Table of Contents

Dear Friends,Welcome to our spring 2013 catalog! As usual, our new titles cover a wide variety of topics and concerns, yet common to them all is a strong underlying emphasis on hope: hope in the resilience of the liturgical and theological traditions of the church; hope in the actions of and conversations between people “of good will” to overcome the ambiguities and tragedies we inflict on one another; hope in our dialogue and relations with other faith traditions and the cultures we live in; and—most essentially—hope in the bond we each have with the infinite mystery that ever beckons and moves our being.

I am often encouraged by the adage attributed to Clement of Alexandria: “If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes.” To “hope beyond our hopes” offers to take us beyond the sentimental, the grandiose, and possibly even the vengeful to the patient solidarity of finding and keeping hope alive for those who have begun to lose hope, whether in church or in society, and of sympathizing with and praying for those who right now are looking with despair into chasms invisible to others.

It is our ongoing aim to be a partner with you in publishing for a richly diverse church and serving its transcendent hopes and changing needs—and to do so rooted in the teachings of the councils as well as in the lived experience of our ancient Benedictine tradition.

May all your reading be hopeful.

Hope Sings, So Beautiful

Graced Encounters across the Color LineChristopher Pramuk

Foreword by M. Shawn CopelandAfterword by Edward Kaplan

Award-winning author Christopher Pramuk offers a mosaic of images and sketches for thinking and praying through difficult ques-tions about race. Pramuk approaches his subject from various angles, drawing on theological and musical sources as varied as Merton and Hillesum, Wonder and Holiday. This richly illustrated book is not primarily sociological or ethnographic in approach. Rather, its horizon is shaped by questions of theology, spirituality, and pastoral practice. Pramuk’s challenging work on this difficult topic will stimulate fruitful conversations and fresh thinking, whether in private study or prayer; in classrooms, churches, and reading groups; or among friends and family around the dinner table.

“Pramuk creatively interweaves music, scholarship, art, the natural world, theology, personal experience, spiritual writings, and much more to examine discipleship in a racist and fractured world. But above all he unveils the everyday mystery of divine love that beckons us to new life and a new way forward.” Timothy Matovina University of Notre Dame Author of Latino Catholicism “Hope Sings, So Beautiful dares to interrupt readers,

inviting them to reflect more deeply still on systemic racism’s dehumanization of us all. Pramuk writes with eloquence, integrity, and urgency.” Kimberly Vrudny University of St. Thomas

Christopher Pramuk is associate professor of theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of Sophia: The Hidden Christ of Thomas Merton (Liturgical Press, 2009) and the recipient of the Catholic Theological Society of America’s 2009 Catherine Mowry LaCugna Award, the International Thomas Merton Society’s 2011 Thomas Merton Award, and several Catholic Press Association awards for his articles and essays.

“Seldom does an author share his soul. Not just his life and experience, but the people and events that inspire him; the art, the music and the encounters that feed his imagination; the passion that drives him. That is what Chris Pramuk does in Hope Sings, So Beautiful. It is spiritual theology at its most satisfying. If you want uplift and are not afraid to be turned upside down and inside out, this is the book for you.” Drew Christiansen, SJ Former editor of America Visiting scholar, Boston College

“Pramuk does not present a simplistic diagnosis of race problems, but an ‘alternate horizon’—painful, partial, mysterious, but nonetheless resonant with music. To those who help us see, we owe the deepest reverence; this author is one.” Kathy Coffey Author of The Best of Being Catholic

The Word Made Love

The Dialogical Theology of Joseph Ratzinger / Benedict XVI

Christopher S. Collins, SJFrom scholarly monographs to papal homilies, Joseph Ratzinger has insisted consistently over decades that Christianity is not a set of ideas to believe or, even less, moral laws to follow. Rather, Christianity is about a person and our encounter with that person. For Ratzinger, dialogue is the basic structure of all reality, and the Christian vision articulates the radical transformation that happens when we enter into this divine dialogue. Collins argues that this dialogical, communicative structure is a distinctive aspect of Ratzinger’s thought and a unique contribution to the renewal of theology in our day.

“Eloquently and peaceably, with a rare combination of scholarly and spiritual discipline, Christopher Collins guides us into the very marrow of Joseph Ratzinger’s theology. Like an icon, this book draws us into the encounter to which Ratzinger bears witness. A stunning achievement.” Matthew Levering University of Dayton

“Fr. Christopher Collins, with theological acumen and pastoral sensitivity, provides a robustly Christ-centered reading of the writings of Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI. This is an admirable introduction to the universal scope of the pope’s theological vision.” Robert Imbelli Boston College

“I have been captured by the beauty of The Word Made Love. By illuminating the dialogical theology of Pope Benedict XVI, this masterful work brings the reader face to face with Jesus’ living presence and the truth hidden ‘for me’ in the scandal of particularity. Thank you, Fr. Collins!” Fr. John Horn, SJ President-Rector Kenrick-Glennon Seminary

“Fr. Christopher Collins has written a book which is both informative for the general reader and a useful bibliographical source for the student. There is a certain ‘freshness’ in the tone and a pleasing humility in the presentation. This book is certainly a significant addition to the commentaries on Joseph Ratzinger’s work.” Gill Goulding, CJ University of Toronto

“Among the vast array of commentary and interpretation concerned with the theology of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI, this book stands out in its illuminating presentation of central aspects of Benedict’s theological vision. [The Word Made Love] will serve as an excellent guide to both the letter and the spirit of Benedict’s theology.” Khaled Anatolios Boston College School of Theology and Ministry Author of Retrieving Nicaea

Secular Music and Sacred Theology

Edited by Tom BeaudoinWhen the basic conceptions of the world held by whole generations in the West are formed by popular culture, and in particular by the music that serves as its soundtrack, can theology remain unchanged? The authors of the essays in this important volume insist that the answer is no. These gifted theologians help readers make sense of what happens to religious experience in a world heavily influenced by popular media culture, a world in which songs, musicians, and celebrities influence our individual and collective imaginations about how we might live. Readers will consider the theological relationship between music and the creative process, investigate ways that music helps create communities of heightened moral conscious-ness, and explore the theological significance of songs. Contributors to this fascinating collection are: David Dault Maeve Heaney Daniel White Hodge Michael J. Iafrate Jeffrey F. Keuss Mary McDonough Gina Messina-Dysert Christian Scharen Myles Werntz

“Scholars finally have a book that seriously engages theology and popular music through a variety of methodologies and musical genres. This is a must read for scholars of religion and popular culture and has definite classroom appeal. Secular Music and Sacred Theology teaches us that everyday popular music is an entry point into discussions of the serious contempo-rary theological issues.” Michelle A. Treasure in the Field

Salvation in the Bible and in Our LivesRobert A. Krieg

What does it mean to say that God offers salvation to humanity? What is this salvation, and how can we become more conscious of it in our lives? These are the questions that Robert Krieg faces in Treasure in the Field. While his intent is certainly to impart information and ideas found in Scripture, church teaching, and theology, it is also to illumine our own experiences.

