To bring the Good News of Jesus into every human situation

and seeking to convert individuals and society by the divine power of the Gospel itself.

Defining Evangelization

[The Church] exists in order to evangelize…

to preach and teach, to be the channel of

the gift of grace,to reconcile sinners

with God, andto perpetuate

Christ’s sacrifice in the Mass.

Defining Evangelization

Therefore, all sons and daughters of the Church

should have a lively awareness of their responsibility to the world…

they should spend their forces in the work of evangelization.

--Ad Gentes 35, 366

Defining Evangelization

The Church is missionary by nature and

her principal task is evangelization,

which aims to proclaim and to witness

to Christ and to promote his Gospel of peace and love

in every environment and culture.--Address at Congress of Military Ordinariates

7

Defining the “New” Evangelization

The New Evangelization focuses specifically on those communities that have Catholic roots but have

‘lost a living sense of faith, or even no longer consider themselves members of the Church’

--Redemptoris Missio, 33

8

Encounter with Christ

I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment,

to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ,

or at least an openness to letting him encounter them;

I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day.

No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since

“no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord.” --Evangelii gaudium, 3

Rite-Based Approach

“In their preparation for marriage, the couple should be encouraged to makethe liturgical celebration a profound personal experienceand to appreciate the meaning of each of its signs.

In the case of two baptized persons, the commitment expressedby the words of consent and the bodily union that consummates the marriage can only be seen as signs of the covenantal love and union between the incarnate Son of God andhis Church.” --Amoris laetitia, 213

Rite-Based Approach

Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi, Lex Vivendi

What the Church prays,is what the Church believes, and is how the Church lives.

12

Rite-Based Approach

The active participation and practice of the liturgy, prayers, devotions, and popular piety of the Church provide a powerful witness to the faith.

Participation in Mass should be encouraged, as the Eucharist is the heart of the Church’s life.

By participating in Mass, learning common prayers, and practicing devotions, a person appropriates the teachings of the faith.

Discussion

After reflecting on the theology of Marriage as presented in the rite, in what ways can you teach from the rite itself?

How does the Entrance Procession as envisioned by the rite, teach couples and those present about Marriage? About faith?

What symbols/signs of unity are already present in the rite?

15

Evangelization Opportunities

Rite-Based ApproachSetting the Tone

• Revised Marriage rite –time for revaluation of parish practices (catechesis and liturgy)

• Liturgical implementation affects understanding, participation, and sets a precedence (parish / universal)

• Venue model vs. evangelizing model• Establish common ground• Set informative and “warm” policies

22

Rite-Based ApproachFor the Assembly

The marriage liturgy is a unique event, which is both a family and a community celebration. . . .

Frequently, the celebrant speaks to a congregation that includes people who seldom participate in

the life of the Church, or who are members of other Christian

denominations or religious communities. The occasion thus provides a valuable opportunity

to proclaim the Gospel of Christ. --Amoris laetitia, 216

A Rite-Based ApproachFor the Assembly

Liturgy not only continues to evangelize regular members of a particular congregation.

It can also be an occasion of invitation and conversion for a casual or an inquiring visitor.

--Stephen Bevans, Liturgical Companion to the Documents of the Second Vatican Council (Ad gentes)

30

Rite-Based ApproachMission

Led by the love of Christ, pastors are to welcome engaged couples and, above all, to foster and nourish their faith:

for the Sacrament of Matrimony presupposes and demands faith.
