Whatever . . . from Fr. Robert

THE FAMILY FULLY ALIVE, April 12, 2020

Reflection:

After the crucifixion the Apostles are ‘sheltering in place’ - not for fear

that a virus may kill them, but because there were some Jews who might.

They did not want to experience the same fate that Jesus had. Then,

suddenly, Jesus was there with them! He showed them his wounds,

offered his peace, gave them the Holy Spirit and ability to forgive sins.

What mercy! The apostles rejoiced, their fears forgotten. This encounter

with the risen Lord changed their lives. They have been called out of fear

to mission.

Then we read about poor Thomas. Maybe he was the one sent out to

procure supplies, or information, but he missed out on all the excitement.

However, Jesus did not forget him. The following week it is Thomas’ turn

to see and believe. His response is a declaration, “My Lord and my God!”

Though the Apostles had committed themselves to following Jesus they,

like those of us attempting to do the same, experienced times of doubt,

lack of confidence, and a struggle to trust. Meeting the risen Christ

changed everything for them.

This most unusual Lent and Easter season we have been forced to slow

down. We have more time to reflect, to pray, and to possibly make

permanent changes to our lifestyles. It is time to meet the risen Christ.

Scripture Alive . . .

We continue to find ways to give thanks and praise! Suggestions for the week: Psalm 145:3, 1Chronicles 16:23, Daniel 2:20, 1Samuel 15:22, Psalm 100:2, 1Chronicles 16:27, Psalm 100:3. (There are two different numbering of the Psalms, depending on which bible translation you have. I am referencing the New American St. Joseph edition.)

I really don't know what to write about this week. So much of our time was focused on getting through Holy Week, now what do we do? Well Fr. Ryan is preparing his remote formation class and like the rest of the world we are waiting to see what is next. It would be great if we could do some projects around the parish that do not need groups of people to accomplish, but the Governors Order and her interviews are making it clear that we should not be doing these.

I am currently working on a project to provide multiple sanitizing stations in church. They would include hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, open top waste baskets, sanitizing spray and paper towels. I believe these will be part of the new normal. We already added four large church offering stations at the vestibule and gathering space. I believe we will continue to use these and not take a collection as in the past. It would be very helpful for those who are able to switch over to online giving (I just did myself).

Last Monday we had a Zoom Finance Council Meeting to discuss the Payroll Protection Plan, and the benefits and responsibilities of using these funds.

God is here in the midst of all this, we can't let this perceived uncertainty create fear in us! We need to remember that in normal time our sense of control is only an illusion. All we can control is how we choose to act/react to the challenges and blessings we are faced with, and we know that God always gives us the grace to meet any challenges.

GOSPEL: JOHN 20:19-31

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you re-tain are retained.”

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disci-ples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe be-cause you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” Now, Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

To our pastor Fr. Robert, all the clergy, and a multitude of

others who assisted in decorating,

serving, recording and communicating our Easter celebration . . .

We as a parish have found our-selves being stretched to learn and implement new methods of com-municating and sharing the gift our own church of St. John, and the faith of our Catholic Church these past several weeks. We know this has stretched many parishioners to also learn new methods of receiving these communications. We are grateful to be able to continue rejoicing this Easter Season together.

I have been blessed for many years with being able to paint the paschal candle. Each year I pray and ask for guidance on what image to paint on the candle. This year, in early February, I was given the words Good Shepherd. This year was extra special because I was able work with my daughter Madeline on painting the paschal candle. Madeline focused her talents on painting Jesus the Good Shepherd, and the top and bottom bands, while I focused working on the background and the other elements of the candle.

The Paschal Candle is one of the most sacred and enduring elements in Christianity. Made of beeswax to represent the purity of Christ, the candle’s wick signifies Christ’s humanity and the flame His Divine Nature. It is adorned with one or more Christian symbols, often the cross to represent His redemptive sacrifice; the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet - Alpha and Omega –to signify that He is the beginning and the end. The Paschal candle is a rich symbol of our faith. It reaches its pinnacle at Easter. Each year during the Easter Vigil service on Holy Saturday night, a fire is kindled in a metal bowl, called a brazier (bray’-zhur). From the brazier comes a “new” and blessed fire that lights the Paschal candle which is carried in procession into the dark church The “new” fire serves as an image of the Resurrection. The candle,

which represents Christ himself, is placed on a special Paschal candle stand near the altar. Five grains of incense are inserted into the candle to recall the aromatic spices that were used to prepare Christ’s body for the tomb, and the wounds in His hands, feet and side, which remained after His resurrection.