“Robert Krieg’s approach to soteriology is symphonic, like a conductor uncovering the hidden melodies of Scripture and Tradition, and drawing intuitively from contemporary voices and narratives in a way that quickens the life of intellect and faith. Drawing us gently back to the God who loves and treasures all people without exception, Treasure in the Field is a summons to life and hope for a world-weary people. It is a book I will treasure both in and beyond the classroom.” Christopher Pramuk Xavier University Author of Hope Sings, So Beautiful: Graced Encounters across the Color Line

Robert A. Krieg is professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. He is the editor and translator of Romano Guardini: Spiritual Writings, as well as the author of Romano Guardini: A Precursor of Vatican II; Karl Adam: Catholicism in German Culture; and Story-Shaped Christology.

Foundations of Spirituality

The Human and the HolyA Systematic Approach

Carla Mae Streeter, OPHow does the Holy come to meet the human? Or, said another way, how does God work with the physical, psychic, and spiritual persons that each of us are? Scholarly approaches to spirituality often overlook the need for a sound anthropology as the base for explaining conversion, the dynamic of grace, and the effects of conversion in virtue theory. In Foundations of Spirituality, longtime educator Carla Mae Streeter provides a more adequate account of what it means to be a person before God. By mining the insights of Bernard Lonergan on human consciousness and the virtue theory of Thomas Aquinas, she presents a clear and integrated incarnational spirituality.

“Foundations of Spirituality brings striking new insights about the relationship of the human with the divine.” Ruthanne Reed, OP Director of Associate Relationship Racine Dominicans, Racine, WI

Carla Mae Streeter, OP, is professor emerita at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis, Missouri, where she continues to teach in the areas of systematic theology and spirituality.

When the Gospel Grows

FeetRutilio Grande, SJ, and the

Church of El SalvadorAn Ecclesiology in Context

Thomas M. KellyThe Salvadoran priest Rutilio Grande, SJ, was killed in a hail of bullets on March 12, 1977, along with two passengers in the car he drove. The impact of this killing transformed his friend and archbishop, Oscar Romero, as well as the church in Latin America and throughout the world. How could powerful forces within the overwhelmingly Catholic country of El Salvador execute a Roman Catholic priest and two innocent people in broad daylight in front of witnesses? Why would this same government go to the extreme of murdering thousands of lay Catholic minis-ters, dozens of priests, and even the nation’s archbishop? Why would the government, and the oligarchy that supported it, believe it necessary to repress the church in such a brutal manner? Thomas Kelly finds answers to these questions by exploring the church’s identity and mission during the colonial period (1500–1820) and the transformative impact of Vatican II (1962–65) on the Latin American bishops. He considers Grande’s life, forma-tion, ministry, and death and his impact on Archbishop Romero. Finally, Kelly explains what Grande and the church of El Salvador can teach North American Catholics today.

“This book is a ‘must read’ for those who want to understand how the church entered into the lives of its people in El Salvador after Vatican II and Medellín through the ministry of Rutilio Grande, SJ. When you begin with Rutilio, his life, his ministry, and his death, then you can understand the period of suffering endured by the prophetic church of El Salvador.” Jon Sobrino Author of Jesus the Liberator and Witnesses to the Kingdom

“Catholic theology walks the dusty roads of history, the same roads where Jesus walked and his first followers first met him. At its most elemental, Catholic theology is biography. Just so, the life of Rutilio Grande, beautifully narrated and interpreted in these pages by Professor Thomas Kelly, is more than a life: it is a dogmatic theology that shows us where and how the Gospel grows feet.” Kevin F. Burke, SJ Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University

Thomas M. Kelly is associate professor of theology at Creighton University. He is the author of Theology at the Void: The Retrieval of Experience and coeditor of Marriage and the Catholic Tradition.

Sharing Peace Mennonites and Catholics

in ConversationEdited by Margaret R. Pfeil and Gerald W. Schlabach

Foreword by Msgr. John A. Radano

Sharing Peace brings together leading Mennonite and Catholic theologians and ecclesial leaders to reflect on the recent, first-ever international dialogue between the Mennonite World Conference and the Vatican. The search for a shared reading of history, theology of the church and its sacra-ments or ordinances, and understandings of Christ’s call to be peacemakers are its most prominent themes. Contributors include: • Scott Appleby • Alan Kreider • Helmut Harder• Drew Christiansen, SJ• John Roth• John Cavadini • C. Arnold Snyder • Mary Doak)• Elizabeth Groppe• Thomas Finger• Bishop Gabino Zavala • Duane Friesen • Gerald Schlabach • Mary Schertz• Abbot John Klassen, OSB This volume includes the full text of two important ecumenical documents—“Called Together to Be Peacemakers” and “Mennonite and Catholic Contribution to the World Council of Churches’ Decade to Overcome Violence”—that are the fruit of recent Catholic-Mennonite dialogue.

The Mennonite challenge to Catholicism is the sober, shrewd, and historically rooted Anabaptist witness against the state and warnings about Christian entanglements with the

state. This has been the Mennonite witness, the Anabaptist witness. And there is a deep irony in the recognition that the seasoned, experienced, and alternately world-embracing

and world-judging Roman Catholic Church has often failed to learn the right Christian lessons from that experience; at times, the church has remained (willfully?) naïve about, or

not fully repentant of, the consequences of compromising Gospel purity in the name of political stewardship. Mennonites and others remind Catholics of the more dubious consequences of their way of witnessing to the state through positive engagement.

Vicki Schieber, Trudy D. Conway, and

David Matzko McCarthy, editors

Foreword by Helen Prejean, CSJWhere Justice and Mercy Meet: Catholic Opposition to the Death Penalty explores the Catholic stance against capital punish-ment in new and important ways. The broad perspective of this book has been shaped in conversation with the Catholic Mobilizing Network to End the Use of the Death Penalty, as well as by the witness of family members of murder victims and the spiritual advisors of condemned inmates. Written for concerned Catholics and interested readers, the book contains contemporary stories and examples as well as engaging discussion questions.

His most recent book is Sharing God’s Good Company: A Theology of the Communion of Saints (Eerdmans, 2012).

