Liturgy & Music Guide December 2nd through March 3rd
1st Sunday of Advent – 8th Sunday in
Ordinary Time Year of Luke’s Gospel
The suggestions for hymns and songs below are primarily from GIA, OCP, and WLP resources. Most songbooks provide indices with even more ideas. Choose a selection of music that brings forth treasures, both the old and the new. Our worship brings us together to send us forth! (The titles in ALL CAPS are the tunes to which the texts have been wedded.) Be sure to be using the revised Grail translations of the psalms.

Pope’s Evangelization Intention (December) In the Service of the Transmission of Faith That
people, who are involved in the service and transmission
of faith, may find, in their dialogue with culture, a
language suited to the conditions of the present time.
December 1st: World AIDS Day. Please
remember in the Universal Prayer to pray for all those who suffer from this disease.
A question came up recently as to the “use” or “tradition” of the Entrance and Communion Antiphons. These quotes (mainly from Sacred Scripture) are prayed aloud IF an opening song or communion song is not possible. They may be recited or chanted (perhaps in “call and response”-style), again, to unite the voices of all worshippers. The reason they are included in this guide is to assist in focusing the choices made for congregational song.
December 2, 2018 1st Advent
Today we begin a new liturgical year. Before attending to the music for Advent, perhaps we might ask ourselves how we can let our work in liturgy and music lead us to holiness; how we might renew our desire for justice and peace. Today’s Prayer after Communion implores: “…as we walk amid passing things, you teach us by the, to love the things of heaven and hold fast to what endures.”
Some Advent reminders: 1) There is no Gloria during Advent, except on solemnities
such as Immaculate Conception, December 8. 2) The Prayer of Blessing of the Advent wreath takes the
place of the concluding prayer of the Prayer of the Faithful (Universal Prayer) only on the First Sunday of Advent. On other Sundays the candles are lit before Mass or immediately before the Collect. The blessing prayer is taken from the Book of Blessings, nos. 1509-1540.
3) It is the Tradition in the Diocese of Crookston that the Song at Communion is done beginning with the communion of the presider through the reposition of the Blessed Sacrament; the customary posture for processionals is standing. A period of silence is to be observed after communion for the offering of individual prayers of thanksgiving.
Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:
To you, I lift up my soul, O my God. In you, I have trusted;
let me not be put to shame. Nor let my enemies exult over me;
and let none who hope in you be put to shame.

Did you know that this solemnity is usually an obligatory one for the USA? That’s because Mary of the Immaculate Conception is our nation’s patroness. Did you know that some confuse the feast with Jesus’ conception? Remember, Jesus’ birth is celebrated December 25, 9 months after the feast of the Annunciation on March 25. NB: When it falls on a Sunday, the Feast moves to Monday (without its obligation). Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:

Question of the Day: How has God blessed my life?
December 9 2nd Advent
Pope Francis, in his Apostolic Exhortation, “Gaudete et Exultate,” (March 19, 2018) states that discernment is more than intelligence or common sense. “The gift of discernment has become all the more necessary today, since contemporary life offers immense possibilities for action and distraction, and the world presents all of them as valid and good” (167-168) “Discernment also enables us to recognize the concrete means that the Lord provides in his mysterious and loving plan, to make us move beyond mere good intentions” (169). How does this apply to our liturgical music planning? As servants of the liturgy, our priority must be to proclaim the Gospel message in this year, in this particular culture through music with whatever music style will enable the People of God to draw closer into the mystery of this season as we again celebrate the Incarnation. Did you know? At the OCP website (ocp.org) you can add “The Orchard” after any of their song titles in your YouTube search so that you can listen to a rendering before playing or teaching a new selection.

