in your own personalized blue jacket.

The 2019-2020 FFA State Theme is…

represent the 700,000 members that it houses nationwide. When we put on that blue jacket we are one, together. But each corduroy jacket holds something special, it holds something unique. It holds one FFA member, one story, one individual. In an organization where we all dress alike, it is up to us to find out own way to Rise Up and Stand out!.

Sectional Leadership Workshops are approaching quick and we hope you are as excited as we are about them! SLW’s are the perfect time for chapter officers to learn more about their duties and responsibilities as well as preparing members to be future leaders in whatever path they take in life! Our SLW theme is “Start Your Engines”. Ready yourself to rev it up and get excited about the year to come!

Coming Up Quick!

Another fun event quickly approaching is the FIRE conference. All 7th, 8th, and 9th graders are encouraged to attend. The dates for FIRE conferences are October 5th at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton, October 12th at the UW River Falls campus, and October 19th at the UW Madison Campus. Our theme for this year's FIRE conference is FFAmily. When we first start FFA we may not know very many people and the ones we do may just simply be friends but throughout your FFA career, you find yourself not only calling those people friends but family.

92nd National Convention and Expo

Who is ready for the Sea of Blue, the incredible connections, the endless laughs, loud singing, the late nights, and LOADS of fun at the National FFA Convention this year in Indianapolis, Indiana?

October 28th - November 2nd

Don’t miss the rodeo, a hypnotist show, the Blue Room, some amazing General Sessions put on by our National Officers, keynote speakers Bob Goff and Michelle Poler. AND did I mention Old Dominion and Brett Young!!!

Your 2019-2020 National Officer Candidate is Amelia Hayden from the Big Foot FFA chapter! Amelia is dedicated to FFA and she is passionate about agriculture. The two years spent serving Wisconsin FFA and every one of its members have helped to prepare her to take on the role of National Officer. She has been preparing for the National selection process for a long time and she is beyond ready to represent Wisconsin and to serve National FFA. We are all so proud of the work that Amelia has put in and are excited to see what her future holds. Be sure to wish her luck as National Convention nears!

This year there are some new and exciting changes, the biggest one is that all of the sessions will be held in the Lucas Oil Stadium! While the concerts will be held in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