“Abolition of the death penalty deserves the same support as abolition of slavery. Not only Catholics but the general public increasingly believes that innocent people are executed because the criminal justice system is patently unfair for a host of reasons and is not needed for public safety. Where Justice and Mercy Meet: Catholic Opposition to the Death Penalty is a treasure trove of information on the necessity and urgency to abolish an antiquated approach to capital crimes.” Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza Archbishop Emeritus of Galveston-Houston

“Where Justice and Mercy Meet combines solid moral reflections on the death penalty with captivating stories of people caught up in this system. Both deeply interesting and educational, this book should reach a wide diversity of readers.” Richard C. Dieter Executive Director Death Penalty Information Center Washington, DC

It is a reflection on the heritage of rupture, displacement, and resettlement as the key to identity and hope for those continuing to live in between the cultures, languages, and belief systems of Korea and the United States. This book gives voice to the first gen-eration of immigrants and their children. Since the majority of Korean immigrants are Protestants, the first- and second-generation Catholic community is a minority of minori-ties, an ethnic minority as well as a religious minority. Thus, as a minority group and as a minority of minorities, Korean American Catholics may have more to contribute to church and society since this country was founded, developed, and maintained by immigrants such as these. Readers will come away with a deeper appreciation of the Korean immigrant contribution and more readily see the Korean American Catholic community as an authentic expres-sion of church. 25C 978-0-8146-8215-9

Theology

“Memory and Honor breaks significant ground in inviting us to reflect with Koreans of all generations on their heritage, their lived experience in this country, how they have been received by society and the Church, and their struggles, dreams and contributions. Fr. Kim brings to this work a method for reflecting theologically on the journey of Korean American communities, for understanding their pastoral challenges, and for identifying ways to minister to them.” Most Rev. Randolph R. Calvo Bishop of Reno Chair, USCCB Subcommittee on Asian and Pacific Island Affairs

“Fr. Kim makes an important and timely contribution for deepening our own self-understanding as the people of Korean decent in the context of church and society. This provides a forum for the beginning of a meaningful dialogue on how we can share our ‘authentic expression of church’ with the rest of the society. This is a ‘must read’ in understanding our Korean American development as well as our Catholic heritage.” Rev. Alex K. Kim President, Korean American Priests Association “As the first book focusing on Korean American Catholic communities, this book significantly contributes to Korean American studies and to theological and social science studies of immigrants’ religious practices in the U.S.” Pyong Gap Min Distinguished Professor of Sociology Director of The Research Center for Korean Community Queens College and the Graduate Center The City University of New York

A modern classic of liturgical and pastoral theology, now revised and annotated

by one of today’s top liturgical scholars! When Adrien Nocent’s The Liturgical Year was published in 1975, it was the very first comprehensive commentary on the three-year lectionary in relation to the Sacramentary/Missal as these were revised following the Second Vatican Council. Expressed on nearly every page was Nocent’s conviction that the liturgy and the Word of God proclaimed within it have something important to say to real people of every culture and time. He constantly returns to the question: What does this passage have to say to us today?

Adrien Nocent, OSB, (1913–1996) was a Belgian monk and professor at the Pontifical Atheneum of Saint Anselm in Rome. He served as a consultor for the Consilium for the Implementation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council, working especially on the revision of Holy Week and of the Lectionary for Mass.

Paul Turner is pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Kansas City, Missouri. He is the author of many books on liturgy, including Let Us Pray: A Guide to the Rubrics of Sunday Mass; Glory in the Cross: Holy Week in the Third Edition of The Roman Missal; and When Other Christians Become Catholic, all from Liturgical Press. He is a former president of the North American Academy of Liturgy and is a member of Societas Liturgica and the Catholic Academy of Liturgy. He serves as a facilitator for the International Commission on English in the Liturgy.

Now this extraordinary work of applied, postconciliar liturgical scholar-ship has been revised and annotated by one of today’s top liturgical scholars. Paul Turner has provided many helpful explanatory notes on history, culture, language, and, of course, liturgy. The result is a resource that promises to enrich and inspire a new generation of presiders, preachers, liturgy planners, and students.

The Prayers of the

New MissalA Homiletic and

Catechetical CompanionAnscar J. Chupungco, OSB

After the publication of The Roman Missal, Third Edition, much attention was given to the catechesis of the clergy and the faithful on the Order of Mass, which contains the chief theological and spiritual elements of the eucharistic celebration. In The Prayers of the New Missal, Anscar J. Chupungco expands the reader’s focus to the other parts of the Mass—namely, the orations or the Collect, Prayer over the Offerings, Prayer after Communion, and Prayer over the People. He demonstrates that these element, too are a rich source of doctrine and spiritu-ality waiting to be shared with others through homily and catechesis. Preachers and catechists will especially appreciate Father Chupungco’s recommen-dations for approaching the difficult and sometimes vexing structure and vocabulary of the new Missal. He offers helpful exer-cises for analyzing the Latin texts, comparing the original and the English versions, and crafting provisional literal translations that will aid in easier comprehension. Finally, he concludes with an ample sampling of homi-letic and catechetical notes that will serve as a rich source of nourishment for preaching and catechesis.

Anscar J. Chupungco, OSB, who passed away earlier this year, was a member of the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in the Philippines. He was president of the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome and is currently director of Paul VI Institute of Liturgy in the Philippines. In 2011, the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions presented to him The Frederick R. McManus Award for his contribution to pastoral liturgy. He authored many books, including What, Then, Is Liturgy? Musings and Memoir (Liturgical Press, 2010).

There Were Also Many

Women There

Lay Women in the Liturgical Movement in the United States,

1926–59Katharine E. Harmon

Foreword by Nathan D. MitchellWhere are the women in liturgical history? In considering the influential liturgical movement in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century, Katharine E. Harmon reveals that the reality is analogous to Matthew’s account of the crucifixion of Jesus: “there were also many women there” (Matt 27:55). In this groundbreaking study, Harmon considers women’s involvement in the movement. Here, readers explore the contri-butions of Maisie Ward, Dorothy Day, Catherine de Hueck Doherty, Ade Bethune, Therese Mueller, and many others. Harmon shows how movements and institutions such as progressivism, Catholic women’s organi-zations, Catholic Action, the American Grail Movement, and daily Catholic family life played a prominent role in the liturgical renewal. The historical record is clear that women were there, they ministered to the Mystical Body, and their important work must be recognized.

“Harmon’s book is a magnificent and much-needed addition to our growing knowledge of women as subjects of liturgy’s past, not only as worshipers, but also as creative agents of liturgical renewal in their own right.  Building on sustained archival research, Harmon is able to bring to light much-needed information about the leading women in the liturgical movement in North America.  I highly recommend this book.” Teresa Berger Yale Institute of Sacred Music & Yale Divinity School

Katharine E. Harmon currently serves as a lecturer in liturgical studies at The Catholic University of America. She holds a doctorate in theology from the University of Notre Dame and is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy.