December 12 Our Lady of Guadalupe
This feast has become the most popular liturgical celebration for Mexican Americans in the US as well as in Mexico. Early in the morning on this feast, the plaza of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, for one, will be bursting with mariachi music, Aztec dancers, and love songs to Nuestra Señora, who led the people to her son Jesus. We can celebrate in solidarity, and recognition of our Catholic-ness = universality. For other songs and hymns, see December 8th. Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:

Question of the Day: Can I, like Juan Diego, accept the challenge and speak from the heart, even if at first rejected?
December 16 3rd Advent
“Rejoice!” The opening Collect as well as the First Reading, Responsorial (not a psalm), and Second Reading, all speak in joyous tones! Pope Francis’ apostolic letter, “Gaudete et Exultate” emphasizes the importance of discernment. Are we in touch with our own need for peace and calm? Until we get in touch with our own enslavement, can we really understand the impact of the Incarnation? Do we need a savior? Do we rejoice or merely sing the words? What are we singing about? In this crazy busy time for musicians, take time to “get in touch” with “why we do what we do” and focus on what endures! During the final days of Advent (December 17-23), pray with the “O” Antiphons”:
December 17: O Sapientia (O Wisdom) December 18: O Adonai (O Lord) December 19: O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse) December 20: O Clavis David (O Key of David) December 21: O Oriens (O Dayspring) December 22: O Rex Gentium (O King of the Nations) December 23: O Emmanuel (O With Us is God)

Pack you gear, musicians! Make sure everything is in order at home for Christmas. Hopefully, the gifts are wrapped! Say farewell to your loved ones! Promise your spouse anything! Because, surely, church will be a priority today, tomorrow (Christmas Vigil), and Tuesday (Christmas Day). For today, depending on your situation, consider simple, straightforward selections in contrast to what will probably be the very festive and celebratory sounds of Christmas liturgies. Not everyone in your community is excited about Christmas. For some it is a difficult time, especially those experiencing loss or incarceration…remember your pastoral-ness…

December 24/25 The Nativity of the Lord
I humbly acknowledge the following from Elaine Rendler- McQueeney, and relay it on to you all! (from 2015) “Musicians: we have fulfilled our obligation to proclaim the Gospel through music! In Advent we answered the call to shout for joy, sing joyfully, and sing praise. [For Christmas, we break] out in song and [join] in singing a new song to the Lord about the saving power of God. Visitations, journeys, shepherds, kings, and angels on the move…[urge] us to keep moving too. It hasn’t been a problem for those in music ministry! Shortly, it will be time to go home and celebrate or collapse – or both – until tomorrow when it’s time for Vigil Masses again.” Here is a Christmas wish for us all: “Place on your lips the word of salvation, in our hearts a love that welcomes all, and, in the depths of our being, the light of faith and hope, which the darkness can never overcome.” (Benedictine Daily Prayer: A Short Breviary, Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2005, p.1378)
SONG SUGGESTIONS: Explore your parish’s heritage, hymnbooks, and current population
to tap into and sing carols that represent these varied cultures –
remember – we are a “universal” church even if the faces present in
our pews may look “homogenous”.
NOTEWORTHY: There are FOUR sets of readings. According to the Lectionary, par.95: “For the Vigil and the three Masses of Christmas both the prophetic readings and the others have been chosen from the Roman tradition.” So take care in your choosing. Strive to feed your people with the richness of Sacred Scripture by perhaps proclaiming a set not usually done. Remember that most beloved “manger” scenes are reflected in most of the texts of our carols…
VIGIL: Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:
Today you will know that the Lord will come, and he will save
us, and in the morning you will see his glory.
Responsorial Psalm 89:4-5, 16-17, 27, 29
For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.
Gospel Verse:
Tomorrow the wickedness of the earth will be destroyed:
the Savior of the world will reign over us.
Communion Processional: Communion Antiphon:
The glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all flesh will see
the salvation of our God.
NIGHT: Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:
The Lord said to me: You are my Son. It is I who have
begotten you this day.
OR Let us all rejoice in the Lord, for our Savior has been
born in the world. Today true peace has come down to us
from heaven.
Responsorial Psalm 96:1-2, 2-3, 11-12, 13
Today is born our Savior, Christ the Lord.
Gospel Verse:
I proclaim to you good news of great joy:
today a Savior is born for us, Christ the Lord.
Communion Processional: Communion Antiphon:
The Word became flesh, and we have seen his glory.
DAWN: Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:
Today a light will shine upon us, for the Lord is born for us, and
he will be called Wondrous God, Prince of peace, Father of
future ages: and his reign will be without end.
Responsorial Psalm 97: 1, 6, 11-12
A light will shine on us this day:
the Lord is born for us.
Gospel Verse:
Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to those
on whom his favor rests.
Communion Processional: Communion Antiphon:
Rejoice, O Daughter Sion: lift up praise, Daughter Jerusalem:
Behold, your King will come, the Holy One and Savior of the
world.
DAY: Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:
A child is born for us, and a son is given to us; his scepter of
power rests upon his shoulder, and his name will be called
Messenger of great counsel.
Responsorial Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4, 5-6
All the ends of the earth
have seen the saving power of God.
Gospel Verse:
A holy day has dawned upon us.
Come, you nations, and adore the Lord.
For today a great light has come upon the earth.
Communion Processional: Communion Antiphon:
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Question of the Day: How will I respond to the gift we have been given today, the gift of God’s love made incarnate? How can I make Jesus present for others?
December 30 The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary & Joseph
The Christmas Season continues…the feast of the Holy Family is only recent in the Christmas season. This year’s Gospel Reading of the finding of the child Jesus in the temple is also commemorated in the Fifth Joyful Mystery of the Rosary. Since the feast is part of the Christmas season, Christmas hymns are encouraged. The Blessing of Families may be adapted for today’s feast. It can be found in the Book of Blessings, 62-67. Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:
The shepherds went in haste, and found Mary and Joseph and
the Infant lying in a manger.

