Dear Friends,Welcome to our spring 2013 catalog! As usual, our new titles cover a wide variety of topics and concerns, yet common to them all is a strong underlying emphasis on hope: hope in the resilience of the liturgical and theological traditions of the church; hope in the actions of and conversations between people “of good will” to overcome the ambiguities and tragedies we inflict on one another; hope in our dialogue and relations with other faith traditions and the cultures we live in; and—most essentially—hope in the bond we each have with the infinite mystery that ever beckons and moves our being.

I am often encouraged by the adage attributed to Clement of Alexandria: “If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes.” To “hope beyond our hopes” offers to take us beyond the sentimental, the grandiose, and possibly even the vengeful to the patient solidarity of finding and keeping hope alive for those who have begun to lose hope, whether in church or in society, and of sympathizing with and praying for those who right now are looking with despair into chasms invisible to others.

It is our ongoing aim to be a partner with you in publishing for a richly diverse church and serving its transcendent hopes and changing needs—and to do so rooted in the teachings of the councils as well as in the lived experience of our ancient Benedictine tradition.

Thomas M. KellyThe Salvadoran priest Rutilio Grande, SJ, was killed in a hail of bullets on March 12, 1977, along with two passengers in the car he drove. The impact of this killing transformed his friend and archbishop, Oscar Romero, as well as the church in Latin America and throughout the world. How could powerful forces within the overwhelmingly Catholic country of El Salvador execute a Roman Catholic priest and two innocent people in broad daylight in front of witnesses? Why would this same government go to the extreme of murdering thousands of lay Catholic minis-ters, dozens of priests, and even the nation’s archbishop? Why would the government, and the oligarchy that supported it, believe it necessary to repress the church in such a brutal manner? Thomas Kelly finds answers to these questions by exploring the church’s identity and mission during the colonial period (1500–1820) and the transformative impact of Vatican II (1962–65) on the Latin American bishops. Adrien Nocent, OSB, (1913–1996) was a Belgian monk and professor at the Pontifical Atheneum of Saint Anselm in Rome. He served as a consultor for the Consilium for the Implementation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council, working especially on the revision of Holy Week and of the Lectionary for Mass.

Paul Turner is pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Kansas City, Missouri. He is the author of many books on liturgy, including Let Us Pray: A Guide to the Rubrics of Sunday Mass; Glory in the Cross: Holy Week in the Third Edition of The Roman Missal; and When Other Christians Become Catholic, all from Liturgical Press. He is a former president of the North American Academy of Liturgy and is a member of Societas Liturgica and the Catholic Academy of Liturgy. He serves as a facilitator for the International Commission on English in the Liturgy.

His Diadema Monachorum (The Crown of Monks), together with a later commentary on the Rule of Saint Benedict, established him as one of the most significant interpreters of Benedict’s Rule in his day and for succeeding generations. Basil of Caesarea (AD 329–78), called “the Great” by later generations, was one of the fourth century’s greatest theologians and pastors. His influence on the foundation of monastic life was enormous. As he toured the early ascetic commu-nities, members would ask Basil about various aspects of living the Gospel life. Their questions and Basil’s replies were taken down by tachygraphers and eventually became the Small Asketikon, first published in 366. The Regula Basilii is a Latin transla-tion of this work, done by Rufinus of Aquileia in 397. It is one of the major sources of the Rule of Saint Benedict, and Benedict recom-mends it to zealous monks, calling it “the rule of our holy father Basil.” This volume represents a new Latin edition, translated and annotated in English by Anna M. Silvas. It also includes three extra questions and answers that survive only in the Syriac translation. Silvas balances masterfully between the rigors of academic research and the interests of an intelligent, nonspecialist readership. This volume promises to become an indispensable resource in understanding both the history and the spirituality of monastic life.

Anna M. Silvas is a research fellow in the School of Humanities at the University of New England, Australia.