“Katharine Harmon has given us an impressively researched book that allows us to look deeply into the lives of a host of forward-thinking women whose vision for renewed social order drew its inspiration from the liturgy. These women make plain that what happened fifty years ago at Vatican II was no mere liturgical fad but decades in the making. What has liturgy to do with life? Everything—and Harmon’s work demonstrates the significant contribution that these courageous women made to understanding that.” Michael Woods, SJ Gregorian University Author of Cultivating Soil and Soul: Twentieth- Century Catholic Agrarians Embrace the Liturgical Movement

New Titles14 Liturgy

Toward a Trinitarian

Theology of Liturgical

ParticipationR. Gabriel Pivarnik, OP

Foreword by Kevin W. IrwinHalf a century after the Second Vatican Council called for the active participation of the laity in the liturgy, a comprehensive theology of what liturgical participation actually means remains elusive. While most sacramental studies have highlighted the role and action of Christ, the conciliar reform and the theology that emanated from it call for a deeper trinitarian understanding of the liturgy and sacraments.  In this fascinating new work, Gabriel Pivarnik identifies the major theological developments in the concept of active par-ticipation of the last century, most notably in Mediator Dei and the Vatican II docu-ments. He also considers the reception of those developments. Drawing especially on the work of Cipriano Vagaggini and Edward Kilmartin, Pivarnik offers a lucid demonstra-tion of how liturgical participation can be viewed in metaphysical, soteriological, and ecclesiological terms through the lens of a trinitarian narrative.

“In this work Fr. Pivarnik launches into the deeper trinitarian meaning of Vatican II’s assertion that ‘full, conscious, and active participation . . . is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy.’ The result is as penetrating in its insight as its scholarship is exhaustive and up-to-date. Singling out the writings of two major twentieth-century liturgical theologians, Cipriano Vagaggini and Edward Kilmartin, Pivarnik provides rich and comprehensive syntheses of both. A scholarly tour de force, this book is indispensable for any doctoral course on the subject and a valuable resource for teachers of liturgy at any level.” John D. Laurance, SJ Marquette University Author of The Sacrament of the Eucharist

Gabriel Pivarnik, OP, teaches theology at Providence College, where he also serves as director of the Center for Catholic and Dominican Studies.

Word and ImageThe Hermeneutics of The Saint John’s Bible

Michael Patella, OSBIn Word and Image, Michael Patella explores the principles, intentions, and aims of The Saint John’s Bible—the first handwritten and hand-illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine abbey since the invention of the printing press. Patella focuses not on how it was made but on how it can be read, viewed, and interpreted in a way that respects biblical inspiration and Christian tradition in our postmodern context. In addition, Benjamin C. Tilghman contributes a chapter on the tradition of medieval Bibles. This is a book that is sure to appeal to aca-demics, pastors, teachers, and educated laypersons. Patella considers this Bible in the context of the great Christian tradition of illu-minated Bibles across the ages and also the fascinating ways The Saint John’s Bible reflects third-millennium concerns. He seeks to rekindle interest in sacred art by allowing The Saint John’s Bible to teach its readers and viewers how to work with text and image. As an accomplished Scripture scholar, a highly regarded teacher, a monk of Saint John’s Abbey, and the chair of the Committee on Illumination and Text that provided the vision to the artists who created The Saint John’s Bible, Patella may be the only one who could write this book with such insight, expertise, and love.

Michael Patella, OSB, SSD, is professor of New Testament at the School of Theology•Seminary of Saint John’s University, Collegeville, where he also serves as seminary rector. His books include Angels and Demons: A Christian Primer of the Spiritual World (Liturgical Press, 2012), The Lord of the Cosmos: Mithras, Paul, and the Gospel of Mark (T&T Clark, 2006), and The Gospel according to Luke of the New Collegeville Bible Commentary Series (Liturgical Press, 2005). He has been a frequent contributor to The Bible Today and is a member of the Catholic Biblical Association. He served as chair of the Committee on Illumination and Text for The Saint John’s Bible.

The Sermon on the Mount

The Perfect Measure of the Christian Life

Frank J. MateraSaint Augustine once described the Sermon on the Mount as “the perfect measure of the Christian life.” Taking his cue from Augustine, Father Frank Matera provides an exposition of the sermon for contemporary readers who wish to use the sermon as the standard by which they live their lives every day. Matera shows how the Sermon on the Mount summons believers to single-minded devotion and wholehearted service to God. He unfolds the historical and theological background to the sermon. He explores the meaning of the individual Beatitudes, which articulate Jesus’ call for a more abundant righteousness, piety without hypocrisy, and the need to become “doers” of the Word. This lively and engaging commentary is an ideal resource for adult education and Bible study groups. It is also ideal for all who want to live their discipleship more fully.

“The centrality of the Sermon on the Mount for Christian faith is undeniable. With his classic clarity and succinct style, Frank Matera captures ‘the perfect measure’ of the Sermon that has inspired Christians throughout the ages to follow Jesus Christ. In this deceptively small book, Matera offers an impressive interpretation of Jesus’ teaching that is attentive to both ethical and spiritual dimensions of the text. This book can serve very well in classroom settings, Bible study groups, or simply for personal spiritual enrichment. I highly recommend it.” Ronald D. Witherup, SS Superior General of the Society of Saint Sulpice in Paris, France

A former president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America, he is presently the pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Simsbury, Connecticut. He has published commentaries on Romans, Second Corinthians, and Galatians and written books on New Testament theology, New Testament Christology, New Testament ethics, and Pauline theology. Matera’s previous works published by Liturgical Press include Galatians in the Sacra Pagina series, Strategies for Preaching Paul, and Preaching Romans: Proclaiming God’s Saving Grace.

“Fr. Frank Matera’s The Sermon on the Mount is the fruit of a life’s work of pastoral ministry and the highest level of biblical scholarship. It is simple and accessible, but scholars will recognize its author as a guide who has command of the exegetical issues and yet distills that expertise for a general audience. Readers of all backgrounds will profit immeasurably from this book.” William Mattison The Catholic University of America

Maverick Mark

The Untamed First GospelBonnie B. Thurston

Somewhere along the way, says Bonnie Thurston, the wild unlikelihood of the Christian message has been reined in and made to fit more conventional categories of thought. That it is good and moral to be Christian we understand. That it is feral and almost uncontrollably countercultural is something that has been largely forgotten or suppressed. This taming has been espe-cially effective in the case of the first gospel. In Maverick Mark, Thurston sets out to rediscover the radicalism of Mark’s original message. Thurston focuses on Mark’s concep-tion of discipleship, economic justice, and personal lifestyle. She demonstrates that this gospel raises fundamental questions about some common contemporary Christian assumptions. This is an accessible introduction to Mark, ideal for interested adult readers of all kinds, which incorpo-rates the most reliable and up-to-date Scripture scholarship.

Bonnie B. Thurston, after years as a university and seminary professor, lives quietly in her home state of West Virginia. She is the author of many books of Scripture and theology, including The Spiritual Landscape of Mark and Philippians in the Sacra Pagina series. Her poetry appears frequently in religious periodicals and among her published collections is Belonging to Borders: A Sojourn in the Celtic Tradition.