January 1, 2019 Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God
The Christmas Season continues…consider blending Christmas music with songs relating to Mary for today. The Christmas season will last until the Baptism of the Lord on January 13. Our communities are often weary of carols by January! Plan for a wide variety of carols for the season and don’t use them exclusively. Besides Christmas carols, Christmas repertoire can include Psalms of the season such as Psalms 96, 97, 98 as well as words of Scripture (Magnificat, Ave Maria, etc.) Thought for today: Mary was the only person to accompany Jesus from His birth to His death. Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:

heaven and earth for ever.

January 6 The Epiphany of the Lord The Christmas Season continues…ponder this: Do Nativity pageants really deepen the assembly’s understanding of the mystery of the Incarnation or are they entertainment for the adults? Are we diminishing the great feast of the Incarnation? Would it be possible to have young adults play the major figures of the story? Then the children might have a tradition to grow into – to play a role. Does casting young children to re-enact the Nativity story, a centerpiece of our religion, send a subtle message to older students that religion is for “little kids?” Are we surprised that they leave after Confirmation? After years of “we’ve always done it this way,” is it time for a review?

January 13 The Baptism of the Lord
The Christmas Season comes to an end today! Saint Luke has already told us how the angels and the shepherds, and Saint Matthew recalled the magi: how all have attested to the holiness of this child. Today we hear God call out from the heavens, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well please.” Let us each reflect today on our own baptism, when we were recognized as a child of God. May God be well pleased!
Gathering Song: Entrance Antiphon:

the Spirit descended upon him like a dove, and the voice of
the Father thundered: This is my beloved Son with whom I

Today we hear the Gospel story of the wedding feast at Cana. This Gospel doesn’t occur every year in the Lectionary and it celebrates the first miracle of Jesus – the changing of water into wine. May is there at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, and she is there at the end – at the foot of the cross. There are many choices for this week’s pastoral needs. Choose wisely. Focus on the Gospel.

Expectations have a habit of tripping us up. We think we have it all figured out. We know what to expect. But then something happens to surprise us and we have to decide whether to believe it or not. Is this for real? The folks in Nazareth had expectations of their native son. This “son of Joseph” couldn’t possibly be the Anointed One, could he? God has a habit of surprising us, of defying our expectations.

Today we will hear Luke’s account of the Beatitudes. Luke’s version is more challenging that Matthew’s, the one we usually hear. You see, Luke’s “blessed” are immediately followed by complementary “woes” that are, well, not at all complimentary. As we listen to today’s Gospel, let us ponder which ones most closely apply to our lives. How will our music reflect that challenge?

March 3 8th Ordinary Time
Lent is just around the corner, so today is a good day to think about our character as we approach this holy season. Am I prone to judge others, more likely to recognize others’ faults rather than my own? Jesus points out that when we overlook our own faults, not only are we ourselves left deficient, but our judgmental outlook distorts our view of others. How do we plan our liturgies to help our assemblies to reflect on this during Mass?