Jesus the Good Shepherd “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and

power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father.” John 10:11-18

The Second Sunday of Easter,

Divine Mercy Sunday

Many of us have some extra time on our hands...and per-haps young people at home who might benefit from something special to do during this Easter season to keep the Christ-centered focus going.

How about making your own Pocket Shrine? A pocket shrine is exactly what you might guess it would be - a very small devotional item which can be carried with you wherever you go! These are lovely little reminders to take a moment to stop and pray - wherever you may be.

There are two easy ways to create a pocket shrine at home from what you have on hand. One is to start with a small tin (such as an Altoid container). Here is an example:

Another option is to use fabric, made sturdy with a lining of card-board or plastic. Many pocket shrines are formed in the shape of a cross, to fold up, but I ran across an

antique example that is also a pocket for a rosary.

Whatever your design, all you need are some favorite holy cards or images, and bits and pieces of lace, fabric, rib-bon, beads, and packing tape to “laminate” your pictures. Use your sewing skills or pull out the glue gun. Add prayers written on cloth with a permanent marker, or em-broider your “go to” prayer or admonition. Whatever you do, this could be a wonderful keepsake of this very unique time in our lives and history.

Ten Spiritual Counsels in a Time of Covid-19

1. This trial is a spiritual opportunity. Many holy men and women found God more deeply in time of loss, pain, and struggle. Live this  me as a special opportunity for spiritual growth.

2. These days teach us that we are not in control, and that God is, a powerful and healing lesson for all of life (Mt 5:3).

3. This  me, with busyness reduced, offers a priceless opportunity to reflect on our lives, why we are here, what ma ers most, the people in our lives. Reflect in this way: it will pay rich dividends.

4. These weeks offer increased  me to be with each other, our spouses, children, parents, and all the important people in our lives. Spend more  me with them, and the rela onships that ma er most in your life will be blessed.

5. These anxious days are a  me for small, daily, warm, concrete gestures of caring for others: a helping hand, a phone call, a text, an email, an errand done for another, a listening ear. Look for such opportuni es and respond.

6. “Consola on must now be everyone’s  commitment” (Pope Francis). Be a presence that brings consola on to the worried, the ill, the lonely, the afraid.

7. Follow online the daily words of Pope Francis. He speaks with wisdom, warmth, and faith about this situa on. In this way, you will live these days with the universal Church.

8. In God’s  ming, this struggle coincides with Lent. You have more  me, and there is greater need now to live it well. Make this a special Lent. Choose how you will live it.

9. Pray, pray, pray. Spend 15 minutes each day in some form of medita on—you have the  me. It might be lec o divina, Morning and Evening Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, the Rosary, Igna an medita on or contempla on of Scripture . . . whatever way best helps you to pray. Pope Benedict writes: “Prayer is the school of hope.”  10. Turn to our Blessed Mother in a new and deeper way. In  me of struggle, the Church always turns to her because “Never was it known that anyone who fled to your protec on, implored your intercession, or sought your help, was le  unaided” (the Memorare).

Today we celebrate "Divine Mercy Sunday." We find

the Apostles locked behind closed doors, they were all

afraid that they too, like Jesus would be killed. Jesus ap-

peared to them (which in itself should be enough), but re-

member Jesus is a GIVER not a taker. He breathes on the

Apostles and they receive the Holy Spirit. Remember what

Jesus told us , "I came so that they might have life and have

it more abundantly." John 10:11 The Holy Spirit is life in

abundance!

As the Apostles received the Holy Spirit, the Sacrament of

Reconciliation was instituted. "Whose sins you forgive are

forgiven them and whose sins you retain are retained." John

20:23.

My friends, look how Jesus continues to take care of

us. We all need forgiveness, we sin every day. When

we meet Jesus in the confessional, it is Jesus who forgives

our trespasses and fills us with His love and mercy.

I would like to thank Fr. Robert and Fr. Ryan, for all of the

hours they have spent in the confessional, being there for us

as we seek Christ's Love Mercy and Forgiveness.

During this time of distancing and separation, mercy may

not come as easy as the days increase, but we are called to

be a people of "Mercy". We CAN be a people of mercy only

through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Turn to God, when you feel like the walls are closing in,

when you want to go to Mass, go to school, (have the kids

go to school), meet with friends or go to TJ MAX.

Jesus is waiting for us patiently, He understands how we

feel and wants to share more of the Holy Spirit with us.

All we have to do is Ask Him!