“Maverick Mark is intentionally—and pro-phetically—challenging to think about, but it is also quite delightful to read. As one who has also experienced appreciation for this dynamic, even subversive, Gospel, I am grateful for Thurston’s powerful communica-tion of these insights to a broad audience in a moving and memorable way.” Elizabeth Struthers Malbon Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) Author of Mark’s Jesus and Hearing Mark “In Maverick Mark, the reader encounters not only a tightly focused but a downright urgent guide through the shortest gospel text. This is a book that can be given a first reading in a few hours but one its readers will not quickly forget.” Jim Forest Author of All Is Grace: A Biography of Dorothy Day

Pleading, Cursing, PraisingConversing with God through the PsalmsIrene Nowell, OSB

Irene Nowell’s work would be both impres-sive and important if she were “only” a masterful Scripture scholar or a gifted spiritual guide or a compelling teacher. The fact that she is all three makes her an extraor-dinary resource for Christians today. In Pleading, Cursing, Praising, Nowell puts all of these gifts to use to offer a guide to praying with the psalms. Nowell maintains that the psalms teach us to tell our story, to cry out our pain, and to give praise to God. They also teach us to listen—to the voice of God, the voice of Christ, the voices of the people around us, and the voice of all creation. This book includes questions and exercises for personal reflection, brief prayers for praying along the way, and suggestions for composing one’s own psalm-prayers. It promises to enrich the spiritual life of everyone who reads it.

She served on the translation team of the revised Old Testament of the New American Bible and the Committee on Illuminations and Texts for The Saint John’s Bible. Nowell is a past president of the Catholic Biblical Association. She is the author of Numbers (of the New Collegeville Bible Commentary), Sing a New Song: The Psalms in the Sunday Lectionary, and Women in the Old Testament, all published by Liturgical Press.

“Nowell’s lifelong love of the psalms and her scholarly work in interpreting and translating them provides grounding for understanding the Psalter’s character, structure, history, theology, and function. Readers become more aware of the bonds that connect all—humans and all nature—in community. This book will be a fine companion for any who wish to learn the psalms.” Shawn Carruth, OSB Concordia College

“No one knows the psalms better than Irene Nowell. She knows them under the microscope as a scholar, but more importantly she knows them as a friend with whom she has been getting together every day for years. The Lady of the Angels

and Her CityA Marian PilgrimageWendy M. Wright

The Lady of the Angels and Her City recounts Wendy Wright’s visitations to her hometown’s many Marian churches and shrines. But it is much more than a personal pilgrimage narrative. It offers important glimpses into the history of Los Angeles Catholicism, American Catholic culture, and Mary’s place in Catholic theology and tradition. It peeks into the heroic labors of the religious orders that went on mission there and the waves of immigrants who have arrived on American shores. Readers who know the geography of Los Angeles Catholicism will surely enjoy Wright’s reflection on familiar places. But there is much here that will fascinate anyone interested in either the history of Christianity in America or devotion to Mary by those who love her today.

“Nobody brings together popular piety and serious theological reflection better than Wendy Wright. The heart and the intellect can go together. This book is proof!” Fr. Ronald Rolheiser Oblate School of Theology Author of Our One Great Act of Fidelity

“This book is a major contribution to the place of Mary in contemporary Catholic spirituality. Readers who love Mary, those who are fascinated by southern California, or those who seek to understand why the figure of the Virgin continues to compel will all find in this poignant and elegantly written text things to inform and delight.” Rev. Dorian Llywelyn, SJ Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles

“Wendy M. Wright writes like no one else in the field of spirituality today. Travel with her on this fascinating Marian pilgrimage, and you will discover worlds that extend far beyond Mary and Los Angeles—and ultimately, you will be brought home to yourself.” Fr. Edward L. Beck CBS News Faith and Religion Contributor and author of God Underneath

“Here is a pearl of contemplative wisdom formed from layers of insight, discern-ment, friendship, expansive maternal sensibility, and the author’s own ‘soul moments.’ It is a treasure of art, local history, and multicultural experience, perceptive theology, and awareness of how images of Mary could reinforce both women’s oppression and freedom.” Joann Wolski Conn Neumann University professor emerita Past President, Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality“These pages take us into the very heart of Mary and

The Girl Got up

A Cruciform MemoirRachel M. Srubas

“And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about . . .At this they were overcome

with amazement.” (Mark 5:42)

The Girl Got Up is a spiritual memoir or, as Rachel Srubas says, “retrospection with an eye toward the eternal.” Though it is, to be sure, a resurrection memoir, it is also heartbreakingly cruciform. Srubas refuses to recount her getting up before an honest account of being brought low, of the breaking of her spirit. Blending personal narrative with scriptural wisdom, she offers shining new insights into the nature of childhood, spiritual awakening, sexu-ality, sin, love, marriage, scapegoating, Christian compassion, the proclamation of Christ’s resurrection, and more. No pious abstractions or how-to cheeriness here. Srubas faces life with a striking blend of realism, intelligence, and steely faith. The Girl Got Up is a unique testament to the God who grants us freedom, lets us fall, and yet never fails to raise us up.

Rachel M. Srubas is the author of City of Prayer: Forty Days with Desert Christians (Liturgical Press, 2008) and Oblation: Meditations on St. Benedict’s Rule (Paraclete Press, 2006). She is a regular contributor to Give Us This Day and Weavings. She is an oblate of the Order of St. Benedict, a spiritual director, and a Presbyterian minister living in Tucson, Arizona.

Sermons for Lent and the

easter SeasonEdited by John Leinenweber

and Mark Scott, OCSO

Foreword by Wim VerbaalThis volume contains Saint Bernard’s sermons for the liturgical seasons of Lent and Easter. Included are sermons for the Purification, Septuagesima, the feast of Saint Benedict, and the feast of the Annunciation, all of which are interpreted by Bernard in light of the paschal mystery. In the sermons for Lent, especially, one gets to know a more hesitant and searching Bernard than appears in his other liturgical sermons. Now that I have said something about fasting and about justice it is fitting that I say a few words about prayer. The more efficacious it is, if done as it should be, the more skillfully does our adversary usually

hinder it. Prayer is gravely hindered by cowardice of spirit and excessive fear. This often happens when a person thinks about his own unworthiness so much that he does not turn his eyes toward divine kindness. But deep calls to deep, a deep of light

to a deep of darkness, a deep of mercy to a deep of misery. The human heart is deep and inscrutable, but if my iniquity

is great, Lord, much greater is your loving-kindness! h

Bernard of Clairvaux

Theologian of the CrossAnthony N. S. Lane

This book offers a complete study of the doctrine of the cross in the writings of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Until now, this theologically rich topic has not received the attention it calls for. Anthony Lane analyzes and expounds the doctrine of the cross based on the nearly seven hundred references to the cross in Bernard’s writings. Among the important topics the author explores are:• Bernard’s letter against Abelard, a work

of central significance for this topic• the “usward” aspect of Christ’s work,

its subjective influence on us, and the “Godward” aspect, the way in which the cross puts us right with God

