Thank you to our Partners
NFC 12
the work of the FCA, including the national Franchise Convention would not be possible without the annual support of our Partners.
welcome
FCA Executive Director welcomes all to attend NFC 2012
Your conference; your time to be heard
this year the franchise community returns for its second visit to the nation’s capital, Canberra.
in 2005, John howard was in power and was the FCA convention’s no. 1 keynote speaker – this year, he’s back.
to kick off nFC12, former Prime minister John howard will provide a ‘then and now’ perspective on franchising, as well as leadership, in tough times and good. mr howard’s government introduced the Franchising Code of Conduct, and the sector has seen consistent outstanding growth since that time.
in 2013 we face the prospect of a review of franchising legislation leading into a federal election. And the policies of the political parties are not yet set. it is time to send a franchising message of strength.
this year’s FCA national convention offers a rare opportunity: to join with 250 franchise brands and have your voice heard in person by those who have power to seriously affect our future.
Along with mr howard, the impressive list of business speakers includes mark Bouris (financial services entrepreneur and tv show host), Christine Corbett (Australia Post) and stephen Doyle (formerly of Apple). Franchisor speakers include roger gillespie (Bakers Delight), geoff Davis (Wendys) and other members of the Franchise hall of Fame, plus top people from many of our biggest national brands.
the social program will give you the chance to mingle in King’s hall and have your photo taken in the speaker’s chair, or on the ministerial benches in Australia’s historic Old Parliament house. it is a great opportunity, not available to the public – so don’t miss out!

The creation and growth of Lollypotz – from start-up to franchisor
Louise Curtis Founder, lollypotz
After relocating to Canberra from sydney 11 years ago in her role as a mortgage Broker, louise found a niche in the gift giving market and started her own gift hamper company from home, hamperesque, in 2002. hamperesque is now considered one of the largest gift hamper companies in Australia and boasts an impressive national client base. louise’s achievements were recognised in 2008, with hamperesque winning the telstra small Business Award and louise also winning two telstra Business Womens’ Awards the same year. At the same time, the economy was entering the gFC and louise saw a need to diversify her product range and attract the retail market. lollypotz, a chocolate bouquet company, was launched as a national franchise operation and was based on the interflora concept of same day delivery across Australia and nZ. lollypotz was recently listed in the BrW as Australia’s fourth fastest growing franchise in terms of growth, and second fastest in terms of outlets, with 40 franchises nationally and three in new Zealand. louise now has a staff of 16 operating from Canberra, melbourne and sydney and spends a great deal of time travelling the country managing the franchised operations, as well as managing a busy family life with two young boys. in 2010 and 2011, louise was awarded the FCA’s nsW/ACt Franchise Woman of the year Award.
A key component to lollypotz’ success has been in mastering their online presence to attract clients, manage the logistics side of things, as well as reporting and communication. louise is excited about passing on her lessons learnt (and some of them have been expensive ones) so others can learn without needing to experience them.

John Howard OM AC
the honourable John Winston howard served as the 25th Prime minister of Australia from march 1996 until november 2007. he has been Australia’s second longest serving Prime minister. mr howard led the liberal Party of Australia for a total of 16 years. he was a member of the house of representatives for 33 years. Prior to becoming Prime minister, John howard had extensive senior experience in both government and opposition. he served as treasurer in a previous government and led his party in opposition for a number of years.
the federal government budget of Australia was in heavy deficit when mr howard’s government came to power. that deficit was eliminated, and 10 of the 12 annual budgets produced by the howard government were in surplus. in that time, $96 billion of federal government debt was repaid and the government was free of net debt when howard’s government left office.
the howard government undertook major reform of the Australian taxation system, through the introduction of a goods and services tax, accompanied by reductions in personal income tax and corporate tax rates. he also substantially reformed Australia’s labour laws, delivering a freer and less regulated labour market. Australia’s unemployment rate had fallen to 3.9%, a 33 year low, by the time howard left office.
in the field of foreign policy, Australia, under mr howard’s government, was both a strong and close ally of the united states, as well as expanding links with Asian nations. A particular feature of the howard government’s time in power was the development of the relationship with China, which is now Australia’s largest export market.
John howard was in Washington on an official visit at the time of the terrorist attack on 11 september 2001. he addressed a joint sitting of Congress in 2002. he currently serves as Chairman of the international Democratic union, an international grouping of centre/right parties including the republican Party.
John howard was born in sydney, Australia, on 26 July 1939, attending school at earlwood Primary and Canterbury Boys’ high. he went on to the university of sydney, graduated with a Bachelor of laws in 1961 and was admitted as a solicitor of the nsW supreme Court in July 1962. Prior to his election to Parliament he was a partner in a sydney firm of solicitors.