Peace & Joy,

Sandy

The Divine Mercy Excerpt from the Marian Fathers:

Through St. Faustina, the Merciful Savior has given the aching world new channels for the outpouring of His grace. These new channels include the Image of The Divine Mercy, the Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday), the Chaplet, the Novena to The Divine Mercy, and prayer at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, the Hour of Great Mercy. Although these means of receiving God’s mercy are new in form, they all proclaim the timeless message of God’s merciful love. As Jesus told St. Faustina: My Heart overflows with great mercy for souls, and especially for poor sinners.

I appreciate all the lovely letters of support and understand-

ing that we have received from our parishioners during this

difficult time.

Some of you may have noticed the new message that is ap-

pearing during mass time regarding on-line giving. Thank

you for signing up and participating in this. Your support is

truly appreciated. If you are having trouble and need some

additional help I am happy to set it up for you and get you

the Domestic Church . . . . CCW- Council of Catholic Women News...

Have you ever wondered what happened in the life of

Barabbas? Did he change after being freed of

imprisonment in exchange for Jesus? Was Barabbas’s

family present? Were they joyful about his release? Were

they willing to take him in and give him yet another

chance to turn his life around? Here it is one week after

Easter Sunday and we celebrate the feast of Divine

Mercy Sunday. Jesus has saved God’s people and now

He remains sacramentally to give us His grace, so we can

be free of sin.

It is my experience that families are fearful of loving too

much, forgiving too many times, and thus setting our

hearts up for disappointment. That fear then carries over

into our relationship with God. It is hard with our human

nature to love God more than anything else and to admit

that we are constantly guilty and then expect to receive

God’s mercy time and time again. But He is always there

with His love and mercy.

It reminds me of when one of our children would fall and

lightly bang their head. They were not hurt but would

start to cry because they thought they were hurt, or were

embarrassed. I would immediately go to them with love

and say, “It’s o.k., you’re alright.” They were not afraid

to get back up because I was there with my love and

encouragement. That’s what Jesus does for us. Every

time we fall and are embarrassed that we have hurt our

relationship with God, He is in the sacrament of

Reconciliation and wants to say to us with love and

mercy, it’s o.k., you’re alright. Let’s not needlessly fear

the hurt of pride and embarrassment, when Jesus wants to

encourage us with His love and mercy. It changes us

from being fearful to being unafraid to keep on

persevering in our walk with God.

One of the precepts of the Catholic Church is to confess

serious sins at least one time a year. We are not to

receive Holy Communion whenever we are in the state of

sin. We hurt Jesus with so many unworthy Holy

Communions. Celebrate Divine Mercy by having your

family receive absolution and then again as often as

necessary, in order to give the respect due and receive

Jesus in the Eucharist worthily. Only then can we

become more like Jesus and then help others, people like

Barabbas.

As we begin the Easter Season, please continue to pray the

Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary in your homes. What an

opportunity to start saying the Rosary as a family. Despite the

circumstances that presently surround us, we are an Easter

people and, more than ever, “ALLELUIA is our shout.”

Let’s place ourselves and our loved ones, our church

community, our state, our nation, and our global family

before our Mother Mary. She will be a mother to us and draw

us closer to her son. As always we include your personal

intentions.

Weekend Rosary

Easter Week Blessings to all. Christ has risen this Easter. Our

celebrations were quiet. Mass on line helped us to connect to

Easter. I can't wait for when it is safe for us all to celebrate

together again. It reminds me of Christmas when I was 5 years

old. You heard everyone say, ‘Christmas is just around the

corner,’ but I was too young to walk around the corner of my

block alone.

Please keep praying for our President, Vice President and

Governor who are making hard choices for the good of all.

For those in the medical field trying to treat and save lives.

Even their own. For first responders and our parish priests and

those who don't fully understand how critical this situation is.

Please God, help us put an end to Covid 19. Please Lord, give

us more trust and more patience.

I ask you to remember two of our members who have passed,

Jeanne Mitchell Heying, who died on March 18 at the age of

95, and Shirley Kruse who just turned 83 and passed during

the night in her sleep. Please remember them with your

prayers and notes, until we can say goodbye as customary at a

funeral mass.

I have been filling my time making masks and more masks. It

is just a little way to help out. I finished the first bunch after

two long weeks of sewing, and I’m getting ready to make the

next bunch starting tomorrow.

May 13 Boutique Swap is on hold. I believe it will be too

early to gather. In the meantime we all have lots of extra time

to go through our closets and set some things aside for the

boutique. This event and others will be rescheduled. I miss you

all. Don't forget to thank God for our faith and the freedom

to practice it. We will be back in church celebrating together

again. Be safe! We are still very blessed! Sandy Tryles