• objections to this teaching posed by Abelard and others

• ways in which Bernard applies his doctrine of the cross

• a concluding assessment of Bernard’s teaching on the topic

“In this well-researched study, Professor Anthony N. S. Lane rescues Saint Bernard of Clairvaux from affectionate obscurity and presents him as a major theologian of atonement. He also connects Bernard’s theology with his spirituality and shows why this medieval saint is so important for all who ponder the mystery of the cross. Outstanding in every way!” Timothy George Beeson Divinity School Samford University General editor, The Reformation Commentary on Scripture

“Anthony Lane is able to make even the most difficult theological topics under-standable. He is a master of Bernard’s writings. This masterful study does justice to the subtlety and poetry of Bernard’s thinking and to the great controversy between Bernard and Abelard over the doctrine of the Redemption.” Brian McGuire Roskilde University, Denmark

Smaragdus of Saint-Mihiel

The Crown of Monks

Translated by David Barry, OSBSmaragdus was a monk and abbot of consid-erable standing in the early ninth-century church. His Diadema Monachorum (The Crown of Monks), together with a later commentary on the Rule of Saint Benedict, established him as one of the most significant interpreters of Benedict’s Rule in his day and for succeeding generations. Smaragdus intended The Crown of Monks as a daily resource for monastic communities, to be read at the evening chapter. He sought to arouse well-estab-lished monks “to a keener and loftier yearning for the heavenly country” and “to strengthen and instill fear” in weaker monks. In this gathering of excerpts from various respected sources, a genre known as the florilegium, Smaragdus addresses a wide variety of topics perennially significant to monks. It offers rich material for lectio and meditation, forming monastic minds and hearts for facing whatever challenges come their way, linking them with the formative years of the monastic tradition, and pointing them to the final goal: the kingdom of heaven.

Saint Bernard’s

Three-Course Banquet

Humility, Charity, and Contemplation in the De Gradibus

Bernard Bonowitz, OCSOSaint Bernard’s famous work, The Steps of Humility and Pride (in Latin, De gradibus humilitatis et superbiae), is a short book consisting of a mere fifty-seven paragraphs. In it, the Abbot of Clairvaux unpacks the doctrine of the very crucial chapter 7 of Saint Benedict’s sixth-century Rule for Monks, which explores the dynamic “steps” or “degrees” of both humility and pride. This chapter by Benedict could well be considered the spiritual basis of all Benedictine existence. In Saint Bernard’s Three-Course Banquet, Dom Bernard Bonowitz makes the teaching of both Bernard and Benedict accessible to modern readers. With Dom Bernard as a guide, many more readers can be sure of drinking at the purest sources of the monastic tradition, which at that depth becomes one with the Gospel itself.

“Long ago St. Francis espoused Lady Poverty and in our own time Bernard Bonowitz, OCSO, has taken to himself Lady Truth. The happy fruit of this union is a commentary that conveys St. Bernard’s meaning in a way that brings us in touch with the original depth, incisiveness, and humor of this great work. We are deeply indebted to Bernard Bonowitz for making this possible by his own honesty, humor, and depth.” Mother Maureen McCabe, OCSO Author of I Am the Way: Stages of Prayer in Saint Bernard

“Dom Bernard offers an analysis so clear and compelling that this book will become a spiritual ‘source book’ for all who read it. There is a depth of personal experience and conviction in the book that is captivating. With sweeping references to literature, philosophy, and theology, Dom Bernard demonstrates a breadth and depth of appreciation for the spirituality of Bernard of Clairvaux that balances scholarship with spiritual direction.” Fr. James McCloskey, CSSp Duquesne University

“This book has much to recommend it, especially as a reliable interpretation of the Saint’s teaching. In a particular way, it will help us to discover how the doctrine of the Abbot of Clairvaux is present and active in our own monastic life as we live it in the here and now. The examples taken from the author’s personal experience give a special zest to the solid teaching the book contains, all of which contributes to the depth and relevance of its message and the attractiveness of its general style.” Abbot Bernardo Olivera, OCSO Author of The Sun at Midnight: Monastic Experience of the Christian Mystery

Light in the Shoe Shop

A Cobbler’s ContemplationsAgnes Day, OCSO

Light in the Shoe Shop offers readers a unique and intimate glance into the day-to-day experience of living the cloistered life in feminine mode. In her “cobbler’s contempla-tions”—no metaphor here: the author did indeed make and mend her sisters’ shoes for many years—Mother Agnes reveals the very simple secret of monastic life, a secret she shows to be an inseparable combination of mindfulness and fidelity. It is continual mind-fulness of God’s transformative presence and action and, in response, equally continual fidelity to each of the minutely detailed ways in which that loving divine presence woos the contemplative’s heart. Even those who strive for a more contemplative life outside of literal cloisters will find her reflections to be a great gift and inspiration.

Agnes Day entered Mount Saint Mary’s Abbey in Wrentham, Massachusetts, in 1956. She was prioress there for nine years, as well as vocations director, secretary to the abbess, and community cobbler. In 1986 she was elected abbess, serving the community in that capacity for twenty-two years. Since 2008, she has been happily living her Cistercian vocation once again as a simple sister.

The Rule of St Basil

in Latin and english

A Revised Critical EditionTranslated by Anna M. Silvas

Basil of Caesarea (AD 329–78), called “the Great” by later generations, was one of the fourth century’s greatest theologians and pastors. His influence on the foundation of monastic life was enormous. As he toured the early ascetic commu-nities, members would ask Basil about various aspects of living the Gospel life. Their questions and Basil’s replies were taken down by tachygraphers and eventually became the Small Asketikon, first published in 366. The Regula Basilii is a Latin transla-tion of this work, done by Rufinus of Aquileia in 397. It is one of the major sources of the Rule of Saint Benedict, and Benedict recom-mends it to zealous monks, calling it “the rule of our holy father Basil.” This volume represents a new Latin edition, translated and annotated in English by Anna M. Silvas. It also includes three extra questions and answers that survive only in the Syriac translation. Silvas balances masterfully between the rigors of academic research and the interests of an intelligent, nonspecialist readership. This volume promises to become an indispensable resource in understanding both the history and the spirituality of monastic life.

Anna M. Silvas is a research fellow in the School of Humanities at the University of New England, Australia. Her research concentrates on late antiquity, particularly on the development of Christian monasticism and the spirituality of ascetic women in early and medieval Christianity. Her published works include translation of ancient literature as well as monographs. Forthcoming is the first critical edition of the Syriac Questions of the Brothers. Her publications include Macrina the Younger: Philosopher of God (2008), In Quest of Basil’s Retreat: An Expedition to Ancient Pontus (2007), Gregory of Nyssa: The Letters (2007), The Asketikon of Basil the Great (2005), and Jutta and Hildegard: The Biographical Sources (1998).

