In #1213 we read: Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission. “Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word.” FOR MORE INFORMATION on the Year of Faith go to www.dioceseofcleveland.org/yearoffaith. Pastor’s Corner: Although my 25th anniversary of priesthood is not until May, this week marks the anniversary 25 years ago when I was ordained a deacon. Prior to priesthood ordination I was ordained as a ‘transitional deacon’ as a step to the priesthood. I think I was more nervous at this ordination than I was when I was ordained a priest. It was at this time that I made the commitment to celibacy, obedience to the bishop, and praying for the People of God, the Church. As a deacon I could proclaim the Gospel

at Mass and preach, as well as baptize and officiate at weddings. I spent those 5 transitional months of ordination at St. Clarence Church in North Olmsted. These 25 years have flown by and it is amazing how much I have grown and experienced over these years. And each year keeps getting better! That is not to say that I do not have my challenges and struggles. However, responding to God’s call to the priesthood has brought meaning, purpose and fulfillment to my life. It has been your support and prayers that inspire me to continue to seek ways of serving God as an ordained minister. Thank you! Next weekend we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, and our baptism, where we were each called by God to serve. It is also National Vocation Awareness week. May we each seek to continue to be faithful to our vocation and in doing so experience meaning, purpose and fulfillment. Pray for those who are struggling to respond or are uncertain of God’s call in their lives. And especially pray for an increase in response to the call to the vocation of the priesthood and religious life.

The Ephipany of the Lord Page 3

EPHIPHANY: Heaven and earth bow down to the newborn Jesus. A star leaves its celestial course to shine above the birthplace of the Lord, foreign sages come to do him homage with rare and expensive gifts, and even King Herod senses that Christ’s true power outshines the importance of his royal throne. One of the first mysteries of our faith is that all this glory and power manifests itself in the simplicity of a stable, in a helpless infant born to two people without rank, traveling on their way to a national census. The glory of the Savior is found in the most common of places, in the most basic surroundings, among the simplest of people. This is Good News, revealing the radical pervasiveness of God’s grace, present to us in the most ordinary and everyday circumstances of our lives. No part of the human experience is too mundane for the presence of God.

(Sourcebook p. 52. Liturgy Training Publications) WELCOME! If you are interested in joining the parish there are registration forms by the bulletin board in the Gathering Area, or you can download a form from the parish web site (www.olqpgrafton.org) or call the parish office. There will also be a Welcome Weekend on January 26/27 which will have information about the parish. HOUSE BLESSING: There is a tradition on Epiphany and the beginning of a new year to bless your house. Next weekend at Mass there will be a packet available which you can use to bless your home. The blessing is associated with the magi whose names, according to tradition, are Caspar, Melchoir, and Balthazar. The numbers of the new year as well as the initials of the magi are written in chalk above the

door. (20 + C + M + B + 13). The letters also form an acronym: Christus mansionem benedicat (May God bless this house).

LITURGY/ART & ENVIRONMENT MEETING: The next meeting of the Liturgy Committee will be Monday, January 7th at 7:00pm in the parish hall. We will be evaluating the Advent and Christmas season and making plans for Lent which begins February 13th. The Art & Environment Committee will meet the same day at 8:00pm.

EVANGELIZATION MINISTRY MEETING: The newly organized Evangelization Ministry will meet in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, January 15 at 7:00pm to discuss new business during this monthly meeting. The ministry is looking for individuals to do various tasks to help promote and awaken our faith in the church and surrounding community. Many opportunities are available. For more information, please email Tami Mullins @ [email protected] or call 440-865-9086.

PARISH MISSION: Plans are well under way for the Parish Mission which will be February 24th, 25th and 26th. The theme of this 3 night mission is “Sacred Silence.” Mark your new 2013 calendar to attend one or all three nights!

Sister Kathleen’s Corner:

PARISH FAITH FORMATION: Uniting all persons into one human family seems to be a goal set before us almost from the beginning of time. The magi or kings link us people of power bending to serve Jesus. Until the end times, perhaps there will always be tension between the idea of power and of unity. Unity among the marginalized can use power to create justice. Many of us proclaim the belief that all should be treated without regard to race, creed, ethnic traditions, gender and so on. Is it harder for us to share our goods or our power?

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION: Have you spent time looking at a star lately? What does a star mean to you? The Three Kings of the Orient believed that the star would lead them to Jesus. They believed that to be with Jesus would make all the difference. Who are the stars in your life that leadyoutoseeJesus?Writethemonthestars.

LOOKING TO BE INVOLVED? There are many opportunities in the parish to live out your call from God to serve. From liturgical ministers to outreach ministers and everything in between there is something for everyone. And if you have a particular interest or gift that you wish to share but do not see a way of using it in the parish please let us know. We are constantly seeking to expand the services offered to meet the needs of the community. For instance there are three new activities and ministries we are looking to start: Valet Service: We are looking to provide a way for the elderly and handicap to still maintain their independence and at the same time to not have to struggle to walk across the parking lot to enter the church. In pulling up in front of the church they could leave their car and there would be a person who would park their car for them and bring it back to them after Mass. Parish Newsletter: A quarterly parish news letter is being looked into as a way to provide communication in addition to the weekly bulletin. This would be available both in print and electronic form. We are in need of editors as well as proof readers and assistance in mailing. Parish Directory: We are looking to make a parish pictorial directory and need assistance in all stages of organizing and putting this directory together. Scrip Team: We are looking to form a team of parishioners who would be available on a rotating schedule to sell SCRIP cards after Mass. This would be a once a month commitment and if we have enough volunteers every other month.

These three activities have been brought forward by the Parish Council. If you are interested in helping or learning more about any of the above, please call the parish office.