Jerome Murphy-O’Connor is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the writings of St. Paul of Tarsus. He has been a professor of New Testament at the École Biblique of Jerusalem since 1967. He is the author of numerous works, including St. Paul’s Ephesus, St. Paul’s Corinth, and Paul the Letter-Writer, all published by Liturgical Press.

Keys to GalatiansCollected Essays

Jerome Murphy-O’Connor, OP

Over the course of five decades of scholarly work on the New Testament, Jerome Murphy-O’Connor has never been afraid to explore and question ideas that other scholars have simply presumed. In Keys to Galatians, he offers fresh perspectives on a rather neglected New Testament letter. This book includes new thinking on the origins of the letter and new insights into its purpose. The author explains why he dates the letter much earlier than most scholars and why Paul’s rhetorical technique should be considered nothing short of remarkable. He also explores illuminating hints about Paul’s personality. Murphy-O’Connor recognizes in Paul a notable openness to new ideas and what he calls “a daring strategy that would have been unthinkable for one less confident in his rhetorical skills.”

“This collection of essays is classic Murphy-O’Connor—crystal clear and thought-provoking.” Raymond F. Collins Brown University

“Some have said that this book will become a classic. Indeed, it should be so considered. But much will depend on whether or not scholars will dismiss it as lacking uniqueness and innovation, and whether or not non-professionals will invest the energy in reading a scholarly treatment of Jesus. May both groups stretch themselves and give it the attention it so richly deserves!” Michael J. Bowling The Englewood Review of Books

Eric Stewart uses New Testament depictions of Peter, a key but enigmatic figure from the first Christian century, to encourage readers to think about how communities contest memories and forge identities.” Zeba A. Crook Carleton University Author of Parallel Gospels: A Synopsis of Early Christian Writing

Eric C. Stewart is assistant professor of religion at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He is the author of Gathered around Jesus: An Alternative Spatial Practice in the Gospel of Mark.

“Eric Stewart gives us Peter as he would have been understood in his own culture. In doing so he makes sense of the various, sometimes conflicting, ways Peter is presented in the New Testament. And for those interested in seeing how the social sciences can enhance biblical interpretation, this book is the ideal primer on the subject.” Richard E. Chasing MysteryA Catholic Biblical Theology

Carey WalshWalsh offers a work in biblical theology that explores the liveliness of the God of the Bible. She insists that the pages of the Bible do not simply describe divine presence; they evoke it in the process of reading. Not all the time, certainly not predictably, but enough to warrant a trust. Her goal is to strengthen the heart’s reading competency in order to facilitate our encounter with God.

Carey Walsh is associate professor of Old Testament at Villanova University. She is the author of Exquisite Desire: Religion, the Erotic, and the Song of Songs and The Fruit of the Vine: Viticulture in Ancient Israel.

“Carey Walsh takes us into the thicket of Scripture, thorns and all, in order to ‘chase’ the divine mystery. Walsh helps us see where the holy may be lurking unnoticed, waiting to be discovered.” Peter S. Hawkins Yale Divinity School Author of Undiscovered Country: Imagining the World to Come

“Chasing Mystery is a wide-ranging exploration of religious faith in today’s world. Walsh seeks at every turn to connect her study with a careful analysis of key biblical texts.” James Kugel Institute for the History of the Jewish Bible Bar Ilan University, Israel Author of How to Read the Bible

25C 978-0-8146-3530-8 e eBook, $21.99

“Fr. Laurance writes from the summit of his scholarship, gathering a lifetime’s reflection and research in this masterful exploration of the Eucharist. It provides an up-to-date review of sources for the scholar but is straightforward enough to be accessible to anyone wishing to deepen their experience of the Eucharist.” David Fagerberg University of Notre Dame

“The research is first-rate; the text is accessible and informative; and the gift and challenge of the Eucharist for the Christian community emerge unambiguously. This is a text that RCIA groups in parishes, no less than diocesan presbyterates, could explore to their great enrichment.” Richard Lennan Boston College

Liturgy in MigrationFrom the Upper Room to Cyberspace

Edited by Teresa Berger“This volume serves to chasten sweeping summaries of historical experience that ignore these movements, to highlight the limits and value of our fragmentary knowledge, and to inspire a renewed sense of wonder of what it means to belong to the body of Christ.” John D. Witvliet Calvin Institute of Christian Worship Grand Rapids, Michigan

“Liturgy in Migration offers solid scholarship that is not satisfied with fine analytical surveys but also asks critical questions and sees future challenges. One finds chapters on diverse Western Christian traditions and Eastern ones, and the overall picture ranges from Pentecostalism to Oriental Orthodoxy. This is particularly praiseworthy, because there exist hardly any scholarly studies that compare specific Eastern and Western liturgical traditions with each other. Here is one! It is a most valuable study, most warmly recommended to scholars, policy makers, and anyone interested in the most relevant subject of migrations!” Basilius Groen University of Graz, Austria

“[This book’s] contribution to theology lies in the way it knocks on the door of theological aesthetics, showing the enrichment that could ensue if it opened to include women, their imaginative work of critique and constructive work of interpretation. More broadly, it takes its place in the growing body of work that contributes to the struggle for human dignity and spiritual self-determination for women that is a hallmark of our time. Read it with anticipation of bracing critique and constructive ideas, especially regarding the linkage of beauty with justice.” From the Foreword by Elizabeth A. Let Us PrayA Guide to the Rubrics of Sunday MassUpdated to Conform with the Revised

English Translation of The Roman MissalPaul Turner

Since its initial publication in 2006, Paul Turner’s Let Us Pray has become a valuable resource for understanding, planning, and celebrating the Eucharist. This new edition, thoroughly updated by the author to be in full continuity with the revised English translation of The Roman Missal, will be one that priests, liturgical ministers, planners, and students will want to keep close at hand. Turner offers helpful explanations for the prin-cipal rubrics for a typical Sunday Mass. He reflects on the place of ritual within the context of Catholic piety and then explores the regulations governing the furnishings, vestments, and ministers. He care-fully walks readers through the entire Mass, from the entrance procession to the dismissal. The book is cross-referenced to answer most questions about the Sunday ritual.

Paul Turner is pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Kansas City, Missouri. A priest of the Diocese of Kansas City–St. Joseph, he holds a doctorate in sacred theology from the Athenaeum of Saint Anselm in Rome. He is the author of Glory in the Cross: Holy Week in the Third Edition of the Roman Missal, When Other Christians Become Catholic, and many other titles. He is a former president of the North American Academy of Liturgy and a team member for the North American Forum on the Catechumenate. He is a member of Societas Liturgica and the Catholic Academy of Liturgy. He serves as a facilitator for the International Commission on English in the Liturgy.

History and HeresyHow Historical Forces

Can Create Doctrinal ConflictsJoseph F. Kelly

In History and Heresy, Joseph F. Kelly considers heresies and the historical forces that shaped them. In his customarily engaging style, he demonstrates that historical forces and human beings of particular historical eras play a major role in how both ortho-doxy and heresy come into being and how they are understood. Far from reducing orthodoxy and heresy to historical forces, he shows rather that a grasp of the historical context of both is essential in understanding them and especially in determining what might be orthodox or heretical.

“An engaging storyteller, Kelly teaches well what happens when context gets lost and people start using church history as a proof text instead of a dynamic interplay of events, places, and circum-stances. Kelly invites the reader to encounter ques-tions just as these historical players did: without knowing precisely the best way to explain mysteries or how things would turn out.” Christopher M. Bellitto Author of The Living Church

Joseph F. Kelly, PhD, is professor of religious studies at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. His books include The Feast of Christmas, The Origins of Christmas, The Ecumenical Councils of the Catholic Church, and others, all published by Liturgical Press.

Cave, Refectory, RoadMonastic Rhythms for Contemporary Living

Ian AdamsCave, Refectory, Road explores how traditional monastic life is helping to shape a new flowering of Christian community today. It traces the roots of “new monasticism” and draws on the classic elements of monastic life to suggest how this ancient wisdom, learning, and spiritual practice might be reinterpreted for new settings.

“At the heart of this enlightening work is Adams’ contention that the monastic way offers ‘ways to reshape the world for good.’ With precision and passion, he explores the value of practices of hospitality, commitment, creativity, freedom, devotion, humility, simplicity, rootedness, and crossing boundaries.” SpiritualityandPractice.com

“Ian Adams captures the essential genius of the monastic tradition. His book gives simple, practical inspiration for ‘ordinary living.’” Abbot Stuart Burns, OSB Mucknell Abbey

Monks and MuslimsMonastic and Shi’a Spirituality

in DialogueEdited by Mohammad Ali Shomali and

William Skudlarek, OSBIf Christians and Muslims are to live in peace, encouraging one another to grow in holiness and working together for the good of all God’s creation, they must move beyond politicized and often negative images of one another. Monastic/Muslim dialogue—issuing from friendship and focused on revelation, prayer, and witness—is an important component in this effort. Indeed, it is essential.

“Share this book with a friend. Witness how serious Muslims and monks share face-to-face, each from their own tradition. We treasure each other’s Way to God.” Sister Mary Margaret Funk Our Lady of Grace Monastery Beech Grove, Indiana

Mohammad Ali Shomali is the author of several books, including Ethical Relativism: An Analysis of the Foundations of Morality, Discovering Shi‘a Islam, and Shi‘a Islam: Origins, Faith and Practices. He is also coeditor of Catholics and Shi‘a in Dialogue: Studies in Theology and Spirituality, Catholic-Shi‘a Engagement: Reason and Faith in Theory and Practice, and  A Catholic-Shi‘a Dialogue: Ethics in Today’s Society.

William Skudlarek is a monk of Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota, and Secretary General of Monastic Interreligious Dialogue. Christian de Chergé A Theology of HopeChristian Salenson

Translated by Nada ConicChristian de Chergé, prior of the Cistercian commu-nity at Tibhirine, Algeria, was assassinated with six of his fellow monks in 1996. De Chergé saw his monastic vocation as a call to be a person of prayer among persons who pray, that is, among the Muslim friends and neighbors with whom he and his brothers shared daily life. De Chergé’s writings bear witness to an original thinker who insists on the value of interreligious dialogue for a more intelligent grasp of one’s own faith.

Christian Salenson is a priest of the diocese of Nîmes, France. Former rector of the seminary of Avignon, he is today director of L’institut de science et de théologie des religions at Marseille. He has published Prier 15 jours avec Christian de Chergé (Paris: Éditions Nouvelle Cité, 2006).

The Life of the VowsInitiation into the Monastic Tradition 6

Thomas MertonEdited by Patrick F. O’Connell

In these talks, published here for the first time, Merton approaches the Benedictine vows of obedi-ence, stability, and conversion of manners not in isolation but set firmly in the context of anthro-pology, morality, soteriology, and ecclesiology.

Thomas Merton (1915–1968), Catholic convert, Cistercian monk and hermit, poet, contemplative, social critic, and pioneer in interreligious dialogue, was a seminal figure of twentieth-century American Christianity. Patrick F. O’Connell is professor of English and theology at Gannon University, Erie, Pennsylvania. A former president of the International Thomas Merton Society, he edits The Merton Seasonal and is coauthor of The Thomas Merton Encyclopedia. He has edited five previous volumes of Thomas Merton’s monastic conferences for the Monastic Wisdom Series, most recently Monastic Observances (2010).

The Sun at MidnightMonastic Experience of the Christian

MysteryBernardo Olivera, OCSO

Bernardo Olivera offers a splendid, easily accessible summary of mystical theology in the Cistercian school. A master of both the theology and the practice of the spiritual life, analyzes this tradition first in its rich human, biblical, and doctrinal connotations and then according to its most typical expressions as they are lived among Cistercian mystics, with reference also to other Christian men and women. Olivera explores the rich testimony of the monks of the twelfth century as well as the lesser-known nuns and holy women of the thirteenth century.

“This is a firmly Christ-centered book: as the author shows throughout, it is because there was once darkness at noon that we can now speak of the sun at midnight.”

Abbot Elias DietzAbbey of Gethsemani, Trappist, Kentucky

James France“Separate but Equal is at once eminently erudite and commendably readable. James France’s authoritative volume will be of immense value not only for students of the Cistercian Order but for anyone interested in medieval religious culture.”

Mette Birkedal BruunUniversity of Copenhagen

“With this book, we finally have a comprehensive history of the medieval Cistercian lay brothers. James France skillfully employs a wide range of sources to illuminate the lay brothers’ social origins, their economic functions, and their religious ideals, and he carefully assesses both the lay brothers’ contributions to the Order and their eventual decline.”

Worship in the Early Church

An Anthology of Historical SourcesLawrence J. Johnson

“They will serve as valuable tools

This four-volume collection of excerpts from early Christian writings illustrates the church’s liturgical practice in both East and West, from its Jewish beginnings through the end of the sixth century. Source material includes doctrinal and historical treatises, scriptural commentaries, sermons, letters, synodal legislation, early church orders, monastic rules, baptismal and funeral epigrams. Introductions precede authors and major selections. A bibliography of pertinent literature, standard encyclopedias of religion, and manuals of patrology are also given.Rights: World, English, except Australia

“Worship in the Early Church will provide a useful overview of the commonalities and differences in worship traditions within the church, not only across time but also across space. . . . To discover these early writings on worship is to discover a spirit that has been lost in our modern age. For Christians to appropriate that spirit would connect us much more strongly to the early church and to the teachings of Christ than any given liturgical practice.” Theological Librarianship
